Thread: Re: Seeräuber is a reworking of Die Safeknacker.

I stand corrected -- and disappointed -- about the pronunciation of Safeknacker. I'm told "safe" is an import from English and so is still pronounced as if in English instead of phonetically as in routine German. Tsk.

I did get a chance about three weeks ago to play Seeräuber (or Buccaneer as they've titled it for the English edition) and found it enough like the original Safeknacker that a) I enjoyed it and b) the winning strategy from Safeknacker worked in Seeräuber, too.

But nobody liked it so much that it's been back on the table since. Safeknacker worked so nicely as a fifteen-minute filler. I'm not convinced that the game has been improved by making the scoring more complicated, though I admit it didn't seem severely hurt.

Which is kind of cool.

[Seifkna:ka], actually (though the last 'a' is actually a schwa).

Well, who are we mere mortals to say what is or isn't SdJ material?

Anyway, I do like Die Safeknacker! But it's a 15-minute game in a small box, fun because it's quick and a bit silly. I look forward to trying the new version and seeing whether it's been tarted up beyond what was good for it.

Oh, and another thing I like about it is that "Safeknacker" is pronounced something like "Soffakanocka" in German. Which is kind of cool.

Back later when I think of more emoticons to use.

I think Buccaneer is an amusing diversion as a warm-up but don't think it's SDJ material either.

I got to play Seeräuber last night. I had never played Die Safeknacker so I can't say if it's better or worse.

Seriously, a SdJ nomination? WTF?!?

Thread: Seeräuber is a reworking of Die Safeknacker.

Yes, it is apparently true that the Spiel des Jahres nominee Seeräuber is a reworking of Die Safeknacker with a few new twists thrown in. I haven't had a chance to play Seeräuber yet, so I can't comment on how successful the transition has been.
