Game News

Sneak Peek: Galaxy Trucker: The Big Expansion – Card #1
You would think that toting goods across the universe in a rickety homemade spaceship would be difficult enough without any additional complications, but the folks at Czech Games Edition sure don’t think so. Part of its forthcoming Galaxy Trucker: The Big Expansion, detailed recently on Boardgame News, is an expanded and revised version of Rough Road Ahead, extra challenges to today’s transgalactic trucker.

BGN link: http://www.boardgamenews.com/index.php/boardgamenews/

Card #2 should be released (posted) 6 September.
This is so much more than Rough Road Ahead. The Big Expansion will include Rough Road Ahead and many other things as well. This is going to be fantastic. Galaxy Trucker is still as fun as ever after having played it 16 times, and the expansion will make it even better! New cards and aliens and everything will be wonderful, I can't wait

It's not so much a reprint, right? I mean, this printing that's coming any day now (I hope) is the first time it's been printed by a U.S. publisher, right? The others were just a few of the CGE edition that someone imported that a few lucky people got, IIRC.

It seems intuitively obvious -- as an extension of the existing large meteor rules -- that you can only shoot them with rear facing lasers in the correct column.

Galaxy Trucker: Rough Road Ahead is supposed to make the game much harder, after all.

However, I suppose you're free to "house rule" whatever you want.

The main rules don't explicitly consider this case, as it doesn't arise without the Meteoric Inversion card. Shootable by cannon in the same column only, or can we allow adjacent columns? (Maybe due to the lower relative velocity - more time to adjust trajectory?)

Thread: Re: Light-fingered crew

Yes - I realised that the rule sheet explicitly said "decide" as I was writing that post. Thought I'd carry on anayway, as it still seemed a bit odd.

I hadn't considered your excellent point that a blue cargo container could be a zero-cost option if you get some more cargo on the last card. I just figured that there was no way cargo could cost less than a credit, so any "choice" was pointless.

I guess there's also the chance that you may lose cargo on the last card, in which case handing over cargo would have been the better option. So if you can remember from the prognostics that you've got some upcoming smugglers you can't beat, abandon the cargo.

(Devise your own explanation as to how the crew hide the stolen cargo from the smugglers. )

It seems pretty clear you pick what to lose, how else could the choice be made? Losing 1 credit isn't always the "cheaper choice", you would generally prefer to lose a blue cube (which costs you 1 credit if you don't pick up something else to fill that hold).

Thread: Light-fingered crew

Any chance of more specifics on this card?

"1 credit or unit of goods" is a bit vague. Can the player choose what goes? Or is it only goods if there are no credits? Or only credits if there are no goods?

Ah, the description does say "players decide in order", which tells us the player gets to choose. Okay. The first time I read it, I only really registered the "in order" bit rather than "decide".

But as this is the only card that costs credits in-flight, should you only consider credits earned so far on this trip (from pirates etc?) Don't imagine you'd carry your life savings on the ship. That would make it a more meaningful "choice", otherwise surely the player would almost always have the cheaper choice of credits.

Or by "unit of goods" do you mean "1 credit's worth of goods" rather than one container, as I initially assumed? "Unit" isn't a word which appears in the main rules.
schadenfreude: SHOD-n-froy-duh, noun: A malicious satisfaction obtained from the misfortunes of others.

So you've played Galaxy Trucker and you may have a handle on the game. Or perhaps you've preordered the game and are drooling of the thought of sending your spaceship through the galaxy.

Well... let it be known that help has arrived. A free expansion (cost only to print it out) that might be right up your alley.

Theme:

The continuing story...

Much like the base game, Galaxy Trucker: Rough Road Ahead is a game about delivering goods across the galaxy. This expansion continues the horrors that await you on your journey.

Strait from the rules:

Rulebook wrote:
This expansion is designed for experienced Truckers.

If you routinely build ships that overcome every obstacle and arrive nearly unscathed, if you shed a nostalgic tear recalling your first flights when your ships were smashed to pieces and you arrived with only a few sad fragments, then this expansion is for you. This expansion puts the kick back into space travel, and it kicks so hard that the tears will be in your eyes once again.

On the other hand, if you don’t think it’s funny when your ship breaks into two pieces, this expansion is not for you. If you have only played a few games of Galaxy Trucker and your ships often fall apart en route, we recommend you do not use this expansion yet. This expansion, like the universe, is unfair. Save it for later, when you begin to feel that the game is too simple.

But most importantly: Do not use this expansion when introducing new players to the game.

So there are a few obvious points to make:

1) Don't play this if you are playing your first game.
II) Just because its an expansion, doesn't mean it will be nice to you.
C) This expansion will make you cry if you are used to getting to the destination safely.

The rules (much like the base game rules) are once again a rather fun, easy read: you can find them here.

So basically the theme of this expansion is like the title says: schadenfreude... chaos. Its a rough ride out there, make sure you buckle up.

Components:

The components are what you make of them.

The file is a downloadable PDF file. Its up to you how you want to print them out.

There are a couple of options, one for black and white and another for color.

My set is only one sided (Dang you Staples!). The file comes that if you want to have a backing, just print double sided, and all the cards have a back. (This is not necessary though)

On the website is also a tuck box for the cards. This is handy to keep them in order and toss them into your base game's box.

The expansion is essentially 11 cards. I must say that the art is as good as the base games.

Mechanics:

The mechanics are easy to figure out.

Basically the group decides on a hardness level to play. The rules suggest level 2 or 3 for the game.

At the beginning of each round you shuffle the cards and then flip up the number you decide on.

Then, after the round, you discard the current cards and pick the next ones. This means that you'll go through 6 - 9 expansion cards through the game. (If you go up to level III; the rules suggest not to play IIIa with these cards... in a tongue-in-cheek way, mind you)

Gameplay:

The gameplay is easy to get a handle of.

Basically the expansion cards have new hurdles to jump during the round that they are face up for.

For instance, there is card called "Big Baddies" which throughout the round, all that enemies are at a +2 strength.

So the expansion in essence makes your trip a bit more... ummm... exciting.

You can easily go online and find all eleven cards and there effects. But I warn you... they are rather nasty (or fun if you are psychotic).

Overall:

Overall I like this expansion.

I rate it a little below the base game because it will make the journey a little more difficult and some people might find that unfortunate.

Once again... if don't take this game too seriously and enjoy a little misfortune in your life... then this game is for you.

The issue is that this makes what can be a difficult game... much much more difficult. But hey, I'm always up for a challenge.

Its free as well...

Final Rating: 7.5/10

-DK
