Thread: Uncertain Role Win variant for 2-3 players

In this variant, you can never be certain of winning a role. It also makes for a reasonable two player game.

The rules are as per the normal game except:

1) At the start of the game and each subsequent round, any unused decks of role cards are shuffled and placed face down near the middle. There will then be 3 spare decks in a 2 player game or 2 spare decks in the 3 player game.

2) During each round, after each set of cards is played by all the players, one of the non-winning players may turn over two cards from any of the face down decks.

If either of the turned up role cards should match the selected role card, then the player who would otherwise have won, loses their right to this role, just as if another player had played the role card after them. Worse still that player leads off in the next set, as if they had won.

All turned up role cards from the spare decks are then left face up and ignored until the end of the current round. They are then shuffled back into their respective decks and placed face down ready for the start of the next round.

A non winning player may look through the piles of previously faced up role cards before deciding which of the spare decks to draw from. The two drawn cards may also come from different spare decks.
Thread: First Time 5 Players

We decided to end the Tuesday Night meetup of the Northbay Gamers with a new game in the light category -- Witches' Brew.

The game was a little overwhelming at first, having to figure out which of the 5 cards to choose, but I think everyone was able to figure out the 3 general categories of cards -- gain resources, transmute resources, buy VPs.

Having no clue about strategies and what cards to choose, I started off with 3 produces and 2 buy vps. From then on I sort of alternated producing and buying vps, depending on how many resources I started the turn with.

With 5 players and 5 cards per set, the odds were that one or more people were going to whiff each time (not get to activiate a card). I somehow managed to almost never whiff, getting 1 or 2 of the actions eacy round (and 3 in one round!).

Being conservative, I went for So Be It when there were generally a risky number of cards yet to play - I assessed risk by summing all the cards in the hands of players yet to go, along with some guesses based on their board (i.e. if someone had a bunch of Bloods, they were unlikely to have chosen Wolfie, so I could discount their card total).

I didn't have to make nearly as many So Be It decisions as the other players due to the luck of position and my card choices.

Five players was definitely chaotic, and it made your initial choices very unpredictable, as your position in the turn order varied too much -- the game may have more strategy and less randomness with four.

I was the clear winner with 23 points (5 in beakers) -- the next closest were two players tied at 15.

Thread: A Bunch of Old Rules, in a Unique Way!

So I played this a couple of times for the first time and so here is my review:

First: If you don't know, I'm a jaded war gamer, deal with it!

Second: This is a good game.

What do I mean a bunch of old rules in a Unique Way?
Well it's nothing special for rules, they have all been done before, to death, how ever, how they work is unique.
First to gain VP you need to gather stuff, sets if you will, so it's a gathering game.
Second to do actions you have to choose roles, so it a role selection game.
Third to can trump other peoples actions with your own cards, so for those who have not figured it out yet, this is a TRICK taking game.
All old news? Sure, but it works so interestingly fresh, that its fun.

So how does it work:
Well each player has a set of role cards, like race for the galaxy or what not. Each one allows them to do some action, like gathering resources, or trading those in for victory point cards or money (which can gain even more resources or VP chips). Some can also steal goods from others, to gather you VP cards (mwhahahaha). Lastly there is an interesting wild card, which changes in ability each hand, as determined by a deck of cards that is shuffled and drawn a new one each hand (a interesting mechanic I actually have not seen and like a lot.) Each player, like in any other role selection, chooses there roles, 5 of the 12, forming a hand of roles they want to make.
After the formation of the hands, it is times to play. This is the bluffing/trick taking mechanic part. Who ever 'won' the last trick, whether this hand or last play of the last hand, starts. They play a role, declaring "I am the (name of role)" like "I am the wizard". This can start to sound very metal(heavy). Then going around the table, anyone who has that exact same role, must follow by playing that role. When they do, they have two options:

A) conceding the trick to the previous player to claim it, and take the secondary action immediately. In an example, if I were to play "I am the herb picker", and you followed with a herb picker, you could concede it to me, and just take one herb yourself. Once your have done so you place your card on top of your card pile (of used cards.)
B) you can say "NO, I AM the HERB PICKER!!!!" (Cackle evily) forcing me to 'discard' (place it on top of my used card pile). A you now are winning the trick. HOWEVER, if a player further down the line now has the HERB PICKER, they can do the same to you, and you get nothing just like me who you sniped! You were greedy and should of just taken the 1.

This usually means if you lead it, some one else might take that role from you. In a larger game people are more likely to submit because they still have a lot of people after them. remember here, that once some one plays a roll, ex the herb picker, everyone who choose that role as one of their's must play it! So only one person will get the full benefit. The last person in line, if he/she has that roll can of course, always claim it, as there is no one after her/him to snipe them. Of course, if they don't have that card, and the person before them submitted to the previous claimer, then the submitter will usually grit their teeth! So basically it's all about guessing correctly what the people down the line from you have so that you know whether or not to claim a roll when played. Of course, if you lead a role and no one else had that role, you get to do it!

Points are gained by using a role that allows you to either collect vials (1 for 1 point) by trading in gold or resources. Or using resources to gain cards, which go from 2-6. Once four of the higher value cards (out of 10) are drawn, the game is over.

Every hand you get to choose your cards all over again, you can choose the same, some of the same, or even a whole new hand! The game plays quick maybe 30-45 at best.

Wow, that's simple, yet confusing in some parts. The whole stealing of roles makes a lot more sense when you actually play it. It's really simple, either try to claim it hoping some one else doesn't or take the lighter version, thinking some one else will claim it down the line that play and you don't want to get nothing.

It's fun, there is a lot of bluffing and thinking, but it goes quick and it doesn't hurt your brain. You simply stare the next guy in the eye and think "does he have it or not", and make your move. Also saying "NO I AM THE (role)" is fun, as the horror on your opponents face spreads in reaction to your awesome theft (when it was the one he really wanted). Also you can lead to destroy, making people claim or at least play their card that they wanted to play after another one (to get what they needed first). This can be great amusement. So, it's just a good game.

Anyone know what this means?

Two possible explanations, choose your favorite:

Explanation 1: Because the game contains dubious material promoting occult rites, it is illegal to declare Witch's Brew as number 1 in your top 10 games list (that is, your preferred game). BND, NSA and KGB will compete in getting you if you counter-act.

Explanation 2: EU customs have a concept of "preferential origin status" for reduced customs rates, aka preferencial declaration. For the newer EU member states like the Czech Republic there are transitional periods where this preferencial declaration is not yet applicable to all goods from those countries. EU bureaucracy requires the above statement to be printed on the packaging. The same statement (in english!) is also printed on the "Wie verhext!" box.

Hey DK - I appreciate your point on role selection as the chances of you being the only person to select a specific role is not very high, however, many roles will be useless to you during a specific turn such as potion brewer without correct ingredients, or ingredient collector if you already have 3 of that type, etc.

As for choosing the primary or secondary ability, I also disagree. Sure, our games tended to see people be greedy. But how much more productive could someone have been by ALWAYS taking the secondary ability - it's a guarantee! Even if you're the last person, while it may seem obvious to take the primary, remember that by accepting the secondary - you'll still be LAST to make the decision for the next role.

I'm not trying to convice you to like a game that you don't, but to show that the game is not that cut-and-dry.

I played in both games with Jeff here, so I'll go ahead and throw in my two cents. I thought the game was very "meh". Not bad, per se', but not captivating either. Held my attention just enough to still enjoy socializing with my friends around the table, but not enough for me to derive any fun from the game itself.

Mostly I felt that the games mechanics made any choices I made irrelevant. I could blind pick 5 random roles and get about as much use out of them as if I hand picked the 5 roles.

Since you are forced to play a role card if it comes up, the only choice is whether to take the primary or secondary ability. A choice that is painfully obvious and determined by where you are in the seating arrangement. All in all you are more letting the game play itself rather than playing the game.

All in all I'd rather play Witch's Brew than NOT play a game with friends, but there are countless games I'd rather play with them.

I see what you mean - yeah, I guess you could say that you have a few more options open to you every turn. There are quite a few roles to choose from, and taking the secondary role is often not a bad idea, as turn order is an extremely important factor to keep in mind.

I wonder if the game has slipped under the radar due to the general sentiment of "meh" that I perceived coming from most of the users that played it at the Gathering of Friends.

Thread: No, I'm the Wizard! So be it!

Let it be known that I am a sucker for role-selection games – Citadels, Mission: Red Planet, Fist of Dragonstones, etc. So when I got a peek at Alea’s new medium box offering, I knew I would get a copy.

INTRO
Witch’s Brew is a card game that utilizes role-selecting with some VP development (you gotta win somehow, right?). It’s designed by Andreas Pelikan, plays 3-5 players of age 10+ and estimated to last 45 minutes.

THEME
Each player assumes various professions (role cards) to gather ingredients, concoct brews, acquire gold, steal opponent’s ingredients or gold, and even cast spells. In the end, the player who has accumulated the most valuables (VP’s) wins.
The theme is light and fun with nice caricature artwork. Sure, one could argue it’s pasted on, but it’s a card game, not a life simulation.

COMPONENTS
As a card game, the primary components are…well, cards! Each player gets a deck of the same 12 role cards. Player colors are red, yellow, blue, green and purple. The role cards clearly define their name, role, primary and secondary abilities.

There are another 6 small decks of cards – Copper cauldron (7 cards), Silver cauldron (7 cards), Iron cauldron (7 cards), Gold shelf (5 cards), Ingredient shelf (5 cards) and finally, Spells (8 cards).

The cauldron cards offer four important pieces of info – cauldron type, ingredients required, VP value, and crow presence. Each cauldron type always requires the same primary and/or secondary ingredients. For example, every silver cauldron requires an amount of herb juice. The higher VP silver cauldrons also requires some amount of venom.

The shelf cards also bear important info – shelf type, materials required, VP value, and crow presence.

The Spell cards allow you to acquire VP's or ingredients in different ways. They are very easily understood.

Also included are two different cardboard chits – small potions (45) and gold (24). They are on thick stock and will last.

The final playing bits are the 60 wooden teardrop shaped ingredients of three colors – 20 each of wolf’s blood (red), herb juice (green) and venom (white). I always like seeing a new shape for a wooden bit and this teardrop is new to me.

Finally, you get the instructions, which, if you’re like me (English speaking only) and you have/purchase/play the German copy, they get tucked under the insert. Thanks to Todd Redden (tmredden) for his English rules upload.

SET-UP
Each player chooses a color and gets the respective 12 role cards. They also get two gold and one of each ingredient.

The three cauldron and two shelf pre-arranged decks are placed face-up in the middle of the playing area. Each deck is sorted with lowest VP on top through highest VP on bottom.

The spell cards are shuffled and placed face-up, so that only one is visible (We simply keep the deck face-down and flip over the top card as necessary).

Finally, the gold and small potion chits are set aside in reach of all players.

GAME PLAY
To begin the game, each player secretly selects 5 of the 12 roles that they will assume this round. Which five, you ask? How about a further description of the roles? Mr. Pelikan did a great job in breaking the roles into categories and color-coding these roles. Remember, each role offers a primary and a secondary ability. The secondary ability is VERY similar to the primary, simply not quite as powerful – think Puerto Rico here!

Green Roles X 3 (Ingredient collection):

Blue Roles X 3 (Brew potions)

Red Roles X 2 (Steal from opponent and collect Shelf cards)
Silver Role X 1 (Cast the face-up Spell card)

Gold Roles X 3 (Acquire or spend gold)

After each player has selected their five roles, the playing may begin. The starting player selects one of his roles and announces, “I am the (insert role here)!” The player to her left determines whether or not that role is one of the 5 she selected. If not, she simply passes. If she did choose that role, then she has two choices – accept the secondary ability or denounce the original player and try for the primary ability.

Choice 1 – To accept the secondary ability she plays the required role card and says, “So be it” and executes the secondary ability.

Choice 2 – To denounce the original role-player she plays the required role card and says, “No, I am the (insert role here)!” The original player turns over his role card and gets nothing, nada, zero, zilch!

Whichever she chooses, the play continues clockwise until all players have responded with:
1) Pass – player didn’t select that role this round
2) So be it – and takes secondary ability
3) No, I’m the (insert role here)! – hoping to get primary ability

Once the last player (player to the right of the start player) has responded, the current role holder takes the primary ability. But getting the primary ability has a penalty, for that player must start the next round by selecting a role and playing it.

As you can see, going first can be a distinct disadvantage because it’s quite possible you will be denounced. So you’ve got to carefully decide to either accept the watered-down secondary ability or be greedy and go for the primary ability. Throughout the game players will be acquiring/exchanging gold, ingredients, small potions, cauldrons and shelves.

The round finishes when all players have played all five of their role cards. Each player then places their five used role cards back into their role deck to begin another round. The last player who successfully uses a primary ability will begin the second round.

Remember those crows that were mentioned on the cauldrons and shelves? They determine the end of the game. The game ends after the round in which four total cards (not a single player to acquire four) depicting a crow have been picked up by players.

CONCLUSION
And that’s it! The game plays very quickly with players yelling back and forth, “No, I am the Wolf keeper!” and “So be it.”

Certainly the first two rounds are the slowest for newbies as they are learning the roles and deciding whether to accept the secondary or try for the primary ability. But once they ‘get it’, the game moves.

I really like the decision-making of this game. It certainly isn’t brain-burning, but you do have to consider several options when deciding roles and which ability to accept. If lucky, you can dedicate a round to a specific function such as ingredient collecting or potion brewing and do really well, of course, you can also do really poorly.

We found the 45 minute play time to be accurate. If all players are experienced with the game than 30 minutes is possible. And even with a majority of the players first-timers, 45 minutes is accurate.

My only slight concern is the replayability. I can see this game wearing out its welcome if it were continually played – mind you it’ll take quite a few plays to actually become boring. That’s also my only knock on Citadels yet I keep coming back for more of that one.

So, how do I rank Witch’s Brew? I’m giving it an 8 simply because it’s easy-to-teach and has a short playing time. I like it much more than some others with these traits like Coloretto, Bohnanza, and Carcassonne.

Oh, and finally, a thanks to Roland Alkemper (trollkin) for all the photo uploads!

So be it!
Thread: Re: Where's the love?

That's because it's not a typical Alea game in that it's much lighter than what most BGG users expect of an Alea release. It's kind of an anomaly like Rum & Pirates (which, incidentally, was also misunderstood, or suffered from unfulfilled expectations).

If you're looking for a deeper Citadels I think you'll be disappointed. Only one person can choose a role in Citadels, and you probably have a much better idea of what someone is going to choose than in this game. Plus, in this game you choose five roles - you basically just cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Do the five of us that rate the game at least 8 not count as lovers of the game?

I played my first game of Alea #4 Wie verhext! with my gamers group last night and everyone had a blast! Not only is it a good game, but we had uproarious fun playing it. Symbols on the cards make remembering their function very easy after going through the deck once. I think the learning curve is probably the shortest of any foreign language game I've ever attempted to play or teach. It became second nature for all players to speak German for all role declarations, though we did adopt "so be it" and "pass" for the other options. Other players from around the room looked at us with puzzled expressions every time one of us uttered "ich bin der Gehilfe" (or such) which added to the fun. I was imagining needing to buy the English version Witch's Brew when it comes out, but having played Wie verhext! so easily now there is no need.

Errr.., maybe I was too blue-eyed. I was just silently asuming that Rio Grande is working on it, but indeed they have not announced anything. I'll find out and let you know (but be patient, Austria and Germany are closed down for easter).

The french edition however is well on it's way at Filosfia, and they think it will be in the stores by end of april (Sophie did not explicitely say april 2008, though).

Ah ... I had not made the connection that Andreas in in fact the designer Sorry Andreas!
Get thyself on thy knees, earthling!
