Thread: Re: 14.23 Deployment

The maximum unit number of the free and the extra deployment are both limited to the command rating of the deploying leader. You can't exceed this number by forming an Army Group:

Napoleon (CR 8) can gather 7 units and Davout (CR 6) but he can't gather 7 units, Davout and another 6 units due to Davouts CR.

The extra deployment is also quite clear about that, since it only allows an Army, Convoy or a Fleet to be deployed but not an Army Group (Army and Army Group are two different entities, see Glossary).

As soon as you've reached the final destination during your deployment you MUST form an army group if multiple Leaders and excess Units (which you may have brought with you) are present (see 9.6). You don't have to form an army Group if the additional Leaders/Units present belong to another allied Player Power (but I'd strongly suggest that the Allies agree upon forming a mulitnational Army Group under the command of one of the present Leaders - see 9.7.2).

Note also that you may include Pact Minor Units within an army but no units of another Player Power which may only be moved together within an Army Group.

Another tip: If you're unclear about any passage, look ALL capitalized terms within this passage up in the Glossary. That helped me a lot.
Actually, the Irish Rebellion of 1798 (and minor 1803) was a severe thorn in the British side, coupled with the threat of French support and landing of troops within the isles. This card in my mind indicates the historic possibilty of the revolt having succeeded (which may have happened had the French fleet not been blown around by poor weather at sea twice, ending with Wolfe Tone's capture)
To (re-)answer your original question, 8.33 requires that you have the permission of all the powers of the Camp to which you are switching by declaring war on either a Power or an Ally's Neutral Client. You may declare war on another player Power.

bert_nerdsen wrote:
dirubin wrote:
4.
Thread: Some questions to 1.3f

Hiya,

since I'm a new player to NapWars, I refer to the newest ruleset 1.3f and don't know about older versions. It's likely, that there will be some more questions later on, but these are the ones that I got at the moment:

1. As a Player Power in a Camp there are only two ways to DoW an ally:
- DoW an allies Neutral Client for 7 CPs during your Impulse.
- Switch Camps in the Interphase.
In both cases, you'd need permission of all members of the opposite camp.
Is this right?

2. As a Subject Neutral, do you need permission of Camp A in order to DoW on a Nation in Camp B (since you would need to join Camp A)?

3. Are there any clear restrictions on changing the commander of a multi-national Army Group (except for that restructuring the Army Group needs to happen during the new commander's impulse)? This sounds like an army group could move quite a distance in one round.

4. "Only one army may siege" - per impulse or per fortress in an impulse? I first thought "per impulse" but later there's written "a fortress may only be sieged once per impulse and only by one army" which would be a completely redundant information if the former was meant in the first place.

As I said, there will be surely some more questions to come up, but thanks for the start.

Greets,
Nils

hm... think i'll get those vik minis, hope they're somewhat bigger than risk minis, since i think that the latter would be swallowed by the range of the deluxe map. after all, the <strike>boats</strike> ships wouldn't be supplied with eagle games runners anyway. thanks for your help!

Edit:
So after all I've got the Viktory 2 miniatures. I must say that they've got the optimal size (slightly smaller than the Axis n Allies MB miniatures) and I could hardly imagine any other miniatures which suit better to the game. So if you plan to spice up this game with minis those are definetley first choice.

Thread: Re: Card changes from 1st to 2nd ed

Played it for the first time tonight, and that Irish Revolt card was devastating.

The Royal Navy suffered some bad luck - a first impulse strike for Trafalgar was stymied by 'In Irons' then bad combat roles, the RN losing 3 Fleets in the first Turn, and the French had lost 2 Spanish and 1 Frog.

The Danish reserve card was duly read, and we realized that Britain is in serious trouble. The Franco/Danish/Spanish Alliance, with 4 Reinforcements for Spain, the Danish Reserve, 18 French, means the French player could build 5-6 ships this turn, while Britain, saddled with A full blown Irish revolt, has just 2 Reinforcement coming in.

It is strange that Britain gets so little resources in the game. I seem to recall they had the resources to rapidly expand their Navy and secure material and funds to support the Allies.

One could suppose the design factors in British loans by making them inherent to the others.

The British asked for the Russians to send their fleet to the North Sea!

The question was also asked - can you loan CPs?

Thread: Re: Miniature Scale

You might try 6mm or 2mm figures. Irregular Miniatures in the UK make their infantry figures in blocks in both scales. So you could paint them up and not have to base them separately. They're small, but the Napoleonic uniform colors should make the sides easy to distinguish. If needed, you might consider adding a flag that is larger than scale to aid in recognition:

6mm: blocks are about 22mm wide:

2mm: blocks are about 15mm wide and come in 2, 3, and 6 rank blocks:

Hiya,

to all users who modded their edition with miniatures: Which scale for which map do you recommend? I guess that using any minis with the standard map will bust it's proportions at least around the german states. The Super Deluxe Map instead will surely give players the possibility to add minis. But which ones? The smallest option would be Risk minis. Next size I guess would be the Viktory II minis as to be found at the TNW image gallery. How comfortable is playing with those? Has anyone yet tried a conversion with 1/72 airfix, hät etc. plastic soldiers?

Greetz,
Nils

Thread: Re: Card changes from 1st to 2nd ed

And what were they thinking with that Danish home card/reserve? A killer squadron for the Danish fleet?!? The one that was sunk twice? And a response card, at that! Why do the Danes always get their 'super admiral' and yet the British, who ought to be able to put Lord Nelson in command, have to hope to draw that card from the deck?!?

On the topic, what gives with that 'Irish Revolt' potentially taking away 4 of 6 British reinforcement CPs? How does a revolt in Ireland drain off that much strength in any rational universe?

This to me is a huge problem with CDGs in general, and GMT in particular. Are we playing a wargame here, or a card game? If the British know a revolt in Ireland is so devastating, they will probably just garrison a couple cities there. Just as, the game really cries out for Britain to make that pact with Sweden. But...the British player knows that Bernodotte card is there, and given the hand sizes of France and Spain, there is a reasonable chance they will get the card, and undo that--and it is not even really a case of taking ops points away from France then, because France would probably always choose to play the card and take Sweden neutral regardless of whether Britain completes the pact.

I enjoy the multiplayer dynamic of this game, with self-interested allies trying to get each other to bear the brunt of the war with France, while trying to reap the majority of the rewards themselves. But those cards are honestly almost as bad as 'Twilight Imperium' and though the new cards make drawing a given card less likely, at least two have made the 'memorize and anticipate' aspect far worse.

Thread: Re: Anyone received the 2d edition reprint yet?

I got mine today, woo hoo!

I just perused the cards - I haven't studied them - so this is sketchy, sorry.

Many of the cards have changed, such as Ireland Rebels, which is now discarded after the event occurs, but hurts Britain each interphase instead, if not squelched.

The 20 new cards have a slightly higher average than first 90 cards (which was 3.9), <strike>but the new average for the whole deck is still under 4.0.</strike> Edit: just got back from lunch where I actually counted cards. Because they've made some other point cost changes, the average now is exactly 4.0: 22 each of 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s. One of the point cost changes I noticed is Palace Intrigue, an old favorite of ours, which now costs 4 and has changed considerably. You no longer draw a card from your opponent's hand, giving them the Palace Intrigue to play as CPs on their next impulse. Instead, you simply void their Reserve card for that turn - ouch!

Some new ones, on a simple thought experiment, seem like they'll never be used as the event (one that removes refit markers, for example - we don't do much with fleets, and one that seems aimed at multi-player play, and we only play it as a two-player game).

Two of the new cards can give you a resource if you control lots of places in either the Med or the Baltic. Lots of battle and response cards - I really don't like Mud, I must say, as it lingers. In fact, some of the old cards are now Timed Events like Mud, and, strictly as a thought experiment, I really don't like the concept. We may play without that rule. You can read the new rule in the online rules, and Mud is used in the online Playbook example.

Some cards impact the new Looting rules (ported from Wellington), and a few grant new squadrons to Britain or France if certain conditions are met.

That's all I've had time to absorb - back to work for me! In general, most look good and useful. Some look to be non-events for us, and I'm skeptical about the Timed Events, but we'll try them before throwing the rule out.

Thread: Re: New rulebook and playbook posted at GMT

At first glance, I see no changes to the playbook but the rules have evolved for sure. There are a number of other changes to the various player aids so it is quite correct to consider the latest release a "2nd edition" rather than a straight reprint. The upgrade kit did not contain a new map so I assume that changes to it, if any, are very minor. I would be going for the "deluxe" map for its increased durability but it is just too darn big for my dining room table (and I believe it would still be the 1st edition version in any event)!
i have added the 2008 update kit to the geek, it is in the queue to be approved.

GMT are using different names for the 2008 edition, some places it is called the 2nd Edition and it is also called the 2008 reprint, and we know that it is not a straight reprint of the 2002 edition

the new edition of the living rules are called version 1.31f, the playbook does not have a version number but does have the year 2008 on each page.

GMT have not added a new page to their website for the new edition, yet, i am not sure if they will.

when we get the new edition, then we can see the full extent of the changes to the map and cards etc.

Thread: Re: New rulebook and playbook posted at GMT

I hope to find out this weekend. At first glance I like the look of the rules tweaks, but play will help us to decide. One change I particularly welcome is that proxy allies no longer make you responsible for their keys. Denmark and Sweden (with their inclination to yield to conquest) were always doubtful allies in my view but now they can be used (and abused) with relative impunity. Can't wait to try!!

Thread: Re: Anyone received the 2d edition reprint yet?

I received my 2nd edition "upgrade" package the other day (I live in western Canada). The "home cards" are now built-in to the country templates and no longer count against your "hand." Twenty(?) new cards are now in the deck some of which are new "timed event" cards which have a specific expiration condition or can be terminated by a special die roll taken after any player faction plays at least one card. Allied proxy keys no longer are the owning player's "responsibility." Having allied proxies thus no longer has a downside. Your country's success is strictly measured by the gain or loss of keys by your player country. You now can now gain resources through routing your opponent. Finally, a Subject Neutral (one that was either conquered or submitted) has an opportunity to draw to maximum when resuming play (at a cost but a reasonable one).

How the delivery schedule for the wholly reprinted game compares to the upgrade kit I can't say...
