What's up with that? Besides the rule inconsistencies, I mean, i see people get carried by fliers all the time in comics, but I can hardly remember the last time I ever saw anyone get TK'd into battle.

Thread: Re: Heroclix Review for mid-2008 updates

I gave up on Heroclix a year or so ago when it became too laborious to keep up with all the new sets, 'exclusives' and 'specials'. The hype for the new sets began immediately at the release of the last set.

I agree with your comments on what created the downside of Heroclix. Unfortunately, it's many of the things that were integral to the game to begin with: hard to read dials, fiddly add-ons, breaking figures through normal use, expense, etc. I went and did something about it though. I created specific hero cards for every figure in the game (Including Galactus and Spectre). Each card had the strength and powers of each attribute, space to put carried tokens, all info on the piece and so forth - all in color. Each card is about the size of a 3x5" index card.

Suddenly it was fun to play again. I made magifiers out of pieces of a magnifying ruler and the cards can be read without reading glasses again (this was one of my big complaints - I was constantly flipping my glasses on and off again).

Other advantages were that you could keep the current status on the card and were less likely to break the figures by turning the dials. I used bead cups also to mark the flyers. Little did I know that Wizkids would soon start selling the figures with their own cards, but I like mine better.

Oh, and also it obviated the need for getting the promo figures and such. By using the card for a promo figure you could use any base figure of the hero that you want with the stats that you want.

I made it through about the first 20 'sets' of the figures and could send them to you if you're interested. Just geekmail me with your regular email address and I'll send some along. They're not tournament legal but they do make playing fun again.

Thread: Heroclix Review for mid-2008 updates

Another year, and another round of changes for Heroclix. This year's updates haven't been as drastic as the "v2.007" doom and gloom that fans had been wary of, but there were some significant revisions.

I'm not anywhere near a "pro" level player; I lose more often than I win, but I've been slogging through it the past four and below are my thoughts on the game as it stands now.

Here are the different aspects of the game that will hopefully interest new and old players. It is presented in no particular order of significance, and most of the rules elements are treated separately.

Is it fun?

Originally this was to be the closing of my review, but I decided to move it up for new players thinking to take the plunge.

My answer for newcomers ... is conditional: If you play with others of the same level, I would say it would be very fun for novices. However, most players will most likely walk into their local venue never having played and get crushed by the regulars.

If you're willing to devote some time to get through the steep learning curve, it's very rewarding.

The rules are bit deep, and more importantly I would say the meta/team construction is daunting and somewhat demoralizing for new players when they put together a team that represents a comic theme or their favorite characters but they get steamrolled by some no-name or second rate characters from the comic world.

One positive is that good figures are quite easy to come by these days, be it as "common" rarity figures or even limited editions.

For players who've left Heroclix, some (but not all) issues have been addressed, and I would say it's a good time to try it again.

Sculpt design/quality

One of the more visually noticeable changes to the game is the removal of flight stands and "soaring" flight. This has both gameplay as well as cosmetic effects.

Wizkids claimed that this would allow them to create more dynamic sculpts (and also reduce production costs, which at least they were honest in stating). The latter is likely true, but I've yet to meet anyone in person nor online who agrees with the former.

We're now 2 sets into this, and flying figures no longer look like they are "flying", to put it bluntly. Additionally, flying figures are now mounted on a very small soft connector (similar to the Ultimates Wolverine or SCUBA Batman from years ago), which are quite easy to break when turning the dial.

The other, more annoying aspect is the affect on gaming. Flight is now, in game times, more like a powerful leap ability. One example is the (more than the obvious removal of soaring) is that grounded figures adjacent to fliers also prevent the fliers from using ranged combat.

Anyhow, I've gone a bit off from the original topic of the sculpts themselves, but the effect on gameplay is intertwined. Overall, sculpts are on par with those from the previous sets like Armor Wars (most are better than the poor showings in Avengers) -- nothing fantastic, but a few shine here and there.

Painting is in general cleaner than from years past as the ink washes are less messy (if they are used at all). What I appreciate most is that most of the time eyes are painted properly.

Keyword Themes

Keywords were supposedly introduced[to my knowledge] to counter the fact that many advanced players were just putting together teams of random figures which synergized best for the most powerful meta-build.

Unfortunately, I don't think it was a success in that regard. It just introduces more ways for the power gamer to take advantage of advanced bonuses. It should have made the game more "comic accurate" (at least in my opinion), but you'll still find many random figure collected together for teams like "scientists" or "armor".

To be honest it's fun building for it, but for me it's only for the meta-combo aspect of it. I still try to put some kind of theme beyond just keywords (i.e. lately I build a green skinned non-Hulk "brute" team, as well as a dual-wielding gun slinger "soldier" warband), but with the exception of the team name keywords, it's mostly just a random hodgepodge of figures.

Special Powers

One area I can assuredly say I'm 100% happy with is special powers. In the past it was hard to get me excited as many of the characters just seemed the same rehash of power combinations. That may still be true, but special powers are leaps and bounds closer to comic representation.

There are complaints here and there, but in general I haven't found that it over-complicates the rules. Even new players we've introduced the game to are excited about this prospect (most likely due to the fact that it is explained on each stat card and there's no lookup needed like the other powers on the stat cards).

Feats

Many Heroclix "purists" still lament the introduction of these little goodie cards. I personally love them -- as you may have guessed if you've read this far, I try to stay true to the comics -- this means I often have to use figures that are universally panned as worthless, so feats are a necessity for me.

The new updates limit feats to 10% of the point total build. I think that's a bit extreme -- 20% would have been my vote. But I suppose it's been "thoroughly" game tested (or just that the most vocal fans complained more...).

I like the limitation of feats, but I think it's a bit too extreme for my playstyle.

In terms of the new feats being introduced, there is still the wild variation of very useful to complete garbage. The worst aspect of the new feats is that the more useful ones (or abusable, some would say, such as Warbound, Maneuver, or the only tourney legal Protected) are prizes only.

Collecting

Another area where I commend Wizkids. Now that popular characters can be found as commons, most of the time you'll be quite happy with the booster you buy (though not always... my last Secret Invation pack had a Power Pack kid I don't care for, and a bunch of other forgettable/obscure characters). Nevertheless, commons these days can often carry the team as the frontline tank and are no longer relegated to just fodder.

For those who supplement their collection with acquisitions on the secondary market, prices in general are also much more under control. Valuable limited editions and super-rares can be had between $10-25, which is essentially the cost of 1-2 boosters.

Now, I know many people shun buying on Ebay, but for most of us that's a lot more economical than buying 10 boosters hoping to pull one super rare that you may not even want or never being good enough to win an LE. I will also disclose that even though I buy online, everytime I play at local stores I always purchase a booster or two.

Event Support

I realize that many players gather in casual settings, but at least in my area of Southern California the players at all the venues I can find only are interested in official events. For me, that's actually a disappointment, so hopefully you have better luck.

There seem to be more officially supported events these days, no doubt to drum up more sales. A positive change is that now some WK-sanctioned events allow for retired figures.

Prizes are a mixed bag. There are a lot less LE figure prizes (those almost all are decent, usable figures now), and feats and event dials are the other awards. It seems with the Topps acquisition and cost cutting measures, this was the way to support more events.

Standard Powers/Abilities

Unfortunately, not much has changed here. There's still the usual confusion about which powers work with others, as well as when they come into play. WK has attempted to streamline this by reducing some options (i.e. limiting the Hypersonic Speed options), but this really doesn't address the main problems of the band-aid fixes that have been bolted on over the years.

There's also a new play level system that officially allows players to agree upon which elements of the game can be omitted.

All this seems to me like they've reduced gameplay options but haven't truly streamlined the game's problem areas.

On a positive note, Perplex finally lasts through to your next turn like Outwit and In Contact with Oracle. Also, new characteristics like Indomitable (a built-in Willpower for your figure's complete dial) add new elements that, while welcome, add to the complexity.

Final Thoughts

My biggest complaint is still the fact that you must memorize the dials to excel. I see no purpose for this except to reward power gamers who either have photographic memory or have hundreds of hours to devote to studying the dials. I suppose Haloclix wasn't popular enough for them to continue that game's trend of printing the dial on the cards.

Anyhow, that rant aside, you can probably see that I'm a bit ambivalent about the game in general. I play it biweekly and want to have the motivation to play it more, but it takes a back seat to other CMGs that are more streamlined and cause less frustration.

I still highly recommend this to comic geek gamers over Heroscape -- the only competitor I could think of -- but judged on its own merit as a game without the comic franchises and hypothetically a unique intellectual property WK created, I would probably not touch it.

Thread: The wife and I play a Dark Knight themed affair

After watching the very entertaining Batman movie, the wife decided that she wanted to have a good ole fashioned throw-down betwixt the Caped Crusader and his arch nemesis, Ceaser Romero (I painted a moustache on my fig). This, of course, was one of those moments that you do not hesitate to capitalize on the better half's gaming enthusiasm, so I ran upstairs and poored all the clix on the game table and started sorting.

She eventually made her way upstairs with her usual glacial pace, and claimed the Bat for her own, and it looked like he brought Robin, his daughter, and the whole darn Gotham PD. Meanwhile, Joker called Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Scarecrow, and Two-Face on the celly and told them to meet him in the park for a little scrap.

Things began with Batman and the Huntress moving to cover behind the statue in the center of the park supported by some of Gotham's finest. The bad guys wasted no time or effort, and began the shooting gallery tagging a couple of cops in the process. One cop quickly went down, and a couple more were wounded, but they continued the pursuit.

Batman and the Huntress counterassaulted a hopped up Killer Croc who had charged in earlier and wounded the beast with some costumed Karate. The cops pressed the attack and managed to take out ole Harvey Dent before he could flip his coin to decide if he should run away.

Joker and Mr. Freeze took some well aimed shots at the Unstealthy Bat causing him to grunt and what not, and Scarecrow flanked the Huntress while she was locked in a struggle with the Croc.

The combined efforts of Crow and Croc wounded the Huntress deeply (and possibly emotionally) but with the help of Batman she managed to get rid of her aggressors without the need for Equal Opportunity or HR.

In an uncharacteristic move, Batman was shot dead by Mr. Freeze while doing the "Happy Dance" over Killer Croc'c carcass, but this was the last hurrah for both Mr. Freeze and the Joker as Robin and the Fuzz closed the net and apprehended the bullet riddled corpses of the evil doers.

She won, but I had fun.

Thread: Fifty Two: The Campaign

Its time for a new Heroclix campaign and I’m currently reading volume#1 of DC’s weekly series “52”. In this spirit I decided that a campaign based loosely on this would be an interesting idea.

The basic rules are simple:
The heroes can take any character who is worth less than 100 points
The heroes can take any hero except for Nightwing, Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman or Robin (from my collection anyway!)
The villains have no such restrictions
The battle is played with the normal rules
Either side can “pull out” (much as in my civil war campaign)

The villains that get KO’d are in prison and can be “rescued” as a spoil of victory. The heroes that are KO’d are rolled for to see what their condition is, which can mean them missing a number of battles or even them being killed outright!

Battle#1 and an outdoor map is chosen (because it was the newest map in my collection).
The villains in this scenario are an interesting mixed bunch. Black Adam leads Mammoth and Shimmer, along with Cheetah, Bane, Man-Bat and Merlyn.
The Heroes attempting to stop them, in the absence of the “A” heroes like Superman and Batman, are lead by Hawkman and the team comprises Shadow Girl (AKA Umbra) Ragman, Booster Gold, Wildcat, Timberwolf,. Lightning Lad and Blue Devil.

The villains moved forwards with Harley Quinn taking cover in the shadows and Man-Bat flanking out to the right. Hawkman flew forwards to take on Man-Bat. A fussilade of arrows from Merlyn managed to penetrate Hawkman’s defences though and left him wounded.

Cheetah moved out from cover and engaged in hand to hand combat with Shadow Girl. This was a bit of a phoney war as Shadow Girl couldn’t land a punch on Cheetah and Cheetah couldn’t hurt Shadow Girl. In the end, neither had done any significant damage to the other

Booster Gold opened fire from the centre at Mammoth but was unable to halt him. Mammoth charged down Booster and drove him backwards with a barrage of punches. Wildcat moved around to aid Booster but even the pair of them couldn’t do any real damage to Mammoth, whose power was boosted by having his sister, Shimmer, in his LOS.

Meanwhile Bane moved it to fight Ragman. The two traded blows but Ragman couldn’t do enough damage to halt Bane Bane found Ragman a tougher opponent than he might have expected and was unable to catch hold of him. Timberwolf flew in to attack Harley Quinn (In the mis-match of the day) and quickly overwhelmed her (despite her dodging his first attack). Shimmer focused her attacks on Ragman too and Bane managed to get in a couple of hits and the pair had quickly overthrown Ragman.

Hawkman, despite his wounds, overpowered Man-Bat in a one sided contest and battered him down and out. Merlyn had focused his arrows on other targets, helping Mammoth to knock out Wildcat (and Mammoth had needed no help at all to send Booster Gold flying). Black Adam had charged Blue Devil, contemptuously shrugging off his weapons fire and knocking him out of the sky with a typically fierce barrage of blows.

With Mammoth running amok and Black Adam still unharmed, the heroes sensed this was not to be their day and the retreat order went out.

Its 1-0 to the villains in “52”
More to come when we continue the series
Thread: Re: The Civil War

Battle number 7 in the Civil War series. We used the indoor map again (to save getting a new map out!)

The Pro-Reg forces were once again lead by Ironman but this time it was the all-star team as Captain Mar-Vel and Thor joined Ironman. With a spare 40 points, they took Tigra

The Anti-Reg forces, down to the bare bones, took Captain America, Dagger, Johnny Storm, Patriot, Wolverine, Daredevil, Ironfist and the Vision.

Early on the Pro-Reg force flew out, using thier running shots to drive both Wolverine and Iron-fist back, badly damaged. Dagger was then the victim of a pair of shots from Ironman and was, once again, knocked out.

Johnny Storm dodged and dived and escaped the melee attack of Captain Mar-Vel and Daredevil was able to weave between a sequence of Energy blasts from Ironman and lightning bolts from Thor. Thor then landed to trade hand-to-hand blows with Captain America and Patriot. The pair were unable to cause any real damage and were quickly being pinned back by the Asgardian.

Tigra then joined Daredevil in a melee, the two trading leaping attacks in an agile battle. Daredevil was able to avoid Tigra's attacks but unable to do any real damage of his own. Meanwhile, Vision opened fire repeatededly on Ironman, to no avail.

Suprisingly, Captain America decided to give in and withdraw his team, perhaps for the last time.....

Its 7-6 for the Pro-Reg side and Marie is contemplating whether her team can keep going as they are down to hier bare-bones now......

Thread: Re: The Civil War

Battle#6 of the Civil War, an indoor map and lots of cluttered spaces

The Anti-Registration forces, mindful that they are normally outnumbered, lined up with Ironman, Cable, Golliath, Wasp, Nighthawk, She Hulk and Tigra.

The Pro-Registration forces were lead by Captain America and contained Torch, Iron-Fist, Daredevil, Wolverine, Patriot, Cloak + Dagger and Hercules.

Straight away the Anti-Registration forces tried to make thier numbers count. Iron-Fist moved around the left flank and Johnny Storm flew around the right. The rest of the Anti-Reg forces moved down the centre, broken up by the terrain pieces.

Ironman flew out to match Ironfist, She Hulk following up. Ironman opened fire ont he martial arts expert and one fierce volley was enough to see Iron-Fist running first for cover, and then fleeing the map

On the right, Cable moved from cover and opened fire on Cloak, scoring a bad hit on the youngster (his outwit skill trumped Cloak's super-senses.) Dagger moved up to back her partner up, firing at Tigra. The two then engaged in a fierce hand to hand brawl. Golliath went head to head with Hercules and both sides braced for the epic brawl. But Golliath was a man possessed and two fierce blows went unanswered. Wasp then flew up behind Hercules and knocked him out with a blast in the back.

Meanwhile Ironman followed to the rear of the Anti-Reg force and blasted Patriot, so much so that the youngster also fled the map. The Anti-Registration force had taken cover on the right flank of the map, engaging in several melees. Torch blasted both Cable and Tigra, wounding them both and Wolverine followed in to make short work of Nighthawk (the moving target) in a one-sided melee.

Cable stuck to his guns though and traded shots with Torch and then his former team-mate, Wolverine. Dagger was getting the beest of Tigra and Cloak, wounded and without his major powers, decided to flee. However, on his way off the map he was picked off by Ironman. Ironman then followed up behind the Anti-Reg force and blasted Dagger in the back, knocking her out too

Captain America was joined in a melee with She-Hulk and the two traded blows to no avail (the whole time, She-Hulk was trying to persuade Cap that she could understand what he was doing but that he needed to stop breaking the law!) Captain America could see his team's edge in numbers eroded down and called for a withdrawal.

Tigra was traded back for Dagger in the prisoner exchange and Nighthawk was returned as spoils of battle. Hercules and Cloak were kept as prisoners of the Pro-Registration faction.

Its now 3-3 in the series and Ironman is clearly the MVP for the Pro-Reg force (how apt!)

Thread: Re: The Civil War

Battle#5 of the Civil War, the Anti-Registration forces have been licking thier wounds return to the fray ready for the next round.

The Anti-Registration forces lined up in thier now almost routine fashion: Captain America lead Torch, Cloak + Dagger, Wolverine, Daredevil, Hulkling + Patriot.
The Pro-Registration force was a top heavy force of Ironman, Captain Mar-Vel, Venom, Bullseye, Stature, Wasp and Tigra.

The battle took place on the Watchtower map (I know, most of my maps are DCU maps!) The Pro-Registration forces started off with a fierce attack through the centre towards the control room. Bullseye took cover near the doorway, flanked by Tigra and Wasp. Stature moved down the right flank to take on Captain America (taking a deep breath before she swung at a man she idolised!) and Ironman raced down the right flank, firing repeatedly at the recent jail-break Hulkling. Two quick blasts in succession and Hulkling was KO'd again. First blood the Pro-Reg forces.

Venom, meanwhile, looked forward to a re-match with Wolverine and the two began to trade some fierce blows. However Patriot moved round to help him out and the two began to batter Venom down.

In the centre ground, Cloak teleported in to batter down Bullseye, a couple of nunchuck throws later from Daredevil and Bullseye was forced to flee for cover. On his way out on the flank, he was blasted by Dagger and knocked out

Tigra then leapt into battle against Cloak but just could not hit him. She swung, clawed and spat but Cloak simply phased in and out, avoiding her attacks and sapping her energy.

Ironman, fresh from knocking out Hulkling, flew after Johny Storm. Ironamn kept up the chase, firing and repelling fire from the Fantastic Four member. Captain Mar-Vel, meanwhile, had given up on shooting at Captain America, only to see his shots deflected by Cap's shield. So Mar-Vel turned a corner to attack Johny Storm too. A fierce dog-fight was begun but Mar-Vel just could not get hold of the FF member.

Wolverine, however, was an easier target for Ironman who turned his fire on Wolverine. A concentrated effort from Ironman and Venom and Wolverine was battered to the ground. As Wolverine tried to get back up, Ironman, testing his suits limits, amped up the fire and took down the X-man.

But the battle on the flank was going badly against Stature, now fighting both Captain America and Dagger. Wasp flew in to help but one fierce PSI blast from Daggger had her running for the hills. As Cloak continued to batter down Tigra and Johny Storm had evaded the attacks of Mar-Vel and Ironman, it became clear that the Anti-Registration forces were getting the upper hand. Ironman signalled all units to pull out and withdraw. It was a victory to the Anti-Registration forces.

Hulkling and Wolverine had both been captured but Wolverine was recaptured (as spoils of victory) Bullseye, however, was kept in a cell by the Anti-Registration forces, Nick Fury making sure he couldnt run again (and get another get out of jail free card)

Its 3-2 to the Anti-Registration forces

Thread: Re: The Civil War

Its battle#4 of the Civil War and the Pro-Registration forces, in desperation, have turned to the Thunderbolts (super-villains who have been offered get of jail cards in return for thier cooperation)

The Pro-Registration Forces lined up (with thunderbolts) as Ironman, Thor, Blade, Wasp, Bullseye, Venom and Radioactive Man.
The Anti-Registration Forces (flushed with victory) picked the de-riguer force of Captain America, Cable, Cloak + Dagger, Wolverine, Torch + Vision. We used the down-town Metropolis map.

The two teams started off on opposite sides of the street and for a change, we had parity of numbers. Previously the Anti-Reg forces have had an edge in numbers. The Pro-Reg team moved up, using cover to conceal Thor, Wasp and Bullseye, ready to start shooting. The Anti-Reg forces moved into the bottleneck, Cable flanking left and Wolverine and Vision flanking right. Venom roped in to begin a fierce fist fight with Wolverine that saw Wolverine absorb a scary amount of punsihment. When Vision tried to make it 2 on 1, Wasp flew over to try and draw fire from Vision....Avenger Vs Avenger!

Radioactive Man battled with Torch (and then Cloak) in the centre of the field. However Ironman flew down, firing energy blasts and, after a concerted effort, knocked out Cloak. Radioactive Man took a pounding at the hands of Torch but surivived the onslaught. Meanwhile Blade succumbed to a series of firey blasts from Torch.

Cable, the bane of the Pro-Reg forces, came under a fierce assault from Thor who buffetted him with a series of lightning bolts that nearly knocked him out. Retreating into cover to avoid capture, Cable was then set upon by Ironman who pushed himself and his armour to knock out Cable too.

Seeing the writing on the wall as Wolverine was gradually being overpowered by Venom, the Anti-Reg team bugged out....

The "spoils" of Victory saw Cable convert (as per the comics) to a Pro-Registration way of thinking. The Prisoner Exchange was made and Stature, Blade and Nighthawk were swapped for Cloak + Hulkling. In future, these exchanges will be VOLUNTARY rather than enforced. It was also decided that by using the Thunderbolts, the Pro-Reg faction would lose some fo the moral argument and that if the Anti-Reg forces won, they could take Spiderman as thier spoils of victory!

So its two all in the civil war and its finely balanced

Thread: The Civil War

Taking my inspiration from the Marvel cross-over story Civil War and using my collection to recreate as much of the story in a campaign of linked Heroclix battles.

Basically the system of the campaign was that each of us took the heroes that fought for their side during the Civil War (either Pro-Registration or Anti-Registration). There was also a sizable roster of Neutral Marvel characters that were made available for selection later on. Some characters that SHOULD have been available werent due to me not having that model, so there was no Yellowjacket and no Namor.

The rules:
Simply that each battle would be 500 points, with as many activations as you have team members (a house rule we usually play with, as otherwise larger teams tend to get overwhelmed by smaller ones) The usual break off rules WOULDNT apply (IE no break off roll necessary) and that either side can call a cease-fire (to end the battle and concede victory to the other team). The winning team gets to add a new heroclix to its roster of available guys. The KO'd characters can be exchanged back for others OR can be rescued (with a win)

Marie has played as the Anti-Registration forces and I've controlled the pro-regisstration force

So far we've fought out three battles and I hope we'll fight a few more!

Battle 1# (Town square map)
In our first battle, Marie’s anti-registration team of Luke Cage, Cloak + Dagger, Cable, Nighthawk, Stature and Daredevil took on my pro-registration team of Ironman, Thor, Spiderman, Wasp, Tigra and She Hulk. And the Pro-Reg guys won the day, capturing and converting Stature and Nighthawk and just plain capturing Luke Cage. We lost She-Hulk in the process but got her back as our spoils of victory!

Battle 2# (Manhattan Downtown map)
The second battle saw Pro-Reg forces lead by Ironman and containing Blade, Captain Mar-Vel, Golliath, Nighthawk and Tigra take on the Anti-Reg force of Captain America, Human Torch, Cloak, Hercules, Cable, Wolverine and Patriot. Golliath was captured and Nighthawk was knocked out (again) and captured by the anti-reg force whilst Patriot was knocked out by combined efforts of Ironman and Mar-Vel. In the end there was a prisoner exchange for the two and then the Anti-Reg forces broke Dagger out of the Prison at 42

Battle 3# (STARS Lab, ok sorry that its a DCU map but what are you gonna do)
The third battle had Pro-Reg force under Ironman (of course) Stature, Mister Fantastic (who was anything but) Bishop, Spiderman and She-Hulk. They were opposed by the Anti-Reg group of Human Torch, Cable, Iron Fist, Cloak + Dagger, Patriot and Hulkling. The Pro-Reg force lost Stature (the other recent turncloak whose glass jaw isnt a very useful superpower) and the Anti-Reg force lost Hulkling. However it was the Pro-Reg force that was forced to bug-out again. The Anti-Reg force then broke Luke Cage out of the negative zone prison.

Comments, observations:
So far the dominating factor has been the low points cost VS high quality of the Anti-registration force opposed to the lack of choice I face with my pro-registration faction.

Thor has fought very successfully in each battle, as has Captain Mar-Vel and Ironman (who has been involved in every battle so far. However Marie has made very effective use of Cloak + Dagger (100 points for the pair) and Hulkling (despite he got KO'd in the last fight) Cable is also a nightmare, with his running shot, 10 attack and outwit (for 3 damage) he's a PAIN to deal with!

So the civil war score is 2-1 to the Anti-Registration faction and I think I'll have to deploy the Thunderbolts next time out!

More to come if/when we get around to it!

OK, I picked those up

So a dozen Alpha Flighters and Wolverine are about it for Canadian Heroclix.

I don't think DC has a Canadian hero in clix form, and only a few two bit characters in comicbook form.
Thread: Re: Use old figs with new rules and powers card?
Plus most of the older figures are just not competitive compared to the newer figures. In the first couple of years a figure was considered a high damage dealer if he had 3 damage, 4 or 5 was really high. Now 3 is pretty much an average damage. And the last year or so of sets has raised the figures' defense values so the older figures really have trouble competing since their low attack values mean they have a hard time hitting yet their low defense values means they are easy prey. Granted there are a few exceptions but pretty much any figure from Marvel Universe back are going to get creamed by the newer sets.

But technically any old figure is compatible with the current figures and can be played together. It's just that the balance has changed in terms of what's a good stat and what's a low stat.

Hi

I like this game a lot, although rarely get to play.

I haven't bought anything for a while, but am interested if any recent sets have Canadian super heroes, basically Alpha Flight members.

At present I have
Puck
Wild Child
Vindicator
Northstar
Aurora
Marrina
Snowbird
Sasksquatch
Shaman
Diamond Lil
and as a guest Wolverine

So am wondering are there heroclix for the likes of Centennial, Talisman, Box, Yukon Jack, Major Maple Leaf, Guardian, Nemesis etc

If not anyone out there do good custom paints?

thanks

Not only did I spent way to much time making the below 3D board but I also create a 2D version of the map as well as all the special rules and lists of figures you’ll need to try it out for you self. It's so easy to complete a set now, it's ridiculous. Check out the secondary market and you will commonly find entire sets selling for prices that are quite low or reasonable.

Check out some of the heroclix forums while you are at it and tell me the number of complaint threads about diversity and distribution aren't nil or non-existent now.

People who think the reduced set size increases the number of duplicates seem to have forgotten about the days of getting 6 rookie commons in the past.

I has its pluses and minuses-

Positives:
-Characters that are new, or never really change over the years can be represented in a single figure without using a unique slot.
-More total sculpts overall.
-When there are multples of the same figure they will have completely different sculpts i.e. Beast in the Mutations and Monsters set.

Negatives:
-Less flexibility in team building. In the past there were 3 of each piece with a range of point values to choose from- you could have a team with exactly the same characters and point total play differently just by changing up the character levels.
-Less chances they will get a piece "right". Most characters will only get one version in a set, if it stinks it may be a while till they get back to it.
-The reduced set size has drastically increased the amount of duplicates you will pull before you have a complete set.

Hate it?? I Love it!!!

So many REVs were just a waste of plastic, particularly the Rookies.
The most important thing I see with the new system is greater and better disparity. I'm buying cases and actually getting every Common, uncommon, and rare!!! That was unheard of with the REV system.

Even though it's still unlikely that a case will have a lot of Super-Rares, this new system is great in my book. I never want to go back to REVs.

Besides, we are going to continue to get different versions of the same figures, just now in a different set.

Thread: As a 9 players family 3-D Titan Board Game

It was the first time I really dare to put Heroclix on the table for the family play group. Over so many years, I tried and tried to teach people play Heroclix, I failed. The game itself is really simple and straight forward, but talk about the colourful ability (no one ever remember them)and the annoying clickclickclick(broken easily), the whole concept just doesn't work for a game group(no one build "deck" at all). In our group, we play all kinds of boardgame, cardgame, ccg, and yesterday, we boldly tried Heroclix, and we succeeded.

Materials:
Heroclix character points between 60 to 89 including Wolverine, Human Torch, Magneto, Thing, Phoenix, Cyclop, Spider Man, Batman. 1 hero for 1 boy each only.
Overpower ccg cards for each character, plus 2 more any hero cards
Warhammer Terrain,
Heroscape Terrain,
Cars from the miniature game called KRASH,
and a basic board wity lines on it.

Before the game, 4 of the characters were chosen by 4 boys in the group, the other 3 characters became dummy. Dummy could only be used by girls in the group when the Any Hero cards appear. Each player write down 3 character names on the paper. Anyone who pick the right champion character win the game. The game ends when only 3 characters left on table.

So, this is actually a 3-D Titan(Colossal Arena)now. Just shuffle the Overpower cards and draw one each. So, you wouldn't know who is going to move next. Any Hero appeared means the girls need to decide which character to move. Even the girls don't like fighting wargame style too much could really enjoy now.

Flying character can be close attacked with +2defense, and each character can push up to 3 actions. And whenever a player's card was drawn, I told everybody what ability the hero still have. So, Heroclix became a friendly board game at last.

Our Results:
After about 5 turns(5-6 shuffling)(1 Hr 15mins), the champions were: Magneto, Thing, Spider Man.
Four players had 2 scores and 4 players won the game.
Thread: Experienced Villains, separately, school Rookie Thor

The Combatants:
Rookie Thor 112 pts
- 9 CLICKS of damage to defeat Thor

Veteran Radioactive Man 105pts
+ Armor Piercing (can never have damage dealt reduced to less than 1...very useful with poison)
+ Toxic Burst (can poison from TWO squares away)
+ Lucky Break (can re-roll a single '1' on one die, rolled during an attack, once)

Scenario (loosely based on Journey into Mystery #93):
The Radioactive Man, hired by the Chinese government to steal the United States' latest computer-driven tank is confronted by (rookie) Thor; who as an Avenger, has been dispatched by the United Nations to thwart the Radioactive Man.

The First Battle
The Radioactive Man relishes the challenge of fighting Thor and considers it a bonus to his compensation to defeat an Avenger along the way. He wonders, in classic super-villain hubris, why the UN has only sent one super-hero to stop him. From across the battlefield, behind the tank, the Radioactive Man notices Thor picking up a dumpster (super strength) and heading his way. He sees how headstrong the young thunder god is and so he steps forward baiting his trap.

As Thor has just picked up the dumpster, and since the Radioactive Man is within Thor's charge range, the Radioactive Man lures Thor into pushing (and taking an automatic click of damage) and charging him with the dumpster and, most importantly, coming into close combat quarters (charge). Thor successfully smashes the Radioactive Man upside his head with the dumpster which clangs as it crashes to the ground after the blow. Radioactive Man has never been that difficult a target to hit but his radiation field (invulnerability) does a good job of protecting him and makes him difficult to finish off even for an experienced super-hero.

All this attack served to do was bring Thor within close proximity to the Radioactive Man where his radiation field could affect the thunder god (poison with armor piercing and exploit weakness). Since Thor pushed he is temporarily out of actions and cannot do anything at all next round. On Radioactive Man's subsequent turn the first thing that happens is Thor takes a click via Radioactive Man's radiation field (armor piercing + poison).

Then Radioactive Man has a decision to make. So far his trap has worked out flawlessly. Thor is at his mercy for 2 turns and he is scoring automatic damage with his radiation. He needs an 8 to hit Thor with a radiation-backed punch (TWO MORE via exploit weakness). However, he's guaranteed ONE MORE click of radiation poisoning, which will lower Thor's defense another 1, before Thor can even act again as Thor has to rest the next round. It will cost the Radioactive Man an action to attack...a miss would be a missed opportunity forcing him to push himself (and take a valuable click himself) the next round.

Radioactive Man decides that this is his best opportunity to defeat Thor and decides to attack him with all he's got this round AND then continue to let his radiation field do its damage (poison) and exploit Thor's weakness to his radiation power again next round. If he is successful on both rolls he puts 6 total clicks of damage putting Thor within 2 clicks of defeat. He has lucky break too which ultimately tips his decision. He rolls a 5 and a 3 on that first really important attack. The next round, after the radiation poison takes its toll, he just needs a 6 to put two more via exploit weakness. Done.

After exerting this much radiation energy the Radioactive Man takes a click of damage and prepares for Thor's response. It is too little too late as Thor's defense is weakened and the Radioactive Man dispatches the weakened Thor on his way to stealing the new tank technology.

Later that same day....

The Combatants:
Rookie Thor 112 pts
- 9 CLICKS of damage to defeat Thor

E Absorbing Man 112pts
+ Armor Piercing (can never has his damage dealt reduced to less than 1)
+ Lucky Break (can re-roll a single '1' on one die, rolled during an attack, once)

Scenario (loosely based on Journey into Mystery #114)
Having just received his Asgardian based powers, the Absorbing Man is itching for a fight and knows that he has to take down the Mighty Thor to get any of the Asgardian ladies' attention. So, Crusher Creel - The Absorbing Man - heads to New York City, Thor's current stomping ground, to confront Thor.

The Second Battle
Nobody has ever accused the Absorbing Man of being a card-carrying Mensa member. He has supreme confidence in his ability to take a punch - even from the god of thunder. He knows he can't stand by and let Thor sling his enchanted hammer his way or he will lose. So, he waltzes right up to Thor inviting his best shot. Thor sees this new menace wreaking havoc in the streets of mid-town Manhattan and rushes to intervene and save his precious humans.

Despite his defeat earlier in the day when close combat was probably not where he wanted to stage the battle, Thor goes toe-to-toe with the Absorbing Man right off looking for a quick-strike victory using a lamp-post from a nearby corner. Unfortunately for the thunder god, right as he delivered his punch, the Absorbing Man used his newly bestowed Asgardian powers to absorb the physical property of the nearby steel skyscraper turning himself into a human steel girder. Thor's attack rolls right off of the Absorbing Man without dealing any visible damage (impervious).

The Absorbing Man, who has been waiting impatiently to get his licks in, returns the favor by hitting Thor with the force field generator putting 4 clicks on Thor. Thor, a true super-hero, summons his top strength and skill and mashes the Absorbing Man in the face with his hammer Mjolnir (critical hit). But, Thor has exerted himself a bit and is temporarily exposed to the Absorbing Man (two actions on Thor).

This is the Absorbing Man's great opportunity as he uses his ball and chain to hit Thor. But, the speed and agility of a true Asgardian is unluckily unknown to the brutish Absorbing Man and he misses (rolled double 2s - drat can't even use Lucky Break). Enraged, the Absorbing Man pushes himself (two actions on Absorbing Man) misses again with his awesome punch (rolled a 2 - 3...once again cannot use lucky break).

Thor now has a chance to really hurt him, and showing his inexperience against super-villains for the 2nd time today, misses. Absorbing Man is the next one to attack and delivers a powerful smack to Thor (double 5s) which throws Thor back 3 squares (knockback) and puts 3 more clicks of damage on Thor. Thor is so incensed by the brazen villain's affrontery, and having had just about enough of this after having had his lunch handed to him by Radioactive Man earlier, that he forgets about throwing his hammer (battle fury) and will only fight the Absorbing Man hand-to-hand.

However, the Absorbing Man still has his absorbing power (super strength) and can throw the force field generator from distance and so has the range advantage. Absorbing Man uses this tactical advantage to finish off Thor. The rookie Son of Odin ends up having a really, really bad day and thinks to himself "I thought this was going to be easier..." as he watches yet another super-villian walk away taunting him saying "ha! some thunder god...come back when you have some game!"

edit: grammar, spelling

Thread: Who wants Heroclix?!

I'm clearing out a good deal of my Heroclix (okay, most of it) inventory. I've done the Ebaying with the really hard-to-find figures, but now that leaves me with a great deal of Heroclix that aren't, in my opinion, worth my time to put on Ebay.

With that being said, I'd like to offer members of the geek the opportunity to get some sets for their children or themselves for the holidays. I'd like to send some "Heroclix Starter Sets" to anyone interested, free of charge. If you'd like to shoot me some GG or some shipping money via PayPal you can, but it is 100% unnecessary.

If you'd like to get a nice, fun, starter box of miniatures for yourself or your kids, please send me a message via BGG. This really is free-of-charge, and again, I don't expect anything in return. I'd just like to give these figures a good home since I no longer have a need for them.

Happy Holidays!

Sean

EDIT: Please also include shipping information so I can mail them to you! Thanks!

stormseeker75 wrote:
I recently just started with Halo clix and was looking to try Heroclix, but I think you just put me off of it. Part of what makes Halo so much fun is how streamlined it is. Sounds like Heroclix adds a lot of strategy but also a bit too much in the rules department.

The rules were still pretty streamlined up till early 2007, when they added unique abilities that only appeared on the characters' cards. Before then, you could easily play with out BFCs and feat cards and still have a deep game. I really like the Push mechanic even if some people don't, it helps balance out powerful characters as they generally can't attack every turn. It also forces careful planning and risk management.

If you get any of the sets pre-Origins I think you will be fine. My personal favorite sets are Collateral Damage (DC) and Armor Wars (Marvel).

Stick with earlier sets and everything's good.

Same thing for Mechwarrior. Things started downhill when the added the little slots for extra equipment, added pilots, etc., etc.

stormseeker75 wrote:
Sounds like Heroclix adds a lot of strategy but also a bit too much in the rules department.
