I have my eye on this game as I love the Huskers and college football. I don't know much about the game so I don't know what to expect.

It would be great if every team has their own strengths and weaknesses rather then each team being the same. I would love to be able to customize my own deck to make the Huskers the option oriented team of old. Maybe even make some half time adjustments.

Thread: Card Football vs. NCAA Hand Off

I, like many others out there in BGG land, am anxiously awaiting the release of the new NCAA Football® Hand-Off: The Card Football Board Game™. I currently own Card Football: Premiere Edition™ and have to wonder what will be different with the new game? How will the new game, as the CSE Games’ promotions tout, “Feature 20 of the top schools in U.S. college football.”?

Since Hand Off has not been released, this posting can not be a review of the game. But, based on what I know about Card Football, and observations of the limited images of Hand Off, I would like to speculate as to what may be different about the new game.

What is most intriguing, and unknown at this time of course, is how Hand Off will allow players to differentiate between the styles of play between the top college teams. Card Football did not allow players to really “coach” the New York Giants versus the Denver Broncos. OK, you could use a round Team Disk to put into an End Zone that indicated a player was the Denver Broncos and permitted the use of a “Team Card” which had some special abilities in the game. However, there is only 1 Team Card for each team out of the deck of 54 playing cards in the game. I’m no math wizard, but 1 chance out of 54 doesn’t seem like a high probability that a player will actually draw their appropriate Team Card (actually computes to 1.85% probability) and take advantage of its special abilities.

Some side comments about the 32 Team Disks in Card Football: 21 of the disks have the city name of an actual NFL franchise on the disk (Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, etc., and I’m including New Jersey in this list for the New York Jets. There is a New York disk that is red, white and blue, which I assume would be the Giants disk. The New Jersey disk does have some green coloring on it); 4 disks have city names on them for teams that carry state names (Phoenix instead of Arizona, Nashville instead of Tennessee, etc., and I’m including Charlotte instead of Carolina in this list); and 4 disks have city names where there are currently no NFL franchises (Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Vancouver, and Toronto – the latter two were probably included for potential Canadian buyers). There are no disks for current NFL franchises in Buffalo, San Diego, Jacksonville, and Oakland. So if you are a Bills fan, or a Raiders fan, and want to pretend you are coaching your favorite team, you are out of luck for the 1.85% chance of getting a Team Card. Who can leave the Raiders out of a pro-football game?

I could write another paragraph about the terrible graphics on the Team Disks, but I won’t.

Now since Hand Off will feature only 20 teams of U.S. college football, there would be sufficient room in the 54 card deck for 2 Team Cards for each school. If that is the case, and again this is only speculation, it would raise the probability of a player receiving their specific Team Card to 2 out of 54, or 1 out of 27 (or a probability of 3.7%). Again, how would even these Team Cards make a player feel like they were actually coaching the Florida Gators or Nebraska Cornhuskers? Let’s hope the graphics on the Team Disks, if included, do better justice to the schools over what was done for the City Disks in Card Football.
Card Football also includes 30 “Player Chips” where individual player abilities further affect the outcome of plays. There are 10 red player chips, 10 blue player chips, and 10 grey player chips. The ratings of the red players are in the 80s, the ratings of the blue players range from 90 to 92 (except for a RB with a rating of 87 – perhaps a printing error?), and the ratings of the grey players range from 94 to 100. To play Card Football in the “Player Chip mode” each player can draft 9 player chips, 3 from each color set. The offensive players will add yards to a play’s outcome, while defensive players will subtract yards. For example, the WR with a rating of 82 has only 1 card where he can affect the play for an additional 2 yard gain; however, the WR with the rating of 100 has 8 cards where he can affect the outcome, for an average gain of about 4.4 yards.

While these Player Chips can add some personality to a game of Card Football, they do not help differentiate between two teams. So, the Dallas Cowboys or the Denver Broncos could draft the same players for a game against the New York Giants and the only difference would be in using the different Team Disks to be placed in an End Zone.

Now Card Football could have differentiated the teams by pre-selecting the Player Chips for the teams. For example, the Indianapolis Colts could have been composed of the QB with a rating of 100, a WR with a rating of 90, and a RB with a rating of 87; whereas, the Miami Dolphins could have been composed of a QB with a rating of 85, a WR with a rating of 100, etc. This way each team would have its own personality and players would have to utilize their team’s strengths and take advantage of their opponent’s weaknesses.

The chart below compares two cards from Card Football with the same two cards from Hand Off. The two cards used for comparison are the Ace of Diamonds and the Ace of Clubs. For the most part, the potential results of playing these cards is the same in both games, and where there are difference, they are really minor.

Ace of Diamonds Card Football NCAA Hand-Off
Offense 30 yard RB run 30 yard RB run
Red Zone 10 yard RB run 10 yard RB run
Player Chip RB 97+:6 extra yards	Undefined icons
Defense Blitz 7 yard sack/loss. Card Football uses them while Hand Off does not. Or does it?

The chart above indicates that there are some unidentified icons on the Hand Off cards. Assuming they are not just decorations, one has to wonder and speculate that, the images next to the titles of Offense, Defense and Special Teams on the cards have some game meaning and purpose. Is this the way Hand Off will help players differentiate between the college teams? Will this be the way that Nebraska can run the ball better than Florida State, but Florida State will throw the ball better than Nebraska? For example, the lineman in the three-point stance next to the word “Defense” may grant special abilities to some teams and not others. Maybe the player running image next to “Special Teams” may grant other abilities to some teams and not others.

Again, all of the above is speculation. I can only hope that if I want to coach the Oklahoma Sooners I can do so without being just the same team as the Clemson Tigers with a different Team Disk in the End Zone.
I am really looking forward to this game, but some statements in Fabio Del Rio's post have me concerned.

First, what is meant by being in the "final design approval stage"? Does this mean there still has to be additional time for layouts to be prepared, production printing, packaging, etc., to be done?

And, what is the possible extent of the "firm release date"? Are we talking days, months, or years? A date of January 2011, would also be a firm release date.
Hi folks,

We're in the final design approval stage with NCAA Football and the 20 schools. We should have a firm release date in a few weeks. In the meantime, we will be posting images of game components. Hang in there and thanks for the support.

Fabio Del Rio
CSE Games

After listening to Dice Tower about it, I wonder really how well it will do. I thought Race Day would go gang busters from all the NASCAR fans. It could be it wasn't marketed well enought. I hope the use the 1998 Tennessee Vol team. I probably will be suckered into buying it since it has them.
