Thread: Of Imperial Walkers and Grappling Hooks: An Assault on Hoth Solitaire Report

Background

I purchased this game on eBay (probably paying too much for it, but it was a must-have). The game was complete and had apparently never been played.

I love the look of the board that creatively depicts a stark ice-world strewn with rocky outcroppings and Rebel entrenchments. Surrounding the game map are well-done information boxes.

I too, suffered as I connected the little plastic stands to each playing counter. I think the plastic was a bit brittle from many years of non-use. I found that if you use a very sharp knife to pry open the little plastic holders, you could fit the cardboard counter in its slot without damaging it.

I followed my general habit when starting a new game: Punch out the pieces, look at the rules to set up the initial game, then sit back and read the rules through. Having read the rules, it was time to play. Sadly, I had Friday off and most of my working buddies were not available so I decided to try a Solitaire play.

Solitaire Play

Because the timing of movement and fire are determined by random card draw, it is very easy to play in a solitaire format. Just let the cards determine your strategy. For my first game, I decided to employ some rather “safe” strategies.

Rebels Setup and plan: For the rebels, I formed 2 battle lines between the Empire forces and the Shield Generator setting most of the units within the rugged terrain where they enjoy defensive bonuses. I spread the laser turrets out, each one guarding a “kill Zone” or avenue running between obstructed terrain. From this arrangement I figured I could either deploy a “bend-don’t break” strategy as the heavy Empire forces moved up the board. Additionally, if the Empire chose to rush a particular side of the board, the Rebel forces could react accordingly. Luke Skywalker was placed in Land Speeder #3.

Empire Setup and plan: The Empire has fewer choices to make in planning. I filled each walker with light and heavy troopers. The 4 walkers would be entering the field of battle in a proper “British” line so I packed the 2 inside Walkers with troops and left the 2 outside only half full. The plan is one of “Blitzkrieg”. Rush the Rebel fronts and don’t stop until the Shield Generator is down. All troops will remain in the walkers until the first direct encounter with the enemy. Then they will dismount and defend the walkers who will rush forward.

How It Went Down

The first turns were spend figuring out the rules and handling movement. I found that this is a battle that requires both sides to get in close since firing from several zones away is pointless. The Empire forces, AT-STs and walkers tore up the snow toward the first defensive line. The first shooting was from too far away to evoke any real damage.

I decided to have the Empire attempt an end-around to the right side of the map where there was 1 fewer turrets to deal with early on.
After several movement phases the opposing forces crashed into each other. Luckily, the Empire was able to dismount all of the Walker-Enclosed troops without causalities. The rebels in their entrenchments held fast while there were some losses among the light troopers in the Empire’s side.

Speeders to the rescue

The speeders that had held back behind the first Rebel line pounced and moved behind the Imperial Walkers. From there they could deploy their tail hooks but had to wait for their opportunity, taking several hits as they waited. Luke’s speeder was fired at but he used “The Force” to up his armor rating and the shot missed. Finally, a card was drawn that would allow the speeders to deploy their hooks. This destroyed 2 walkers. “Two down….3 remaining”.

The Empire Strikes Back

As the game progressed, I continued to have the Imperial forces deploy the “bums rush” offense. This worked pretty well. The walkers made a steady march down the battlefield while the supporting troops kept the Rebels occupied. Using this tactic, 2 walkers were able to get within decent range of the power grid and knock it out of commission. Then it was on to the Shield Generator.

Hey, Just Like in the Movie!

As the game commenced, the Imperial Walkers left behind the ground troops. 2 walkers were now dangerously close to the shield generators, but followed closely by 4 Land Speeders, one carrying Luke! The walkers fired their first 2 volleys from long range with no effect. It appeared to be only a matter of time.

Grappling Hooks to the Rescue

The 4 remaining speeders went in hot pursuit of the Imperial Walkers. Luke ended up directly behind a Walker when the card for throwing grappling hooks arrived. The 4 speeders were each able to deploy their grappling hooks and down the walkers. A lone light trooper was destroyed after he took a last, improbable shot at the shield generator. Whoo-hoo, the Rebels survive! From there it was just a mop up job to destroy the other walker and few remaining ground troops.

Summary

This game has allot of potential and is well suited to solitaire play. The map and counters are colorful and one can loose themselves in the Star Wars Theme.

Learned Tactics

Rebels need to think out their defensive lines, making them as flexible as possible being careful to know when to retreat a little to keep up with the Empire forces. They should also be very careful to note the useful range of the Imperial Walkers. Don’t let them get too close to the generator. Deploy the speeders and have them attack the flanks of the Walkers like wolves. The Walkers cannot hit them from behind. At all times the speeders should fly adjacent to a space with a Walker so that they are in range when the “Use Harpoons” card is drawn.

The Imperial Forces must take terrain at the cost of manpower. At all times, protect the Walkers and get the walkers to the generator in a hurry. The ground forces should especially work on protecting the flanks of the Imperial Walkers from the Snow Speeders.

I will enjoy refining these strategies as I continue to play this game.

(Edited for spelling and typos only)

Thread: 1st Play Session Reports

I acquired an unpunched game some time ago on ebay. It finally found its way out of the closet and on the game table.

Game 1

"Echo Base! This is Echo Station 3-4. We are being overrun! I say again: Walkers are overrunning our position! Will withdraw to Station 2-4 immediately. Do you copy, Echo Ba...(hssssssssssssssss)."
-Unknown Rebel Trooper

The imperial forces under the command of General Veers' adjunct, Alex, pushed forward after an early bombardment of Rebel Tower positions. The early Snowtrooper excursions were easily wiped out by Rebel Troopers and Rebel Tower fire. The nimble, but vulnerable, AT-STs also fell early.

But, Imperial Walkers drove quickly in three lanes. One headed for the Rebel Power Grid. One sprinted across the center. Two made their way on lanes farthest from the Power Grid.

The Rebel Power Grid was promptly destroyed. But, heavy fire from Rebel Towers (well-placed by Rebel field commanders Scott & Pete) damaged other walkers. Eventually, Commander Skywalker brought down a walker on the far lane through some unreal shooting (the force).

But, the speed of the walkers, and the effectiveness of their armor v. Rebel Snow Speeders proved too great. With one of the walkers breaking free of all enemy units and the Power Grid down, the Shield Generator was destroyed in the nick of time (only 1 shuttle was left on Hoth).

The Imperial forces were victorious.

Game 2

"Look. Those Walkers' blasters are murder. You can't go toe-to-toe with 'em. You gotta outmaneuver 'em -- get in behind. 'Cause if they get a decent shot off, you've had it."
-Colonel Firest, Commanding Echo Base Ground Defenses

The Snowtroopers, under the command of Admiral Veers' adjunct Pete, put a hurting on the Rebel Troopers under the command of Alex and Scott on the ground. A wave of invading Snowtroopers held their own on the ground.

Meanwhile, one Walker advanced on the Power Grid, one advanced down the center, and two other Walkers advanced in Pete's newly patented "train formation" opposite the Power Grid. But, the Snow Speeders advanced fast and furious. The force was with the Rebel Snow Speeder gunners, although not literally, in early combat. The Walker advancing on the Power Grid had its blasters and legs damaged early. It was unable to destroy the grid. The Walker in the center of the battlefield also saw its legs damaged and it was ultimately destroyed.

The walkers in Pete's train formation fared better, despite every attempt by Commander Skywalker. Eventually the formation was broken as the rear Walker was pulled down by harpoons. But the lead walker, despite being damaged and fired upon by all remaining snow speeders, made it to the Power Grid. But, in its weakened state, it failed to destroy the generator before being destroyed by the Rebel envelopment of Snow Speeders. Then, the 5th Rebel Transport was away!

The Rebel forces were victorious!

All in all, both games were fun (although the 2nd game got bogged down at the end w/ countless Rebel misses). I think this will see a little more play from time to time.
I can´t believe that no one, including myself, saw that this was missing from the game entry.
I mean this is a forerunner of the much cherished Battle Cry/Battle Lore etc. games and it´s sibling "Battle for Endor" had the entry, but not "Assault on Hoth".
BGG fixed this real quick, finally the entry of the great game is complete.

As someone who has played the ever-lovin' hell out of this game, the Rebels do have it easier.

To combat this and make it feel more like the film, we would take out one "Transport Away" event card from the deck. Then we would shuffle the event deck and place the fifth "Transport Away card", the one that we kept out of the shuffle, on the very bottom of the event deck. The Empire truly struck back.

I agree, I think the Rebels have it slightly easier. (I didn't think so after I lost my first game as the Rebels, but there you go...) I've played a couple times, and all my Rebel wins were by blowing up all the Imperials, not by drawing cards.

Some of it I think comes with how lucky you get with walker fire early on. If you can bring down one of the walkers in the first couple turns, it makes it easier to concentrate fire.

Thread: First Play Session Report and general thoughts.

So I finally found an opponent/gamer in LA that is willing to game on a regular basis. Sweet.

Today I brought over my copy of Star Wars: Assault on Hoth. I traded for this here on BGG for a copy of Battle Cry. Its in great condition, with the map laminated.

I put all the chits in their little holders, and though my thumb was a bit irritated from it, we started the game. Neither of us had played before, and we just skimmed through the rules as we started. Well written rules, easy to learn and set up.

I decided (didn't know any better) to set up unlike the movie. I had all of my troops waaay down the battle field, really close to the Rebels front line. I placed 4 of 6 turrets behind or among them, and put the last two a little further back.

As the first few turns rolled on, the walkers, full of snowtroopers stomped straight on down the field. A couple swift At-sts ran ahead of the pack taking pot shots, but missing the rebels.

Being that this was my first game, I had no idea really how the mechanics worked (in terms of how easy/hard it is to hit, etc). By the end of the second round, my snow speeders had reached the Empire's assault force, but all my rebel troops had been eliminated! Only one of the Walkers had unloaded its men.

One thing did work to my advantage, however. Since I had no more rebels that far down the field, he didn't see any need to unload any snowtroopers. And since his chickenwalkers had either been destroyed or scouted ahead, this left my speeders free to harass the Walkers for the rest of the game from their rear.

I don't believe I lost any speeders this game. One at-st tried to take out the generator to lower the bases shields, but I had one heavy and one light trooper pop out of a tunnel right before it reached the generator and they brought the enemy down.

Meanwhile, my remaining turrets continued to fail to do any real damage, or just get destroyed altogether. One was crushed under the feet of the mammoth walker!

But my speeders, especially the one piloted by Skywalker, continued to damage and take down Walkers, one by one. One was destroyed with troopers inside. Only one speeder tried to trip a walker with its tow cable but failed.

The deck was being stubborn, and hadn't really given me any troop move cards for awhile, so they built up quite a little rescue party in the base. By the time the remaining last two walkers reached firing range of my base, I got the movement card I needed and formed a wall of heavy troops...which 50% of were immediately squashed by an aggressive walker!

At this time I had only drawn two "Transport away!" cards. I managed to down another Walker, leaving just one walker and very few snowtroopers left.

The empire would have won, but the Walker missed its crucial shot on my base, giving me the chance to have Douche 5, the cross-eyed speeder pilot who failed to do ANYTHING worthy the whole battle, to take a desperate shot at the last walker and destroy it!

We decided to end the game there. Rebels had held off the Empire! Had we kept playing, and had he even drawn more reinforcements, by the time they'd have reached the base again I would have drawn the remaining three "Transport Away!" cards.

First game. My game. I won. I was happy. And i LOVE the game. Its an oldie but goody. Quick and easy to learn/teach. Fun. Quick to play. One of the few great Star Wars games out there.

I am taking the time and money now to turn it into a chromier version, using micromachines and a model kit to make the pieces 3D. I can't wait to play it again!

Thread: Re: New Rebel Player

I just received the game for Christmas, played twice so far. My opponent and I each won with the Empire...the second game the Rebels were absolutely mauling the Empire, but the AT-AT cards fell just right for a desperation shot...and a 1 in 27 odds hit on the generator. But tell that to poor Princess Leia.

I favor the Rebels setting up a defense line back a ways...and rushing the speeders forward. You want to engage the AT-ATs in front at the same time your speeders are getting behind them. Also, you can rush the speeders to the cliffs, wait a bit, then swoop in behind the AT-ATs when they try to go past.

The way I see it:
The AT-ATs are to crush troops and shoot the shield generator.

The speeders are to harpoon cable the AT-ATs from behind.

The Imperial troops and AT-ST are to shoot at the speeders (protect the rear of the AT-AT).

The rebel troops are to shoot the Imperial troops, when the speeders have forced them to exit the AT-ATs.

What are the towers for? You worry about those fighters, I'll worry about the towers.

Actually, I think the towers are best used in a concentrated manner near areas that AT-ATs will be forced to pass...but not too far back, or the AT-ATs will get dangerous shots at the shield.

I think this strategy would have worked in my second game, but for a very lucky Imperial gunner.

Use Luke to spend points on harpoon attempts. If you can spend 5 twice, that's probably the way to go.

Most of the chits are the same size, and clearly take up one hex. The AT-AT's, however, use the same size stand, but are about twice as wide as the other chits.

For game purposes, do these AT-AT's take up two hexes, or are they still considered to be in one hex?

I'm converting my game from chits to Micro Machine AT-Ats and need to know this for movement, since the minis legs/feet take up two hexes.

Thanks!

I would agree, but the symbol dice (opposed to numbered) make it hard to add/subtract modifiers.

Only thing I could think of is if you're shooting at someone in rough terrain and you are not in rough terrain, you should roll one less die, or have to re-roll the first or last kill to give the target a better chance of survival.

It was also the major reason that I put forth THIS "suggestion" as well:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/233478

Check it out and see what develops!

I hate to wax geeky, but I don't remember them in the Battle for Hoth. But, that doesn't mean they weren't there... Am I right, people?!

So everything has a movement of five, IIRC. So they probably should too. I wouldn't permit them to enter the dark blue terrain. Dice would be tricky though. They should get some sort of defensive bonus for being fast and smaller than any other vehicle. I can't imagine that they would be any tougher than either of the infantry though, since the rider would be making the attack (I assume).

There're my two standard credits.

This mainly pertains to those of US that have the means with the "miniatures" of "Tauntauns" from either the 'model kits', or even perhaps having these created as an "add on" with the regular GAME! I'd like to solicit for suggestions on HOW to implement this 'aspect' into the "mix", since it is a neglected feature of which could be corrected now then! I'll be more than glad to publish my OWN version for that, while I'd like have some others bring UP what it is that they'd LIKE to 'see' for this as well. Please keep the commentary "on track" for it all too.

I paid a total of $71 for all the Micro Machines. The AT-STs, Laser Towers and Snowspeeders came from a model kit entitled "Assault on Hoth" or "Battle on Ice Planet Hoth" (it was released by two or three different companies, so the name changed). I bought 3 kits to get all the models needed, and spent about $20 total on them. Adding in another random figure here or there and total cost for figures was about $100. Oh, and I also bought the materials to make the clear stands for the Snowspeeders, so add in another $10, for a total of $110. Pricey, but worth it when you see how cool the game is using the minis instead of the drab cardboard stands.

John
Do you have a hard time getting your speeders adjacent to each other and the walkers? Cause I do, it's a bit of a pain. I might go back and redo mine so all the speeders are at different heights, it might help but then they may be too high. Oh well.

Not really - the snowspeeders from the model kit are smaller than the ones made by Micro Machines, so if you are using the MM ones I could see the problem. Still, I like your idea of putting them at different heights to give more room....

You can get a good supply of minis for this game from Risk - Star Wars: Original Trilogy Edition. If you plan on doing this, I might be willing to go "halfies" with you on the cost of game for half of the figures +1 grey Imperial Trooper (I'm missing one from the game I bought).

Thread: Re: Has anyone used minis for this?

I know I payed $45 for 8 packages of walkers and snow speeders not counting shipping and handling of $8.50. I got 1 package of echo base troops and a package of pilots {which I use to represent heavy weapon units} for a penny each. Sounds nice but the guy wouldn't combine shipping and handling and charged me $18 for what cost him $3 to ship. Yeah! I was pretty steamed, not my fault no one bid on them but me.

That wasn't enough though so I had to buy another pack of echo base troops for $4, don't remember shipping but it was reasonable.

Last I bought a bunch of loose mini's that had all the imperial troops plus more for $15 and $5 shipping and handling.

I still need to come up with 3 AT-ST's but for now I'm using the probe droids that came with the walkers and snowspeeders.

As far as the towers go, I'm not sure where he got them. It looks like they can be made from spools painted white and a toothpick or straw or something for a gun.

So far with shipping and handling I'm close to $100.
