So it sounds like you guys have this covered, but I just figured I would throw in the 'official' responses for completeness.

Duglis wrote:
1. When you take your actions at a location, you can take some actions, then encounter the space, then take more actions again? correct? As long as you encounter that space during your turn.

Correct. You can take your Actions in any order you wish. The only Action that is manditory is to Encounter the Space and that can be done anytime during your Actions phase.

Duglis wrote:

2. When encountering a space such as the Doctor's, can you heal before you draw an event card or must you carry on in the order listed there?

Actually, the Action is 'Encounter the Space' which is to do the game text on the board as listed. 'Draw Event' should be done first, then any optional special abilities of the space.

Duglis wrote:

3. If you have a showdown on a space with a Militia, do you bring only 1 elder to help you (max), or can you bring 2 still?

In the Competitive Game, having Militia with you has no effect on your ability to bring and use up to 2 Town Elders.

Duglis wrote:

4. The Villain will roll 2 dice to target the 2 Elders, right? Is it one die per elder that the villain names first? "This is for Lord X"... "This is for Lady X"... and then rolls them all?

That is correct. You call the targets for your individual Fight Dice first, then roll for each target. Remember that the Villain has no real choice here, it ALWAYS puts 1 Fight Dice on each Town Elder in the Hunting Party.

Duglis wrote:

5. The Hero will roll dice against the evil elders too..does the hero say..these 2 are for "Evil Lord X"....this 1 is for "evil Lady X"...and then rolls them all?

Same as above, but the Hero can choose how many Fight Dice to assign to an Evil Elder (if any).

Duglis wrote:

6. A Dead town-elder will always stay dead if good, correct? Only Dead town-elders accused of being evil during a showdown, can come back as an evil elder, having faked their death?

That is correct (for now ).

Duglis wrote:

7. In a showdown, Can you throw off wound(s) assigned to your hero to a friendly elder?

No.

Duglis wrote:

p.s. any chance we'll see a custom or flying frog monster based on Frankenstein's Monster, soon?

Can't spill any beans just yet.

- Jason

When encountering a space such as the Doctor's, can you heal before you draw an event card or must you carry on in the order listed there?

Mmm in my opinion you have to draw the event card before healing. The action is the 'encounter the space', and encountering it you have to follow what is written in the right order in my opinion (drawing the card and healing are only one action for what I understand). Maybe I'm wrong.
1. Correct.
2. You can heal before you draw a card, as you can perform actions in any order.
3. In competitive you can bring two elders plus militia, in co-op only one elder OR one militia per player (max of two elders per showdown still).
4. Correct.
5. Correct.
6. Correct.
7. No.

PS. Almost certainly.

Lest ye want to become a monster, ye must stop staring into the abyss, and shove your best friend down there instead...

1. Ay, that is right. I believe it says on the refence cards: Move, Fight and Make actions. Actions can be made in any order ye wish!

2. We have played it using the rule that says Do exactly what it says. If it says "Draw an event. Heal 1 wound for 1 investigation each." then you draw an event first, and then heal, following the order it says on the board or on the card.

3. Ye can bring all the elders ye want (that is max 2).

4 and 5. I am not sure that I fully understand yer question, but here goes nonetheless... The Villain uses one of his combat dice for each Town Elder. Then he says "This die represent my foul breath of evilness that will choke Lady Hanbrook! Hahaha!" and "This is me claws ripping The doctor apart, so his blood will flow forever..." Then rolls the dice (all of them). It says in the rulebook that he must use one of the dice for each elder, not one miss or wound. If the Vampire has 7 dice, he will use 1 for the Lady, 1 for the Doctor and 5 for the Hero!

The same way around with the Hero, except(!) the hero can choose not to use any of his or her dice against the evil elders. If however the villain is about to take its last wound one of the evil elders jumps in fornt of it and takes it instead. You cannot kill the main villain before the Evil Elders are dead. Dramatic, yet foolish!

6. Ay, dead is dead for the gooddoers. As an old man once told me: A Hero dies once! An evil Elder dies a thousand times... and a wise man keeps himself alive.

7. No. But you can play "Escape", or "Its a mere scratch" and such....

Cheerio,
A

Thread: Re: Town Elder Token Pacement

When I first tried this variant, I placed the Town Elder tokens face down. However, there are a few Secret and other cards that need to interact a specific Town Elder and it made more sense to have them placed face up.

I've now played five competitive games with the Tokens placed face up and this is now much harder to reveal secrets than the original game.

Players usually only get to see 2 or 3 character's secrets when they are required to move on to the actual Town Elder Token space. With the original competitive rules we were aware of nearly everyone's Pure or Evil status.

So for the competitive game I think it's hard enough just getting to right location before revealing the secret.

However, I think your suggestion about making it even harder by performing a die test, would work well for the co-operative game where everyone shares in the knowledge (most times).

I've got to say that of all the house rules that I've tried the Town Elder Token placement works really well and I wouldn't want to play without it now.

We did this at our last game, though we turned it upside down, so you didn't know who you were coming up on.

We were playing Cooperative, so once a secret was looked at, we just took them off of the board.

I think next time I will have them move when the Shadow Track scross a line.

Also, I think that if a Hero wishes to learn a secret, and goes to a Elder, they will have to pay the needed Investigation and have to roll a d6. On a 1-2, they have to roll the minion chart, saving the Elder from the Evil.

An option might be... Failure to rescue them means the Elder stays there for 1 complete turn with that threat. If another hero doesn't come and save them, they die. ANd all that that entails.

Thanks for theses informations Jeffrey.
I think that i will finally buy the supplement, after reading your comments ;
I've finally carefully cutted the LNOE cards ; It's not perfect, but at least make them easier to shuffle ; But it's still annoying to have expansions that doesn't fit the original game.
My fear his now that the next big expansions ( as Growing Hunger ) would have all new cards like this... This would be a real nightmare then.

Enjoye your games
Thread: Re: The Madness Supplement now available!

Got the supplement over the weekend and they are, as feared, the slightest bit off in length when compared to the master set. No difference in quality but it seems like the machine that cuts the card stock is just the slightest bit off - like the recent LNoE supplement. The difference doesn't seem to stick out like a sore thumb, in the corner locations, as I had feared. I think you would really have to be looking for or feeling for the difference to see/feel it. I think the LNoE supplement cards stuck out so much more because you have like 5 cards interspersed with a deck of 100 and you can just look at the stack to tell where the new cards are. Anyway, the madness cards really add a cool twist on the game, making you use the location cards instead dice for movement until you're either knocked out or the shadowtrack moves between stages - then it can be thrown onto another hero. The new rope card along with the tools of science or runic amulet make for a great "second chance" when encountering your foe during the showdown too. All in all it's still a good supplement for the game!
Can she use her manipulation ability during the mystery phase if she is attacked? Her card states "This ability may be used any numer of times in a turn". The mystery phase is a distinct part of a game round as are hero turns. If she has taken her hero turn would her ability apply? I played a solo coop game where she couldn't use her ability if attacked in the mystery phase. She is no great shakes when being chased by a Barghest Hound!

How is this card used in cooperative play. If you investigate, the card is revealed. If revealed, you use it "to prevent all Wounds you would take from a single source." When used, the Elder is automatically killed. Could the Elder with this revealed secret ever be taken to a Showdown? Right now, I'm playing it that the elder with the revealed card can go to the Showdown and use the ability sometime during the showdown, if needed. Is this correct?

Thread: Solo game session report: Anne-Marie's Diary

Disclaimer: Unfortunately, during this session I have made a mistake in-game. I have allowed Anne Marie to use the Musket, which she can't, due to her 'Lightweight' Ability. I have found that I'm making this mistake only in middle-game and have decided not to start over again. Hopefully, you will enjoy this report anyway.
During the game, Lin, my girlfriend, helped me with drawing cards, keeping the gaming space tidy and keeping track of the Mystery deck and 'Remains in Play' cards.

“Upon the death of my dear grandmother, Anne Marie, 2 years ago, I have found in her belongings a peculiar diary. It describes in detail the happenings of a dark November of the year 1809 in a small village of Shadowbrook. Only after carefully studying it, and finding the village (nowadays only little more than a plain with wild-growing trees and bushes) my grandmother had written of, I have decided to share this story with the world. It is now the year 1865, and we are entering a new age of reason – it will not be strange to me then, that some of the readers won't believe Anne Marie's writings. It is for you to decide, if these are facts, or merely delusions of a demented mind, but I can assure you, that my grandmother was an intelligent, and healthy person – and the latter is very unlikely.

28th May, 1809
I have arrived in Shadowbrook only today. What a strange name for a village this charming! This place is so romantic – the mysterious woods, the old ruins of a keep, and a beautiful windmill not far from the village itself! If it wasn't for the fact, that I can only be here, because of the disappearance of the former teacher (Elizabeth, I believe she was called), I would be overwhelmed with joy; but my character only allows me to rejoice this much – I must always remember Elizabeth and pray for her soul, wherever she may be.

*What follows, are rather insignificant observations about the local pupils (as you may have already noticed, my grandmother had taken on herself the burden of teaching the children of Shadowbrook) and the townsfolk. The first important entry is that from the 6th of November.

6th November
Today I had a very enjoyable time taking a walk around Shadowbrook. By the covered bridge I have met Lord and Lady Hanbrook, and received a formal invitation to a party, which was to take place in some days in the Manor. I had to get back to my house shortly after, though – it was getting colder and colder.

7th November
The weather was better than yesterday, so I took a walk again, this time reaching the Olde Woods. It was then, in the evening, that I have been attacked by a strange creature! I managed to fight it off, but it scratched me with it's long claws. I could've sworn it had very fair skin and pointy teeth. I do not know, what it is, but I know I will not have much sleep tonight. Even now I am shaking when only the faintest wind blows...

8th November
Not one moment's sleep last night. I am very tired.
In the morning I went to Church to pray. I have met the Magistrate there, and I have spoken to him about my experience in the Woods. He let me have his mandate, thinking it was a drifter that attacked me. A good man, he is. But I know that it wasn't a man, who assaulted me...

9th November
By God! This is terrible! There has been a murder in the Manor! One of the servants has been found dead, almost torn apart! I keep thinking that it could have been me... I have the feeling it was the same being that I met two nights ago, though the servants speak of a screaming woman they saw right after the last cry for help of the murdered man...
I have visited Doctor Manning to talk to him about my fears. He is a kind man. We shared some gossip and rumours, and he admitted that he feels strongly about me, and that he would do anything to defend me... I do not know what to think of this.
In the evening, when I was leaving the Doctor's Office, a chilling wind was blowing, freezing to the bone. Even though I have a warm blanket covering me, I still shiver. It seems that winter is coming early this year.

10th November
My walks do not bring me peace anymore. Today was the last day I took a stroll outside of town. The chilling wind hasn't stopped, and I couldn't stand the cold for long. I managed to visit the abandoned keep, though, and to my surprise, I found a musket! I am not very skilled with this weapon, but it does help me feel more secure...

11th November
While in church, I have heard a man's voice crying for help. I ran out, only to find that he was being chased towards the town by a howling woman! I have shot her with the musket, but even though the round pierced her heart, she kept running – and wanted to strike me! I had to pierce her again and again with the bayonet, until she dropped dead before me. The worst was yet to come, though. The townsfolk have recognised her as Elizabeth! I am terrified. What devilry is taking place here?

12th November
Grievous news. Lady Hanbrook is dead, killed in her sleep, brutally murdered. I have come to the manor to give my condolences to Lord Hanbrook, and overheard two servants whispering about some rumors about Reverend Harding. It seems that he is a war criminal, how awful...
Lord Hanbrook approached me and said that he is willing to go through hell and back to find the murderer and avenge his wife's death. He promised that if I were to do anything regarding this mysterious killing, I was to contact him, and he would be of any and all help. I do not know what to do. I am afraid to go to sleep, but I am too tired not to...
The Reverend wanted to talk to me in the evening, but I have told him about what I know of his past, and didn't allow him to enter my house. It's enough that he keeps his sinful life to himself.

13th November
The reverend is dead. By God, how can I not blame myself? If I have allowed him to stay in my house, it wouldn't have happened... Lord Hanbrook said he would have to look into this murder before he can help me with the investigation... 'Investigation', that's what he said! I do not think I have a choice now, other than try to understand the villain and his motifs...
I have been to church, to pray for the good reverend's soul, and that of Lady Hanbrook and the other murdered people. I have cleansed myself by admitting my sins before one of the reverend's assistants and thus, before God Almighty. I may be able to sleep tonight, though I still feel guilty...

14th November
I wanted to speak to the magistrate, and found that a strange creature was trying to break down his door! It was not a man, but a dead, walking corpse! I have managed to kill the un-dead, and the magistrate was very thankful. Still, the stench of that dead body brought to life haunts me...

15th November
My God, madness has made it's home in Shadowbrook! Lord Hanbrook was accusing everyone of the responsibility for the death of his wife, and the other deaths, too. I have managed to talk some sense into him, but only just! If not for my influence, someone may have been killed... he was ready to fire his weapon... I decided to go to the blacksmith and ask for his advice. He could only give me two books that were in his family for a while now. From one of them I have learned, that the locals believe in creatures called Vampires... the doing of these would be similar to what I have experienced in the last days – the walking dead, shrieking women, his appearance when he attacked me in the woods, more than a week ago... My God, this nightmare has been going on too long. I have to do something...
I have spent long hours of the night studying the book of the town's history. I also managed to talk to the magistrate and to Sophie, the Midwife. Magistrate Kroft was very afraid to speak too me, saying he knows very much, but is worried that it could bring him to his death... and the young lady was very drunk when I spoke to her. From what the innkeeper says, this is not the first time she has had too much to drink...

*There is a two day gap in the diary now, which is quite explainable:

17th November
I have spent the last day recovering from my wounds in the town hall. Doctor Manning was taking care of me himself. The miller told me, that he has found me lying next to a decaying body near the Windmill. Indeed, I have fought an un-dead creature there, but I though it overwhelmed me... I was very lucky. I have lost the book of village history though. A shame. I hope I will find it somewhere near the windmill...
There was another murder, too. The blacksmith's helper has been killed, in the same way the other men were slaughtered. I suspect another succubus (it is how the shrieking women are called in the Book of Lore).

18th November
I looked into the murder today, and was attacked by a succubus, just as I expected. I was ready and I have killed the creature before it could wound me. The blacksmith has handed me the lost book, saying that it was found by the local coachman. I will visit him in the windmill tomorrow, I hope.

19th November
I have visited the windmill and met with the coachman. It seems that he was the one that found me, and brought me to the village. I told him how thankful I was and asked about the un-dead body I have defeated.
Upon my return to the town I have heard some outrageous rumours spread by Sophie. The nerve of that girl! Not only does she spend her evenings with a full mug of ale, she also speaks wrongly about poor Lady Hanbrook...

20th November
It has been two weeks now the horror reigns in this town. And it has claimed another victim – Doctor Manning is dead, killed in his office. I have attended his burial ceremony, and I prayed for his soul. How many more must die before we find the villain and put a rest to his darkness?
A man at the blacksmith's wanted to challenge me to a duel. Me, a woman, dueling? I do not know what came over that man, but I talked him out of it and tried to ask him about the Vampire. He didn't tell me much, but he said that one of the townspeople told him about what he has seen one late night in the abandoned keep... A tall, pale figure, wandering the ramparts of the old stronghold. Can in be where the creature is hiding?
I have bought a padded jacket at the blacksmith. I may save my life, if it comes to a confrontation...

21th November
The people are becoming aggressive. I have been assaulted with a knife today by an angry woman who thought that I was the reason for the evil! Outrageous! I had to visit the doctor's office and try to bandage my wound... Oh, it is so hard to stay here, knowing that a man who truly cared for me once worked here, and now lies dead...

22nd November
During my sleep in the Doctor's Office another person has been murdered – the same women who struck me yesterday! Though the people whisper, neither the Magistrate nor Lord Hanbrook believe in my guilt. They are good people, and I am thankful to God that this is the case... I have spoken to both of them, and they are ready to aid me if I decide to look for the villain in the keep.

23rd November
I am very tired. I have been preparing the whole day. We will try to attack the vampire in his lair tomorrow. If this is the last entry someone finds in this diary, it means that I have failed, and have joined the three elders of Shadowbrook...

24th November
God has granted us victory over the monster! I have killed it, and the village is safe... But I cannot speak of the monstrosities I beheld in the keep... I have to sleep, if the nightmarish vision of that fight lets me...

27th November
Now that I have had my rest, I can finally write about the happenings of that night.
I have arrived with Magistrate Kroft and Lord Hanbrook at the abandoned keep near midnight. We entered the ruins, ready for anything – but what the monster prepared for us was well beyond our imagination.
There he stood, in one of the ruined chambers, with his retinue of servants – and well known to us were their faces! We have seen Lady Hanbrook, kneeling by the vampire feet; Reverend Harding was standing with an torch by his side, the flames covering his pale visage with weak light; and doctor Manning – the same who vowed to keep me from harm, was the first to attack us. They were possessed, but what's more – they were dead. We knew, we have buried them...
The doctor, with madness and death in his eyes struck the shocked Lord Hanbrook. Magistrate Kroft was also fast, and he managed to strike down Reverend Harding, before he could even make a move. I have shot the Vampire, aiming for the heart, and I believe I was successful. It is hard to say, however, the truth being he managed to wound me with his claws. Only my strong will prevented me from falling down, though the pain was unbearable. I hit the demon with the bayonet, but he has hit me back, even stronger than before. I only caught a glimpse of Lord Hanbrook, cutting the poor doctor Manning almost in half... What strength this man possesses! Magistrate Croft had to run after he was nearly wounded by the enraged Lady Hanbrook, but Lord Hanbrook's help was enough. After I pierced the vampires heart with the musket's bayonet, and he scratched me with his last strength, I saw how Lord Hanbrook cut of his beloved wife's head with a single blow. He fell to his knees, and seeing the fight was over, started sobbing. I fell too, and nearly lost my senses, but a party of villagers came to the ruins and found us.
I am now called a hero, but I am nothing of the sort. I do not believe I can be afraid of anything now, that I have withstood the horror of the vampire haunting Shadowbrook. Or, quite the contrary, I will be afraid of anything now. I cannot say.
These events were too much. It is time for me to leave the village. As soon as my wounds will heal, I shall ask the coachman to take me to the nearest big city. From there, I will maybe head north... or maybe west. I do not know where I will go, but I know that I have to leave the people of Shadowbrook behind...”

Thank you for reading, sorry for any mistakes I could have made. I hope you enjoyed it!

I'm not sure what one source means in general.

Yes you could. a single 'Source' just means one card or game event that is going to move the Shadow Track - such as a Town Elder being killed or a card that says, "Move the Shadow Track 1 step closer to Darkness."

The reason it is listed a a single 'Source' is that sometimes there will be a chain of things that move the Shadow Track. For instance, you might get the card 'Agents of Evil' which rolls on the Villain's Minion Chart and move the Shadow Track 1 step. If the roll on the Minion Chart also calls for the Shadow Track to move, this would be considered two 'Sources' (one for the 'Agents of Evil' card and one for the Minion Chart result).

- Jason

But I have to place the Villain marker there? And if yes, does it will stay in play and for how long?

The villain isn't placed on the board so it's just a single fight round with one hero. I'd say for the Horseman though that he would fight all heroes in the space as part of his Relentless Charge (fighting as he rides to Town Hall).

RaistlinMajere wrote:
And in the case of the 'These Roads aren't Safe!' card, the Villain will never attack, because of the 'empty space' choice.
Thread: Re: Anyone make any really nice custom monsters yet?

Monkey Prime wrote:
One of the elders could be the creator. That or as alternative lose condition the monster kills is trying to kill his creator a la Mary Shelly so whenenver the darkness chart enters a new phase each elder has a number 1-6 and when that is rolled they are killed and added as an undead elder to the monster's army. The creator could be decided by placing all the elder counters and choosing one at random. When you go for your showdown you can pay an extra 4 or 5 Investigation and reveal the creator. If the creator is dead the monster gets a uber bonus, if he is alive the heroes get a bonus. It comes down to whether its worth the risk!

None of the elders really fit the theme of a mad scientist, though. Better to keep the creator as a separate entry, which also allows you a possible Minion chart entry and works better with the existing mechanics of the game:

Tthere are already mechanisms in play for the villain to kill town elders so I'm not sure more of those are necessary, not to mention that if every Elder the villain kills gets added as an evil elder you're minimizing the effects of the Secrets cards as any elder is reasonably likely to join the villain regardless of what their secret card shows. Given how much of the game revolves around those secret cards I'm not sure that's the best way to handle it.

On a more positive note, I do like the idea of the Monster trying to hunt down his creator. The back story is that the creator is on the run from the creature and is in hiding in Shadowbrook.

Having the creator come up as a Minion roll allows you to handle the Monster's attacks on him then. There are two decent ways to handle this:

First:

Select a random hero. The Creator appears in the same space as that hero. The hero makes a Spirit/Cunning test at 5+.

If successful the Scientist confides in the Hero. Gain 4 investigation. The Scientist's token moves along with the Hero. The Hero may add the Scientist's skills to his/her own for any test. Every turn (including this one) the Hero rolls a d6. On the roll of 6+ the Monster attacks! Every time this roll fails, add a Hunted token to the Creator. For every Hunted token on the Creator add +1 to this die roll.

This is the one I kind of prefer. The other way to do it would be to have the Scientist be a more standard Minion and attack as well, though instead of being killed he'd be "driven off".

Either way, only the Monster can kill the Scientist and when he does he should get some kind of bonus, as well as some movement on the Shadow Track.
