Thread: Re: What all ships are involved??

West End Games made a Star Wars Role Playing game around the same time they made Star Warriors. I'm pretty sure that RPG's are beyond the scope of BoardGameGeek so they are probably not listed.

Basically there are supplements for the Role Playing game that include ships that can be used with Star Warriors. Unfortunately, I don't remember what ships there were. I think there was a variant of the B-wing.

There is no game listed that is actually called "Star Wars RPG".

Could you please clarify which game you are describing ?

Thank you.

I created a set of ID markers for those gamers who have chosen to use Starship Battles miniatures rather than counters for their Star Wars fighter/fleet games. You can download a PDF from the files section of the Star Wars: Silent Death Starfighter Combat Game page.

I cannot express how upset I am that I let this game get out of my collection. I absolutely loved playing it, but had a hard time getting others to try it. May have been my fault for trying to generate interest in it right when Magic:CCG was hitting big. My shame knows no bounds....

Stats are included in the game for the following:
TIE Interceptor
Tie Interceptor prototype (Vader's TIE Fighter)
TIE Fighter
TIE Bomber
Imperial Shuttle
X-Wing
1-seat Y-Wing
2-seat Y-Wing
A-Wing
B-Wing
Stock Freighter
Millennium Falcon
Slave I
Pinnace
Star Destroyers (sort of-rules cover them, but they are not "played" in the classical sense)

The game also includes provisions for using it with WEG's SWRPG so other ships can be imported.

I was just curious about what are all the various fighters used in this game? I've read that gameplay only involves X, Y, B, and A-Wings, and both Tie Fighters and Tie Interceptors. But is that all? Are there any rules for Vader's personal Tie fighter or for the Millennium Falcon or Slave I? What about Imperial Shuttles or Tie Bombers?

I know this report is a bit dated but:
How long did it take to play your scenario?
Did it take a while to explain the rules?
Have you played it much since?
Thanks

As I recall the game took less than an hour to complete. Rules explanation wasn't especially difficult, but my opponent was an experienced gamer and I had the benefit of doing a solo run-through before we sat down to play. The game is pretty procedural -- it isn't difficult to teach the game in the order of the decisions the player must make each move, leaving out some of the details until the third or fourth move, when the basics have been fully absorbed.

Unfortunately, the game hasn't hit the table since I wrote this report. As is the case with many wargames, Star Warriors has a sharp (but in this case, short) learning curve, and it feels like you have to pay the learning price all over again when returning to the game after a break of several weeks. We found it easier to shake something else out of the box the next time we played, but I would like to get back to this one.

I also flushed a lot of effort into painting up miniatures for this game, but they didn't turn out so well; I think that may have contributed to discouraging me from playing again the several times that would be required to really lock in this game.

OK, I just bought a used copy of this game, still haven't received it yet, however, I'm wondering how many counters of each type does the game has. I've seen a couple of pictures where the counters have been replaced by the Star Wars miniature ships sold by WOtC. I would like to do the same, but I need to know how many I need!

Thread: Star Warriors Rules Book

Ack. Playing the latest round of "Goodwill Roulette", I scored a copy of this West End Games favorite from years gone by only to find out that the game was incomplete. I got most of the counters, got the charts, even a couple of unmarked ship control sheets. But no dice and no rules booklet. Dice, I got plenty of. Rules, not so much. If anybody out there has a copy that they could scan and email, it would be much appreciated. I could even be persuaded to send out some as a reward.

Greetings aces

I've just got hands on a complete scan of the rulebook plus control sheets, counters and even the map. The whole PDF is 17MB which is just to big to upload to BGG. Reducing the quality will make the text unreadable.

So if anyone has some webspace to share to make this great game available for everyone mail me. Optionally I could split the PDF into several ZIP files (like 5MB). Please advice.

Kirin out

Greetings aces

I just missed an ebay auction of "Star Warriors" by 20 seconds (while playing Combat Commander, grrrr). Well, I am also in desperate need of the official rules. I am planning to make a homemade version with the Starship Battles minis. Therefore I would like to get hands on the ship diagrams as well. I cannot access the ones in the file section because I do not have MS Publisher. Does anyone has the rules scanned by now - and perhaps also the control diagrams. Or maybe someone could change the MS Publisher file into somethin more accesible like PDF.

Please help me turning some rebel scum into debris spitting balls of fire...

Kirin out

I feel your pain. Recently, I was scouring through the rulebook for specific rules on Swivel Guns and found nothing!

It appears that Swivel Guns only fire at targets in the Forward Center Arc, just like Fixed Guns. The only difference between them is that Swivel Guns are easier to hit with. Take a look at the Gunnery Values Chart (3.52). Swivel Guns always have lower "to hit" numbers than Fixed Guns.

Thread: underappreciated gem of a game

Played a quick game of West End’s “Star Warriors,” to determine if the game is worth the investment of collecting miniatures to replace the outdated components (no matter how well the game may play, I know it isn’t going to get any serious traction with my group with this map and especially these counters, which are of decidedly inferior quality, even for a late 80s-era wargame). Fortunately, the game shined despite it’s poor counters – this appears to be a real gem, and definitely worth an investment in little ships to get it on the table with a large group.

My test scenario matched an X-wing with a trainee pilot versus a Tie Interceptor with a poor pilot. Going by the victory points in the book, this should make for a balanced match-up, but the system allows for a wide variance in pilot abilities even within the proscribed categories of “trainee” and “poor.” The Imperial rolled well on the pilot table and wound up with a significant edge in skill – 4D vs. 2D+1 in piloting, and 5D+1 vs. 3D+1 in gunnery. The piloting edge was to prove decisive in the quick clash to follow … but on paper, it looked like an interesting match going in, with the weaker pilot in the X-wing, hoping his harder-hitting QMF guns and dual deflector shields would help him overcome a superior pilot in the more lightly-armed Tie.

The Empire won the initiative on the first turn (something that never varied throughout the game), and selected his Rebel opponent to move first. The Rebel tried to slip toward his target while angling his deflectors – unfortunately, even this elementary bit of flying was beyond the pilot’s capacity (blew his piloting roll), and the X-wing went into a forced roll. The Tie pilot throttled up, banked toward the Rebel, and closed range with his hapless trainee target.

Rolling to match his target, the Imperial accelerated and zipped right up to minimum range, using pinpoint fire from the X-wing’s forward left arc. The steep angle of deflection made for a tricky shot even at this minimum range, but the gunnery roll was a hit. The X-wing was rocked, suffering gun, body, and stabilizer damage (and it would have been worse if both shields hadn’t been angled forward). The Rebel then sped away, continuing to roll and jink for all the good it did him, and was in no position to return fire … had he elected to snap fire he could have gone for a passing shot, but instead he found himself with no target in his forward arc, and in a damaged ship positioned for a turning contest with a faster, more nimble Tie opponent. Not good.

The Tie overturned to follow, and again used pinpoint fire, this time from a range of three hexes, but directly at the X-wing’s unshielded rear. Mad jinking by the Rebel prevented the shots from striking home, but with his stabilizer knocked out the X-wing pilot was afraid to attempt a second action, and could manage nothing better than to pull away and turn to at least get the Imperial out of his rear arc (thus preventing him from being tailed the next turn).

On the fourth and final turn, the Imperial again won the initiative. Closing to one hex range, he let loose with pinpoint fire, easily hitting his fleeing prey. The damage roll was eleven, plus three for gun power at this range. With no shields angled aft to soak the damage, the total result was fourteen, which resulted in the explosive vaporization of the Rebel, before he could attempt the half-loop he’d planned to reverse course and bring the Imperial under his guns at last. The Force was not with the Rebel Alliance this day.

In all, Star Warriors proved a quick and flavorful game, with plenty of meaningful decision-making and cinematic moments. A real winner of a design, and definitely worth further play. I can see how this game will offer some wild dogfights with more ships (and with better quality pilots).
Thread: Help!! Missing Map, need description.

Hello,

I just won and received a copy of this game from ebay. It is missing the map. As I know that I can use any map (it is only a space map), I do need some description on the map so I can make one or use the correct one.

So what is the dimension in hex on the map? e.g. how many hex wide and long. Numbering system? How the hex is numbered. From the box bottom picture and various photos, is it true that the numbering system is from left to right and top to bottom? e.g. hex number 1711 is the 17 column from the left and the 11 hex down from the top?

Now the last question, the arrows printed on the map. Please give me the hex number that each arrow is on.

Many thanks.

--- Kenneth ---

Thread: User Review

Star Warriors is a game of starfighter combat in the Star Wars universe.

Although it is a stand alone game it can be used alongside West End Games's Star Wars RPG.

The map sheet represents an area of space which has a standard hex grid imposed upon it. Each counter represents one starfighter and there are plenty to depict a large variety of starfighters from the movies.

The system itself works well, although it can be a bit cumbersome. Up to three fighters are recorded on one record sheet, the size of an A4 piece of paper. This records all aspects of the game: current speed, weapons, damage, pilot skills and manoeuvre modifiers. At the start of each move, both players plot in secret which manoeuvres they want their pilots to attempt that turn. Once this is done, players make skill rolls for the pilots to see how well they do. The skill roll is pretty much the same as in the RPG, with piloting and gunnery skills being represented by a number of D6s. This number of dice are rolled to try and beat the combined manoeuvre difficulty of what the pilot is trying to do. Each manoeuvre has its own rating and these vary according to the ship type. Should the pilot pass, all is well, otherwise another roll (or rolls) is made to determine exactly what went wrong. Usually this results in either an action being lost or added difficulty to next turn's manoeuvres.

The system takes a little getting used to but soon becomes second nature. I would, however, recommend imposing a time limit on how long the players can plan for. This makes the game more exciting and reduces the length of waiting between moves.

Shooting is resolved in a similar way, with piloting roles being made against difficulties based upon weapon types and ranges. Damage varies a great deal. Shields can be knocked out, stabilisers damaged, pilots wounded and bodywork points lost. But a good shot always has a chance of instantly destroying a ship....

Some may say the rules are too detailed for what should be a fast game reflecting the space battles of the original Star Wars Trilogy. In some ways this might be true, but the games I have played have had just the right amount of detail so that the ships feel the way they should and there are enough player choices to make it feel like a proper 'simulation'. The differences between flying a B-Wing and a TIE-Fighter are huge, and well represented in the game.

There are lots of additional rules for gunners, asteroids, the Force and even Star Destroyers (although these are handled quite abstractly). All in all there is plenty there for players to get their teeth into. The same could not be said if the game had been lighter in rules. And the rules are very easy to understand if you just follow them through a step at a time.

The only time I have noticed the game 'slow down' has been when I was left with just a couple of damaged ships and found their pilots had an incredibly hard time trying to get them to even turn well! But when I reached this point I knew I had lost...

The only real point that players should remember is that each side should only consist of a few ships. Think of this as more of a starfighter 'skirmish' game than one of massed space battles.

Personally I can't think of a better simulation. And flying the Falcon against Slave I in an asteroid field is great fun!
