Thus, if you choose to sleeve them, they will fit into the common size used for many CCGs.

Dale

I have just finished the final proofs, and the card size will not be quite the same as RftG. The final size of the cards will be 91x59mm. I think that this is similar to the cards in Agricola, but I am not certain on this.

Dale

Maybe this seems like a minor detail, but it's a deal breaker for me. What is wrong with printing these as a standard size?

Edit: The german Agricola cards were 91x59. I'm not sure about the English. This is 2mm more height and 5mm less width than a poker card. UltraPro sleeves are out, because they run short on height. KMC sleeves should work, although barely on the height. The shuffling will be sloppy, because of the missing width.

English Agricola cards are also 91x59. In KMC sleeves, the top of the card is almost peeking out of the top of the sleeve, and there's as much left-right slop as I suspected.

The short version is that this is annoying. Dominion just went from a definite sight unseen purchase to a big unknown.

Mathematically, with 25 types and 10 choices for each game, the possible combinations are: 3,268,760. That is a lot of variation! As far as I can tell, the random shuffling simply adds some risk to the choices a player makes during the game.

The formula used, where n = 25 and k = 10: C(n,k) = n!/k!(n-k)!

Since I'm a terrible shuffler, I'm considering purchasing a bunch of letter tiles from a craft store and then use them to represent the card types. Instead of purchasing and taking a card, you purchase a representative tile and add it to your bag. Shake the bag and draw 5 tiles. Place them behind a screen for private viewing. When it's your turn, place the tiles on your representative cards in front of you. Then perform your actions and buys as usual.

Thanks.

No. The game was always meant to have more Kingdom cards than you need for a game. While the game plays really well with any given set of 10 Kingdom cards -- for me, the game shines when you see how much the game changes with the substitution of as few as 1 or 2 Kingdom cards to a set.

Dominion is a game that I can play over and over again because it constantly feels different. We might play with a set for one or two games and then change a few cards. This causes me to re-assess the cards on the table and their possible interactions, and oftentimes, these changes cause me to approach the game differently as a result.

Dale
Thread: Re: 32 Cards?

It's "worse" than that. At the start of each of your turns, you have exactly 5 cards in your hand and NONE in play. You must use the cards you have in order to take actions (draw cards, additional actions/buys, additional money, etc) and buy more cards from the table (which immediately go into your discard pile). It all sounds so limited, but it doesn't feel that way at all when you play. And I've played a lot of MtG.

Yes, it's still fun! I've played dozens of games and I still enjoy teaching games with just the basic 10 action cards. Because of the different ways in which the cards interact, you usually end up wanting to try the same sets of action cards a few times to experiment with various card combos.

Thread: 32 Cards?

I read the rules for Dominion, and if I understand correctly there are only 32 different cards: 25 actions, 3 money, 3 vp cards, and the curse cards. All the cards in each stack are identical, right? So, since you only use 10 types of actions cards, each game only has 17 unique cards in it. That doesn't sound like a lot of variety... at least not compared to a CCG or other games like Race for the Galaxy.

So, my question is: is this still fun? I understand that choosing 10 decks from 25 gives a lot of variety and replayability between games, but does each individual game hold one's interest with only 17 cards in the mix?

Please let me know if I'm missing something, and thanks for your feedback.

I agree with Michael, I enjoy San Juan much more than RftG. I've played RftG twice and got trounced the first time while not understanding why I lost so bad AT ALL...the second game was better and not so confusing, but I still wasn't having FUN. The theme is cool and the artwork is spectacular, but San Juan is simpler, faster, smaller, and (at least IMO) funner.

As for Dominion, it was great the first time and because there are so many different card stacks that come with the game, each game will be drastically different from the next.

Thread: Re: Direct Comparison to Race for the Galaxy?

1) Well, they're both card games. Honestly I don't see much similarity between the two games mechanically, except in that players purchase improvements for themselves using the limited resources available to them.

2) To use a CCG term, RFTG contains "permanents," or cards you play onto a tableau that grant some sort of ongoing power, while Dominion has no permanents. Players redraw a new "hand" every turn, spend all they can, and repeat. RFTG is played from a public deck of ~100 cards - both players draw from the same deck. Dominion is played by drawing cards from individual player decks, which grow and shrink during the game as players purchase cards to add to their decks and use the powers of the cards they have previously added. Expect a lot of reshuffling; sleeves are practically a requirement for Dominion.

3) At first Race will seem more difficult due to the much larger variety of cards to learn. Once card functions are learned, each game will tax the brain in different ways. To play Race at expert level (which personally I don't think I reach very often) requires multilevel thinking - how well can I "read" the other players to predict which actions they will select? And, aware that I am trying to read them, will they then diverge from "optimal" play because I am likely to have a devastating counter?

Dominion, on the other hand, contains relatively little of that but requires a fine grasp of probability, as every turn one is making small changes to her deck, which eventually add up to greater efficiencies. Deckbuilding from CCGs, but with the need to improvise given a limited time, as the game gets stale when players overthink so there is a peer pressure not to do so.

4) Both games are excellent with 2 players. In my opinion Race is best as a 2-player game, while Dominion is also very good, but no better than it is with 3 or 4.

There is a RFTG game that was played via a BGG geeklist; check out the RFTG strategy forum, as I've linked to it there. That might give you a hint of Race gameplay. As for Dominion, I guess the best advice is to stay tuned. Also read the rules which have recently been posted to this forum.

My guess is that once it's released, Dominion will be my preference between the two, but they're both excellent, and both have appeal for the M:TG player. The combos are more spectacular in Race, but the on-the-fly deckbuilding in Dominion will appeal to those whose favorite part of Magic is before the game starts.

Edited for some minor grammatical corrections.

I am pretty interested in getting a good two player, card based, resource managment game for my wife and I to play (she's a big Settlers and Magic fan so the genre is a slam dunk to get played). I was planning to get into Race for the Galaxy but now that I've read a bit about this I feel like I should get more info before making a purchase (since both games look really good)

Its highly unlikely I'll get a chance to play either before I end up purchasing something, so I really appreciate any responses. If someone who has played both could let me know:

1) What similarities do you see in the game and which game seems to handle the similar mechanics more elagantly?

2) What are the major differences in game mechanics?

3) Is either game particularly more difficult/ brain burny?

4) Which seems to play better with 2 players?
This is 2mm more height and 5mm less width than a poker card. UltraPro sleeves are out, because they run short on height. KMC sleeves should work, although barely on the height. The shuffling will be sloppy, because of the missing width.

unruled wrote:
Donald,

I know this post will be out of synch with the rest of this thread but...

I enjoyed reading the rules. Thanks to you and Jay for posting them.

Obviously, I can't be certain until I buy the game and play it, but at this point, the rules seem clear and thorough, and I have no questions.

In fact, it was the strength of the rulebook and its ability to convey the entire game to me that vaulted this game from somewhere near the bottom of my watch list to the absolute top.

Thanks again and best of luck with Dominion and your other efforts.

Ray
Thanks unruled, if that is your real name. I'm probably not going to respond to too many "way to go Donald X." posts, or for that matter "Donald X. you suck" posts, but since I'm already sitting at my computer, now seems as good a time as any to mention that I am probably going to get thanked and condemned for many things which I did not do. I didn't post the rules for example. It's Jay's website and if I had to guess I would say he posted them. It only takes one person to post them in any case. You could have one person move the mouse while the other person handled clicking, but one of you would have to be standing up, unless the two of you were on really good terms, and no-one would know the difference in the end anyway.

So here's who-all actually did what, from my perspective.

I designed the game, designed the cards, and showed the game off to Jay (that should count for something, because you have to fly to Columbus in the summer and it's very humid). I worked with Valerie and Dale on developing the game. I wrote the flavor blurb at the start of the rules, although it was edited, and the card FAQ is based on my original card FAQ, although it was heavily edited. Those of you who are game designers will be pleased to hear that the default RGG contract gives the game designer final say on the rules. So anything you don't like about the rules, you can blame me for; I could have stopped it. I got everything I wanted and have no complaints.

Valerie and Dale developed the game. That means they played it a bunch, and would sometimes say "this is a problem" or "this could be simpler" and I would say "oic" or "no you are" and eventually we would agree on a solution. Overall the game is better than it was at the start, which I would not have guessed was possible. They worked with the external playtesters, which I think mostly means that when people begged them for a copy long enough, they said "okay but you have to tell us what happens" and gave them one. They interacted with Jay, and tried to champion our interests on things that we didn't have final say over, like the layout. They wrote the rulebook, starting from scratch (that means "nothing," although you never hear it in other contexts, like, "scratch matters more to me than you darling"). They relentlessly showed the game off at cons.

Jay had a company with a bunch of great games, and was willing to look at new games from unknowns. If you are wondering why RGG is publishing this game instead of some other company, that's why. I thought, I need a publisher. I looked at the games I owned and they were mostly from RGG. I emailed him and he replied within 20 minutes and we set up to meet at Origins. RGG was my first choice and Jay bought the game within a month of seeing it and well 5/5, would use again. Jay let us run wild for a while, and then got to work on the rulebook layout and card layout and having whatever people it is magically produce art and cards and cardboard boxes. He lined up at least 4 other companies to produce copies in other languages, showed the game off at cons himself, and well he probably did some more stuff but it's just too much to pay attention to all of it, eventually you just need to take a break and ideally eat something. Oh he also paid for this stuff in advance, even though for all we know the game will tank and he'll be left with thousands of unsold copies, which I guess means he will try to set the world record for largest house of cards. Oh and he has that website, which I'm just mentioning so I don't get thanked for it again. It has rulebook .pdf's and everything.

Matthias I believe is the head art guy, so like, he probably made some calls on the layout and stuff, and did the cover and the frame on the cards, and he did a bunch of the art. The art isn't all by him, so I guess he has some artist friends and got them to do some. I don't really know much about this end of it, being three steps removed from it really, but he is in the credits and well I already mentioned him and there's no point deleting it. Hi Matthias.

There were a bunch of playtesters. Playtesters have lots of responsibilities. First you have to whine and whine about how you want a copy of the game. This may sound easy, but you know it's like when you whine about how you're losing, give the robber to someone else, put it on those bricks for instance. Sometimes it doesn't work and they take your ore. There's an art to it, like a white canvas with a single red stripe, or a hill covered with giant umbrellas. Anyway after that you have to actually play the game some, to show that you really meant that whining. You don't actually have to suggest any changes; for all we know it's fine already. Then you get your name in the credits, which you can show to your mother, unless you're just listed under the blanket of Columbus Area Boardgame Society or something, in which case not only do you have to live in Columbus, with its humid summers, you also have to show your mother your CABS membership card so she knows they're talking about you. She'll be proud anyway though, unless she's dead, and well for all of you playtesters with dead mothers, I'm sorry I brought it up.

So anyway those are the people and while I'm at it I should thank them. Thanks guys! Valerie and a few of the playtesters are girls, but I think guys means just a group of people, regardless of gender. A guy though, that's a guy. If I had said "thanks, you people, each of whom is a guy," that would have been sexist and wrong. But I think "guys" there is above reproach. Of course I've hidden these thanks in this thread about the rules being posted, where many of them will never see it. Dale will though. Hi Dale. Thanks. Pass it on. I think that's a developer responsibility.

So yeah if you like the art for Village or are glad that the game is coming out in Dutch, that was not my doing. And I didn't write the rulebook or do the layout for it or post it at RGG; I didn't even post the link to it (that was olavf, who I didn't mention because as far as I know he's not even working for us; the .pdf was news to me though, so thanks olavf). Similarly if you wish the cards were triangular instead or that the rulebook was plastic so you could read it underwater, that's not my department. If otoh you think that Village is too weak or too strong or too medium, you can point at me accusingly.

Also thanks in advance to those of you who eventually say something nice about me where I can read it, unless it's somewhere creepy, and apologies in advance to those of you who think we could have done better. What can I say. You never see the mistakes we didn't make.
I didn't consider that, and now that you mention it the actual art is darker too, which I hadn't noticed.
The originals are probably in CMYK, and the ones on the site in RGB. Conversion often involves a change of color.
