Thread: Operation Market Garden Rules Questions

Can anyone help on these?

(1) During the road impulse, defender fire is doubled. If the defender is also in a situation where terrain (hill to non-hill, across bridge) would also cause the defender fire to be doubled, is the there quadrupled (doubled and doubled again)? The rules specifically say terrain effects can only double the fire once (if on a hill across a bridge the defender would only be doubled and not quadrupled) but does this also apply to the road impulse?

(2) During movement, the phasing player moves into an enemy occupied hex with 3 units. The phasing player moves 3 units into the hex the first 3 units left to attack the enemy occupied hex. The phasing player fails to force all the enemy units out of the attacked hex and so must move his 3 attacking units back to the hex they attacked from. This leaves 6 units in a hex - overstacked. Are the 3 units that attacked therefore eliminated due to overstacking?

Thanks!
Michael

First of all, it could disrupt worker placement during the first round. Or, it may place more emphasis on the luck of the dice. Of course, the auctions during the first round may be completely disfunctional as well (I'd have to try it out to see). There is also the possibility this would give the start player too much of an advantage. Finally, it is likely that this variant could make the first stage of the game too scripted. In other words, there are a number of possible problems, so be careful!

Thread: New player variant
A variant I tried last week for introducing new players to the game:

No promissory notes on turn 1.

This sped up turn 1 a lot, as the players all got to get a feel for the way the game played before having to make decisions about how many promissory notes to take. I rather liked the way it played. In my first game (all inexperienced players), all the players ran up a lot of debt on turn 1 and the turn took *ages* to complete as we were struggling to try to plan the "perfect" turn.

Anyone see any downsides with this variant?

John
Thread: Playroom’s Cosmic Cows™ Abducted for UFO Fest

Playroom Entertainment® has consented to the abduction of its Cosmic Cows™ as part of a fun family tie-in with The 9th Annual UFO Festival, the nation’s second largest gathering of UFO fans and extra-terrestrial enthusiasts held at the infamous UFO sighting in McMinnville, Oregon .

In a unique Promotion, Playroom coordinated with Hotel Oregon Mc Menamin’s, the epi-center of the McMinnville UFO Weekend Festival, to offer a complementary copy of its cosmic cows game as a welcome gift in each room for the sold-out festival weekend guests.

In addition, retail outlets and souvenir sites, such as Hopscotch Toys in McMinnville, are stocking Extra Cosmic Cows games to meet the crowd demand for fun, outer space-themed products for the May 16th and 17th celebration weekend.

Dan Rowen, president of Playroom, said, “As soon as we published Cosmic Cows last year, it seems that we were instantly drawn to participate in the McMInnville ufo fest. We are very happy to work with Hotel Oregon McMenamin’s and participate in the fun and celebration of UFO Fest. Cosmic Cows has definitely identified a very faithful following of players who are also ufo believers and sci-fi fans.”

Hotel Oregon will also play host for one of the weekend’s highlight events, the Alien Costume Ball. The management has also arranged for some additional copies of Cosmic Cows to be available for party goers to play between dances and drinks.

Cosmic Cows, (MSRP $15, for ages 8 and up), is the game where players are the aliens that have been attracted to one area, just like the herd of UFO fascinated fans who have been pulled to McMinnville from all over the galaxy. When all the players gather for a game of Cosmic Cows, they have to choose different tractor beams in order to abduct three of the cute cow miniatures from the board. The player that uses his best positive energy when rolling the dice and out of this world strategy to pull three cows into his Zone wins.

About UFO FEST:
The 9th Annual UFO Festival is a celebration of the famous 1950 sighting in which two McMillville citizens witnessed and photographed a UFO. The famous pictures are said to be some of the most credible images of UFOs to date. This year, UFO Fest features famous UFO expert seminars, film screenings, a glow-in-the-dark 1-mile fun run through downtown McMinnveille, costume parades, an alien pet costume contest, outdoor dining, live music, concessions and other activities. The 2008 festival keynote speaker is Richard Dolan, author of UFOs and the National Security State (to be released later this year) and frequent guest on the History Channel, Sci Fi Channel, the BBC, and other networks. Also on hand will be producer and filmmaker Robert Nichol, who will offer an exclusive screening of Star Dreams, his documentary about the mystery of crop circ les .

ABOUT PLAYROOM ENTERTAINMENT:
Playroom Entertainment, based in North Hollywood, California, is a leading marketer of original board games and card games.
Thread: Vintage Parker Brothers Money

I'm an auctioneer in the Boston area. I am taking in a consignment from a former Parker Brothers employee who has a couple of original engraver's plates for sheets of game currency. He's of the impression that it's from Monopoly, but in doing some research, I have my doubts. Would anyone care to have a look at a photo of the plates and take a stab at the game they actually are from? My guess from the graphics on the back of the plates is tht the game likely dates from the 1930s-50s.
http://pauloadams.org/Auctioneer%20clipart/Money%20plate%20f...
http://pauloadams.org/Auctioneer%20clipart/Money%20plate%20b...

Thread: DVG News!

All of the Field Commander Rommel pre-orders were mailed out within a few days of the games arriving here, and we are getting very positive feedback. We have added a Player Testimonials page to the site so you can see some of the kind comments we have received. If you’d like to send in a testimonial, we’d be happy to add it to the site.

We also started working with a few of the industries great game distributors both in the US and in Europe. This means Rommel will be appearing in retail stores in the next few weeks.

Since Rommel is our first game, I contacted retail stores with a promotional offer to introduce our company. Many of them accepted our offer and I sent them two copies of the game, one for demoing and one to sell. The great news is, stores are already re-ordering the game.

We’ve updated the Alexander map and slideshow with some new artwork. I am working on a sample game to post soon.

You’ll also see a new “Launch Status” added to games. This number shows how many pre-orders the game still needs before it can go to the printer. I’ll update these numbers every week or two.

A few players asked for the Rommel Player Log to be made available for download. You can now download the PDF file with the link on the left panel.

Many thanks to Felipe Santamaria for translating the Rommel rules into Spanish! If you would like to translate the rules, we will be happy to make them available through our website and give you name credit.

Our main email: customerservice@dvg.com gets flooded with spam. If you’d like, you can also email me at: dan (at) dvg (dot) com

Thread: Cartagena and Clans with my wife...

Tonight my wife and I played a game of Cartagena and a game of Clans, it was a light Colovini night, and it was very enjoyable. Both my wife and myself enjoy Colovini’s designs, although they have a very abstract feel to them, and neither of us are big fans of abstract games, Colovini manages to hit a certain weight, a certain depth and a certain feel which we both find appealing.

I’m entering this session report under Colovini’s designer page rather than under one or the other game pages. I guess I prefer to keep the games played in the session together, so apologies to those who feel this isn’t the best place, or wonder why I didn’t separate this into two reports.

My wife (Kylie) and I enjoy playing a game or two together most nights; last night it was a single game of Hey! That’s My Fish! (my wife won convincingly), tonight we decided to wheel out a couple of favourites of ours – Clans and Cartagena. Both Clans and Cartagena were designed (or authored if you prefer) by Leo Colovini. Both games have a good weight* to them, both last the right amount of time^, both are intelligent, require thought, ask the players to think deeply, but do not require players to do so for so long as to make the game feel heavier than it should. Colovini is a designer I have been very impressed with.

Thanks to Ender Wiggins

The first game we played was Cartagena. This is a game I am quite good at (well - when compared to my wife), for some reason I see the combinations of actions better, I seem to be able to ‘feel’ out ‘good’ choices. I like getting all my pirates on the board as quickly as I can, because if you are ever in the unfortunate circumstance of having a pirate left behind by a full board section or more you are often in big trouble.

Thanks to Chris Norwood

There was some interesting card play, and both my wife and I played quite a few cards that placed single pieces alone on a space just in front of a trio of pirates – meaning usually that if the other of us wanted to move a pirate from that trio we would probably be giving two cheap cards to the other, and also meaning that no one could do a quick ‘step-forward and step back’ routine to gain a card (well -gain two at the cost of one).

My wife really does like Cartagena, when I first bought it she was very sceptical, but it has become one of her favourite games (up there with Fairy Tale, AMAZEing Labyrinth, Elasund: First City of Catan, and a few others). Despite her liking the game I sometimes feel she doesn’t enjoy playing it (odd – sine she usually suggests it!). My wife and I aren’t very competitive, we prefer to spend the time in friendly competition, and enjoy the experience of paying the game together. I won this game quite convincingly (paying her back for my atrocious record! – and last night’s game of Hey! That’s my Fish!).

The next game we played before settling down to watch a movie was Clans (a game where Kylie typically plays better than me).

Many of Colovini’s games are hard to teach I think, it is not that the rules are hard, or the games overly complex, it’s just that after playing one of his designs I have (and I know others who have) invariably said “Well, now I know what I’m supposed to be doing”. Most games can be explained quite well, new players will often have a good feel for their goals, if not at the beginning of the game then certainly by a turn or two in. Clans is a different sort of game though, new players really need to play through a game, and then set it up again and play for real (at least – new players like me).

Thanks to Gláucio Reis

Clans is a gorgeously produced game, and a very nice blend of thought/depth, time, and therefore weight. Clans is another game that feels as if it lasts the ‘right’ amount of time.

This game was one of the most interesting games I have played of Clans. I played quite poorly at the beginning of the game, though quite well toward the end, and my wife started off very strongly, though wasn’t quite cruel enough (or was bamboozled by my poor play and wasn’t sure of my colour) to finish the job at the end.
By half way through the game my wife had managed to grab more than half of the ‘village’ tokens, I had very few in hand (one or two), and my colour was languishing in fourth place (of five places).
It was quite obvious that Kylie’s colour was Yellow, though mine must have been a bit of a mystery due to my poor play.

Thanks to Tomi Korpipaa

Yellow managed to get a lead of about ten points early on, Kylie managed to hold that lead for most of the game. Due to some very careful manoeuvring of huts I managed to boost the points of most of the colours aside from Yellow. I ended the game by moving a hut to create two villages (thus giving me 6 ‘village’ tokens – the same number as my wife). It also boosted the points of all the colours aside from Yellow again.

At the end, the scoreboard was quite interesting – this was one of the first games I have ever played of Clans where the scores of the non-player colours were ‘up-there’ with the scores of the player colours. More amazingly, when we added the points for the ‘village’ tokens both Yellow (my wife), and Blue (myself) were tied…in last place.

I have never really seen a game before where the non-player colours not only ended up on par with the players’ colours, but were actually higher than them. It was a great game and thoroughly enjoyed by both of us! There was only one major problem left. We had played the game of Clans (my wife and I are very indecisive people with some things) agreeing that whoever won would pick the person to pick the movie we were going to watch (in other words – the loser got to pick the movie – which was probably going to be me). Since we drew the game there was no loser to pick, and we were back to square one…although I gave my wife the win in the end because I felt she had played a better game than me for the most part of the game.

It was a good night all in all; and much thanks to Mr. Colovini – an excellent designer. I have enjoyed Cartagena and Clans immensely, my friend owns Masons – and this is another game I feel you should play through once to get the hang of – and is another excellent game. I am now looking at Carolus Magnus and Carcassonne: The Discovery.

Colovini’s games aren’t the ‘best’ games designed – whatever that would mean – but they have a nice ‘weight’ and always seem to last about the ‘right’ length of time.

*Weight is a very subjective term. To me a game can be complex and ‘feel’ light, or a game can be relatively simple and yet ‘feel’ heavy. To me weight is a tug-of-war between playing time/pace and level of thought/depth. It is possible to have a slowly paced and yet deep game, which I would call ‘middle weight’ or ‘light’, and it is equally possible to have a short game that is deep, which I would call heavy. To some extent I see it as a ratio explaining the amount of concentration and thought required over the period of time the game is played for. But then this doesn’t truly capture how I feel about the rating yet. When I have explored the idea more I may add some more.

^This is even more subjective. Some games just feel like they should last longer. Some games you finish and think – that would have been a great game if it had finished a little earlier. The ‘right’ amount of time is of course dependant on the game itself, and has a lot to do with the weight of the game and the reward the player feels from playing the game.
