Hi,

I have a small collection of miniatures for this game and would like to sell them, however I'd like to know first if there's anybody here interested in them.

If so, I'd post the list of figures and offer them through the marketplace.

Cheers;

It's intended for use with a ruler.

I've used Heroscape tiles. They are just big enough to work.

There are hex mats out there you could use, if you can find one large enough for the bases to sit in.

Thread: Re: Can someone help me with the rules?

There actually were a number of fairly significant changes, but it's still the "same game." Think of it as evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

The biggest changes were the addition of cards (pilots & gears for 'mechs, faction pride/situational alliances, mercenary contracts, and planetary conditions that modify some of the basic rules of the game for the specific scenario you're playing) and introduction of the "assault order" which allows 'mechs to move half their speed rating and then shoot as part of the same activation. Drop those two elements and you're pretty much got the standard pre-AoD MechWarrior game; all the other changes were minor detail stuff.

Are you still doing the Call to Honor alternative ruleset?

Yes! i am still working on this rule set (probably always will be, i love to tinker) and its still available.

I am also pretty sure that i will be hosting it at the pacificon in northern california at the end of august.

I'm shooting for 8 players with about 1200 points each. My goal is to take some pictures and record the play time to be able to prove that the game is much faster. I'm positive we can play a 9,000 point+ game, to a conclusion, in about 3-4 hours.

Drop me a line with your email and i'll send you my rules

If your from the area come and play, that goes for anybody reading this!

Thread: Re: Scale

He is correct the base game scale is 1:160, however piece sculpts are not always consistent, especially compared to infantry. It hardly matters, though, it's all close enough. There is plenty in the model train industry in N scale and 1:144 micro armor and modelling that would be close enough for use.

Thread: Unit Stats

I am, again, looking for the stats to the units in this game. I am a database junkie and like sortable lists and comparisons. Every time I start this project (which has been several), I find I do not have the...focus...to click on each unit at the wizkids site and record the stats. I am hoping that a programmer or someone with infinite more patientce has amassed the information I am longing to possess. It does not have to be in a nice format, I can fix those things, I am just looking for each dial click and the numbers and special abilities at each stop.

Thank you in advance,

Thread: Re: Playing mechwarrior with other game's scenarios

Its always seemed, to me, that clix games lack the reason to fight. I read a scenario book by a man named charles grant and he hit the nail on the head when descibing miniature gaming. he said that at some point in a gamers life things will begin to get stale and reasons for combat will become more important. A bit of story and flavor to your games will help you get a bit more out of your miniatures.

Another thing we ask our selves while playing is, "would i continue on if this was a campaign?" We talk to each other realistically about whether or not we would commit our troops to a fight knowing they might be needed later on. Little things like that make the game much more interesting to me. so i thought i'd share those ideas here.

Thread: Playing mechwarrior with other game's scenarios

So i really love playing mechwarrior. The sci-fi combined arms is one of the coolest ways to play miniature games. One of the hundreds of problems i have with this game, though, is that their scenario's are generic and boring. they are just variations of the same thing. 400 points, here's this thing in the middle, Fight! 400 points, here's this thing off to the left, fight! lame. everything caters to the people who play tournaments. Wizkids builds all of its scenarios around this idea that we are all sitting at home practicing for the next time we get to go to the nationals. I like to play like there is some reason for all my little plastic men to be killing each other.

In my opinion games like this one only shine when you have a great scenario that presents problems and many ways to tackle it. just sluggin away at each other defeats the purpose of bringing combined arms to the field. You generally bring a mix of units to the field because there is a mix of things that need to be done. Other wargames out there know this and offer great scenarios.

So how do you fix this problem? steal from other games! look for complex scenarios that offer multiple objectives and victory conditions. You will find yourself building more complex armies that are created to complete the objectives and not stomp the other guys guts out.

For example, I own Tide of Iron and its expansion. The scenarios in those books are really great at offering multiple objectives and victory conditions.

Recently i adapted the scenario, rescue mission, from days of the fox to mechwarrior. In that scenario some troops get cut off and must be rescued. in addition to that victory condition there are several objectives that can be taken to give your troops command bonuses in tide of iron. to adapt this scenario to mechwarrior we first set up the table to look similar to the one in the tide of iron booklet. the forces in that booklet are also pretty similar so we set the point totals at an equal level, 1200 points. then we changed up the situation a bit.

Jade Falcon has recently begun operating in a dragon's fury controlled area. They were moving prototype armor over the area when it was shot down. the objective is to retrieve the armor and move it off the field (rescue the troops). Also there are pieces of the downed aircraft scattered across the map and those pieces need the be secured (dragon's fury) or destroyed (jade Falcon). These pieces represent and are placed in the same location as the multiple objectives in the scenario.

Now you have a game for combined arms. I was playing dragon's fury and knew i would have to secure the field quickly. I took medium/light mechs, medium/heavy tanks, some scout vehicles, a few helicopters for quick support, and various infantry pieces to help secure the city and take a few of the minor objectives. My opponent decided he needed much of the same forces. we both took a couple extra APCs to nad that armor.

What occured was a battle not dictated my the same ideas as a pitched battle, but a battle that was fought in multiple places over multiple objectives and victory conditions. We found are selves embrioled in several small battles and manuevering around several flanks in order to complete these objectives. I had to hold the city (the escape route) while trying to secure all the minor objectives all over the field.

It was a lot of fun and i thought i'd share our strategy for adding spice to this game. In a couple weeks we are going to try a scenario from memior 44 and see how that fairs.

next time your up for a game in the mechwarrior universe, steal a scenario from a game that know what its doing. you'll be a lot happier.
I got an email the other day by someone i had sent these rules to and they were pleasently surprised to find out that i had written a full set of rules so i thought i'd just update my post and further explain my variant

This variant fully replaces the AOD rule book and is fifty pages in length. everything is covered and the abilities card is re-written to reflect the new rules. You can download this variant and use it exclusively when playing mechwarrior. their is no need to have played or understand AOD to play this variant. infact i was told by a player of my variant that they taught this system to a player who hated AOD and they enjoyed playing this. i am more than happy to email these rules to anyone so do hesitate to ask.

In the mean time i'm thinking about re-writing the entire thing so it can be uploaded here. so anybody shy about giviing out their email post here and give me some encouragement to undertake that endeavor.

as a bit of a qualifier for me personnally. I have been playing mech clix since the day dark age could be pruchased. I am in college and have a long history of very high marks in english classes. i just finished my argumentative english class with an A. the rules are well written i assure everyone.

of course its dead, we all knew it. It would have been nice to have some going away presents, though. When mageknight went bust i bought a case of their last set and they sent me a ton of swag for supporting their farewell set. It seems to me like every year they care less and less about the people who love their products that aren't as popular. well i look forward to buying everyone's cheap collections on ebay when they dump their pieces out of anger.

Well, the official word from Wizkids is out:

"As our own line, MechWarrior holds a valuable place within our company’s portfolio. We spent the last year investigating options for this line. Specifically, we’d like to reinvent the line around a significant media event, like a movie, which we are pursuing aggressively with our new owners. Due to our cost challenges, it will be difficult to support the line between now and the re-launch, but we’re committed to review all options. Ultimately, we need to design a program that does justice to the brand, its consumers, and our partners while not losing money in the effort."

It's dead, Jim.

Quick update:

- MWRealms is back up (after being out for roughly 18 hours for a "1-2 hour" maintenance shut down).

- One of the regulars claims he got the following reply to his e-mail to WK asking for clarification about the situation. "We’re going to post some info shortly on our 2008 releases. I totally understand the consumer reaction to this snapshot of our business from January. Unfortunately, the information is somewhat dated and out of context and we’ll be posting more information on the matter shortly. I hope to have everything wrapped up in a few hours."

Using my special "WK Prognostication Decoder Ring" (tm), that probably means that some time next week they'll post a teaser or two about some upcoming MW special event or exclusive release scheduled for the summer convention season, just to reassure us the product line isn't extinct... yet. Just once, it would be refreshing for WK to pro-actively tell the fans what's going on, without waiting for some helmet fire crisis to throw the poor dog a bone.

But this is WK after all. It ain't gonna happen...

Thread: Re: MechWarrior - rumor and speculation

I'd known about, but not really considered the non-renewal of the novel contracts important. I've never read and have no interest in the novels, but I realize they were part of the alure/mythos of the game for many.

A related matter is that Jordan Weisman, the guy who "invented" BattleTech/MechWarrior, recently bought back the intelectual property rights for BattleTech/MechWarrior themed computer/console games from Microsoft. While Weisman was one of the founders of WizKids, he's no longer associated with them, so you can't help but wonder what's going on there...

And then, to top it all off, one of the resident MWRealms conspiracy theorists has pointed out that WizKids is now owned by Topps (the folks who make baseball cards), and Topps was recently acquired by a private investment firm called Madison-Dearborn Associates (not that it's pertinent, but Michael Eisner of Disney fame is on their Board of Directors). According to him, Madison-Dearborn has a habit of using struggling "big name" firms (which Topps/WizKids are), that have relatively little corporate debt, to obtain large loans which they then use to pay out massive divedends to themselves, and then unload the now heavily debt-ridden company, where upon it's forced to declare bankrupcy. He theorizes that Topps/Wizkids is being deliberately siphoned of every penny the investors can get out of it and is about to be dumped -- hence the lack of any planning for future releases.

Personally, I don't think his notions hold water (according to the briefing, only MechWarrior doesn't have any upcoming releases but the other product lines have between 6-8 for the upcoming year). But it makes for amusing reading...

Add to that the persistent, if (I think) unconfirmed, rumors that Roc won't be publishing the novels anymore, and, yeah, maybe things aren't so hot. I figured the fiction would be brought into BattleCorps, anyway, but if there's no line to support, maybe not.

Edit: It does appear that Roc's paperback-novel license has ended with MW #30, but I can't find an official word of that.

Thread: MechWarrior - rumor and speculation

In case you haven't heard, there's been an interesting "development" with WizKids "MechWarrior" (MW) game.

On Tuesday evening (18MAR08), somebody posted a link to a powerpoint presentation they discovered while surfing around on the WizKids site onto the MWRealms fan discussion board. The 36 slide presentation, dated January 23 and entitled "DAD Business Review" (DAD being "Diamond/Alliance Distributors," the company that has the exclusive contract to distribute all of WizKids product nationally), contained an overview of what appeared to be all of WizKids intended product releases and activity for business year '08. All product lines, including a new "Star Trek" line, were discussed with a fair amount of detail -- all product lines, that is, except one...

There was absolutely no mention of the MechWarrior product line in the briefing. None.

Predictably, the revealing of this presentation caused considerable agitation on the MWRealms discussion boards. Lots of speculation about this being a clear indicator that the MW product line was being terminated, conjecture that the absence of MW from the presentation was because the brief was incomplete, theories that the presentation was a red herring posted by a prankster or a competitor to undermine WizKids...

Anyway, after a couple days of further "investigation," we now know the following:

- The presentation is legitimate (confirmed by a game store owner who has a friend who works for Diamond/Alliance).

- The presentation is complete except for one final "summing up/questions" slide.

- The original thead on the MWRealms board that contained a link to the presentation (so people could view it for themselves) has been moved to the archives on the MWRealms site (it hasn't been deleted, and can still be accessed, but it's very difficult to find). The link to the presentation itself is now locked out. The presentation itself on the WizKids site is now password protected.

- Yesterday evening, the MWRealms site went down for unscheduled maintenance for "1-2 hours." It's still down this morning as I write this.

- While WizKids is aware of the discussion and furor over the presentation, they have made no comment. Every post made to their forum boards that has mentioned the presentation has been deleted, often within mere minutes of it being posted (somebody is clearly "watching").

- Two WizKids employees with long and close association with the MW product line, Jonas Saunders (the top MW envoy) and Tony Riviera (who'd been acting as lead MW product coordinator) recently left WizKids (i.e. within the last month). Their departures, according to personal posts made by them, were entirely voluntary (and apparently under more-or-less amicable conditions, if what they said is to be believed). This leaves Kelly Bonilla as the sole MW product line designer/manager; she's also product line designer/manager for "Pirates" and "Heroclix" (WizKids two top money earners).

- The last time any WizKids employee posted on their MW forum board to respond to questions/comments about the game was over four months ago.

And there you have it... Draw your own conclusions.

Dark Age all the way my friend. Although the figures from the AoD avenue look significantly better I think that DA is a better game with a few of the AoD rules added on. MAKE SURE you house rule Dark Age with only SOME Aod rules. i personnaly dont like the mech customization they did. it made "unpiloted" mechs or rather mechs with no pilots attached, incredably weak and it unbalanced the game even more. I have so many of these units but i dont buy them even more, mainly because of the bigbig change to AoD.

my opinion:
Dark Age starter
2 darkage boosters
any Aod Booster for variety. the sculpts are very good cept toward the taile end before vangaud they started to look alittle like gunduma and i dont really like that.

I know there's the "starter set", but are there any other major purchases I'd need? I want to get enough for two people to get into it.

The AoD starter set is a great place to start. It contains all mercenary units, so you'll be able to use them in pretty much any army. From there, grabbing up cheap lots on ebay is probably your best way to get a good base of units. Don't just get mechs. One of the best thing about this game is that it is a combined arms game with lots of different unit types. It really gets tactically interesting with a varied pool of units.

When looking at ebay lots, I would reccommend trying to stay within two factions or so. A lot of the luck negating mechanics (like formations) require units to be within the same faction or be a merc to work.

Asura wrote:
I know that the game's name has changed to Mechwarrior Age of Destruction. What changed? Is it now a new game with new minis, or was the title just to accompany some rule changes and the release of some new units?

Much has changed from DA to AoD. Mechs can now move and shoot, can fire into and out of base contact (which nicely balanced artillery which was previously too powerful) and introduces global terrain cards which have interesting global effects on the battlefield.

Asura wrote:
Would you recommend this game over Mage Knight?

Absolutely, yes.
Thread: Re: New Player Help

Age of Destruction is "version 2" of MW. The rules were changed significantly, and the minis for the mechs were changed to accommodate the addition of gear and pilots for mech modification. The general opinion is that the new rules are significantly better; the mechs released in all sets since the rules changes (every set from Age of Destruction forward) have very different stats to accommodate these changes, though you can still use the older units just fine with the new rules, keeping in mind that they can be a bit unbalanced. Also, the artillery units prior to AoD can be *very* unbalanced.

As for what units to get, I'd buy at least a pair of boosters in addition to a starter pack for some variety. That should be enough to start, at least.

And while I prefer it to MK, I can't recommend it over MK, nor can I recommend MK over MW. It's a matter of taste. I prefer giant robots to dwarves and elves.

As above. Most of the pics upload clearly show the 'get-a-ruler-out' variety of miniature action in this game, but there don't seem to be any details on if this has a hex-based version of play, like the old Battletech games (which could be played either using either a hex-grid or on an 'open field' with rulers and strings and such).

Is this game one or the other...or only one option?

Thread: Re: This game sucks!.....But not anymore!

Hey troy, we are insanely faction loyal. And by that i mean that we only choose units that have the same matching symbol when we build our armies. We firmly believe that every army has its own unique strengths and weaknesses and they come to the fore when you start building larger armies (like 2,000 or more points). The other reeason we are faction loyal is because we get confused about who has what when both armies are a hodge podge of units. As far as the faction abilities go we almost always forget to implement them or we remember them on and off and that pisses people off, so we usually just leave them out. At this point we have so many different units (between my father and i we have well over 500 pieces), and there are so many different units available, that if we think a unit is not worth its points we just don't use it or we agree on a point value thats ok (we also don't squabble about having a few points over each other). I personnally collect Clan dragon's fury, House kurita, clan Jade Falcon, Republic of the Sphere, and Mercs (we play mercs as if they were their own faction). From my experiences (been playing mech warrior since the day dark age was available and this version of the rules for about 6 months) jade falcon mechs (Pre-AOD) are the only units that feel like they are lacking because the faction specific rules are not in effect. This problem may be larger for me because i like to play some what in character with the armies. Clan Jade Falcon favors mech combat so i often take more mechs when i field them. Other than that my other armies function very well and are a blast to use. Its great fun to flood the field with elite dragon's fury infantry and pick apart another players tanks and mechs.
Hope you have a great time with your game and When you finish it drop me a line and tell me what worked for you and what didn't. Thanks!

Do you still build your armies with a specific faction, or do you play that all units are legal in the same army? It's been a while since I played MW, and the faction rules drove me nuts. I think that when I give this a go later this week, that I will do away with the faction rules.

Thread: More stuff we changed!

Reading all this discussion got me thinking about other stuff i've changed and i thought i'd share them. first a disclaimer. if you don't like any of this or enjoyed it before then don't use it this is just stuff we changed and i'll list why along with the change.

first off we changed the artillery a lot and i went over that in a response to lance but i'm just going to sum it all up here agian. with our artillery rules, anytime you are using the pog it is indirect fire and you must establish line of sight with another unit. There are never any modifiers to the artillery's based number unless it is firing at medium or long range. the reason we did this is for simplicity and we felt it was pretty realistic compared to how artillery is used now. Artillery is always called in from the field they don't just drive around looking for stuff to launch their missiles at. In our rules most people end up establishing a "base" in the cornner of the field. this base is comprised of repair units, command vehicles, and artillery. usually you just set up shop and start running the show.

Second is the repair ability. We play that any unit being repaired in the fire phase may not fire that phase. This stops that lame crap like shooting your artillery when the tech guys are crawling all over it. also we changed how the black arrows are used to make it a bit more fair. when a black arrow comes up you must stop repair that turn and may try agian next turn but it takes 2 clix to pass it. Basically this levels the playing field because there are some real cheesy armies out there. If we are going to have an unrealistic mechanic in the game it might as well be fair.

third is transport ability. i don't even remeber how it worked in the other game but in our rules we play that the units being transproted may not exit unless the transporter does not move. Also the units exiting may make a full move out of the transporter.

Fourth is VTOLs. obviously everybody can move and shoot now so they don't get anything special anymore. they don't seem to be to expensive for what they can do. they still get the modifier for being in the air.

fifth is the most contraversial. energy weapons are no longer reduced to 1 click by infantry. Infantry are to good and should not be getting so many advantages. Basically energy is just a different set of colors on the pac now. We did this primarily because we kept forgetting to check for it and it was upsetting game play. we still debate whether or not it should cause heat to mechs and i'm leaning towards it shouldn't because of how hard it is to get rid of the heat in our rules.

Lastly i want to say a little bit about points. I hate to say this because for some people its like saying there is no santa clause but its totally true. Wizkids makes up the points and it is not always balanced right. Shocker i know! Another fact is that no two armies ever commit to battle equal. Some figures are going to be worth every penny and some figure aren't going to be worth beans in my rules and i'm going to ask you what changed? i encourage everyone to make armies that are in character, realistic and respectful to your opponent. when looking at your completed army ask yourself, "is my opponnent going to enjoy gaming against this army?" and "would i see an army like this on a real field or in the mechwarrior universe?" Just because you thought of that ultimate legal combo doesn't make it ok to do. don't be a tournament . The game is called Mechwarrior: Call to Honor because its about time we started playing this game with honor.

OK so if i think of something else we changed i'll post it and i'm working on a rule book. if anybody is interested in a rule book please tell me so i'm motivated to finish it.

P.S. I love to hear what people think and i always say that discussion and debate solidifies belief. so jump in and give me feedback and your idea of how things should work. don't be afriad to tell me what's up.
