Thread: Rules

Hi, I picked up a copy of the wooden version of this at a charity shop the other week, but it has no rules. It looks fairly simple, but if any one can give me a few clues, or better still a scan of the rule set, I'd be very grateful.

Richard

Thread: User Review

This is one of the Shoptaugh pocket range along with games like Shuttles and Calypso. You get a palm sized plastic box with a lid. The game plays in the box. Like the other two games mentioned, this is a 2 player game. In Interplay, the winner is the first player to make one of the combinations of patterns shown using a mixture of their own and their opponent’s pieces.
The pieces each player start with consists of a series of thin sticks, a series of small solid cylindrical blocks and a series of small tubular blocks that will slide down over the sticks. Sticks can be placed inside your opponents tubes, tubes can be placed over your opponent’s sticks, but you can’t play your own pieces over your own pieces. The game proceeds by a player doing one of 2 things; playing on of their pieces from their stock to the board, or moving one of their pieces that is already on the board. The moment a player successfully creates one of the target shapes, the game ends.
How does the game play?
Think of it as complex noughts and crosses; you need to think along more than one axis simultaneously, but since you are both using identical pieces (albeit of different colours) the strategy level rises. The game rarely takes more than 10 minutes, and as such is one of the games that effectively lives in our camping rucksack. We play it in the pub as well (Always guaranteed to garner interest from people sat nearby) and it occasionally appears as a filler for the end of the night.
Can it stalemate? Yes and no. Theoretically yes; you could both have all of your pieces out and be waiting for the opponent to make a mistake. In practice, I have never seen this happen, although I am regularly surprised that games that appeared to be headed towards stalemate suddenly ends. Usually with me losing.
I like this game for lots of reasons; all of Philip Shoptaugh’s games are attractive and well presented and come in their own little durable carrying case that means that they slip neatly into a side pocket. It’s simple, strategic and quick, and I like to use it as a warm up game for meatier treats to follow for the simple reason that it forces you to concentrate.
In the pantheon of Shoptaugh games, I put this behind Calypso but ahead of Shuttles. Calypso is neater and simpler, freeing you to concentrate on the game, whereas even after x years playing, we both have to refer to the rules with Interplay to remember what the target patterns are.
If you can get hold of this game it is a good one to have in your collection, but you may struggle as I have a feeling that it is out of production.
