Thread: Quick eyes on first play

I convinced my wife to try another of my thrift store finds. Not expecting much, we read the instructions and spread out the cards.

The main rules indicate that the game should be played through with one of the four categories; shape, colour, pattern, or position. However we decided to immediately add one of the suggested variant rules; the winner of each round gets to decide on the category for the next round. The only difficulty was in remembering to clearly state the new category before taking the point card.

The points were collected neck and neck. There were a couple of miscounts as the rules were figured out, so we abandoned two point cards in the interest of fairness. Playing a twosome in this game means that if your opponent touches the wrong card and gets disqualified, you can take your time in choosing the correct match.

At the end, the score came out 10 to 10 with two discards. Next time we'll add the interesting bluffo variant rules to add further tension.

Thread: Scan: The Myopic Need Not Apply

I like to have games that let people draw on some of the different types of "intelligences" that educators have been busy identifying to explain why Johnny can't read.

And Scan is a fun, quick game, that makes a great filler by getting people to mentally shift gears as well as use their reflexes.

Plus there's no reading, so it's great for your pre-literate and foreign friends.

Gameplay: The blue cards are spread out on the table, and a single tan card is flipped up. The object is to collect as many tan cards by being the first one to identify a match among blue cards by touching it. Each card has four different "pictures": Pattern, Shape, Position, and Color. The person who won the last card chooses (before the new card is shown) which "picture" needs to be matched on the next card.

The game is easily explained and instantly engaging. Because of the competitive element, people find themselves "gambling" on a choice in order to be the first to select it. If someone touches the wrong tile, play continues, but that player can not choose again, and must forfeit one of their tan cards to the player who eventually finds the correct card.

The person with the most tan cards at the end of the game is the winner.

Varient: A lot of game varients feel to me as afterthoughts that are just included to give the illusion of higher replayability. The Bluffo varient in Scan, however, works quite nicely. A card is removed from the blue deck for the game, so that some of the symbols that come up on the tan cards won't have a match on the board. The first person to discover this then touches one of the three Bluffo cards wins the round and the Bluffo card, which is worth two points.

Since there are some rounds where everyone takes a long time to finally zero in on the correct match even in the standard game, this adds a nice little twist to the game, especially for advanced players.

Random Thought:
What I find interesting is that even within the realm of "quick identification intelligence", players find themselves to be better at identifying one of the subcategories.

Overall: A fun game. While these are not my favorite types of games, they are good to rotate in on game nights to shake things up, and Scan fills this niche very well. 7
