Thread: Minnesota Mini-Con

I went to the Minnesota Dawn Patrol Mini-Con last weekend and had a blast. I had planned to go to the Twin Cities for the Michigan-Mnnesota football game with my friend Mike Carr, who is a Golden Gopher season ticket holder. After these plans were made, Andrew Priest made arrangements for three days of Dawn Patrol at a game store called Monster Den. Thank you Andrew!

I arrived in Minneapolis on Friday afternoon. My buddy Troy Denning and his wife Andrea picked me up at the airport. We went to lunch at the Mall of America and spent the afternoon hanging out. I hadn't seen Andrea in about five years, so that was nice. We spent about an hour making the 20-minute drive to my hotel in downtown Minneapolis. All over the city there were these odd lane closures where one block would be close in one direction, seemingly at random, that would force all traffic to detour 2 or 4 blocks to get around the lane closure. As it was rush hour, the traffic was already terrible. In hindsight, I should have jumped out of Troy's truck and walked the last two blocks the first time got close to the hotel as we circled in.

I was rooming with Jim Barber and we got a terrific room rate at The Hilton Marquette at Marquette and 7th. It's the nicest Hilton room I've had in a long while, and I highly recommend the hotel.

I liked the atmosphere in Monster Den. Friday night they had about 40 people playing Magic, another 15 playing various video games, and two tables of Dawn Patrol (FitS) players. It's been a long time since I've been in a game store with that many people in it at one time. The store sold soda pops and snacks, which was GREAT! They also had nice displays of a variety of upcoming collectible games. It's a big store, with lots of tables for gaming. I would love to have a Monster Den here on Bainbridge Island.

Mission 1:
September 1918 I got a big block Fokker and flew Viz. Adolf Eirman. It was his 24th mission! I scored 15 hits on the first two turns and took zero damage. I pilot hit Mike Carr on turn one and he rolled a no effect would. Because of the criticals he took, he decided to dive out of combat. No one chased him, assuming a critical wound. So that was a pretty good start.

Mission 2:
November 1916 and I flew a Nieuport 11. The Germans also only had a single gun. I only got off one long burst and only took 3 points of damage. The mission was abbreviated by a dinner reservation. Mike Carr, Jim Barber, and I went to a restaurant for which Mike had a coupon. It was only OK.

Mission 3:
November 1918 again. This time I rolled up a Fokker DVIII. I don't have a pilot specializing in this plane, so decided to fly Viz. Eirman again. It's his first flight as a double ace. I scored another pilot hit on the first turn. It was a short flight. I dished out 11 damage and took 12.

Saturday we went to the Michigan-Minnesota football game. It was a strange game. Michigan outscored Minnesota and won the game, but both teams seemed very flat to me. I had come to the game fully expecting a loss for the Wolverines, so I was surprised by the outcome. I got a lot of laughs for the shirt I had made for the game, "Oh Lloyd Wherefore Art Thou?" This was the first time I'd seen pre-game warm-ups. I'm not sure how Rich Rodriguez recruits anyone. I know that if I were 18 years old and saw those pre-game drills on a visit I would be out of there. RichRod has the players line up into a heart shape and then run by each other for a "low five," at the end of warm ups. What is this a marching band or a football team? Michigan has always had a huge edge recruiting brainiac players. RichRod coaches as though every kid is a dummy. We can't fire him fast enough. But I digress.

Mission 4:
After the football game we returned to the Monster Den for more games. The next was a barnburner. The allies were on a bombing mission over the North Sea. I was flying one of the two British D.H. 9's carrying bombs. After several turns of dogfighting I got clear along with the other D.H. 9 for the bombing run. I flew low and slow and got maximum modifiers, and missed. My wingman made a much slopier bombing run and also missed, but the "miss" scattered and still hit the destroyer. So I had a 20% better chance to hit, and the other guy won the Distinguished Flying Cross.

As we climbed out of our bombing run we were in another dogfight. My pilot took a light wound. I was able to disengage and fly to shore where I put down immediately on my side of the lines. Because of the light wound, two rear fuselage criticals, the road that was in terrible condition, and landing with a crosswind, I only had a 10% chance to land. I rolled an "11," then the worst type of crash. My 6/2 pilot was killed instantly while my rookie observer was thrown clear and survived.

Mission 5:
January 1918 on the Italian front. I flew my 3/0 Italian Hanriot pilot. It was an uneventful 8-turn mission.

Mission 6:
My most frustrating mission of the weekend. I flew an SE5a in an 11-turn game. I missed 4 of 5 shots, only did 3 hits total, and took 4 damage.

Mission 7:
A very quick 7-turn mission. I flew a rookie in an Alb DVa, only doing 7 damage, and taking none.

Mission 8:
On Sunday morning we got together for one more game before flying home. It was a fun one. We were on the Italian front again and I got an Italian Nieuport 17 with only a wing gun. I successfully tailed Jim Barber four turns in a row. He was stymied. The good news for him was that my wing gun was out of ammo for two of those four turns. So when I was taking my tailing cards, I only took maneuvers that would allow me to get in my five straight moves sometime during the turn so that I could attempt a reload. So while successfully tailing while reloading doesn't do much damage, it was still fun.

The flight home to Seattle was uneventful, and I was able to get home in time for Sunday dinner. I had a lot of fun over the weekend.

The Mini-Con will be held at the ‘Monster Den’ game store which is centrally located in S. Minneapolis with easy access to the airport, Mall of America and downtown Minneapolis. The theme will be a total points prize tournament. Game designer Mike Carr will be attending. Play will start Friday afternoon, continue all day Saturday with the main events and prize ceremony Saturday night. There will be open gaming Sunday if there is enough interest. Cost for the weekend of playing should be around $20 depending on number of attendees.

Registration Instructions: Please visit the Dawn Patrol website at www.dawnpatrol.org to register for the event. On the website, select the COMMUNITY tab and click on EVENT REGISTRATION to sign up!! Also, we would like to get an idea of whether or not we need to reserve gaming space for Sunday, so please also visit the forum and under ‘events’, add a note as to which days you plan on attending.

Accommodation Recommendations: The venue is 5-10min. from the Mall of America and the Airport, 10 min from downtown Minneapolis. www.hotwire.com or www.orbitz.com usually has great hotel rates, from $40 for a 2 star to $70-90 for a 4 star around MoA/Airport. The MN vs. Mich football game Saturday and Vikings vs. Packers Sunday are both happening locally this weekend, so come for the games and stay for the fun!!
My parents would have to search out several boxes worth of Dungeons and Dragons and other stuff. The exact location that I can give my parents is that the game is in their house. It would take me a while to search all the boxes and closets of game stuff to find it.

My mom located Conquistador, Pacific Theater of Operations, Top Secret a ton of Dungeons and Dragons stuff, plus some other games - however no Dawn Patrol.

Anyway, if no one thinks this is legit, so be it, I just want to play this game again and seeing how there is a Vassal version, I thought if someone could send me the rules I would appreciate it.

Again, if you don't think I have the game and don't want to help out, that's fine.

Thanks
Will

PS If it helps I am 35 years old, I bought the game when I was in sixth grade. I had gone to the store to pick up the expansion for Star Frontiers called "Knight Hawks" They did not have it, so I looked around found Dawn Patrol and with the financial suport of my Grandmother purchased the game. Once a week at school we played games at lunch. Dawn Patrol made a number of showings.

I know this will meet with some skepticism, but here goes:
I owned this game in High School. Currently I live in a different state than my parents and would like to get a copy of the rules, mostly to play on Vassal, but I will not be traveling to my parents house for many months. So if anyone could hook me up with a copy of the rules, I would appreciate it

Will
Mike H. wanted to make sure that I pointed out that on the fifth mission his pilot had some choice words for the armorer when he got back to the aerodrome. This 15 mission ace took 4 200ft shots at Andrew P. and scored a total of 0 HF! a rough ending to the night.

That first mission was a milestone for me... I have 2 original British pilots left from when I started playing in the 80's, my Sopwith Pup & D.H.5, and they are both now experienced pilots! The Pup was what I flew on my very first mission, and of course as a kid I rightly named him Luke Skywalker So its only fitting now that my D.H.5 pilot will be Han Solo!
So next game when I fly him and someone comments on how that wierd swept back wing & single gun makes for a 'piece of junk' I can reply...

"She'll make point five past lightspeed. She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts"
Thread: Ghost Jasta Wed. Night Game

Had another great night with a slightly different line up. Kurt was
unable to make it but Mike H. was the forth to our regular three of
myself, Andy P., and John B.. We managed to get 5 games in before
calling it a night.

The first mission was a May 1917 western front fighters. The allies
were in DH5's (AP, MH) Vs. an Alb DIII(me) and a Fokker DII(JB). I
took up Lt Krupp (17m 2k). The DH5's did their best to leave us with long distance side shots when they lost the initiative. JB in the Fokkker DII decided early that being in an out performed and single gun fighter was not the ideal position to be in. JB was able to put some space between himself and the DHs on turn three and on beating them on initiative on turn four decided to escape. Although I was able to move last on turn 4 the DHs had left me with nothing better than a 350' side shot, so I joined my wingman and escaped.

The second mission of the night saw the same teams but was a North sea fighters battle in July of 1918. Once again my lack of luck landed me and my wingman (JB) in Rumpler 6b1 seaplanes. Thats right the one gun wonder of 1918 is back! Our opponents decided to make sure we had a good challenge and brought up Sopwith Dolphins(AP, MH). With a miscalculation on my part on turn one the Dolphins made a Rumpler sandwich out of me. This continued for another 2 turns with me losing the initiative and the Dolphins hammering away. My wingman did his best but could only do so much. On the 3rd turn I took my sixth hit to the engine which then caught fire. I attempted to put it out on turn 4 and failed. The only option left was to jump from the plane and hope for a miracle (5%), I didn't get it. So my unnamed 1M 0K pilot was gone. JB was able to escape shortly after that . AP and MH cut for the kill and MH came away with it.

Mission number 3 was again a July of 18 western front with the Germans having a 2-seater on a ground attack mission. The allies were once again in Dolphins (JB, MH). The Germans brought up some interesting machines, an AEG J1 (AP) and a Alb DVa(me) with a high compression engine. The AEG J1 is an armored plane designed specifically for ground attacks. The armored bit sounds nice but the plane's forward guns fire downward and can not be used to fire at planes! There is nothing like being in a low performance plane that can't fire forward. The high compression engine stats were handed out at the Fight in the Skies Mini-con this year. Alb DV, DVa, and Fokker DVII now have a chance at a 200 HP Mercedes engine. As soon as he could AP decided to take his AEG and get away from the Dolphins. As he escaped on the second turn I used the full performance of the new engine to the shock of the allies. alas, even though the new engine allowed the Alb to come close to equal performance with the Dolphins it was still 2 on 1 and I choose to escape into the clouds after only 4 turns.

Mission #4 was set in Dec of 1917 in the Belgian section. The Belgians were in Hanriot HD1s(AP,Me) while the Germans (JB,MH) were in Alb DV or DVa not sure which. The moral of the Belgians was dealt a serious blow on the second or third turn when MH showed his hand by doing 10 points of damage! Turns out he was flying a 43M 11K Ace. The Belgians managed to drive one of the Albs (JB) into the clouds on turn 4 with a performance cutting Critical hit but AP had absorbed a lot of damage. This plus the fact that my dice were cold as could be (missed 2 out of 3 50ft shots on MH) helped the Belgians decide to escape into the clouds also.

The nights final mission was western front fighters in Sep. of 1918. The Brits (MH,Me) in Camel 150s Vs Germans(AP,JB) in Fokker DVIIs. My luck was better in this game and I was able to get in shots on JB's DVII in turns 1 and 2. On the second turn of 5 hits scored 3 were in the center wing of which one was a pilot hit. The pilot hit result was a kill and JB lost a 1M 0K DVII pilot. AP was able to put some separation between him and me but my wingman was on his tail. We spent a few turns chasing him this way till he allowed me to catch up by not diving away in a failed attempt to shake his tail. On the next turn he was able to shake his tail but MH's excellent flying allowed me to box up with him and only give AP a head on shot. AP decided it was better to use the opportunity to escape.

Once again fun was had by all and we only hope that we will be able to get a few more players to the table.

Hey JohnnyD

Dawn Patrol has a very active following in the Fight in the Skies Society which still publishes a news letter and hosts a yearly convention.

There is also an active Vassal group that attempts to play Thursday nights and one morning on the weekends.

With a new website being developed to synchronize both the Vassal and in person communities there will be more and more chances at getting in Dawn Patrol games. The new website is still a work in progress but here is the link.

http://virtualdawnpatrol.com/index.php

Hope you get a chance to dust of your old copy.

Thread: Wednesday night DP game

We managed to get our 4-some(myself, AndyP, JohnB, and Kurt) together and played 4 missions.

The first was a rare North Sea fighters mission well sort of. It was for the allies(JohnB, AndyP) at least, they were in American camels. I rolled a Rumpler 6 b.1 which has a single deck gun (a German with a single deck in Aug of 18!!!) and my wing man fared even worse in a Friedricshafen 33l(Kurt) this is a 2 seat sea plane with a single gun for the observer and a 50/50 chance for a single deck gun. He failed his chance at the deck gun but hey that means he had a radio We did better then we had a right to, on the second turn we beat one of the allies and were able to dive away. On the third turn we beat both of the allies on dice and escaped!

Next mission saw DVII(Me, Kurt) (185) Vs. SE 5a's(AP, JB) also in Aug of 18. My wingman and I (DVII) managed to get turns on one of SE's and hammer him quit a bit. On the fifth turn I jammed a gun and lost numbers on turn 6 so it was up to my wingman. Kurt came through and light wounded JB. JB failed his consciousness check next round and spun into the ground (4/0 pilot I think), his wingman decided to escape and with numbers it wasn't hard.

Third mission of the night was same teams in May of 17 with Alb DIII's Vs. SE 5's. On this mission I took up Lt. Krupp (16/1) . This may be the first time he has performed to his Ace potential. In his last two missions he missed a total of 5 shots out of 5! Here the Se's were in trouble from the start with them losing turns to at least one of the dirty Huns each turn. Again JB was the victim. and on the 3rd turn was Crit Wounded and crashed. This was a 0/0 pilot. Although AP lost initiative the next two turns in a row he was able to use his straight speed to avoid much damage and make my last shot a 500 foot. On the 3rd turn he won initiative and decided to escape.

The final game of the night was again Aug of 1918, with big block Camels (AP, and Me) Vs. a DVII(Kurt) and a Pfalz XII(JB). I believe JB was on his 11th mission. Kurt was hammered by both camels for 2 turns staight and continually climbed towards the clouds. On turn 2 I had a scare with a No Effect pilot hit on me by JB. On the 4th turn with a minor crit to his engine Kurt choose the better part of valor and went into the clouds never to return. Next turn JB did the same and our night was done.

As always it was a great night with a great bunch of guys. Next week I am going to ping a couple of BGG members who have said they would play DP if they had the chance and see if we can get 6.

Thread: Re: Dawn Patrol Spring Con

We have a suite booked for the wife and kids! limits my time playing but is a fun trip for the whole family.

Also here is all the info:

2008 DAWN PATROL Spring Mini-Con

Milwaukee, Wisconsin
March 28-30th

It’s the FIGHT IN THE SKIES Society’s most popular event, by far. It’s a tradition that just keeps growing in fun and legend. An entire weekend of DAWN PATROL where the lead is hot and the zingers even hotter. For the second year in a row the Spring Mini Con will be held at The Holiday Inn Express in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Located just a few miles south of the airport and just off of I-94 makes it a convenient place for all our traveling friends.

They come from near and far, the best and most dedicated players in the DAWN PATROL world, to do battle for the weekend. They know this is where a common bond is formed and new friendships are forged either in the heat of battle or perhaps in the post game revelry, where tales of daring and heroism are relived and enjoyed anew. It’s just about the most fun you can have playing DAWN PATROL, and everyone who comes to the Spring Mini Con knows it firsthand.

This year the action begins at 10am on Friday, March 28th with the ceremonial tossing of the first dice, and then the aerial battles begin. Playing goes ‘til midnight, sometimes longer, but it’s all just a warm-up for . . .

Saturday—the liveliest day of the society’s biggest annual gathering. Non-stop missions, from early morning to late at night. Medals won, aces lost, cheers and jeers heard across the room, the slapping of high-fives, and everything else that makes this more than just a board game. And what an experience it is!!!

At 2 o’clock it’s time for . . . THE BIG GAME. How can you describe it to anyone who’s never flown in it? Multiple flights, unknown objectives. A board that covers three tables. More planes in the air than you can keep track of. Some above, some below, some who knows where. Think you’ve had your hands full in an eight player game? Try four times that and then some. It just doesn’t get any better than this! Any true FITS enthusiast will be excited at the chance to win glory, and maybe even a medal.

How do you follow something like that? The Masters Game. This bi-annual invitational championship will be held Sunday morning at 9 a.m. With the coveted silver trophy on the line the competition is sure to be fierce.

Everyone at the convention will be eligible for the Total Points Championship. This two game event allows everyone to put up two of their scores from pre-selected games. The highest and lowest total wins. There will be prizes galore. And look for other special events at the Con.

Truly, this convention has something for everyone! It’s the highlight of the year for dedicated players, so come join us this year and count yourself among them.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

FRIDAY MARCH 28th: 10:00 a.m. Ceremonial Tossing of the First Dice

Remainder of Day Open gaming

SATURDAY MARCH 29th: 9:30 a.m, Masters Play-in Game (for non-invitees)

2:00 p.m. The “BIG GAME”

SUNDAY MARCH 30th: 9:00 a.m. The Masters game

4:00 p.m. Awards Ceremony

Convention Rates: Member: $30/weekend Non-member: $40/weekend

$25/Fri & Sat $30/Fri & Sat

$15/Fri or Sat $20/Fri or Sat

$10/Sun only $15/Sun only

There will be an additional charge of $10 for the Masters participants.

NOTE: There is no pre-registration charge for this event.
VASSAL is an online boardgame program. You can find it at www.vassalengine.org. It is the only one I've ever used (just out of laziness though, I'm sure the others are also good) and I think it is pretty cool! Definitely check it out!

Hello,

I recently purchased a copy off e-bay that was supposedly complete - except for the aircraft counters. I thought that was ok, since I really just wanted the rules and charts to play on VASSAL. To my chagrin, my "new" copy is also missing the aircraft stat cards. I've looked on several of the Dawn Patrol group websites but was unable to find this info. If anyone has this information that I can use that would be great! Thanks in advance.

Herman

I just bought Dawn Patrol on eBay, and I've only read the basic rules. I also own Wings of War. Someone else could give you a better perspective than I can, probably, but I'll give my impressions.

Dawn Patrol is square-grid-based, which means you're going to have to plot out moves, using the maneuver rules in DP, as a matter of squares. In WoW, of course, you don't need to do that; WoW is also, in some ways, less precise because of its "analog" nature.

DP is, I'd say, aimed more at trying to be a simulation than WoW. For one thing, altitude is a critical component of DP, whereas it's optional in WoW. There are just more rules with DP overall. Does that make it a richer game? I'm not sure, having not played it, but it's definitely heavier. One nice thing about DP is the community. WoW has a nice community, too, but you can play DP online via VASSAL, and there are various groups who've kept DP alive over a quarter-century. (Of course, we're also trying to get a WoW PBeM started at the Yahoo! group for WoW (although I think the registration's closed for the first game), so maybe we'll build up a bit more of a community for WoW, too.

all that said, copies of DP are surprisingly inexpensive still. Mine was $12, and while it was missing a couple of counters, which can be replaced pretty easily, everything else was in real good shape.

Thread: VASSAL Dawn Patrol - Thursday Night & E-mail Games

For the last month, we have successfully been running Dawn Patrol games online using VASSAL (www.vassalengine.org) once or twice a week.

Thursday nights are developing into a regular evening that works for the majority of players. If you're interested in playing online, I would encourage you to log in to the Vassal site at 8:30pm CST. We welcome new players, and usually have at least one new player each time we sit down. The only preparation necessary is to have downloaded the most recent Dawn Patrol module from the Vassal website. There are two versions on the site - the current module is v1.2.

We are also running an e-mail game, with a second e-mail game in the works, and the last two weekends have seen a pair of games on Sunday.

For more information on VASSAL Dawn Patrol, feel free to contact me, or go to www.indysquadron.com or www.dawnpatrol.org, each of which has a forum with a dedicated VDP section.

frieque wrote:
I've been helping with the updating of the Vassal Dawn Patrol module for playing Dawn Patrol online. As part of that project, I've created a couple hundred new counters for planes in the 7th edition rules, plus pretty much all of the other ww1 front line planes for creating new plane charts and scenarios. If you're interested in new counters, let me know and I can send you a copy once I have them in a good format for printing (will be a few weeks).

Also, if you're interested in playing the game online, we've been running games on the Vassal system 1-2 times/week since early April and usually have 4-5 players. For more information, check out the forums at indysquadron.com.

I would be interested in the new counters, yes. Thanks.

The possibility for VASSAL play is what got me interested (well, I was already interested in the subject, but I mean Dawn Patrol in particular). I know of the IndySquadron site. I'll look into it more once I've had a chance to look at the rules a bit.

Thread: Cards/charts count?

I just picked up a copy of a (c)1982 box of Dawn Patrol. Most everything's in pretty good shape. I am missing three plane counters (a D.H.4 with an "M" on it; another D.H.4 with a red splotch on the right wing; and a Fokker D VIII that's virtually indistinguishible from another D VIII). I'm guessing it shouldn't be too hard to come up with some make-dos here if need be. (If anyone's got a tip, I wouldn't mind hearing it.)

I'm more in the way of wondering about the cards and charts. There's a very sketchy inventory in the instructions. Everything sort of comes out to a decent-seeming multiple, but if anyone knows the number of cards and the chart pages, I'd appreciate knowing.

Thread: Re: On-line game Sunday April 15th

I was one of the participants in Sunday's game, which turned into Sunday's game and a half. This was the second weekend in a row that we managed to get together a full game, and I find that the games are settling into a nice rhythm as everyone gets used to playing on Vassal.

Sounds like we may not be able to get a game together for the upcoming weekend, due to a real-life game of Dawn Patrol (Red Baron Fight XVIII in Indianapolis) taking away two of the four players that were online for the games on both April 8th and 15th. However, I would encourage any interested players to either contact Rex or myself, or log onto the Vassal server Sunday morning. I expect I will be checking in on the server about 11am CST. It usually takes a while for everyone to get the module installed and running, so the game should start about 11:30 if we have enough players.

Thread: Re: Annual Fight in the Skies Weekend

Hidden damage is when the pilot rolls damage on himself secretly.

1. Roll to hit by firing pilot (die roll is public)
2. Roll for number of hits by firing pilot (die roll is hidden)
3. Firing pilot informs target of result, "You take 5 from the tail."
4. Firing pilot rolls for each of the five hits exact location. (rolls are public)
5. Firing pilot rolls for pilot/observer hits (rolls are public)
7. Target checks for crits (rolls are hidden)
8. Target informs the table of any visible effects

The way the rules are written, item 4 had been a public roll and that's my preference. The firing pilot rolls the damage on the pilot. There's been a growing preference among some players to make item 4 hidden and rolled by the target. The problem for me has been that I'm amazingly effective at shooting myself down using this method.

Thread: Annual Fight in the Skies Weekend

Each year the Fight in the Skies Society gets together for a weekend of FITS (Dawn Patrol). This year that weekend was March 30 - April 1 in Milwaukee, WI. We took over a Holiday Inn Express just south of the airport. The hotel is inexpensive, has a great meeting room we got for the whole weekend, and it has a free airport shuttle for those driving in. This year we had around 30 players.

Warming Up FRIDAY
I arrived just after noon on Friday and the gaming had already begun with the noon ceremonial throwing of the first dice. Already in the room were players from WI, MI, AZ, and WA. I took off for lunch with my friends Dennis & Dan.

After lunch, we joined the festivities getting a second table going.

Mission 1
I flew a SPAD VII. Great, a 1-gun wonder in May of 1918. Nothing good can come of this. On turn two I jammed my one gun on a long burst. I escaped having inflicted 4 hits and taking none. Not a good beginning.

Mission 2
Using the "new" mission charts I rolled a Hansa-Brandenburg C1 on a photo recon mission. For some reason my Hansa-Brandenburg C1 counter is missing! We quickly drove off the opponents and my pictures were taken. I scored 6 damage and took none.

Probably my funniest line of the weekend was the start of Mission 2. Using the new charts we rolled that we completed our mission before the dogfight. I hate this rule. The drama is in fighting to complete the mission or stop its completion. "I don't like that rule, so I changed it," got a combination of scoffs and laughs.

My modified rule:
1-2 2d6*10 away from target (Board Length Max)
3-4 1d6*10 away from target
5-6 1-20 squares from target

Mission 3
This is why I hate hidden damage. I took 8 hits on turn 1. I rolled 3 engine hits and one FF hit, which became a pilot hit. The pilot hit was a critical wound. Luckily I was only at 3,450 feet in my SE5a. I dove two turns to 450' and landed from there. I rolled an 01! A perfect landing! I also rolled for survival and avoided incapacitation. My 7/1 SE pilot will fly again at 8/1.

Mission 4
Italian Front, I fly my Phonix D1 and get to the 9th turn this time. I inflict 26 damage and take only 10. Scott flies off even thought I've hit him for 22 damage.

Mission 5
I fly my best pilot, Adj. Wee, a super-ace flying the French SPAD XIII. The other side quickly figures out that I'm dealing death when I utter the trademarked line, "You must be the bullet," when rolling for pilot hits. One wingman is shot down, the other flees, but I keep winning initiative with -2 pip modifier. I deal 41 damage, take 14 and only manage to wound an observer. As soon as I lose initiative, I escape combat.

Mission 6
Shot down! My Italian Hanriot HD1 pilot got hosed. I took 41 damage, 5 criticals, and lost my left wing. For one brief moment I thought I was going to escape when really shot up, but it was not to be. I would have gotten to roll for one more turn if I hadn't taken 1 damage from a fabric tear!

That was the end of the flying for Friday. I got in 6 missions, lunch and dinner out with friends, lost one pilot, and scored no kills. Not so great.

SATURDAY

[whine]In the morning I was at a huge disadvantage. I'm still on West Coast time. A mission kicking off before 9 a.m. Central time is damn early.[/whine]

Mission 7
What an incredibly bad mission. I'm flying a Bristol 190 in late 1917. On the first turn I jam my front gun and my rear gun is blown off with a critical hit. Back at my home base, the single crit causes me to crash. Both crewman survive.

Mission 8
The bad luck continues. On turn one my Fokker DVII takes 4 engine hits and crit 1/2....my engine is on fire. Amazingly, I have a parachute AND I have the altitude to use it AND I'm over my own lines. This NEVER happens. Sensing it's meant to be, I bail out. The parachute WORKS! My 2/0 pilot will fly again!

Mission 9
The Big Game. About 20 players get into a fight over the front, with the Germans and British trying to take a bridge in September 1917. I get a Bristol 190 again. They've replaced the rear gun. I score 4 hits and miss 3 shots...yuck. Obviously my biorythms are out of whack. The good news is that I destory 4 MG's and 2 AA's with bombs. Every MG is worth 2 points and every AA 4. The bad news is that 3 bombs miss and each miss is worth -6. I discuss with Mike Carr the need to change the scoring chart given the "new" bombing rules. The British win the mission.

Mission 10
An uneventful mission. I fly a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter in a very short 3-turn game.

Dinner!!
The highlight of the weekend. Nine of us go to Mader's in downtown Milwaukee for German beer and traditional food. We've reserved the Richthofen table. We're told the Red Baron really ate at this table when it was at his family's estate. Wow!

Best selling author and game designer Troy Dennning joins us to talk about old times. My gun isn't jamming, my engine isn't on fire, and I don't dribble my beer...much. It's my best luck of the weekend. The beer is GREAT, as is my appetizer, the sausage and cheese plate. I'd joined the Mader's mailing list, which got me 4 x $10 off coupons via email! Nice!

Mission 11--Final Saturday Mission
I'm a little drunk for this one, luckily. I'm flying a British DH9 and I still hate hidden damage. I take 9 hits total and put 5 in my engine. My pilot also takes a no effect wound. I take a very serious engine crit and must flee. Back at base the wound causes me to crash, killing my observer, who was 5/0.

So far my luck is horrible. I've lost 2 airmen, and I have not shot down a single enemy.

SUNDAY
Mission 12
The Society Open
Nothing good happens. I start out strong, dishing out 17 damage on the first 3 turns. I chase John, who is jammed in a left bank, but he clears the jam after two turns. I'm left out of the combat for 5 turns...aghhh.. I get back in for 3 more shots, score only 9 and jam a gun...again. I end up with a positive score, but nothing good. The guys from AZ made a clean sweep in the scoring.

I had a great time. George and Jennifer did a great job hosting. Mike Carr delivered perfect rulings and ran a good Open. It was great to have Dennis, Mark, and Dan all at one weekend. I think it's the first time we've done that in at least 5 years. Jim Barber did not play slowly, contrary to popular rumor.

Rules Notes:
1. Change mission location roll
2. Reprint "new" rules for tailing the circle in Aerodrome.
3. Get "new" ammo load outs and Al's reloading chart reprinted in Aerodrome
4. Change mission scoring--I've actually made a new scoring method, but Mike hasn't blessed it. Bombs misses should only be -1, not -6, and then only if launched with an overall positive modifier.
5. BAN HIDDEN DAMAGE
