Thread: Re: User Review

Oh I love the Kobayashi Maru game. It's one of my favourite solitaire games. I actually beat it once, but most of the time I got annihilated. It's a fairly simple game, but for me that's part of its charm. You can pretty much pick it up and play without much more than a quick glance at the rules. I still have this game in my collection after 20 years - I used to play it when I was in my early 20s - so long ago.

Thread: Sherwood syndrome table on the map

I tried to read the table writtend on the map of "The Sherwood Syndrome" module.

Please, is there anybody that can confirm and complete it?

N:	Held. Squad does nothing.

MT:	Move towards town. Squad moves torwards nearest town, castle or palace.

MN:	Move to Nerarest rebel.	If squad's space contains your people se the result after the slash. Otherwise move squad to neaerst space containing your people.

ME:	Move to nearest space containing only rebels. If the squad's space contains your people use the result after the slash. Otherwise the squad moves to the nearest space containing your people which does not contains already a squad. If every space containing your people contains a squad treat this as "MN".

DS:	??? Search. Roll a die. If 4 or less your people have been found. (die-roll modifier +2 for towns and forests. -1 for roads, bridges and fields). Pay a gold piece for each of your people in the space. If you cannot those for which you don't pay are imprisoned.

S:	Search.	Roll a die. Add 2 in forest. If the modified die roll is less than or equal to the Royal Morale index, your people have been found and must flee (see the Flight Tables).

IS:	Intensive Search. Roll a die and add 2 if is a forest. If the modified die roll is less than or equal to the Witchcraft index, your people have been found. They must fight. Roll again add one person's raid value (Also add Kirk's, Lord Marocain's and/or Master Pinter's raid values if present). If you roll 10 + they escape but two (your choice) are injuried. Otherwise all are imprisoned.

FS:	Furios Search.	Your people in the space are imprisoned.

AN:	Arrest Neutral.	If the space contains a neutral when you do not control, he is imprisoned. If not "ME/IS"

R:	Rampage. The squad kills and torture indiscriminately in an effort to find rebels. Royal morale drops none. Your people in the space are imprisoned and injuried (even if in a sanctuary).

Thanka anyway.

Thread: User Review

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, you'd trip over several Star Trek-based titles (boardgames, RPGs, and CCGs) when you stepped through the door of your local game store. Now...Not so much.

When West End and FASA had the license, they did a decent job of publishing a variety of different board game titles, from "pick your own plot" (Star Trek: The Adventure) to another starship combat game (Starship Tactical Combat Simulator). One of the best was Star Trek III, which was three, three, three games in one--but only one was worth playing. All three were solitaire, however, so STIII was, at least, a nod to the realities of the hobby: not everyone can find an opponent for every game they want to play.

The duds were "The Sherwood Syndrome," so execrable that it doesn't bear description, and a trading game where you race the Klingons from planet to planet to amass the most money. (My memory is a bit hazy on this one, so forgive me if I get any details wrong--I seem to remember something to do with the Organian peace treaty, a la The Trouble with Tribbles, but I can't say for sure.)

The real game in this box was The Kobayashi Maru. Imagine the drool level of the Trekkies--sorry, Trekkers--who opened the box, punched out the counters, and tried to do better against the unbeatable scenario than Kirk did. (Since he cheated by reprogramming the simulator, I guess you'd have to cheat by re-rolling the dice to beat the system.) The game threw a random assortment of "blips" at you as you tried to rescue the crew of the imperiled freighter. Sometimes, the blips were nothing to worry about; other times, you faced the wrath of a trio of Klingon warships, all hungry for Kirk kebab.

The ship display let you control various systems by moving counters to represent shields, hull, weapons, and the like. The KM part of STIII was simple to learn, very challenging without seeming impossible, and fairly fun. The games in STIII had an excellent pedigree, having been designed by Greg Costikyan, Doug Kaufman, and John Ford.

Overall, should you buy this long out-of-print game, if you saw it at a convention flea market or eBay? Only if you're a rabid Star Trek fan, and you absolutely must add a boardgame version of the Kobayashi Maru to your collection. It's an interesting diversion, but there are better pencil-and-paper games to play for starship combat (like Full Thrust), and good Star Trek games on the PC (like the Starfleet Command series).
