Thread: PRO rules: Paris - Nice (2008)

Paris – Nice (2008)

Pol: France (blue) and Italy (green)
Ruben: Benelux (pink) and Spain (black)

Neutrals: Other nationalities (red)

Stages

1. Nevers – Belleville [128 squares; ± 1¼ hour]
C – D – ▲E – B – C – D – A – B – C
* energy cards: 1 / 2 / 1 / 1 // 2 [total: 7]
* time limit: 4 minutes

2. Montélimar – Mont Ventoux [128 squares; ± 1½ hour]
A – B – C – D – A – B – C – D – ▲F [Mont Ventoux]
* energy cards: 3 / 1 / 1 / 2 // 0 [total: 7]
* time limit: 5 minutes
* finish on top of a mountain (no sprint)

3. Sisteron – Cannes [146 squares; ± 1½ hour]
C+ – D – ▲E – B – C – ▲G – D – ▲E – B – C
* energy cards: 2 / 1 / 1 / 2 // 1 [total: 7]

1st stage

The first stage is the flattest out of three, with only one climb early on in the race. It’s the Spanish climber Manuel Garate who rushes forward at the top of the hill to take the points for the King of the Mountains classification. Nobody in the pack feels strong enough to join him in a long break-away. The peloton doesn’t react immediately, so his advances quickly reaches a full minute. However, once the peloton is up to speed, Garate cannot hold his advance for very long. The sprinters are preparing for the first rush of the day. It’s Vicente Reynes from Spain who takes the 5 points for the green jersey. There aren’t many attacks – most riders want to save energy for tomorrow, when they will have to climb the terrible Mont Ventoux.

Halfway the stage, two riders must let go of the peloton after a nasty fall: the Italian leader Rebellin and future polka-dot jersey Garate. At the front of the race, the second rush is again won by Reynes. He seems sure to wear the green jersey tomorrow and has good hopes of winning the first stage, since he’s obviously the fastest man today. But not everybody is happy with the perspective of a mass sprint: Fränck Schleck and Damiano Cunego give the pack a slip with less than 20 km to go. Unfortunately for them, they are quickly taken in by the Spanish team, working for their sprinter.
While the sprinters are positioning themselves for the final sprint, Christophe Moreau breaks away on the other side of the road and takes a significant lead. The sprinters’ team mates fail to bridge the gap, so Moreau wins the stage with a 30 seconds advance on the pack.
Behind him, Reynes wins his third sprint of the day, just before Gilbert, Hushovd and Pineau. The unfortunate Rebellin and Garate arrive more than 2 minutes after stage winner Moreau.
The latter is the first yellow jersey, Reynes will be wearing green and Garate is in the lead for the King of the Mountains classification.

2nd stage

The second stage is the most important one for the riders aiming at the general classification, for the finish is at the top of the Mont Ventoux, also known as the ‘Giant of the Provence’. The race will initially go over flat plains, all the way up to the foot of the final climb.

The peloton quietly advances to the first rush of the day, easily won by green jersey Reynes, who comforts his lead in the points classification.
Shortly after, he falls victim to a puncture. In his absence, the second rush is won by his rival Jérôme Pineau. With the Mont Ventoux getting nearer, the race gets more nervous. The helpers bring the leaders to the front of the pack, where everybody is now struggling for position. On the Ventoux, the first attack is launched by the yellow jersey himself! Moreau is countered by the polka-dotted Garate. Halfway, as some more riders join to the two leaders, a small group of favourites has formed. On the last and steepest sections of the climb, Luis-Leon Sanchez attacks with all his might. Only three riders manage to stay in his wheel: the young Pierre Rolland, his leader Chavanel and the talented Geesink. The others must let go and will lose significant time today. At the top of the Ventoux, Sanchez has distanced his closest rivals by a handfull of seconds. Rolland finishes second, before Geesink and Chavanel. Rebellin, still feeling sore from yesterday’s fall, comes in fifth one minute behind Sanchez, whereas outsider Evans loses over a minute and a half. Green jersey Reynes finishes last and ‘hors-delais’ at exactly 6 minutes.
Sanchez takes over the yellow jersey with a 18 second lead to Rolland, while Geesink follows at a mere 30 seconds. The green jersey is still for Reynes, who is almost certain to win the points classification. The battle for the polka-dotted jersey will be fought in the next stage, which counts as many as three hills. Yellow jersey Sanchez is also King of the Mountains, but the polka-dotted jersey will be worn by Rolland, who’s second at only 2 points.

3rd stage

The final stage is hills from start to finish. Several teams will have to attack if they want to win back time on leader Sanchez, and that’s what they do: on the first hill, Fränk Schleck and Rinaldo Nocentini break away. The latter is a threat to the yellow jersey, since he’s at only 1.05 from Sanchez.

At first the Spanish team doesn’t react, but when Rolland, Schleck and Rebellin also spint ahead to catch up with the leaders, Sanchez decides to attack as well. So a group of favourites sprints for the bonifications: Sanchez wins another precious 5 seconds. The leading group begins the second climb with a slight advance on the peloton, where the neutral riders do all the work.

Then there’s a crucial moment in the race: yellow jersey
Sanchez has a puncture. His rivals don’t wait for him and continue the break-away. Suddenly, the Spanish team has to work hard in pursuit of the escapees. They catch up just before the top and an almost complete pack rushes down the descend. On the third and final hill, Cunego attacks. At the top, he has a half a minute advance on the pack, lead by Rolland, who manages to win enough points to claim the title of King of the Mountains.

Cunego is taken back at the end of the descend, where Geesink launches an ultimate attack for both the stage win and the general classification. Again, the Spanish team has to rally all its forces in order to bridge the gap. This they won’t manage, so a surprisingly strong Geesink wins the third stage. Unfortunately for him, his advance isn’t sufficient to bring him final victory. At only 12 seconds, Pineau wins the sprint of the pack, before Reynes and Cunego.
The overall winner is Sanchez. Rolland ends at 20 seconds and Geesink at 23. Reynes, the fastest sprinter, wins the points classification. Rolland is a well-deserved King of the Mountains.

Final results

Yellow jersey:
1. Luis-Leon Sanchez (Spain)
2. Pierre Rolland (France), + 0.20
3. Robert Geesink (Benelux), + 0.23

Green jersey:
1. Vicente Reynes (Spain), 31
2. Jérôme Pineau (France), 25
3. Pierre Rolland (France), 21

Polka-dot jersey:
1. Pierre Rolland (France), 19
2. Alexander Efimkin (Russia), 13
3. Luis-Leon Sanchez (Spain), 12

Team classification:
1. France
2. Italy, + 2.25
3. Benelux, + 4.15

Stage winners:
1. Christophe Moreau (France)
2. Luis-Leon Sanchez (Spain)
3. Robert Geesink (Benelux)
Thread: Re: PRO rules

I ran through a quick, flat-course, game today and really like the improved aspiration rules. The peleton stayed together the whole game, with two riders able to breakaway on the last turn to take the first places. I'm looking forward to playing with a more complicated course and using some of the other changes more thoroughly.

Thread: Spelverslag ENECO Tour 2008

C - D – (klim) E – B – C* – D – A* – kasseien – B – C (bonificatiesprints bij *)

A – B – C* – D – (klim) E – B – C* – D – A (bonificatiesprints bij *)

Einduitslagen

Gele trui:
1. Chavanel (cof)
2. Kirchen (h-r), op 1.06
3. Monfort (cof), op 1.18

Groene trui:
1. Cavendish (h-r), 26
2. Duque (cof), 16
3. Chavanel (cof), 15

Bolletjestrui:
1. Kirchen (h-r), 35
2. Kohl (ger), 33
3. Bettini (qst), 31

Ploegenklassement:
1. Gerolsteiner
2. Cofidis
3. High Road

Etappewinnaars:
1. Cavendish (h-r)
2. Chavanel (cof)
3. Bettini (qst)
This means you can either roll two die or use one energy card and roll one die.

The cases A, B and C you have stated above do not apply.

A: when alone, you can use an energy card to catch up to riders ahead, or maintain your lead if you are already ahead of the other riders.

B: The group of riders behind you do not have to follow you if they dont want to, but they can draft you without having to roll the dice or use energy cards. There are specific rules as to whether riders can draft or not. I think this is what may be confusing you.

C: To jump out of a group which is called a Breakaway in the English rules, the rider MUST announce the move as a breakaway move and use at least one energy card and the riders behind cannot draft. (See B above) The other riders can however, choose to roll the dice or use their own energy cards to keep up to the rider trying to breakaway.

Each energy card can only be used by the rider whose number is printed on the card, and some cards cannot be used in the mountains. (The ones with the mountain shield)

Basically all the energy cards do is provide you with definite movement values rather than the randomness of the dice. The skill is in deciding when to use them and with which riders. Get your riders with the mountain cards to use them going up the mountains and your flat land riders draft behind them.

I suggest that you download the English rules from the file section. I'm assuming of course that you are okay with English. Your post certainly reads very well.

Um Reifenbreite is a great game with lots of tactics and bluff.

I hope this helps.
You can always play energy cards (as long as you have appropriate energy cards, of course).

If you have people tailing you, you may announce a break-away when using energy cards; in that case nobody may follow you. (But it is also allowed not to announce a break-away, in which case the others may follow.)

Uphill you may only play Energy Cards that do not have the no-mountain symbol.

On cobblestones you may only play a single Energy Card, not two.

I've found starting from either start location and doing one lap around and finishing at the line just after chosen start location makes for a good race. I like to include both mountains as the riders really start to crack on that second mountain.

Also, we play with a modified Yellow Jersey rule (I can't remember if it was my translated version of the rules or if I saw it here), but after the first sprint line the leader gets the yellow jersey and gets 2 points for every turn they stay out in front. On any other turn, if a leader is in front then they get the Yellow Jersey and the points.

Thread: Re: When does the race end?

Keep in mind that the four races that come with the original rules are pretty much examples. The metioned Paris-Roubaix race is pretty much a get into the game race. If you want to develop your own races (longer, shorter), the board is open for it. If you wanted to, you could even go ten rounds around the board. Now, ten rounds is a little bit too much, but two rounds around the board is still playable. The thing is that for every about 50 squares you race, the game gets half an hour longer, so two rounds around the board will cost you about an hour and a half.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your guidance with the end game rules. I guess I'm used to car and horse racing games where several laps are in order, and I thought the Tour de France would be somewhat longer.

I did find the yellow jersey rule embedded in the Advanced or Professional rules, so I think I understand that.

But, I would not have guessed that the routes would end so quickly -- thanks for clarifying that for me.

Does the race end when we cross A for the first time? That takes less than 15 minutes for 4 players. It seems to me the game should go longer, like 3 or 4 times around the track, but I can't find that in the rules.

Also, in the English translation I have there is no mention of what qualifies for a yellow shirt. It would seem to me that the leader at the end of a lap would claim the yellow shirt, but I don't see that in the rules either.

So does the race go more than one lap, and if so, how many laps? And who gets the yellow shirt and when?

Thanks!

For the route you describe, the race will end when you cross the A line. Bear in mind, some of the short routes only have you using half the power cards. Also, this is a great game to play linked races. Do a bunch of the short races in an evening. Keep a tabulation of each team's score, and the overall winner will be the team with the grandest sum. The lengthier courses do take a bit longer, but will still leave time for more gaming. Definitely stop when crossing the final line described for a route. Multiple laps would really seriously alter the game design.

Yellow jersey... I'm too lazy to go grab my rules, but I recall it is who eer wins the first sprint. If he wins the next sprint he gets a bonus; and so on.

Great game, one of my favorites.

Kevin

Thread: Quickie translation question (from German) if anyone can help

I have managed to match up the German cards with the translation in the game supplied from the game shop.

I cannot match one – it reads :-

~Sie schalten in einen hoheren gang. Der Fahrer zieht vier Felder zusatzlich vor~

I assume the last part reads move forward 4 additional spaces but was not sure of the first bit. On google it translates to something similar to “They turn in a larger gang !!”

Just out of interest really. Anyone know what this translates into?

Thanks,
Mike

PS – There were two more Germans cards than translations. The first is the one above – the other one reads :-

I assume it reads similar to the following which is an English card I have seen somewhere.

“The heat makes it difficult for you to ride. You are totally exhausted. The rider cannot move in this round.”

Answer to chance card questions:
2.1 No.My rules say this is not allowed.
2.2 Yes.That is what my rules say.
2.3 While this is not really mentioned in the rules we play that if someone is drafting and a chance card allows extra spaces we let the drafting riders follow unless the card states it is not allowed(like in your example). This seems to be the intent as some cards say it and others don't.But you could play this either way just make sure the players know how you are playing before the game starts not after the card is drawn.
2.4 Well the last line of the chace card rules section says:"If a player must discard an energy card and he has no more with his number then he MUST discard a joker energy card.If he has no joker cards left then he does not have to discard a card.If a rider does not lose his turn because of the card then he moves normally".The rules would seem to indicate for this card you would lose the 4 bonus spaces if you cannot discard an energy card. Also to answer the second part of your question the card says you must discard an energy card so if you have a card then you have to discard it.If you wanted to go less than the 4 extra spaces that is always allowed as the rider can move less than his full movement as per the normal rules.
Thread: A handful of questions, please

I am ashamed to admit I have not played this game for what must be 15 years. I originally came across it at a Manorcon (probably in 1993) and enjoyed a game of it there but did not play it after that (I think I found the original HT translation a bit difficult in places).

Anyway, dusted it down a few weeks back and found a much better translation so am eager to try it with out group again. Still have a couple of questions so can I ask the wise old sages on here for their opinion:-

1) When a rider dismounts on a hill, the translation I have says (in two different parts of the same rule) that he is replaced on either a space behind or a space parallel if his original space occupied. Do people just play that he goes on the first available space in the same lane behind the original space?

2) The rest is to do with interpretation of the chance cards:

2.1) If a player "receives a new energy card" do you let him take a joker if none of his specific energy cards have previously been spent (I am assuming he can usually only receive back a card he has previously used earlier in the race).

2.2) Similarly, if he is required to discard an Energy card then assume he has to discard a joker if all of his have already been spent.

2.3) If a rider ".......goes two additional spaces forward. No other riders may follow" - is this restriction on drafting for the entire move or just for the two additional spaces?

2.4) In relation to the card where "You overestimate your strength. The rider goes 4 additional spaces forward - but he must discard an Energy card". If he has no Energy card (or joker), I assume he just loses this bonus move. I assume if he has a bonus card he MUST take this bonus move?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Mike

As far as my German skills go, it translates as follows:

You cause a heavy fall! This will cost you some strength!

The fallen Rider may not move in this round. He must also give up
one of his energy cards. All of the other Riders who also fall because
of this are not allowed to move for this round (but keep their cards).

The only difference between this card and the normal "fall" card is the loss of an action card.

N.
Last time I played we used the second option, dont remember did we find it straight from the german or from the translation (some cards had wierd or wrong english translations (at least the gust of wind type card had some problems), at least on the sheet we had printed for the game, dont know about the current file. Later also sounds more thematic.. as the player coming from behind would crash as well to the big pile . Crashing all players to theyre spots would sound wierd. This is truly a great game.

Thread: Which action card to use?

I just received Um Reifenbreite in a trade and printed out english action card translation labels from the file posted by N. Petry (thanks N. Petry!). The file gives the option to print ONE of TWO "Mass Fall" cards. The two cards are:

"You cause a mass fall! The rider falls and doesn't move this turn. Because the fall costs strength, he must discard one of his energy cards. All riders who haven't moved yet also fall and cannot move this turn".

AND

"You cause a mass fall! The rider falls and doesn't move this turn. Because the fall costs strength, he must discard one of his energy cards. Also, any rider that moves past him this turn falls, and must stop moving immediately".

Which of these cards actually came with the game? And I need opinions, from those who have played the game, as to which card they prefer in order to help me make up my mind regarding which card to go with (I can't use them both as I am applying lables over the actual cards that came with the game so I only have enough cards to use one).

Go to the Um Reifenbreite page and scroll about 2/3 the way down the page. Under the "Files" section there are two different files for english translations for the cards. Just print them out on label paper, cut them out, and stick them on the cards. I just got the game as well, through a trade, and applied the labels. It worked great!

Thread: Re: Chance card variant.

We've eliminated the chance cards altogether. We felt they detracted from the feel of the game.

Here's how we play: whenever someone rolls a 7, he re-rolls one die. If he hits a 1 on that die, he falls (possibly leading to the fall of other riders, per normal rules). Otherwise, nothing happens.

We've been happily playing like this for years and we don't miss the chance cards one bit.

Thread: Re: Drafting and Turn Order

Does a drafting bike follow the bike it is drafting as soon as that bike moves

Yes, as does every other bike in the chain. Which is to say every bike that is behind another bike that has just drafted the active bike has a choice to draft, but only if the bike before drafted (and only if it is in the same type of road surface IIRC). So the chain of drafting riders ignore the usual turn order.

Another ramification of this is a case where three of my team members are in line, and two of your riders are inline behind the my third bike. I may opt for the third biker *not* to draft behind his two team mates, thus cutting your guys off the chain. This can be especially useful in the sprint to the finish.

Drafting is one of the elements that makes this game so fun and evocative of cycling.

Enjoy the game - it's a classic for a reason!

Hi All, Bagged a copy of this game at Essen this year.

When drafting - the rules say that a bike that starts its turn directly behind another may draft them (if the circumstances are correct).

Turn order is the bike in front and from Right to Left if tied.

Does a drafting bike follow the bike it is drafting as soon as that bike moves, or does the drafting bike have to wait until its turn in the turn order is reached and then remember that it was drafting and who ?

Cheers

Thread: Re: Sprints: where do they stop and start please?

The sprints end at the "finish lines" located at the letter of the sprint currently being run.

So on the Giro d'Italia the first sprint is to "D" and is run from the start of the race to the finish line at "D". The first three racers over that line are awarded the appropriate bonus points and the first racer across is given the yellow jersey.

The second sprint is to the finish line at "A" and begins as soon as the racers have finished the first sprint. Award the yellow shirt and appropriate bonus points and begin the final sprint to the finish line at "B".

Note that the bonus points for the sprints vary based on which sprint is being run.

The race itself ends at the finish line located at "C".

Hope this helps.

Joe
