Tuxhedoh wrote:
I'm semi-familiar with the game, played Limited Edition for a bit, but not long. Recently I bought 2 Theme decks and played with them a bit.... now I have been given a large number of cards, I've not yet made it through the majority of them, but realized I really didn't know how I should proceed...

How should I sort/organize the cards to figure out what I have? Sets?Colors? I started with just colors.... then read something that said it'd be better to start with blocks.

Help me figure out what to do.

The way that I organize my cards so that I can find them is by set. That's definitely the easiest way to find a card. If you forget what set a certain card is from, you can look it up in no time. Also, card legality is based on sets. For example, as I write this, the Extended format is everything from the set Invasion and subsequent. So, by sets.

And then within each set, probably by color and then by name. (That happens to be "collector number" order anyway.)

As to whether you should sell them or not, whenever you're not sure, the answer is no. The simple fact is that most people do not get what they should for cards. This is especially true if you sell to a store that has a buy list. So, whenever you're not sure, don't sell.

Once you know what sets your cards are from, it'll be a lot easier for people to tell you what might be worth money. For example, if after you sorted your cards, you told me you had a bunch of cards from Alliances, my next question would be whether any of them are Force of Wills. On the other hand, if you said none of them were from Alliances, I wouldn't have to bother to ask that. You see? So knowing what sets you have cards from will be a huge help.

Thread: Re: Inherited 3000+ cards... what now?

As has been said, it really depends.
However, if you're planning on doing a cube draft (my favorite way to play), then I'd sort by Block>Set>Nothing (in boxes) as it's easier to mix and match.
If you're needing to pull specific cards out of your collection, then actually Block>Set>Collector's Number would be easiest. If you need to browse them for casual constructed play then Color>Type>Mana Cost is easiest. I don't recommend that though, if you need to look for cards from a specific edition, then it's a real pain.
I'd personally recommend either the Block>Set in boxes (that's how I have my cards organized, or i would if i didn't use 100% proxies), or a Block>Set>Color>Type>Mana Cost sort. (With the types being Creature, Instant, Sorcery, Artifact (although Artifacts will generally end up in their own color category), Enchantment (I'd also separate this into Auras (Enchant Creature ect.), and nonbasic land (again, their own color category).

Thread: Re: Inherited 3000+ cards... what now?

It depends.

If you just want to make random decks with them and you are just starting out, then go with color first. One color decks are easy to make, and will let you figure out how the game goes. If you don't understand an ability, skip the card: there are way too many abilities to learn at first.

For collecting and competitive play, set goes first. That way cards are grouped logically over the years, it's easier to see what you are missing, and you can skip cards that are illegal in a certain tournament's format.
Separate into colors > Sort each color into sets > sort each color of one set by it's number in the set?

Does that sound OK? I'm not all that sure myself, but that's what I did with my 1500+ LOTR cards.

I play MTGO. V3 has kept my playing/purchasing to a minimum lately.

I play tournament level Classic and Casual Prismatic. And leagues...but they won't be running again for a few months :(

If anybody is up for a game, look me up: mullaccm

-steve

The interface when I played was fine. That was back in the beta, where the cards were free and the girls were pretty. Why in the world did they rewrite it?

The reasons I didn't even consider playing after the beta was the pricing structure. I never paid full price for real magic cards, so why do so for the digital equivalent?

Thread: Re: MTGO? Who plays online?

MTGO has gotten consistently worse over the last few years. Besides the horrible interface that is V3.0, the quality of players has severely dropped. I cashed out my cards 2 years ago, and got over $1000 for them. Best move I made. I still break out the paper cards every once in a while with friends for casual fun games, but MTGO has really soured me on the game in general.

Hands down this is the worst investment you can make, and you will learn to loath the people in the common room. The only feature that made me consider staying was the multi-player room which still had a semblance of etiquette and comradeship.

I've just started playing on MTGO. I'll probably play casually.

If anyone wants to find me for a game, I'm there under the ID fuggles.

Chris
I don't see why you can't grab some friends and play with theme decks only.

Limited magic is the best form - compete with limited resources, rather than wallets.

WotC imported the idea of Wallet Raping[tm] from England. Games Workshop/Citadel prototyped the concept with the original Warhammer fantasy battles rules in 1983, though they didn't really perfect it until a few years later. WotC merely refined the idea until it became the model of efficiency and an industry "best practice"--sort of the Lean Six Sigma of money pits. :p
