That's why the expansion characters are there-
replace assasins, and thieves, etc. with "nicer" characers.

Peepser wrote:
I agree. I was intrigued with a solitaire version, but I have no idea what he's talking about here: "...Then you reveal two card to yourself. Then you get two more cards to choose a character for you (this can be modified by King, see below). Then you reveal one more card (two remaining stay face down)."

I read it as:

:d10-1: Deal 1 card face down as the character for FOE:

:d10-2::d10-3: You look at the next two cards and discard them (simply gathering knowledge here as to what character the FOE isn't)

:d10-4::d10-5: You deal two cards to yourself, look at them, choose one of the two to be your character.

:d10-6: Look at the next card (again gathering info)

:d10-7::d10-8: The final two cards get discarded without you seeing them.

But I'm kind of confused by the dealing.

Urtur wrote:

* At the beginning of each turn you shuffle the character deck and place one character card face down for FOE. Then you reveal one more card (two remaining stay face down).

I'm not sure I quite get the order of how you do what to the cards. Could you please try explaining this again maybe with an example. :(

Thanks.

I agree. I was intrigued with a solitaire version, but I have no idea what he's talking about here: "...Then you reveal two card to yourself. Then you get two more cards to choose a character for you (this can be modified by King, see below). Then you reveal one more card (two remaining stay face down)."

How do I get two of my 'cards' to choose a character for me? They're cards. They can't choose anything.

Even if my cards had the brains to pick a character for me, I still don't understand the rest. You take 2 character cards? Then you take another two? Then you reveal another one? Why not just say 'Take 5 character cards.' And then what? Pick one of the five? Pick two of the five? So many questions, so little clarity.

Thread: Re: So your 4-years old wants to play Citadels with you...

My 5 y.o. son plays with us eventually. The only problem is that he becomes upset when we steal or kill him. So we ruled that he is what we call in Brazil "Cafe com Leite" (Coffee and Milk, a very beginner) and cannot be killed or have his money stolen... Everything else is just the same. It kind of makes the game more boring, but it works...

Thread: Re: Learning curve

This game had a longer learning curve for me than most. Usually I pick up games quickly.

One problem was I thought it would be similar to other card/building/role-selection games like [GAMEID=8217]. I thought success would come largely through building good buildings that work together and picking the roles that work with them. In fact it doesn't matter that much what you build in this game. Almost everything has the same cost/points ratio (1:1), and most buildings don't do much of anything but earn you an extra gold on certain roles. You can't hold out for a particular building you want, and there wouldn't be much point anyway.

Also, it's critically important to predict what other people will do in the game. You can't really do that until you know what you're doing. So in my early games I'd do things like build 1-cost districts, only to have them immediately knocked down by the warlord, and pick the role that obviously the guy who was winning would want to pick, and end up getting assassinated while in last place.

So I would say it takes a few games before you can play well. It's not so many that it's a burden to learn. My point is just not to give up on it if you don't dig it on the first few games.

Thread: Re: why does the Magician steal from a player instead of a character?

ackmondual wrote:
1) even though a Magician can steal a whoop-load of cards at once, accumulating the $$ to build 'em will take MANY turns to do so

Yes. I think 1 gold is worth more than 1 card. You need both to build your buildings, but usually you need more than 1 gold to build 1 card. If it had the same limitation of not know if you'd get anything that the Thief has, and what you get even if you do get anything is less valuable, it wouldn't be a very desirable role.

ackmondual wrote:
2) The target player still gets cards if the Magician has some, since it's a trade and not outright theft. It's probably rarer that a Magician and his target will have such a difference of cards

Actually, I think that's the best use of the Magician: when you have no cards it's a fast way to get some. But this is only usable in particular situations, whereas the you can still use the Thief to your advantage even when you start with a lot of gold. If you would only select the role in limited situations, and it's unsure of success, and as discussed above what you get is not the most valuable, it would really be an unpopular role.

Thread: Re: Citadels or Vampire?

I have both. Vampire Prince of the city is a board game where you try to control areas. the more of an area you control the more influence you get to control stuff. no cheracter selection except at start. uses cards and dice. only good for long games with many people. Citadels is very fun with 3 or more people. choose a new charecter each round depending on what you want to do, . play cards from hand to built your city. quick games.
