Thread: A Thrift Store Find...But Is It Worth Buying?

Hmmm, is this game even worth spending any of your hard earned cash to buy it at a Thrift Store? This is my attempt to help you answer that. The bulk of this review gives an overall sense of game play, without too many rule details. The last couple of paragraphs gives you my bottom line thoughts on this game. I hope it helps.

Personal Preference is played with two teams. The game calls for at least four players, with two per side. However, larger groups are easily accommodated. Since this game is about guessing personal preferences, it usually helps if those playing know each other. The game is much more luck driven and far less interesting when played with strangers.

There are four Preference Categories in the game: 1. Food & Drink”, 2. Activities, 3. People and 4. Potpourri. The category for each round is determined by the placement of a team token when it stops on the track running around the outside of the board. Once a category is chosen, four random cards are drawn from the corresponding preference box. These are placed face up on the board, one in each of the four coloured sections of the board (red, blue, yellow, green).

These face up cards may read: Jazz (randomly placed in the red section), Reclining chairs (yellow section), Shopping malls (green section), and Saturday Night Live (blue section). The person who is “It” now secretly determines his preferences using four special “Preference Cards” – one in each of the corresponding colours. If he/she likes “Reclining chairs” over “Saturday Night Live” then the yellow card preference card is placed on top of the blue one. This is done until all four are in order of preference. Once all four colour coded cards are in order, they are placed in a Secret Envelope.

Now the fun begins…so to speak. Each team, including “It’s” own team, tries to guess the order of preference based on their own perceptions of “It”. (Discussions are usually interesting as members of the team argue their point as to why “It” likes Brussels Sprouts over Classical Music, for example.) Each team indicates its guess by placing a numbered token on the coloured game board sections. For example, if they feel the persons first preference is Saturday Night Live, their #1 token would be placed in the blue section (the one holding that card). The token with the number #2 would be placed in section holding the card of their second preference guess, etc. Again, this is done by both teams.

Once all four numbered tokens from both teams have been placed, “It” opens the secret envelope and reveals his/her own personal preferences. This is done one by one beginning with the most preferred subject. Correct guesses advance a team token one space. Incorrect guesses are not penalized.

There is one other twist in scoring and tile placement. If a team is feeling confident in a particular guess, they may double that guess by placing their tile in the centre circle of the board. Each correct doubled guess advances a team token forward two spaces. Each incorrect (doubled) guess moves them back one. The team first to the “finish” on the track wins.

The game itself is simple and has some potential for fun. The game components themselves are poor. The cards are cheap and low quality. Also, most of the preference cards contain a photo of an object. However, all the cards from the “People” category box are hand drawn attempts at portraits. While it works and does not affect game play, it looks tacky. The game itself would look better if the cards were uniform. That aside, the game is so-so. I have to admit we have had some fun with it, with the right group. But with the wrong group, guessing becomes just that – a random shot in the dark. If the game continues in this manner there is little point in playing. Teams must know each other to a degree for this game to have any play value. And even then there is no real strategy; you are always at the mercy of your ability to guess correctly.

In the end if you don't like 'party games' save your money. If your open to them, this might be worth a couple bucks (at most) for a few short lived laughs with some good friends.
