So, bye to all!

Alex/Desal

Thread: Italians burst on BGG

>Jon: When the Italians burst onto BGG, it was during a time of controversy about shills using BGG to boost their own games. The sudden arrival of a lot of Italian users at once (often on the same day), and the high ratings they gave to Italian games (Warangel was a good example) made people very suspicious. Where did they all come from?

Ciao Jon.
I answer about Warangel, due you signale it as a good example of
"Italians burst on BGG".
Warangel Italian first edition, is of 1996.
Thanks to a a National distribution, the game was known and appreciated by many Italian gamers who contacted me 12 years ago, to go on with the realization of the expansions races.
On 2000 it was awarded Best Italian Game at LuccaGames, our greatest luding fair, and in Bologna, Milano, Acqui.
On 2002 (six years after first edition and two years after the awards) I found BGG and te page here of Warangel, when the game here were only 490.
At that time very few italian gamers knew BGG.
I signaled BGG to the gamers who wrote me in that time about the game.
That's why in a short time arrived many comments from Italy, many about Warangel.
Thanks to my personal communication of BGG, many new gamers, now well known in Italy and not only in Italy, started to know this optimal website.
Many of them are now organizers of Fairs in Italy, writes articles for
national and international luding websites, they are well known and appreciated as gamers and persons.
About Warangel, is a light wargame now 12 years old, still requested with the new wooden, prepainted, ready to play materials, of
"Create YOUR Warangel"
interested new gamers find plenty of pictures on
www.warangel.it.

About deep reviews in proper english here on BGG:
Tom Vasel about the 2000 edition
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/6905
Rich Partin about the last
"Create YOUR Warangel" edition.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/215997

I am glad that thanks to new materials and the customer service I give to every gamer-friend who contacts me, latest gamers in 2008 still appreciate this simple system of wargame with their comments and ratings not different from the 10s, 9s, 8s... that arrived when Warangel page was published on BGG, many years ago.

Thank you Jon: first BGG user who met me at Essen many years ago and that now will probably partecipate in one Next Italian Luding Con 2008, invited by Angelo
http://warangel.it/08e.htm
I personally realize PhotoReport since 2000 of all Cons and Organizations that host me, trying to put in contact people around the world, the best I can.

Thanks, see you at next Con
Angelo Porazzi
>Hi Angelo (and anyone else who likes to help!)

Ciao Al
Just returned from Essen, see my PhotoReport Here:
http://warangel.it/ES7.htm
BOL and Sacaraball sold out, an US distribution for LovePigs

>I played another game of this recently after quite a break, it was a very even fight and we ended up taking over each others home lands completely, then having to travel back to our own land and reconquer it to win!
I won as Centaurs vs Chelates.

My compliments: a speedy race against a really tough race is not easy at all: BRAVO!

>I have a couple of questions:
Q1: Ranged attacks, these must be in a straight line, does that mean they must follow hex faces

Correct. Along a straight line.

>Q2: Is it legal to move to an occupied fortress, hit on the run (killing the occupant), move in conquering and garrisoning it, use the points to generate a creature (back from the dead), carry on moving out of the fortress with the original creature.

Warriors that has the special action HIT IN MOVEMENT may do for example: move adjacent to a Fortress, defeat the Garrison, enter the Fortress.

Then, in the same turn, like any other warrior, use the Resource Points inside the town to recover a dead and move the recovered piece.
HIT in MOVEMENT means:
move - hit - move.
not:
move - hit - move - do something - move.... too much

>Q3: Oceans (again) Do the chelates or centaurs map have any ocean squares (except the black wavy line right on the edge of the map - I'm having real trouble telling water from ocean.

Consider this: all Maps of 1st, 2nd , 3rd Generation DO NOT have inner oceans.
Inner Oceans born with 4th Generation's maps, to offer To Abyssals (4th Generation) and other "Ocean Specialized" Warriors, new tactics. Maps from 4th Generation and after have a ligher blue for Water and deeper blue for Ocean, to easily reknow them.

>Q4: Charge (again) when charging is it only the final few hexes that matter (for Unicorns the final 3 for example) in terms of them being "plains" terrain

Correct.

>e.g. I move into position for a straight charge, to get into position I move through plains, woods, woods, then charge down three tiles, plains, plains, plains. Is that a legal charge ?

Absolutely legal, correct.

>If your whole move must be on plains, does that count the square you are on at the start of your turn too?
e.g. I start in woods then move straight down at an enemy plains, plains, plains, attack - is that a legal charge since I started in woods (but my last three hexes were in plains).

Your last three are on plains so it is a legal charge.

>Thanks in advance!

You are welcome. It is a pleasure to stay in contact with polite persons like you

Thread: Ranged attack question, garrison question.

Hi Angelo (and anyone else who likes to help!) I played another game of this recently after quite a break, it was a very even fight and we ended up taking over each others home lands completely, then having to travel back to our own land and reconquer it to win!

I won as Centaurs vs Chelates.

I have a couple of questions:

Q1: Ranged attacks, these must be in a straight line, does that mean they must follow hex faces so they can shoot out down 6 different lines of fire? Or is there complete freedom about the angle you fire at so you don't follow the hex faces (in this case it would seem there would be lots of arguments about line of sight and needing to use string or something to check line of sight).

Q2: Is it legal to move to an occupied fortress, hit on the run (killing the occupant), move in conquering and garrisoning it, use the points to generate a creature (back from the dead), carry on moving out of the fortress with the original creature.

Based on the rules that seems legal since it doesn't say you must end your movement in order to garrison.

Q3: Oceans (again) Do the chelates or centaurs map have any ocean squares (except the black wavy line right on the edge of the map - I'm having real trouble telling water from ocean.

Thanks in advance!
Thread: Review of Create YOUR Warangel
I own the Create YOUR Warangel edition of this epic fantasy war game by Angelo Porazzi.

With this edition, one can request their favorite "races" (armies) and maps from among the 11 generations and 110 different warrior races—80 of which are translated and available in English. These races come on pre-painted wooden blocks. One can also order maps especially designed for each race. These maps illustrate real sectors of the Earth, such as the Caribbean, Japan, the Western U.S., Greece, and so on.

I currently own 13 races and maps for each race (beautifully illustrated by Mr. Porazzi).

By July of 2007 I had played the game 8 times and felt as though I was getting a handle on the rules. After playing a half dozen times by myself and contacting Mr. Porazzi for a few rules interpretations, I got my 8-year-old to play. This game is rated for 12 years and older, but with some explaining and help here and there, he caught on pretty fast and liked it--especially when his "Ghosts" beat my "Barbarians."

Game Play

To set up, each player chooses an army (Race) and takes its Reference Sheet and counters. Then choose a map for your army. Set up a screen between the two maps so each player can place his armies and fortresses secretly. Armies have varying numbers of warriors, usually between 30 and 45.

The first player to place all his warriors and fortresses on his map moves first. On his turn he can move as many of his warriors as he wishes, and, depending on placement, conduct battles.

Warriors are rated for Power (fighting), Vitality (defense), Movement, and specializations (any particular fighting or defensive abilities, including various physical or mental weapons). Examples of physical weapons include flying, jumping, blocking Blue Holes, transporting, crawling, and dragging. There are mental weapons such as transforming or enchanting opponents, or infiltrating through their ranks. Examples of armies include: Barbarians, Amphibians, Egyptians, Goblins, Giants, Ultrasonics, and Gorgons.

Each army has a Master and 4 other units, ranging from the powerful Dominant caste, to two Intermediate castes, to the basic Infantry caste. You start the game with the number of warriors indicated on the “Warriors” rating for each of the five types of units for that particular race. All races have only 1 Master. Each reference sheet tells you the particular abilities of each type of warrior for that race.

Each map matches a sector of the Earth and is like an island surrounded by a radioactive ocean that can be trespassed only by warriors with an Ocean specialization. Maps have various terrains, with their own particular effects. These include Plains, Savannahs, Mountains, Ice, Lava, Deserts, Radioactive Clouds, Woods, Water, Volcanoes and Chasms. Ocean comprises the borders of each map.

Blue Holes are the only passages that connect maps. Each map has 10 Blue Holes and has a corresponding Hole on all other maps.

Each race gets 7 fortresses, which are placed in their owner’s territory, with at least 6 hexes between each. Players secretly place under each fortress a Resource Point counter (worth 1-3 points each, for a total of 10). Once placed, the fortresses remain in place for the duration of that particular game (battle). Players also place one warrior under each fortress as a garrison. The defensive rating of a Garrison is plus one.

To conquer a fortress you have to eliminate the enemy Garrison and the move your warrior into the fortress, taking control of the Resource Points of that fortress. To control a fortress you must have a Garrison in it; otherwise you can’t count the Resource Points in your total toward the 12 you need for Victory. By conquering enemy fortresses, players can also reclaim warriors previously lost in battle.

Winning and Strategy

Your army starts with 10 points—the total value of 7 fortresses—and you must get 12 points to win. That doesn't sound that hard, but your Victory Point total reflects the number of fortresses you hold at the END of your turn.

There are five 1-pt. forts, one worth 2 points, and one worth 3. Since set-up is done using a screen, you've no way of knowing where your opponent places his fortresses. Also, one warrior goes under each fortress and constitutes its "Garrison," which gives it additional attack and defense ratings. So one has to choose carefully how powerful a warrior he wants to Garrison his fort. For example, you can lose one of your own fortresses on your opponent's turn, but come right back and re-conquer your fortress or conquer one of his to get back Victory Points. Thus, 12 points isn't that easy to reach and hold.

Each army has different strengths and weaknesses, and on the whole they are extremely well balanced. As I play more I am learning more about how best to defend and attack. Suffice to say there's a lot to learn to become good at this game, and with the variety of armies and maps available, replay is just about unlimited. In time I can see buying more maps as well as wooden blocks to mount counters on, because the different-colored wooden blocks make it easier to distinguish sides.

General notes

I rewrote the basic rules into 6 single-sided pages for my own understanding, checking with Mr. Porazzi on some points. The artwork and overall creativity and time and play-testing that must have gone into this game is jaw-dropping. As with all of his games, Mr. Porazzi’s whimsical illustrations add to the fun of playing.

As of early September 2007, I've played the game several more times with my 8-year-old, using many of the races I own. I feel like we've gotten a pretty good handle on the game system now, so we don't have to constantly be referring to the reference sheets, rules, and so on.

In fact, recently, my 13-year-old son was listening to us play a game, and asked if we could teach him. Obviously it sounded like we were having a good time (which we were), and it’s always fun to bring in a new player for “Warangel,” a game that invites an individual approach to game play.

Conclusion

This is one of those games that just suits me well. I like the variety of races and maps, which are beautifully illustrated. I feel like at this point I have virtually unlimited combinations of playing possibilities, interactions, strategies, and so on.

I give this game a rating of “9” on the BoardGameGeek scale, meaning it’s an excellent game and (within reason) I always want to play it. With more time and experience I imagine that rating will climb to the lofty “10”: ‘Always want to play and expect this will never change.’ My only other expectation is that in another year or so I’ll be ready to add other favorite races and their corresponding maps. In the meantime my 8-year-old is suggesting that once we’ve played all the races we have and know what each can do, we organize a league and keep track of wins and losses and see who’s the real champion. Capital idea!

To me a "9" rating means that this is a game I naturally like to play a lot, and expect to keep playing as far as I can foresee. Of all Mr. Porazzi’s games thus far, the Create YOUR Warangel edition is his magnum opus. It's not only a keeper; it's in the very top rank of my game collection.

--Rick Partin

Thread: Re: Upgrading my components

I can just quote.

There is no match between "old", cardboard-like pieces and the new materials of "Create your Warangel".
Even the most skeptical of my friends (he's *a bit* fussy when judging the materials of every game) said that now the look of Warangel is great.

Wooden pieces are very elegant on the maps, as illustrations are still very evocative (here's my personal opinion, of course).

Every race is well "framed inside the scene", the story is a good mix of war, mysticism, and evolution (or involution). Tactics are quick to learn but hard to master, and that, for me, is absolutely the strong side of the game: I played it with children, and with my 30-years old friends.
Lot of fun in both circumstances.

In the last ten years, this game was improved and bettered a lot, specially in materials. Angelo uses to take hints, costructive opinions and ideas of many players: a good way to stay in tune with them.
For any doubt about balancing, materials, gameplay, background, there is just one advice: try this game with its last version "Create your Warangel".
Here in Italy we can meet Angelo in many Cons but also English section of website describes this idea with plenty of pictures.
Then, make me know.

That's all.

Glory to the Mother!

Iz
Alien Master

Thread: Upgrading my components

I've been looking to upgrade the components of my Warangel set, so it will see more play. For instance, laminating the maps so that they no longer soak up spilled soda

My question is, has anyone found wooden blocks of a suitable size for mounting warangel chits anywhere in the US (including online)? I know that Angelo used to have some available on his website, but its just too expensive to pay to have generic wooden blocks shipped from Italy. Similarly, re-buying all the armies I have as pre-mounted wooden counters would cost hundreds of dollars, and just isn't an option.

Does anyone know of maybe a craft store where I could buy appropriately sized blocks (square, round, it doesn't matter) in bulk? Any other US players of Warangel modify/upgrade the components of their set?

Thanks Angelo, for such a thorough answer. With 7-, 12-, and 13-year-old boys, I think the board game would be the best choice for me.

I also like what you said about involving kids in playing and rating games, especially the latter and paying attention to what they say. If nothing else, they're certainly honest. I had already taught my older boys the basic version of "Peacebowl," and they like it a lot. Two nights ago I taught the basic game to my 7-year-old. He didn't much like it when, after he scored a 1-point touchdown to a sideline to take a 1-0 lead, I picked up all the cards. He didn't want to part with what he thought were good ones. But he soon got over that disappointment when on the next round he found a warrior open in the endzone for a 3-point scoring pass. On the ensuing round he again played the Pass Card for a long score, finishing off Dad 7-0. (Of course, on the third round I didn't have the heart to play my "Steal Ball" or "Wild Card," but it's in my long-term interest to let him win the first time or two out so that he's excited about playing.)

Yesterday morning when I drove him to school he started trash-talking me and telling me how he's going to beat me next time by playing the Pass Card again. And this morning when I drove him to school and he was about to get out of the car, he suddently looked back and me and said, "I'm going to beat your butt with a Fly-12!" (Anyone who's played the game knows what he's referring to, and the little so-and-so has only played it once.)

Man, I get no respect!

--Rick P.

Thread: Re: question for Angelo about two versions of "Warangel"

Ciao Rick,
thank to you for your interest and for reading here on BGG and on my website about these two games.
For other users and love of clearest communication: latest version is
Warangel 10 Years Edition,
published in 2006 and is described here on BGG
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/490
Warangel Card Game
was distributed by Hasbro Italy in 2002 and is described here on BGG
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/7088

And now I try my best english in answering your question

> I'm curious to hear your own assessment of the two versions and I'd like your opinion about why you created the two versions,

Warangel is now a "universo" with a quite long story: this year, to celebrate first 10 years of this game, was published first book, and different versions of the game was published.
So to understand "why" I created them, is necessary a little of background.
As most interested gamers in Warangel already know, this game borns as collectible issues in 1996.
Game was distributed in newspapers stands and reached thousands of italian gamers.
Their feedback in requesting next Generations was simply enthusiastic.
So on 2000 I decided to selproduce first boxed edition of Warangel (Warangel 2000) that was awarded as Best Italian Game 2000 in Ludex Bologna, LuccaGames (our greatest luding fair), Milano Games and AcquiComics.
Right in my booth at Lucca 2001 I received visit of people working for Hasbro Italy.
They said that illustrations and characters in the game where gorgeous but the hexed maps and the wargame mood of Warangel 2000 was "too much" for Italian Great Distribution - Mass Market of that time.
They were interested in a complete card game with same character and basic values of Warangel warriors.
The target was children 6 years and up, as wrote on Warangel Card Game box, so I studied a very simple rulesheet spllitted in three levels to allows also younger gamers learning numbers, to enter this fantasy universo.
Great distribution in Italy does not offers "gamers' games" but just children games or easy party games.
In Italy Games are still considered "things for children" and so mass market games must be studied for children basically.
Our market is still very young and in these 10 years I did all my best to let this italian gaming world groove in culture and knoweledge. The golden plate I received at latest ModCon06 says it all
So in 2002 I realized from A to Z the Warangel Card Game that was first italian selfproduced game, created and illustrated by same author, distributed by Hasbro Italy.
You can imagine my emotion seeing that homemadegame on their catalogue:
http://warangel.it/cards.html

Year after year Warangel received lots of new ideas in races and in contacts from out of Italy gamers.
At Essen 2004 I premiered Generations of Warangel translated in my bad english with small reference sheets.
To me was an enormous work.
Many good gamer friends from Austria, Germany, South Africa, US, England, Australia, Korea, begun helping me in re-writing these Reference Sheets and I followed the hints received on BGG, making these new Reference Sheets larger, in A4 format.
Now at Essen 2006 (next week, I am preparing all my games) I am ready with Warangel 10 Yares Edition that has inside the box A4 Reference Sheets of 1st Generaton.
Now are also ready all races in English of 2nd, 3rd and 4th Generations in A4 format.
Some races of 5th and 6th Generations are ready too in English and A4 format (Immortals, Egyptians, Indians...) and will be premiered at Essen with their own Hexed Maps representing real sectors of Earth, another enormous work but really interesting: I learn a lot in Gography.
That's the short why I realized the Warangel Card Game Hasbro and the Warangel 10 Years Edition.
Because I love create and illustate games and I'm honoured this game please both children and gamers.
I do my best to satisfy all this kinds of gamers that show interest in what I love to do.

>which one you might recommend if I were to buy one or the other.

They are two different games, in the same fantasy universo, but with two different goals-targets.
Warangel Card Game Hasbro is a mass market product 6 years and up.
For feedback I received, and from comments here on BGG, I see it is appreciated by dads with children, families with young gamers, perfect if they are learning numbers. It is very good to let the children paragone the numbers, know the warriors, their weapons, their abilities. Artwork is at same level of a standard Generation expansion of Warangel.
Indeed Warangel Card Game, illustrates races of 8th Generation and you could read cards to use these warriors on Warangel hexed maps too.
Anyway, to perfectly satisfy Warangel 10 Years Editions Gamers I already realized 8th Generation's Races Reference Sheets in standard A4 format.

About my idea of Warangel 10 Years Edition
I found an excellent idea, that I will also introduce at EssenSpiel this year, "Create YOUR Warangel" I illustrated on my website www.warangel.it with all splitted prices to let each gamer choose his own favourite race, from any Generation, to have "ready to play" races mounted on painted woodenbocks at 10 euro each, if they like this solution.
At recent italians cons and fairs I see that this idea is really appreciated due gamers can SEE and CHOOSE the races they like most.
A gamer now can take the complete base game and add, for example, Chelates of 2nd Generation and Diamonds of 4th Generation.
Taking these races mounted on the round, painted woodenblocks that was maybe best upgrade of this game in these 10 Years. Gamer may see and choose any single Map, for example takes Tigri and Euphrate's Iraq map of Chelates of SouthAfrican mountains of Diamonds' Race.
SEE and CHOOSE, that is why I love to partecipate cons.
Because I can know people interested in my games and they can SEE and CHOOSE what they like.
Warangel offers a wide variety of races and maps, all hand illustrated: I think that this variety and artwork are the best plus of the game.
The 10 Years Edition rulebook is all laminated, protected in plastic A4 copybook, to perfectly collect Reference Sheets of the Base Box and Reference Sheets of other Generations you may pick up at your choice.
Rules are simple, to allow dads to play with their children of about 8-12 years old to play with them.
To allow 30 yo gamers play with their girlfriends.
This is what I see at latest Italian Tournament in ModCon06.
Simple means simple, not stupid, in fact the Tournaments are always won by the gamers with the greatest experience in the game.
I see that the more you play Warangel, the more you know the different races, the more you get able to "read" the game in any situation, against any other race or any other gamer.
Gamer counts a lot in the game due each single race can be played as offensive or defensive, each gamer interpretate the same race in different way and this is great to me that see the same race played in different Tournament by different players in very different ways.
In 10 years I never seen the same battle.
And honestly when I play it or see play it at my Tournaments I always enjoy a lot.

Answering your question: which I would recommend?
I can describe them as best as I can, here and on my website, then it is up to you, age of your children, flavour of your gaming group, choose what you like

>For example, the cards in the card version are very familiar to me from having "Peacebowl," but the block playing pieces and artwork from the board game version also have the stamp of your style.

Yes I understand it very well: many gamers write me same thing and I appreciate your kind feedback.
Shure "the stamp of my style" both in writing and in illustrating is present in all of my games.
Either the ones with Fantasy Illustrations like Warangel or the ones with Cartoon-Fun illustrations like PeaceBowl you mentioned, or TATATA!. Some illustrator told me that best synthesis of my style is reached in latest WrestAngel illustrations where I realized warriors in comic style buth with great attention to proportions and movements.
Honestly I give to artwork and style, "soul" in each game, the main importance. I mean not only in my games.
When I see a game that clearly shows up an own style and character, that is a game that keeps my attention and always has something good inside. And in time.

>Thanks for your time,
Rick

Thank to you Rick, you all are welcome
Essen Fair 06 is near: 19-22 october
If you like to know me and my games "live", you are welcome at botth 9-28, it is a great occasion to meet and know each other.
Ciao!
Angelo Porazzi
Thread: question for Angelo about two versions of "Warangel"

I've taken some time to read about "Warangel," including the board game
and card versions, both on Angelo's website and on BGG. I'm curious to hear Angelo's assessment of the two versions and I'd like his opinion about why he created the two versions, and which one he might recommend if I or others were to buy one or the other. For example, the cards in the card version are very familiar to me from having "Peacebowl," but the block playing pieces and artwork from the board game version also have the stamp of Angelo's style.

Thanks,

Rick P.

Thread: Re: Warangel 10 Years Edition--stats for other 10 races?

Ciao Bill
Read at page 11 of Warangel 10 Years Edition rulebook and you'll find explanation.
The Box contains the 10 armies of 1st Generation, complete of precut laminated counters and reference sheets.
10 complete races, as wrote on the box.
Plus, as a bonus, contains the races of 4th Generation presented in 1998 WarBeast, a boxed game that has different kind of "stand up" counters and contains the reference sheets for those races.
In this edition I decided to gift these 10 races with precut laminated counters, so gamers who own the old Warbeast boxed game may try them on hexed maps of new Warangel.
Due Warangel 10 Years Edition offers the adaptation rules Warangel- Warbeast.
If you do not have the old Warbeast, I realized the Reference Sheets of 4th Generation in A4 format, just like the 1st Generation Reference Sheets you have in Warangel 10 Years Edition.
You can request any single element of the game (single reference Sheets of any Generation, Ready to play Tournament Races already mounted on painted woodenblocks) on website
www.warangel.it
in section
Create YOUR Warangel.
For any question feel free to contact me directly or through BGG, I'll answer at my best.
Thank for your interest in my home made games
See you in Essen06, booth 9-28
Angelo Porazzi

Thread: Warangel 10 Years Edition--stats for other 10 races?

I just picked up Waragnel 10 Years Edition. The rulebook has one page on each 1st generation creature, and all the counters for 1st gen. and 4th gen. creatures. But why no data sheets on the 4th Gen. creatures? Or is my rulebook defective? Why give counters without the data sheets? I'm pretty confused. Can any one clue me in?
Cheers,
Bill

Dear friends of BGG
I'm glad to announce that
first Book about 10 years old boardgame Warangel, will be published by Rose and Poison and presented at LuccaGames 2006.
Here is the New on KaosOnLine magazine

http://www.kaosonline.it/kaos.asp?s=44&k=1&id=2094

The book, now, is in italian and the title is
Warangel I Primi Ricordi
"Warangel First Memories"
a "trip" along evolution in different warriors, memories of battles lived in different bodies, step by step up to reach the role of a Warangel.
On the link you can see the illustration cover of this book that I realized 20 years ago in 1986. The very first illustration of this universo. In the year of 10th anniversary of this multy awarded boardgame, this book is a great gift to me: I hope many readers, gamers and friends who knew me and my work along these years, will appreciate.
Thanks
Angelo Porazzi

Thread: Re: Question about number of actions...

>Hmmm, how do you counter Chelates. I introduced another new friend to this and I usually play as Saurians but to make it fair I played a race that was new to me. I see that Chelates have no transports or ranged weapons but even so they seemed very, very powerful.

Ciao Al
just back from GimAgioke' a brand new gaming Con in Fano where organizers invited me to celebrate their first edition. Take a look on www.warangel.it, just click on 2006 an see how many cons and tournaments, plenty of occasions to meet and play together.
About your question (thanks Gunther for signaling it to me), yes you see well: Chelates are incredibly strong in close combat but are with no transport and no ranged weapons. You already analized their "strong side" and "weak side". If you get close to them you just make their game. Use ranged weapons if you have them, they do not have. Use superior movement if you have, to move around them and be the first to attack the most isolated warriors. Use Mental weapons if you have them: Chelartes have a great exoscheleton perfect to protect from Physical Weapon but useless if you hit them with Mental Weapons. They do have strond sides but they do have weak sides too, like all races in Warangel.

>Often I would be able to charge into lots of his units, hold (or group hold) weaker units to kill them (1 vitality) then sting medium units to death next to me, then team up and group attack a bigger unit to death (for the loss of maybe one unit on the counter attack).
My friend was quite discouraged by how strong they were. I'll urge him to try again and use a different race, but I have to say on first sight they do seem very, very strong.
My friend was playing as centaurs by the way.

As you wrote, your friend at his first battle was using Centaurs of 1st Generation, while you was using Chelates of 2nd Generation, after a bit of experience of play.
As you noted Chelates have many Special Actions that request a good experience to be managed at best.
My hint to master the game to new friend is to use armies of 1st Generation that are quite "basic". The more you go on with next Generations you find armies not "stronger" but that have more actions concentrated on single warriors. That's why many Tournament Races of latest Generations have almost half the pieces of a Tournament Races of older Generations to balance them.
My hint Centaurs vs Chelates is: use Sagittaries with their incredible 8 hexes ranged arrows to eliminate first Skorpions of enemy army. Chelates have NO ranged weapons, this is a great advantage for Centaurs.
Do not face them in deserts where they can hyde under sand surface. Concentrate your warriors on fortresses far away from desert.
Centaurs have much more movement than Chelates, Centaurs may jump,an action that is not to be understimated. Place your fortresses near plains where you can charge and devast any raid; use chasms, rivers, lava rivers as natural obstacles. You can jump them, Cheates may not move accross a chasm. I understand that in close combat Chelates are superior to many races but they do fight and activate their weapons only in close combat. So decimate them with ranged weapons, using mental weapons if you have, and most of all avoid to assault fortresses on deserts.
Ciao! Angelo

Thread: Re: Question about number of actions...

Angelo's already answered, so I'll just add this: if you can actually just play one action OR the other, this is very clearly noted on the race sheets. It will say something like "OR, instead of playing other actions, (warrior) can ..." so if you don't see that phrasing you can safely assume you can, in fact, play one of each action.

As a chelate scorpion can I in my turn:

move, sting a guy, hold a guy then close combat a guy?

Or am I limited to 1 "other" action (non movement, non closecombat action) per turn e.g. in that example would I have to choose to EITHER hold OR sting.

Thanks

Thread: Re: Probably a silly question about controlling fortresses.

>1) If I smaterialise through lava do I take damage? the rules don't say anything about this (that I could see) we played that no you don't) If you DO take damage then how much do you take for smaterialising through a volcano?

You do not take damages when moving as smaterialized, you have no body to be damaged! If you reapper in a lava hex you suffer a flip of 3 Destiny Shields, like all materialized warriors. You can move through a volcano if smaterialized, can't reappear in it: pure energy!

>2) Can I pick up and drop riders on a transport with a pick and let fall attack?, and now the opposite how about the mount but not the rider?

You can pick up one of the two, you declare, the other rests in the hex. All actions act on a single target, like when you hit with any weapon, just declare your target before flipping Destiny Shields.
If an action invests more target like explosive weapons, it is reported on rulesheet.

>3) Can I pick up and drop people in fortresses? Say I can pick up vitality 2 creatures, do I count their base (printed) vitality or their vitality + 1 (for the fortress for a total of 3) when working out if I can pick them up?

Yes and Yes again read my last answer to your question about lift and let fall and my next answer.

>4) Can I infiltrate (stomp) people in a fortress, again do I check against their base power to see if I can do it or their boosted +1 base power?

You can do all you can except mental weapons to a warrior protected in a fortress, always considering his Vitality is upgraded by one.

>5) Can I infiltrate over many people at once, e.g. run over 4 occupied hexes, doing a 1 tile flip of damage to each person?

Yes, if you are a T-Rex This is exactly the Special Ability of T-Rexes.

>6) More charging questions! Can I go in a straight line and end adjacent to my victim, without actually being in a position to run into them if I continued moving to do a charge, or must a charge move end in such a way that if I continued to move one more hex in that straight line I'd be occupying the victim's square.

Charge always requests a "frontal" charge, so target must be "in front of you", the second you say is perfect

>Thanks

To you
Angelo

Thread: Re: charge question and pick up and drop question

>Q1: For charging the last 2 squares at least of a move have to be in a
straight line, right, the whole move doesn't have to be straight to charge.

Ciao Al. Correct.
If the last 2 hexes at least are requested, you can move as you wish but the last two hexes before impact, must be on plain and in straight line toward the target. This is a charge.

>Q2: Assuming Q1 is right and an enmy has 2 plains hexes North of it, I'm next to the enemy off to the right, I move north and enter the northern most plains hex but from the EAST then I move down, is this a charge? We ruled no that for it to be a charge I would have had to enter the hex from the NORTH

Correct. If enemy has two plain hexes in stright line from north, you have to move north and then charge target moving down from the north, moving last 2 hexes in straight line toward the target.

>in the example below W is woods, P is plain, E is enemy, M is me.

Your example scheme is absolutely perfect, great
You perfectly understood what a charge is.

>Q3: Can I pick up and drop someone in a fortress, we ruled yes since it is a physical weapon not a mental weapon. (which seems to be the only
restriction).

Yes you can. Image to be a litte infantryman on the tower of your fortress: a huge Pteranodon arrives, grabs you, lifts you and let you fall. This is possible due you are little and light. If you are a huge ogre defending your fortress the Pteranodon has no the force to lift you up. Pteranodon has the strenght to lift up warriors with Vitality 2 or lower. You remember than when you are in a Fortress your Vitality is upgraded by one. So it is possible to lift up but only light pieces with base vitality of 1, that becomes 2 thanks to fortress upgrade.

>Q4: I move a transport creature (no rider) over mountains, then can I move a ground walking creature through that hex, and will it only cost me 1 (walking over the transport), or 3 for the mountain, or is it illegal? We ruled it was legal and cost 3 for the terrain under the transport.

Gunther answered you perfectly

>Thanks. I'm really liking this game! Threw my first enemy down a chasm with pick up and drop ability, great feeling

Glad you like this game
It offers many different "creative ways" to image battles
About lift and let fall, you should appreciate Harpyes of Sorceresses' army that have the force to lift up warriors with Vitality 3 or lower: Harpyes are outstanding pieces when invading, "moving away" light and medium infantrymen from fortresses, a great action to manage.
Ciao!
Angelo
Ok got it thanks, yeah I meant use up the 'bring back the dead' ability (which can be used only once per fortress, I know this doesn't drain off actual points.

I have some more Q's after todays game:

1) If I smaterialise through lava do I take damage? the rules don't say anything about this (that I could see) we played that no you don't) If you DO take damage then how much do you take for smaterialising through a volcano?

2) Can I pick up and drop riders on a transport with a pick and let fall attack?, and now the opposite how about the mount but not the rider?

3) [Edited since Angelo answered already eslewhere]

4) Can I infiltrate (stomp) people in a fortress, again do I check against their base power to see if I can do it or their boosted +1 base power?

5) Can I infiltrate over many people at once, e.g. run over 4 occupied hexes, doing a 1 tile flip of damage to each person?

6) More charging questions!
Thread: Re: Probably a silly question about controlling fortresses.

Yes, it's true for your own as well. You don't need 12 warriors, though -- the minimum is in fact 6:

your 3pt and 2pt fortress = 5pts
the enemy's 3pt and 2pt fortress = 5pts
plus any 2 1pt fortress = 12pts

However, you misunderstand something: bringing back a warrior does not use up the points.

You must have a warrior in a fortress to control it. I know that's true for enemy fortresses, is it also true for your own?

In that case does that mean that as soon as you go below 12 living warriors (and have used up all captured enemy fortress points to bring back your own troops) the only way you can win is to destroy the enemy completely?

Thanks.

But what about the blue water in maps which is far from the coast (i.e. not adjacent to the coast) are they automatically ocean too, if not then I guess anyone can move through them.
Do any of these maps have an example of 'internal oceans' (i.e. oceans apart from the wavy black line edge):
Chelates map
Centaurs map
Eagles map
Insects map
Ghosts map
Saurians map

Noone of these maps has internal Oceans.
You can recognise Oceans quite well due they have a deep blue different to standard sea blue.

Thank you again for fantastic and fast designer support 10/10 for that!
Thread: Re: Questions after my first game.

>Hi I just played an hour of my first game(didn't finish in that time, but would have finished for sure in another 2 turns), I have some questions:

Ciao Al, you are welcome

1) If in the North East corner of the map I move unit "A" and attack an enemy "X" (3 vitality) getting 1 hit on the shield token, the enemy doesn't die (since I needed 3 hits). Then in the South West coner I do some moves and some other attacks with a few creatures, now I come back to the North East corner and attack enemy "X" with my unit "B" and score 2 hits, Does the enemy unit die since he has taken 3 hits in total on my turn, but not in a group attack. I think the answer is yes, butI want to be sure.

Yes, shure. You sum wounds in your turn, enemy is eliminated. If at the end of your turn a target is wounded but not eliminated, he has all his Vitality restored.

>2) In a group attack does the defender only get to hit back at an attacker of his choice or can he hit back once at every attacker in a group. We played he must choose only 1 attacker to strike back at.

first you said and from rulebook: one of his choice.

>3) If a defender is killed in an attack can he still strike back, or is combat simultaneous (we played it was simultaneous so dead units strike back before being removed).

right, fight is simultaneous

>4) If a defender strikes back and scores 1 hit against my vitality 3 attacker then that hit is forgotten about immediately because it's my turn not the defenders turn. It doesn't add up or stick around, right? We played that it doesn't stick around.

Perfect.

>5) Some of the mountain hexes had ridges drawn into the art that slightly went into the next hex only covering maybe a quarter of the hex or less, so is that hex a mountain or a plain? This question applies to a lot of overlapping art. How do you handle this?

Look-refer at the center of the hex.

>Thanks. I look forward to my next game.

shure

>Another couple:
6) Is it right that I can move a warrior then use a physical attack or ranged attack (or other ability) and then ALSO close combat with him, we played yes, I'm sure this is right.

Shure it is right.
In your turn all your warrior may play all their actions, 1 time per turn.

>7) I seem to remember that woods and mountain hexes hide the occupant from ranged fire, if they are standing in them. and would block fire completely if in a hex between the firer and target, but how about blocking terrain (not hiding terrain) that the victim is standing in, it is not between the firer and victim but will it still block the shot, since he's standing in it, but unhidden.

Hexes that HIDE a warrior placed IN them, are radioactive clouds and woods.
Mountains are obstacles so do not hides if you are over it but only if you are BEHIND it.

>8) Can I move warrior A, then move warrior B and use an ability, then attack with warrior A and come back to B and move him.

Perfect. Tipical example of group attack.

>Basically can you jump between warriors whenever you like (except the middle of movement). If NOT how do group attacks work. We played that you could jump between them but just not mid-action.

It is allowed the example you wrote above. Not allowed move partially, play an action, then end movement.
Ciao
Angelo
