Thread: Pac-Mania alla 2008! But without the mania....

So I recently bought this game as a nostalgic look back at my childhood. This game purchased at the price of 75 cents was, in my mind, a good deal! You get to play pac-man as a 2 player variant.

So here it is almost a week later and it's collecting dust on my shelf when my best friend and gaming partner Sean looks over and says, "That's new. What's that all about?" I answer that I don't really know and that I bought it more as a coffee table game. We opened it up, set up the board and began to play.

Set up was incredibly easy, put the marbles in the holes, place the pac-men(sp?) in their respective zones, and the ghosts in the center. It was quintessential Milton Bradley/Parker Brothers

The dynamic of the game was very random, roll the dice collect the pods and move on. The ghost moves where you want it to go, with respect to the dice.

I did like the fact you could steal from the other player(s) two different ways, by hitting them with the ghost or eating a ghost. But that's all this game really had going for it.

Knowing that most racing games are bad I had my doubts, but this game was awful. It was stealing, racing and vague rules that will now keep this game on the shelf, until I trade it off the shelf...but what do I expect for a game whose recommended ages are 7-14.

Do you get to select which die you use to move your pac-man (and if so before or after the roll) or is this determined by some ditintion in the dice?

Thread: Pac Man Nostalgia or Good Game?

Pac-Man is a cute little game from the early 80's. I remember playing this game with my cousins for hours. (Over the Atari 2600 version)

The board is almost an exact duplicate of the Pac-Man mazes. I realize that some of you may be Troglodytes who have never seen pac-man, so I'll explain. Pac Man is a maze game where your character (Pac-Man) moves around the board and consumes power pellets (surprisingly heavy marbles) while ghosts chase him.

You can play up to 4 players (which is the most fun) and you roll 2x 6 sided dice. You use one of the dice to move your pac-man (who has a cute little mechanism to "eat" the marbles) and the other dice to move one of the 2 ghosts - generally away from you and towards your opponents. Your opponents do the same.

Person with the most marbles when they are all gone wins. Alltogether very simple. I will say there is a surprising amount of strategy for such a simple game. I fully expected to play this after 20+ years and go "dear god, what was I thinking" much like I do when I see Scooby Doo on TV. Not so, I found the game to be just as fun now (and with the added bonus of nostalgia) as it was back then.

You can find this game very cheap on Ebay (I got mine for $10+ship), and it would be a excellent short filler game to add to your collection or a fabulous game to play with your children.

Overall 7/10

Thread: Pac Man Fever! It's driving me crazy!

If you've not actually played the game, you might not believe me when I tell you that a board game version of Pac Man is actually kind of fun. No, really - it is. Released back in 1982, at the peak of the Pac Mania, where you couldn’t swing a power pellet without hitting Pac Man cereal, Pac Man underroos, Pac Man T-Shirts, Pac Man toothbrushes, Pac Man pasta, Pac Man TV shows - oh, and the occasional video game. Not to put too fine of a point on it, Pac Man was everywhere.

And while opinions based on the Atari 2600 version - which sucked beyond suck - folks may have been scared off by another dose of Pac Man in another form. But, they'd be wrong and they'd be missing out.

The game starts with some retro-swank box art. Really, after a cover like this, the game could have sucked bad and it wouldn’t have mattered. I mean really - how do you compare Professor Plum and Mrs Scarlet (sexy tho she may be) getting the third degree to a raving yellow maniac getting his mad crazy feeding frenzy on a bunch of scared ghosts? You don’t, that’s how. Don't even try - ain't going to happen.

The board is next to work it's charms - being a pretty faithful recreation of the Pac Man maze we all know and love. 72 white marbles dot the board, each representing one of the digital dots from the arcade. There's also four more yellow marbles, representing the Power Pellets in the video game, providing a way for Pac to bust a move on his supernatural neighbors.

Completing the picture are the plastic Pac Mans (Pac Men?) and the two Ghosts. The Pac Men come molded in four colors- red, blue, green and of course the classic yellow. Obviously the most coveted Pac of the lot would be the Yellow. Frankly all others are just pale imitations of the original. The Ghosts shun their individual personalities, both going with an all blue motif. Its confusing, since blue is the state where Ghosts can be eaten - but if they're always blue. .. AH! Camouflage! That way, Pac never knows if he's safe or not - very clever.

Thankfully the instructions are printed directly on the box lid, making them pretty hard to lose. Not that you really need the instructions mind you - the game is simple enough to play once you've done it a few times.

The game is good for up to four players, and this is defiantly a case where you want to have a full group. Since half of a players move is dedicated to screwing over the other players, the back and forth of two people gets boring really fast. No, spread the love around by having two or three victims to choose from.

And whatever you do, do NOT play with someone who is, how shall we say - dexterity challenged? A wrong nudge to the table at the wrong time, and you'll spill the marbles off their holes. And that point, you'd have to be Mr Spock to remember where all the marbles went. On the other hand, this could be a benefit - should you find yourself on the losing end of the game. One wayward bump and you're all good.

The Pac Men are the other keen feature of this game. Position the Pac Piece over a marble and press down. Boom - Pac Man eats the dots! Sadly there's no feature for Pacs to eat the Ghosts - sorry, they are right off the menu for the moment. However I would be remiss in my duties were I to not mention that they got Pac Man wrong! Teeth! He has teeth! What's up with that?

When it's your turn, you roll two dice. One die represents the number of spaces your Pac Man gets to move. The other, well - that’s how far you get to move a ghost - and how badly you get to screw your friends and comrades. You see, when you get hit by a ghost, you are forced to give over two of your precious marbles to the player who got all paranormal on you. Adding further to your problem, you get sent back to your start position. After the first couple of trips back, your consecutive rolls will prove useless as your Pac Man moves over spots where the marbles have already been collected.

Anyway, after your turn, you drop the eaten pellets into a small tray, conveniently color coded to match your Pac. The eventual goal of the game of course is to have more dots than everyone else.

On the other hand, you can however eat the ghosts. Just as being hit by a ghost takes away from your pile, eating a ghost adds to it. Hitting a ghost in the same turn as eating a yellow power pellet and suddenly you can choose which player you get to take two marbles away from. And believe you me, those two marbles will go a long way at the end of the day. Dead ghosts (?) get sent back to the center of the maze, the Power Pellets respawn and the whole process starts over again next turn.

The game continues until all the white marbles have been eaten - and then everyone counts their piles. The biggest number gets the Pac Man Crown, and can rule over Pac-Land with a fair and just hand. Or, since nobody ever counts the other players pile, and nobody ever makes sure that there are 72 marbles accounted for, the person CLAIMING to have the biggest pile wins. Go ahead and fudge your numbers. Its all good under the fair and just rule of Pac-Land!

Thread: User Review

Pac-Man

Let me begin by stating that I am a huge fan of video games. Like most children of the late 70's/early 80's, I have been playing video game since before I knew my times tables. This fact, which seems likely to enhance my enjoyment of this game, actually works against any joy that is to be found in this game.

THE BITS: They're just okay. It has a weird board which doesn't fold down the middle, punched with many holes on which you place marbles (power pellets and normal pellets). Also included are the pacmans and the enemy ghosts. The PacMan pieces are perhaps the best part of this game. They have a mving lower jaw which adds a unique, slightly enjoyable "munching mechanism." You actually "eat" the marbles as you play ths game.

GAMEPLAY: Here is where the problem lies. It just isn't any fun, especially for those who enjoy the arcade game. Sure, it's great for nostalgia, but that's all. The set-up time is not outweighed by any enjoyment and the endgame takes forever. Each player rolls two dice, one can be used for your pacman, one for the ghosts, and if and only if you roll doubles, both can be used for your pacman. Whippee! All this amounts to is during one turn you move away from the ghosts and move the ghosts away from you, and the next turn your opponent moves the ghosts back. Very tit-for-tat and comes down to luck, who ever rolls highest. This game, while meant for young children, is so luck based that it makes Snakes and Ladders look like ASL. Okay, maybe not, but you know what I'm getting at.

Avoid this game unless you want it for collecor's sake or for 5 year-olds, especially if you are a fan of the arcade game!
