Thread: Grayskale Spring 2008 League Race 2 - Barcelona

This Spring's Formula De Single-Lap league continued with a rough and tumble race through the Barcelona Circuit.

Our league uses the clever markers for car tire (black), brake (red), fuel (yellow), body (white), and engine (blue) points as demonstrated in dan4th's photo:

All cars start with the standard 1-lap configuration (4 tires, 3 brakes, 2 fuel, 1 body, 1 engine)

The Start:
To make the league more competitive we use a reverse seeding for starting position. The current leaders in the points standing start in the back of the pack while those trailing start in the front. For week two we had 5 2 car teams participating.

Slow But Steady (SBS) (white)
Rojo Grande (RG) (Red)
Fluffy Bunny Racing Incorporated (FBRI) (Blue)
Team Jherkov Motors (TJM) (Yellow)
Monkey Auto Racing (MAR) (Green)

Our racers were raring to jump off the starting line, but with 0 fast starts and 3 slow starts we had a thick pack developing.

Note the white glass bead in the background representing the front fender of one of team SBS's cars. MAR's green car closed off the track to potential passers, then had his green/yellow teammate narrowly avoid disaster as he drove into the pack.

Turn 1 claims the race's first victim as teams SBS and MAR jam the corner and the green spoilered SBS car takes the brunt of the damage.

As the racers clear turn 1 we can see the huge pile of used tire points used up to negotiate the tricky first turn. Altogether 13 wear points (fuel, brakes, body, and tires) and 1 car were lost in the first corner.

Turns 2, 3, 4, and 5 are taken a bit more cautiously as the teams realize that there's still a long race to go.
TJM, bringing up the back of the pack in the above picture, begins to open up a bit and gains considerable ground. With the yellow car sitting in 2nd position to MAR's green car in the start of turn 5 and plenty of wear points left, TJM's yellow car decides to upshift to 6th gear to tear down the 19 space straight.

Ooh... mighty big roll there TJM. The yellow car holds together, but just barely, spending every wear point he had left and spinning out. He now has a large lead on the pack, but is going to have to start up from 1st gear with three turns still to go.

With the race a little over half completed, TJM's yellow car is trying to gear up for the final turns while RG and FBRI bring up the rear. FBIR decides to try to advance down the straight that was almost so good to TJM, but with disastrous results...

Poor, blue... if only he had another tire point...

Undeterred, FBRI pushes their trailing car hard through the last few turns, picking up 2 spots on teh field before over-rolling the penultimate turn and careening wildly into the stands.

The final finish order (distinctly lacking in blue cars). Even after spinning out the yellow car manages to place well in 4th. Note that The green cars of Team MAR, the team of our photographer, somehow managed to start in 5th and 10th and finish in 1st and 10th, taking over the points lead emphatically.

Final results:

1st: Green 10 points
2nd: Yellow-Red 8 points
3rd: Red 6 points
4th: Yellow 5 points
5th: Green-Yellow 4 points
6th: Red-Blue 3 points
7th: White 2 points
DNF: White-Green
DNF: Blue
DNF: Blue-White

Overall League Standings:

1st: Monkey Auto Racing 22 points
2nd: Team Jherkov Racing 19 points
3rd: Rojo Grande 13 points
4th: Dave's Not Here Man 10 points
5th: Fluffy Bunny Racing Inc 5 points
6th: Slow But Steady 2 points
7th: D-KAPITATOR!!! 0 points

Race Stats:

10 cars started
7 cars finished

tire points spent: 29 of 40
brake points spent: 19 of 30
fuel points spent: 11 of 20
body points spent: 5 of 10
engine points spent: 1 of 10

Average points spent/car: 65/10 = 6.5

Thread: Grayskale Spring 2008 League Race 1 - Buenos-Aires

This Spring's Formula De Single-Lap league started off with a tightly contested race through Buenos-Aires.

Whenever points are expended, we place them on the track and end up with a track that tells the whole story of the race, like this:

I'll use the number references in the image to re-create the race. Click through to the full-size image if you can't see the reference numbers in the shrink-down.

Start: The racers line up: Yellow-red, green, red, green-yellow, Yellow, White, and blue. The seven competitors start out fast and clean (3 fast starts, no slow starts)

1: Green finds himself speeding into turn two in 4th gear, but rolls too low to make the corner. He spends the 1st wear point of the race dropping some fuel to downshift into the turn.

2: Turn three gets very congested as red, green, and green-yellow all end their moves next to each other at the far end of the corner. Yellow clips the green-yellow car in the move, costing her a body point. Yellow, who has fallen behind heading into turn 1, manages to clip through turns 2 and 3 in 5th gear, sliding just a hair past the end of turn 3 and burning a tire point while catch up with the pack in short order.

3: All three front runners race down the back stretch in 6th gear, and all 3 unfortunately end their rolls just short of the "Curva de Ascari" forcing them to each burn a fuel point rapidly downshifting.

4: The white car, sliding into the "Curva de Ascari" in 5th gear with a 20 roll triggers engine checks for half of the field leading to two overstressed engines (white and green).

5: Green skids into the 1st stop of turn 7 and nudges the leading red car, taking a point of body damage in the process.

6/7: Turn 7 got quite messy as the three front runners all stopped just at or beyond the end of the turn while the chasing cars took the opportunity to roll a little risky and catch up. Altogether 2 brake points and 4 tire points were spent to maintain car control through this tricky turn and our 1st casualty, the green-yellow car, blows up when clipped by an aggressively driving blue car.

8: Turn 8 separated the racers back into two groups with yellow-red, green, and yellow each hitting the turn cleanly from turn 7. Blue, red, and white all missed the turn on the short side and had to spend another turn in low gear.

9: Blue stretches to reach turn 9 but falls short and decides to burn more fuel to head into the tricky 3 stop turn slow.

10: The front three can smell the finish line and begin to push for an advantage. Each rolls aggressively, burning some tire points in the acceleration into the last turn.

11: White seeing his chance to get out of the back of this race, upshifts to 4th gear while still needing one more stop in the corner. With 6 safe landing spaces, 3 tires and 2 brakes left, he'll be ok with a roll of 7-11 and blow right past both Red and Blue who are currently hanging out at the end of the turn. Unfortunately for white, he rolls a 12, overshoots the turn by 6 spaces and watches as his car explodes dramatically taking out an entire pavilion of race fans.

12: Green and yellow fight through the final turn with green taking the inside line.

13: Final results:

1st: Yellow-Red 10 points
2nd: Green 8 points
3rd: Yellow 6 points
4th: Blue 5 points
5th: Red 4 points

White and Green-Yellow DNF

Overall League Standings:

1st: Yellow-Red 10 points
2nd: Green 8 points
3rd: Yellow 6 points
4th: Blue 5 points
5th: Red 4 points

Race Stats:

7 cars started
5 cars finished

tire points spent: 16 of 28
brake points spent: 8 of 21
fuel points spent: 5 of 14
body points spent: 4 of 7
engine points spent: 2 of 7

Average points spent/car: 25/7 = 3.57

Thread: Barcelona - Sharp Pencil League '06

RACE 11B - Barcelona (18)
August 3, 2006

ABOUT THE LEAGUE
The Sharp Pencil League is in its sixth season. We award a Team Championship trophy and a Driver Championship Trophy at the end of the year. We have 10 teams that run two cars each. Therefore, each week, we split into two groups of five (running on tracks A and B). We will run 14 races in 2006. All races are two laps.

We have several house rules. The most notable one is that we do not roll for body in the straightaway. Instead, we score a body hit in the turn if the black die rolled is equal to or less than the number of stops in the turn (ie - 3 stop turn = hit on 1, 2 or 3). Body checks are made for all adjacent cars, including those that pull in front. We also add one to the body check roll in rain and for every space that is overshot.

We allow teams to construct their own cars, using 21 construction points. We do not use suspension rules. Both cars on a team must be constructed identically. Construction may only change after a DNF.

In addition to choice of tires, we allow drivers to choose whether to take downforce at the start of the race. This allows them to back up one space in the corners (if desired) and it shortens die rolls in 4th, 5th and 6th gear. (11 max in 4th, 18 max in 5th, 26 max in 6th.) A car cannot use downforce to back up a spot and stay in the corner when it would have otherwise overshot. A car cannot use downforce if it applies a brake.

Qualifying is by die roll, but each team is guaranteed to have a car in one of the first five spots. Upon pitting, a team may elect to take a long pit rather than try for a short pit. If he does so, he may restore one point of body damage. Pits are chosen by teams in reverse qualifying order.

Points are awarded to the top eight finishers and kept track of for the Team and Driver Championships. Driver Championship points will also determine the qualifying order of the last race of the season, in which the top five teams in the points championship will race on one track and the bottom five on the other.

In addition to championship points, drivers earn "Driver Points (DP)" One driver point allows a car to reroll one die, one time. The top three finishers at each race earn a full Driver Point. Any car that crosses the finish line behind them earns 0.5 DPs. Cars that DNF receive zero. Teams may also build one DP into their car at the cost of two construction points.

TEAMS
Chameleon (115)
Goo (108)
Guinness (70)
USA (69)
Green (56)

WEATHER
Changeable-Sunny-Rain-Changeable-Sunny-Permanently
Sunny

QUALIFYING
1. Lucky Spencer (USA)
2. Erin Brockovich (Green)
3. David Evans (Guinness)
4. Dmitri Kravinoff (Chameleon)
5. Jim Gelatino (Goo)
6. Jacques Cousteau (Green)
7. Bobbie Phillips (Chameleon)
8. Vinny Viscous (Goo)
9. Tank Girl (USA)
10. Paul Hewson (Guiness)

COMMENTS
This is the debut of Tank Girl for Team USA. The hire
is quite ironic, since USA has changed their setup to
include just two body points (including crash). These
cars are anything but tanks!

Three teams are sporting green paint jobs (Goo,
Guinness and Green).

Kravinoff uses a built-in DP to reroll a 12 - he rolls
a 7 and stays in the corner.

At the halfway point in Lap 1, team USA has used all
his hard tires.

Phillips uses a built-in DP to change an 18 to a 16,
reducing an overshoot.

Phillips uses a DP to try to change 13 into a 17+, but
only gets a 14. She curses over the radio.

Spencer has dropped from pole position all the way to
last place in just a half lap of racing.

Evans slides in the rain and crashes into Phillips,
knocking himself out of the race. Minutes later,
Hewson sacrifices himself to go join his teammate in
the bar, as neither Guiness car can make it beyond the
first lap.

Kravinoff hits the pits in the rain and successfully
quick pits. While he's in there, he switches over to
hard tires, hoping it dries out. He's first to cross
the stripe and earns a bonus point.

Brockovich pits second and takes rain tires, hoping it
remains wet. Shortly afterward, she uses a DP to
change a 19 (too deep) to an 11 (too short).

Kravinoff uses 2 DP to not spin out, rolling an 11, 11
again and finally a 9.

Tank Girl uses a built-in DP to reroll and draft into
the corner. Both USA cars have withstood all the
bumping and rubbing so far.

Kravinoff held first place throughout most of Lap 2.
But some poor rolling, combined with some good
maneuvering by Team Goo does him in. Both Gelatino and
Viscous roll sixh gear into the final turn - and
rocket out 6 spaces each - to capture first and
second.

Cousteau uses a DP to change a 7 (short) into an 11 in
the final turn and takes third place. Kravinoff
suddenly finds himself in 4th at the finish line.

Once again, the standings tighten up, as Goo and
Chameleon are separated by just one point with three
races to go!

EARNED DRIVER POINTS USED
Phillips
Brockovich (2)
Kravinoff (2)
Cousteau

LAP ONE LEADER
Kravinoff - Chameleon (+1 pt)

RESULTS
1. Jim Gelatino (Goo) 10 pts (78 total) 1.0 DP (2.0 total)
2. Vinny Viscous (Goo) 8 pts (48 total) 1.0 DP (2.5 total)
3. Jacques Cousteau (Green) 6 pts (43 total) 1.0 DP (2.5 total)
4. Dmitri Kravinoff (Chameleon) 5+1 pts (65 total) 0.5 DP (1.0 total)

RACE 4B - Buenos Aires
March 30, 2006

TEAMS
Avanti (37 pts)
Chameleon (34 pts)
USA (19 pts)
GT (18 pts)
Wyld Stallions (17 pts)

WEATHER
Changeable-Sunny-Permanently Sunny

QUALIFYING
1. Bobby Phillips (Chameleon)
2. Rullo Fortunato (Avanti)
3. Johnny Lightning (USA)
4. Kirk O'Shea (GT)
5. Bill Preston (Wyld Stallions)
6. Vincitore di Veloce (Avanti)
7. Dmitri Kravinoff (Chameleon)
8. Dirk O'Shea (GT)
9. Lucky Spencer (USA)
10. Ted Logan (Wyld Stallions)

COMMENTS
Due to scheduling conflicts, the Buenos Aires group has decided to move their race ahead by two weeks. That means Bob (Chameleon) and David (GT) are racing two tracks tonight, having just completed Atlanta. It's more than six grueling hours of racing for these two, as they start the first race at 5:45 pm and end the last one at midnight.

Clean start. Everyone has chosen to use downforce and soft tires. Now, we are just praying it doesn't rain. Phillips, Fortunato and Lightning make it into turn 1 together, but only Phillips is able to make it into turn 2. She is running all alone, with a huge pack of seven cars together trailing by a stop into turn 4. Phillips maintains her lead into the 3-stop turn. A few moments later, Preston jams his car into the 3-stopper, but crashes into Lightning and is out of the race. Phillips heads into the pits, but rolls high and has to sit there. Fortunato sees a chance - he must roll a 25 or better in 6th gear to make his pits. His first attempt fails, so he uses a Driver's Point. He fails again. Fortunato ends up long pitting, and that's the last challenge Phillips will ever get from this field. Meanwhile, Logan loses his concentration coming out of the 3-stop turn and spins out, unnecessarily while attempting to damage Spencer's car. Spencer then attempts to make the next turn and rolls an 11 three times in a row to come up short - losing two precious Driver Points in the process. On lap two, Phillips extends her lead. Chameleon also pushes Kravinoff up to 3rd briefly, but he misses turn 2 and falls back into 4th place.

Phillips completely dominates the race (does this mean she is a dominatrix?) and easly cruises past the line for fourth place. Dirk O'Shea misses the final turn and concedes second place to Fortunato. That gives both Kravinoff and Spencer a shot at third. But they both come up short of the final turn. Dirk O'Shea is safely in 3rd. But di Veloce takes advantage of the situation and jumps into the last turn in 5th gear. Both Spencer and Kravinoff must roll 4th gear into the turn. So Avanti is a big beneficiary of the late race theatrics, moving ahead several spots on the last turn.

The track eats up a ton of Driver Points, as teams continue to roll 11 and 12 in spots they need a 17 or 18. The rerolls didn't help many people and there is a lot of cursing heard on the short-wave radio communication between the drivers and their pit crew.

EARNED DRIVER POINTS USED
Fortunato (2)
Spencer (2)
Kravinoff (1)
K.
