Nice report.
I like the idea to put the spent points on the track, I'll probably adopt that.

Thread: Grayskale Spring 2008 League Race 8 - Portland, Oregon, USA

"Where D-KAPITATOR's Reign of Terror Ends in Turn Six"

Spring 2008's Formula De Single-Lap headed west to lovely Portland Oregon for Week 8. See http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/30435 for race reports for all league races.

Our league uses the clever markers for car tire (black), brake (red), fuel (yellow), body (white), and engine (blue) points as demonstrated in dan4th's photo:

All cars start with the standard 1-lap configuration (4 tires, 3 brakes, 2 fuel, 1 body, 1 engine)

The Start:
To make the league more competitive we use a reverse seeding for starting position. The current leaders in the points standing start in the back of the pack while those trailing start in the front. Five teams competed this week with two cars each.

Team Jherkov Motors (TJM) (White & White-Green)
Rojo Grande (RG) (Red & Red-Blue)
D-KAPITATOR!!! (DK) (Yellow, Yellow-Red)
Fluffy Bunny Racing Incorporated (FBRI) (Blue & Blue-White)
Monkey Auto Racing (MAR) (Green & Green-Yellow)

The race started out calm and orderly in the front while cars in the back of the pack got aggressive early. FBRI's second car cut to the middle early and paid the price, losing a body point in an early collision. Losing a body point a full ten spaces before crossing the starting line was a new league record.

The Portland track starts the racers off with a nice clean straight followed immediately by a short three turn stop. Cars clumped up quickly as they slowed for the turn with a little rubbing in the corner costing TJM's lead car a body point and leading to a lot of cursing from the second part of the pack which could not make it into the very crowded turn.

Turn one took a heavy toll on the bodies of the lead cars as they rubbed repeatedly.

Several cars used up fuel early downshifting to slow down for turn one. Both FBRI's cars manage astonishingly bad rolls falling one space short of the first turn.

RG's second car passes the two unfortunate FBRI cars, leaving FBRI alone in the back while the lead pack positions themselves for the tricky second straight.

TJM's lead car takes the straight in 5th gear and makes it in one turn. The other three lead pack cars stay in 4th gear and approach the two-stop second turn more cautiously.

Meanwhile, the rest of the cars slowly negotiate turn one and watch how the leaders fare in turn two. Can they learn from the leader's mistakes?

TJM's lead car drops into third gear to make his second stop in turn two, but still skids well past the end of the turn spending several tire points.

The rest of the lead pack follows suit, leaving behind piles of tire and brake points as they overshoot the end of turn two. FBRI's lead car shoots from last place up into the lead pack, but spends nearly all of his tires and brakes in the process. Meanwhile, his Blue-White teammate nudges MAR's trailing car entering turn two causing a point of body damage. Half of the cars in the field are now driving with no body points to spare.

TJM's lead car pulls away from the pack momentarily. With very few wear points to spare he'll have to stay away from the others and run a clean race to take the checkered flag.

TJM loses his brief cushion as MAR and DK both negotiate turn four well.

FBRI slips back into the second pack in turn three.

As the tail pack finishes up turn two, they stare in amazement at the huge pile of tires and brakes there. Altogether, 26 wear points were spent by the field negotiating turn two: One body, six fuel, none brakes and ten tires. This is by far the most damaging corner our league has had on any track.

RG's lead car fails to hop corner to corner from turn four to five and falls off the lead pack.

FBRI and MAR together block off the inside of turn three, forcing RG's trailing car back a turn.

MAR, DK, and TJM's lead cars stay neck and neck down the back straight.

FBRI's trailing Blue-White car makes a daring move to catch up with his teammate, but clips TJM's trailing car sending them both onto the infield grass and ending their day.

The lead three are all still side-by-side as they head into the final tricky three stop turn.

RG's trailing car has the course all to himself...

And smiles as he passes the two wrecked cars in turn five. He's advanced to 8th place, a scoring position!

MAR and DK both push hard through the final turn... perhaps too hard. Both overshoot the end of the turn, just barely exceeding the brake and tire points they have left and careen into the crowd.

TJM's lead car, forced by his early damage to take a more conservative line through turn 6, is positioned well to win. While DK's lead car has crashed, the DK backup car (Yellow-red) has pulled up even with TJM and is threatening to take over the lead...

But he too overshoots the final turn just a touch too much. Both of DK's cars, pushing hard to win, have tragically crashed in the final turn.

TJM, the only lead pack car to survive the final turn, cruises to the checkered flag. RG's lead car cruises into second while the final three cars enter the deadly turn six.

RG's second car, having advanced all the way to fifth place simply by avoiding conflict, takes one final aggressive move to pass FBRI...

... and succeeds, overtaking FBRI to take 4th place.

Congratulations to Team Jherkov Motors on their first checkered flag and to Rojo Grande for taking two prime scoring places in a tough race. With 13 points between the Red and Red-Blue cars this race represents the best team finish for Team Rojo Grande this season.

Final results:
[c]

1st: White (TJM) 10 points
2nd: Red (RG) 8 points
3rd: Green-Yellow (MAR) 6 points
4th: Red-Blue (RG) 5 points
5th: Blue (FBRI) 4 points
DNF: Yellow (DK)
DNF: Blue-White (FBRI)
DNF: Yellow-Red (DK)
DNF: White-Green (TJM)
DNF: Green (MAR)
[/c]
[c]
Overall League Standings:

Monkey Auto Racing	55
Fluffy Bunny Racing Inc	47
D-KAPITATOR 42
Team Jherkov Racing	42
Rojo Grande 42
Dave's Not Here Man	29
Slow But Steady 23

[/c]

To see other race reports from this season, see my Geeklist : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/30435

Race Stats:

10 cars started
5 cars finished

tire points spent: 23 of 40
brake points spent: 19 of 30
fuel points spent: 14 of 20
body points spent: 7 of 10
engine points spent: 1 of 10

Average points spent/car: 64/10 = 6.4

Thread: Grayskale Spring 2008 League Race 7 - Indianapolis, Indiana USA

"Where D-KAPITATOR Continues His Reign of Terror While We Take Right Hand Turns at Indy"

Spring 2008's Formula De Single-Lap league roared into week 7 with a race on the infield track at Indianapolis. This week also featured the debut of the league trophies. Here is what we're all fighting to win:

Our league uses the clever markers for car tire (black), brake (red), fuel (yellow), body (white), and engine (blue) points as demonstrated in dan4th's photo:

All cars start with the standard 1-lap configuration (4 tires, 3 brakes, 2 fuel, 1 body, 1 engine)

The Start:
To make the league more competitive we use a reverse seeding for starting position. The current leaders in the points standing start in the back of the pack while those trailing start in the front. Four teams competed this week, two with two cars and the two teams trailing in the standings getting three car each.

Rojo Grande (RG) (Red, Red-Blue, and White-Red)
D-KAPITATOR!!! (DK) (Yellow, Yellow-Green, and White)
Fluffy Bunny Racing Incorporated (FBRI) (Blue & Blue-White)
Monkey Auto Racing (MAR) (Green & Green-Yellow)

There were no slow starts or fast starts, but both 2nd and 4th place starters rolled well early on gaining position down the starting straight. The Yellow-Green and Green-Yellow cars, apparently arguing over trademarked color combinations, managed to nearly collide half a dozen spaces before the starting line, but both cars managed to escape without any damage.

Team DK's lead car sprints out to an early lead while RG's lead car suffers from some mediocre rolls.

RG's rolls turn from mediocre to tragic as two of his teams cars fall one space short of the 1st turn. MAR and DK lead cars hit the first turn in stride and are threatening to pull away early.

Both DK and MAR's lead cars are forced to use their 1st fuel points up down-shifting as they realize turn one is a 2-stopper. The rest of the field piles into the turn leading to a very congested curve.

The lead pair both make the next turn in one roll and pull off into the distance as the trailing cars just manage to start turn one. The mid-pack congestion begins to take it's toll as RG's Red-Blue car loses it's precious body point in the tight quarters jostling.

Two of the mid-pack cars make turn two in a single roll while three fall short, breaking the field of ten cars into four distinct groups.

The close quarters begin to exact a high toll. The second two cars rub as they negotiate turn three, costing FBRI's Blue-White car a body point. Meanwhile, MAR's aggressive move to the inside of turn two is thwarted by RG's Red-Blue car which has already chosen that line. MAR slams into RG, taking both cars into the infield in a mass of fiery plastic wreckage.

No fans were hurt, but the guy waving that red flag must be disappointed...

DK's White car is having terrible luck with the turns, but realizes that he's gone from 10th place to 8th simply by not blowing up.

MAR uses the straight between turns five and six to pull away slightly from DK.

DK's Yellow-Green car is rammed from behind by FBRI's Blue car, sending body parts from both flying. The Blue car manages to drive away. Yellow-Green does not.

FBRI and RG both skid past turn five, trying to line themselves up for a single 5th gear roll down the straight and a chance to catch the lead group in the tricky 3-stop turn six. DK's White car calmly cruises past the wreckage of his teammate's car and takes over 7th place.

DK's White car pauses to examine the large pile of burnt tires in the turn five infield.

FBRI's skidding gambit works as he rolls a 17 in 5th gear to make it into turn six in one roll. Unfortunately, he comes in fast behind his teammate, clips his rear tire and goes skidding into the infield grass, ending his race.

All six remaining cars work their way through turn six. FBRI's remaining car decides to spend a brake point rather than risk the wrath of the black damage die. DK's White car cruises past FBRI's disabled blue car and smiles as he takes over 6th place.

Both DK and MAR's lead cars sit a full turn ahead of the pack and prepare to take a conservative approach to the penultimate straight while the cars in positions three through five begin to ponder getting more aggressive to challenge for the checkered flag.

MAR's conservative approach turns disastrous as he falls one space short of the final turn. FBRI takes advantage by rolling just short of the turn as well, but far enough that he can draft off of MAR and slide into the turn and second place overall.

RG tries the same trick, but with FBRI blocking the way into the turn there is nowhere to go.

DK's trailing car makes one last attempt to pass a non-disabled car but comes up short and has to settle for 6th.

Congratulations to D-KAPITATOR!!!
I love how you use markers for the tire/engine/fuel. Placing on the track where they are used really helps with the telling of the race. That, and the photos. Elkahrt Lake is one of my favorite tracks to run (it's challenging and it's an hour or so away from my home). I only have 10 tracks (both US packs and the two that come with the game.

One of these years, I'll run a season.

I enjoyed this session report.

Thread: Grayskale Spring 2008 League Race 6 - lkhart-Lake, Wisconsin USA

"Where The First Stays First But The Last Climbs to Second"

Spring 2008's Formula De Single-Lap league passed its mid point and began a four week tour through the US with week six's race at Ikhart-Lake, Wisconsin.

Six teams competed this week (alas, Team Slow But Steady was called away for work, how silly) Four racing with two cars and the two leading the standings getting one car each.

D-KAPITATOR!!! (DK) (White & White-Green)
Rojo Grande (RG) (Red & Red-Blue)
Dave's Not Here Man (DNH) (Yellow-Red & Green-Yellow)
Fluffy Bunny Racing Incorporated (FBRI) (Blue & Blue-White)
Team Jherkov Motors (TJM) (Yellow)
Monkey Auto Racing (MAR) (Green)

There were no slow starts, no fast starts, and no particularly interesting starts unless you count the rather jaunty angle that DK's second car decided to take off from. After the body damage at the starting line on previous weeks, the quiet start was welcomed by most...

But alas, we had checked too soon. Before the final two cars can cross the starting line FBRI's lead car inexplicably swerves into the center lane and takes out DNH's front spoiler.

The lead pack begins to form as the 1st and 2nd place cars hit the first curve a turn before anyone else.

The remaining eight cars drive a touch recklessly, hoping to keep the leaders within sight. Half a dozen tire and break points are spent jostling for position exiting turn 1.

One must zoom waaaaay away from the track to be able to see both the lead two cars and the main pack at the same time. DK and RG both drop the hammer and roll the big blue die down the first long straight, amazingly still staying within a space of each other.

The main pack splits as two cars fall short of turn two. FBRI's blue car wishes his teammate good luck as he down-shifts into irrelevance.

Turns 3 and 4 bring the leaders back toward the main pack a bit. In the background you can see the small sea of fuel points various cars have spent trying to shed excess speed to transition from the gear 6 straight to the relatively tight turn 3. TJM's yellow car opted to try to hit the turn in 6th.

"I can survive any roll but a 30... I'll be fine" the brave driver said.

Given the Yellow car's wreckage in the foreground I bet you can guess what he rolled...

Despite TJM's example, DNH's rear car attempts to catch the main pack by taking turn 3 in 6th gear. He was slightly more lucky, burning all his brake and tire points and spinning out, but surviving to finish.

After the chaos of turn 3 we take a moment to congratulate the course designers for their amazing foresight. Mere steps from the crashed and spun out cars is a waiting medivac helicopter.

While the yellow cars were having problems with turn 3, RG's red car has had a touch of trouble with turn 4, dropping back from the lead two into the secondary pack and leaving DK's white car alone in front.

Very alone in front...

DNH's yellow-red car recovers from his spin out, buy only in time to see the last trailers pass him. His only hope for points now is for someone ahead of him to make a mistake.

DK's lead car builds a considerable lead while his second car...

Has climbed into 4th and is challenging the pack for second place overall...

DK hits turn 7 with the competition barely visible in the distance.

To fit 4 maps into the space normally used for 2, the boards for the US expansion maps are made of thinner card stock than other maps. Here the rear pack experiences the consequences of this manufacturing decision as they have to negotiate a small chasm that has formed during play...

As the sun sets in the distance DK negotiates the final few turns alone and prepares to lock up the checkered flag. In the distance behind him we can see DK's second car, RG, and DNH all still fighting for second place.

But what is this?

FBRI with two consecutive lucky rolls manages to tag turn 6 at high speed and slides up into second place while cutting the inside corner of turn 7. Didn't that guy start in last?

FBRI's luck holds up as he is still in second place with the finish line just around the corner. All three cars will get one shot to finish on their next roll, and all three will fall short, keeping the same relative positions.

As the drama at the front of the pack plays out, FBRI's main car has blown out it's engine due to too many 20s in 5th gear. This was just the break DNH needed as his nearly crippled car cautiously negotiates the rest of the course, finishing slow, well after the others and after the sun has set, but finishing in 8th place and scoring for the week. Not bad for a car that was nearly the second casualty of turn 3...

For the second week in a row Tean D-KAPITATOR!!! has both led wire to wire and had a second car place well. In two weeks he's gone from 0 points to a respectable 29 points, tied for 4th. Well done DK.

Final results:
[c]
1st: White (DK) 10 points
2nd: Blue-White (FBRI) 8 points
3rd: White-Green (DK) 6 points
4th: Red (RG) 5 points
5th: Green-Yellow (DNH) 4 points
6th: Red-Blue (RG) 3 points
7th: Green (MAR) 2 points
8th: Yellow-Red (DNH) 1 point
DNF: Blue
DNF: Yellow
[/c]

Overall League Standings:

[c]
Team Name Total Points
Monkey Auto Racing 48
Fluffy Bunny Racing Inc 35
Team Jherkov Racing 32
D-KAPITATOR!!! 29
Dave's Not Here Man 29
Rojo Grande 25
Slow But Steady 23
[/c]

Race Stats:
An annotated final picture of the track can be found here for those more visually inclined:
http://flickr.com/photos/dan4th/2468710219/in/set-7215760490...

10 cars started
8 cars finished

tire points spent: 27 of 40
brake points spent: 22 of 30
fuel points spent: 8 of 20
body points spent: 3 of 10
engine points spent: 2 of 10 (Both from the same car)

Average points spent/car: 62/10 = 6.2

I don't have the rules in front of me but I believe that if 10 debris points get placed on the track then the race is put under a yellow flag, all the debris is removed and the cars are moved forward to the next grid markings and lined up like the beginning.

My group played Portland tonight and loved it, but I'd say it's unforgiving for beginners. After the initial 3 and 2, there are a number of 10-12 segment straightaways with do-or-die rolls. You might be heading down the final straight in 6th gear... or 4th.

All 4 of us lost a car due to collisions. We can't wait to get another crack at it.

Yeah, I was going to say that Elkhart Lake is my fave of the four since there's a good variety of different stop turns on that track, and a few different spots where you can try to take some risks.

Thread: Re: Which is the best of these 4?

Elkhart Lake and Monterey are the most interesting with both lots of curves and at least one big straight-away so you get to juggle a range of dice over the course of the race. They are also long enough to have enough time for someone who is behind a bit to catch up.

Thread: Which is the best of these 4?

I'm hoping to introduce my gaming group to Formula De and thought about bringing these tracks to game night. Which is the best (tough decisions, most competitive, best for new players) of the four? Any thoughts?

Thread: SPL '07 - Playoff Race #3 (Indy)

RACE 10 - Indianapolis (26)
September 13, 2007

PLAYOFF RACE #3 of 4

ABOUT THE LEAGUE
The Sharp Pencil League is in its seventh season. We award a Team Championship trophy at the end of the year and a Driver of the Year award at the end of the regular season. (This year's Driver of the Year went to Jim Gelatino of Team Goo for the second consecutive year.)

We have 10 teams that run two cars each. This year, we split into two distinct divisions and ran 6 races on identical tracks before coming together for the All-Star race in Week 7. The top driver from each team was invited to the All-Star race, with qualifying based on each driver's performance in the previous six races.

At the end of the 7th race, the top two teams from each division, along with one wild card team, all advanced to a 4-race playoff. The rest of the field was eliminated. At the start of the playoffs, all points were reset to zero. All races are two laps.

We have several house rules. The most notable one is that we do not roll for body in the straightaway. Instead, we score a body hit in the turn if the black die rolled is equal to or less than the number of stops in the turn (ie - 3 stop turn = hit on 1, 2 or 3). Body checks are made for all adjacent cars, including those that pull in front. We also add one to the body check roll in rain and for every space that is overshot.

We allow teams to construct their own cars, using 21 construction points. We do not use suspension rules. Both cars on a team must be constructed identically. Construction may change from race to race.

In addition to choice of tires, we allow drivers to choose whether to take downforce at the start of the race. This allows them to back up one space in the corners (if desired) and it shortens die rolls in 4th, 5th and 6th gear. (-1 for every roll in 4th gear, -2 for every roll in 5th and -4 for every 6th gear roll.) A car cannot use downforce to back up a spot and stay in the corner when it would have otherwise overshot. A car cannot use downforce if it applies a brake.

Qualifying is by die roll, but each team is guaranteed to have a car in one of the first five spots. Upon pitting, a team may elect to take a long pit rather than try for a short pit. If he does so, he may restore one point of his choice, in addition to the tires. Pits are chosen by teams in reverse qualifying order.

Points are awarded to the top eight finishers.

In addition to championship points, drivers earn "Driver Points (DP)" One driver point allows a car to reroll one die, one time. The top three finishers at each race earn a full Driver Point. Any car that crosses the finish line behind them earns 0.5 DPs. Cars that DNF receive zero. Teams may also build one DP into their car at the cost of two construction points. Once the playoffs begin, all Driver Points are reset to zero.

STANDINGS GOING INTO THE RACE

Goo - 28 pts
Chameleon - 27 pts
USA - 12 pts
Avanti - 10 pts
Sluggy Freelance - 3 pts

QUALIFYING
1. Bun-Bun (Sluggy)
2. Rullo Fortunato (Avanti)
3. Jim Gelatino (Goo)
4. Lucky Spencer (USA)
5. Bobbi Phillips (Chameleon)
6. Vincitore di Veloce (Avanti)
7. Dmitri Kravinoff (Chameleon)
8. Tank Girl (USA)
9. Vinny Viscous (Goo)
10. Kiki (Sluggy)

WEATHER
Changeable

COMMENTS
This is the third of four playoff races. The race will incorporate the infield circuit of Indianapolis, moving in a clockwise direction. Wall checks apply.

As usual, Goo elects to race hard tires with no downforce. Avanti, Chameleon and Sluggy all choose soft tires and no downforce. USA puts soft tires on both cars, but elects to use downforce with Tank Girl (but not Spencer). Additionally, Avanti has set his cars up rather unusually for him. He has allocated the 21 points to 5 tires (including spin), 7 brakes (max allowed), 1 gas, 3 body, 3 engines and 1 Driver Point. It may be the first time that Avanti has chosen a built-in Driver Point.

Clean start as the cars head up the front straightaway. Fortunato (Avanti) and Bun-Bun (Sluggy) make Turn 1 together , with Bun-Bun scraping the wall on the way in. Spencer (USA), Gelatino (Goo) and DiVeloce (Avanti) also make it with the leaders, albeit the last two cars are forced to go a little deep in the middle lane.

Tank Girl (USA) is short. Phillips (Chameleon) is short because she can't draft Spencer, who is in 3rd gear. Kravinoff (Chameleon) fares much better than his partner. He double-drafts and uses a soft tire to make the turn and keep up with the leaders.

Gelatino (Goo) Fortunato (Avanti), Di Veloce (Avanti) and Bun-Bun (Sluggy) all make their second stops, blocking the exit from the turn and forcing Kravinoff (Chameleon) to gear down into 2nd. Spencer (USA) stays in 3rd gear and jams himself into the last remaining empty spot.

Phillips (Chameleon) makes her first stop, rolling a 3 to take the first outside space. Tank Girl (USA) grabs the first middle spot, leaving tough rolls for Viscous (Goo) and Kiki (Sluggy). Viscous comes up short in 4th gear. Kiki uses a soft tire to make the stop.

Gelatino (Goo) makes Turn 2, along with Fortunato (Avanti), Di Veloce (Avanti), Spencer (USA) and Bun-Bun (Sluggy). Kravinoff (Chameleon) gears up to 3rd, but comes up short.

Kiki (Sluggy), Tank Girl (USA) and Phillips (Chameleon) all make their second stops in Turn 1. Viscous (Goo) makes his first.

The front five cars (Gelatino, Fortunato, Di Veloce, Spencer and Bun-Bun) cram into Turn 3 with no trouble. The next four cars (Kravinoff, Kiki, Tank Girl and Phillips) make Turn 2. Viscous makes his second stop in Turn 1.

The leaders all make Turn 4, but Spencer (USA) overshoots by 3 spaces and Di Veloce (Avanti) eats two brakes.

Kravinoff (Chameleon), Kiki (Sluggy), Tank Girl (USA) and Phillips (Chameleon) make Turn 3, with Phillips spending a Driver Point to reroll a 12 and save tires. Viscous (Goo) goes to Turn 2.

Spencer (USA) gears to 3rd gear for Turn 5. Fortunato (Avanti) oveshoots by 1 in 4th gear. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) makes it ok in 4th, as does Gelatino (Goo) and Di Veloce (Avanti).

Kravinoff (Chameleon), Phillips (Chameleon), Kiki (Sluggy) and Tank Girl (USA) make Turn 4, although Tank Girl just barely gets there. Viscous (Goo) slides into Turn 3.

After using a built-in Driver Point, Fortunato makes Turn 6. Spencer (USA) and Gelatino (Goo) are both short. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) makes the turn, and so does Di Veloce (Avanti).

Kravinoff (Chameleon), Kiki (Sluggy), Phillips (Chameleon) and Tank Girl (USA) all make Turn 5. Viscous (Goo) pulls into Turn 4.

Fortunato (Avanti), Bun-Bun (Sluggy) and Di Veloce (Avanti) make their second stop in Turn 6. Gelatino (Goo), Spencer (USA) and Kiki (Sluggy) all make their first stop in Turn 6. Kravinoff (Chameleon) uses a soft tire to get in. Phillips (Chameleon) drafts her partner to make it in. However, Tank Girl (USA) is short. Meanwhile, Viscous (Goo) makes Turn 5.

Both Avanti cars make their third stops in T6. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) overshoots and has to spend 2 brakes. The next five cars all make their second stops in the turn. Tank Girl (USA) and Viscous (Goo) both make their first stops.

Di Veloce (Avanti) makes Turn 7. Fortunato (Avanti) overshoots by 1. Bun-Bun makes Turn 7 easily.

The next five cars all make their third stops in Turn 6. Viscous (Goo) and Tank Girl (USA) make their second stops.

Fortunato and Di Veloce (Avanti) head down the back stretch. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) rolls a 20 and uses a soft tire to make Turn 8! Weather remains changeable.

Spencer (USA) spends a Drivers Point to avoid crashing out of Turn 7, then gears down to 3rd. Kiki (Sluggy) overshoots by 1 on purpose. Phillips (Chameleon) overshoots by 2. Kravinoff (Chameleon) overshoots by 1 and ends up taking 2 body hits. Gelatino (Goo) makes the turn. Viscous (Goo) and Tank Girl (USA) make their third stops in Turn 6.

Bun-Bun (Sluggy) stops right in front of pit row and leaves his options open for the next roll. He's currently leaning toward pitting. Both Avanti cars make Turn 8 in 4th gear.

Phillips (Chameleon) heads down the back stretch. Kravinoff (Chameleon) makes Turn 8 with a 19. Kiki (Sluggy) is short. Gelatino (Goo) and Spencer (USA) are both short as well.

Tank Girl (USA) makes Turn 7. Viscous (Goo) rolls 5th gear into Turn 7 and ends up overshooting it by 3. He used a Drivers Point to exchange a 20 for a 19.

Bun-Bun (Sluggy) decides to pit after rolling a 30. The weather turns sunny, but not in the Sluggy pits, as they fail to get him back on the track quickly.

Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls a 20 and just squeeks across the stripe to lead the first lap. The weather goes back to changeable. Fortunato (Avanti) creeps ahead with an 11 in 5th gear.

Kravinoff (Chameleon) rolls 22 in 6th gear and decides to reroll it. He gets a 27 and pulls into the green pits. He decides to long pit to fix a body. Had Di Veloce not crossed the line, he says he would have skipped the pits to collect the point.

Phillips (Chameleon) makes Turn 8. Gelatino (Goo) overshoots it by 2. Kiki (Sluggy) makes it. Spencer (USA) rolls a 20. The weatehr remains changeable. Viscous (Goo) makes Turn 8. Tank Girl (USA) is short.

Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls ahead of Bun-Bun and makes Turn 1. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) is short of Turn 1 because he can't draft Di Veloce (who is in a higher gear) or use soft tires on the first turn out of the pits.

Next, Fortunato (Avanti) rolls a 24. This causes a major break in the race, as the players determine whether or not he can use his soft tires one last time to double-draft into the corner. (It's amazing that this issue has never come up in 7+ seasons of racing!) After much discussion, the debate is tied, with 2 in favor and 2 against. (Avanti abstains from the vote.) It's decided that Avanti should roll the black die - with 1-10 not allowing a draft and 11-20 enabling him to take it. The roll is a 6 and Fortunato is short of the turn. He spends a Drivers Point - and rolls another 24! Still short, but he elects to skip the pit anyway. Now, neither Avanti car will have the soft tire bonus, but they will both get double penalties for overshooting.

Next, Gelatino (Goo) rolls a 30 and double-drafts into Turn 1! Weather remains changeable.

Spencer (USA) quick-pits in the white pits and switches to hard tires. Kravinoff (Chameleon) is short of the turn. Phillips (Chameleon) drafts Kravinoff to move a little closer to Turn 1. Viscous (Goo) heads down the front straightaway. Kiki (Sluggy) pulls into pit lane. And Tank Girl (USA) makes Turn 8.

Gelatino (Goo) makes his second stop, overshooting by 1. Di Veloce does likewise, conserving his last remaining gas by rolling 4th gear.

Bun-Bun (Sluggy) shifts from 4th to 2nd to make Turn 1. Fortunato (Avanti) goes from 6th to 3rd to get in. Phillips (Chameleon) misses the turn. Kravinoff (Chameleon) makes it with a 12. Viscous (Goo) makes it with an 11. Spencer (USA) pulls out of the pits and is short. Kiki (Sluggy) rolls a 30 going into the pits, puts new soft tires on and does a weather check. It's now RAINING! Tank Girl (USA) pulls onto pit row and seriously considers going to wet tires.

Gelatino (Goo) rolls a 5 and comes up 1 space short of Turn 2. Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls an 8 and overshoots by 2 (backing up 1 with a brake). Di Veloce has no tires and 4 brakes remaining and is ill-equipped to handle the rain.

Kravinoff (Chameleon) overshoots Turn 1 by 2 spaces. Viscous (Goo) overshoots by 1. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) is clean on his second stop. Fortunato (Avanti) downshifts to 2nd gear for his second stop.

Phillips (Chameleon) makes her first stop and goes deep in 2nd gear. Spencer (USA) makes the turn. Kiki (Sluggy) makes the turn - but loses his last body on the resulting rub. He is out of the race.

Tank Girl (USA) quick pits and takes on rain tires.

Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls a 3 to nail Turn 3. Gelatino (Goo) rolls likewise to nail Turn 2.

Kravinoff (Chameleon) makes Turn 2 in good shape. Viscous (Goo) mimics his partner by rolling a 5 a coming up short. Fortunato (Avanti) is short with a 6 and spends a brake to clog up the middle lane a bit (and avoid the middle arrow). Bun-Bun (Sluggy) rolls a 5 and pulls up behind Viscous.

Phillips (Chameleon) makes her second stop in Turn 1. Spencer (USA) pulls up behind her and gives her a "love tap." She now only has 1 body remaining. Tank Girl (USA) gets a 12 and is short of Turn 1.

Di Veloce (Avanti) makes Turn 4. Gelatino (Goo) makes Turn 3. Kravinoff (Chameleon) overshoots Turn 3 by 2 and spends 1 brake.

Viscous (Goo) overshoots Turn 2 by 1 in 2nd gear. Fortunato (Avanti) makes it in 2nd. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) does likewise. Phillips (Chameleon) rolls an 8 and goes deep - burning a brake. Spencer (USA) is short of Turn 2 with a 5. Tank Girl rolls a 12 in 4th gear and goes 5 deep into Turn 1, even with the rain tires.

Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls 4th gear (hoping to be able to go to 5th next turn). He gets a 10 and overshoots Turn 5 by 2 spaces (using 2 brakes).

Kravinoff (Chameleon) makes Turn 4, along with Gelatino (Goo).

Viscous (Goo) and Fortunato (Avanti) roll 3s to nail Turn 3. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) rolls a 7 to go four out. He spends two brakes. Phillips (Chameleon) only has 1 body and any move that makes the corner would force her to rub two cars in the rain. Considering one of those cars would also give her a hit if it failed its own body check, she elects to go to 2nd gear and is very happy to get a 2 and not make the turn.

Spencer (USA) overshoots Turn 2. Tank Girl (USA) makes her 2nd stop in Turn 1.

Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls an 18 and mkaes Turn 6!

Kravinoff (Chameleon) rolls an 8 and spends a Drivers Point. He rolls a 6 and makes Turn 5 without too much stress. Gelatino (Goo) rolls an 11 and goes 2 over (spending 1 brake) of Turn 5, setting himself up for 5th gear nicely.

Bun-Bun (Sluggy) makes Turn 4. Viscous (Goo) does, too. And Fortunato (Avanti).

Spencer (USA) overshoots Turn 3 by 2. Phillips (Chameleon) overshoots it by 3. Tank Girl (USA) makes Turn 2.

Di Veloce (Avanti) makes his second stop in Turn 6.

Gelatino (Goo) rolls a 20 to make Turn 6. Weather is now changeable/rain. Gelatino is very deep in the turn. Kravinoff (Chameleon) is short.

Viscous (Goo), Bun-Bun (Sluggy) and Fortunato (Avanti) make Turn 5, with Viscous spending 1 tire and 2 brakes.

Spencer (USA) makes Turn 4, along with Phillips (Chameleon). Tank Girl (USA) makes Turn 3.

Back up front, Di Veloce (Avanti) makes his 3rd stop in Turn 6 using 2nd gear. Gelatino (Goo) gears down to 2nd for his second stop.

Kravinoff (Chameleon) makes his first stop in Turn 6. Viscous (Goo) rolls a perfect 16 to make the turn. Fortunato (Avanti) rolls a 7 down the straightaway to fall off the pace. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) drafts Fortunato to inch a little closer.

Spencer (USA) rolls an 8 and overshoots Turn 5 by 2. He has no tires or brakes left. Phillips (Chameleon) is 1 short of Turn 5. Tank Girl (USA) makes Turn 4.

Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls 3rd gear into Turn 7 and makes it. Gelatino (Goo) makes his 3rd stop in Turn 6.

Viscous (Goo) spends a gas and a brake to gear down for his second stop in Turn 6. Kravinoff (Chameleon) also makes his second stop.

Bun-Bun (Sluggy) makes Turn 6. Fortunato (Avanti) goes deep on his first stop with a 12. He has no gas left to slow down. Spencer (USA) is short of Turn 6.

Phillips (Chameleon) makes Turn 5. So does Tank Girl (USA).

Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls a 7 down the back stretch. Gelatino (Goo) nails Turn 7.

Viscous (Goo) and Kravinoff (Chameleon) make their third stops in Turn 6. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) makes his second. Fortunato (Avanti) goes deep again on his second stop with a 7 in 3rd gear.

Spencer (USA) makes his first stop in Turn 6 - nine spaces deep! Tank Girl (USA) and Phillips (Chameleon) are short of Turn 6.

Di Veloce (Avanti) rolls a 20 in 5th gear, but that's 1 space too far. He would have spun, so he spends a built-in Driver's Point to reroll and gets a 19 to nail the final turn.

Gelatino (Goo) gets a 7 and heads down the back stretch.

Viscous (Goo) and Kravinoff (Chameleon) both make Turn 7.

Fortunato (Avanti) spends a brake to stay in Turn 6. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) pulls up behind him with his third stop in the turn.

Spencer (USA) makes his second stop in Turn 6 in 2nd gear. Tank Girl (USA) makes her first stop. Phillips (Chameleon) is short.

Di Veloce (Avanti) crosses the line in 6th gear to win the race.

Gelatino (Goo) makes Turn 8. Viscous (Goo) uses a Driver Point to change an 18 (in 5th) to a 10 (in 4th). 18 was too close to the turn without getting in. Kravinoff (Chameleon) goes to 4th gear and gets an 11 to draft Viscous.

Fortunato (Avanti) makes Turn 7, along with Bun-Bun (Sluggy).

Spencer (USA) makes his third stop in Turn 6, but spins out. Tank Girl (USA) makes her second stop and Phillips (Chameleon) finally makes the turn, but buries herself in the process.

Gelatino (Goo) rolls a 30 to take 2nd place. The weather is rain.

Kravinoff (Chameleon) makes Turn 8. Viscous (Goo) rolls 4th gear and gets a 12 to make the turn (needed 10 or higher).

Fortunato (Avanti) gets a 10 down the back straightaway. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) also gets a 10 and drafts Fortunato.

Spencer (USA) finds 1st gear and is just short of Turn 7. Tank Girl (USA) makes her 3rd stop in Turn 6. Phillips (Chameleon) makes her second stop.

It's a drag race between Kravinoff (Chameleon) and Viscous (Goo) for third place. Kravinoff gets an 18, but it's not far enough to cross. Viscous gets an 18 - but he's 1 space short of drafting!

Bun-Bun (Sluggy) makes Turn 8 in 4th gear. Fortunato (Avanti) goes to 5th and gets a 19. A 20 would have spun him.

Spencer (USA makes his stop in Turn 7. Tank Girl (USA) does also and forces a precarious body roll against her partner. They're both ok, though.

Kravinoff (Chameleon) crosses in 3rd place. Viscous (Goo) takes 4th. Fortunato (Avanti) roars across the line for 5th place. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) is short of the line, but it's clear that he will take 6th.

Tank Girl (USA) rolls a 20. Weather goes back to changeable/rain. Spencer (USA) gets a 4 in 3rd gear. Phillips (Chameleon) passes him on the back stretch.

Bun-Bun (Sluggy) crosses. Tank Girl (USA) makes Turn 8. So does Phillips (Chameleon).

Tank Girl (USA) goes to 6th and gets a 22 to just make it across for 7th place. Phillips (Chameleon) crosses for 8th. And Spencer (USA) limps home for 9th.

LAP ONE LEADER
Vincitore di Veloce (Avanti) +1

RESULTS
1. Vincitore di Veloce (Avanti) 10+1 pts (19 total)
2. Jim Gelatino (Goo) 8 pts (17 total)
3. Dmitri Kravinoff (Chameleon) 6 pts (16 total)
4. Vinny Viscous (Goo) 5 pts (24 total)
5. Rullo Fortunato (Avanti) 4 pts (6 total)
6. Bun-Bun (Sluggy) 3 pts (3 total)
7. Tank Girl (USA) 2 pts (6 total)
8. Bobbie Phillips (Chameleon) 1 pt (18 total)
9.
Thread: Re: What are the "Special Rules" for the Indianapolis Track?

It's about running on the outside lane. Each time you go to the outside lane you rule for collision with the cement wall!! This only happens on the first space you go to that lane. If you keep on it you don't have to roll again. If you leave the outside lane when you get back to it you have to test again for collision.

Thread: Portland - Sharp Pencil League '06

RACE 14B - Portland
September 14, 2006

ABOUT THE LEAGUE
The Sharp Pencil League is in its sixth season. We award a Team Championship trophy and a Driver Championship Trophy at the end of the year. We have 10 teams that run two cars each. Therefore, each week, we split into two groups of five (running on tracks A and B). We will run 14 races in 2006.

Construction may only change after a DNF.

In addition to choice of tires, we allow drivers to choose whether to take downforce at the start of the race. This allows them to back up one space in the corners (if desired) and it shortens die rolls in 4th, 5th and 6th gear. (11 max in 4th, 18 max in 5th, 26 max in 6th.) A car cannot use downforce to back up a spot and stay in the corner when it would have otherwise overshot. A car cannot use downforce if it applies a brake.

Qualifying is by die roll, but each team is guaranteed to have a car in one of the first five spots. Upon pitting, a team may elect to take a long pit rather than try for a short pit. If he does so, he may restore one point of body damage. Pits are chosen by teams in reverse qualifying order.

Points are awarded to the top eight finishers and kept track of for the Team and Driver Championships. Driver Championship points will also determine the qualifying order of the last race of the season, in which the top five teams in the points championship will race on one track and the bottom five on the other.

TEAMS
Bartoni (98)
Green (83)
USA (79)
Guinness (71)
Rocket (58)

WEATHER
Sun-Rain-Sun-Changeable-Sun-Rain-Sun-Permanently Sunny

STARTING GRID
*Note that the starting grid was based on Driver
Championship Points. There was no qualifying at this
final race.

1. Mario Romero (Bartoni)
2. Lucky Spencer (USA)
3. Jacques Cousteau (Green)
4. David Evans (Guinness)
5. James (Rocket)
6. Erin Brockovich (Green)
7. Parnelli Stewart (Bartoni)
8. Paul Hewson (Guinness)
9. Jesse (Rocket)
10. Tank Girl (USA)

COMMENTS
The final race of the season! The bottom five teams
have been assembled together for the final race. Team
Bartoni is just one point behind Team Brainiacs (who
is racing Kyalami tonight) for 5th place. There's also
a battle for 7th place between Team Green and Team
USA.

At the start of the race, 5 cars have elected to take
hard tires, and the other 5 cars have chosen soft
tires. Only Team USA has elected to NOT take
downforce.

The first corner separates the pack, as three cars run
up front, three in the second pack and four in the
back. Lucky Spencer grabs the lead out of Turn 1.

The rain comes down as the drivers exit the 2nd
corner. This is going to slow the teams way down.

Spencer extends his lead into Turn 5, with four cars
chasing him, one stop back.

Cousteau catches up and passes Spencer in the final
turn of lap one. James and Evans also catch up to the
lead pack.

Stewart brings the sunshine back as he goes into the
last turn of lap one.

Evans skips the pits and takes the lap one leader
bonus point.

Four cars are setting the pace coming out of Turn 1,
with Team Rocket running 2nd and 3rd.

Rocket continues to run well, as Jesse takes the lead.

The rain returns as the lead cars are entering the
final turn. But this time, it doesn't last very long.

Jesse is able to keep it together to take the
checkered flag. Cousteau and James finish 2nd and 3rd,
respectively. That gives Rocket 74 points on the
season and puts the pressure on Guinness. He needs 2
more points to tie, but is currently running in 9th
and 10th place.

Meanwhile, Green's second-place finish wraps up 7th
place in the standings.

Tank Girl crosses the line in 4th, followed by Romero.
There's a battle for 6th between Spencer and Stewart.
Both cars are on their last body point. Stewart elects
to force a body check as they both overshoot the last
turn by a good margin. Spencer will fail on a 6 or
lower. He gets a 7. But Stewart is not as fortunate,
as he fails his check and crashes.

With the crash, Bartoni fails in his bid to capture
5th place.

Guinness moves up a place, but can't catch Brockovich
for 7th. Rocket hangs on and edges Guinness by a
point, moving out of the basement of the standings on
the final race of the season. Well done, Rocket!

EARNED DRIVER POINTS USED
James (x2)
Jesse
Cousteau
Stewart

LAP ONE LEADER
David Evans - Guinness (+1 point)

RESULTS
1. Jesse (Rocket) 10 pts (30 total)
2. Jacques Cousteau (Green) 8 pts (58 total)
3. James (Rocket) 6 pts (44 total)
4. Tank Girl (USA) 5 pts (14 total)
5. Mario Romero (Bartoni) 4 pts (74 total)
6. Lucky Spencer (USA) 3 pts (59 total)
7. Erin Brockovich (Green) 2 pts (35 total)
8. David Evans (Guinness) 1+1 pts (48 total)
9. Paul Hewson (Guinness) 0 pts (25 total)
DNF - Parnelli Stewart (Bartoni) 0 pts (28 total)

FINAL STANDINGS
1. Goo - 169 pts
2. Chameleon - 157 pts
3. Avanti - 137 pts
4. GT - 115 pts
5. Brainiacs - 106 pts
6. Bartoni - 102 pts
7. Green - 93 pts
8. USA - 87 pts
9. Rocket - 74 pts
10. Guinness - 73 pts

INJURIES
Parnelli Stewart hit his head on the steering wheel
when he crashed into Lucky Spencer. He suffered a
minor concussion. He should recover in plenty of time
before the start of the 2007 season.

UP NEXT
The league is finished for the season. The schedule
for 2007 has not been released, but expect the first
race to occur sometime in March.

Johnny Lightning (USA)

COMMENTS
Logan freezes on the start with a stalled car. Lead
changes in the first turn, as Spencer takes over. The
Bartoni cars jam up the first turn a bit, and Romero,
Stewart and Tesla all take body hits.

Spencer and Cousteau break away from the pack and
fight for the lead. Spencer is able to gain control in
the 5th turn. But Cousteau rolls 6th gear into turn 6
to retake the lead. Cousteau is the first into the
pits, with Spencer one stop behind.

Pit row gets crowded as Romero, Spencer and Tesla
jockey for position. The first lap has been raced
cleanly by everyone, with only four body hits - all
occuring in the first turn.

Cousteau is now two turns ahead by turn 3 of the
second lap. Preston takes a body hit in turn 1.

All in all, the second lap is rather quiet, with no
major body hits. Cousteau maintains his lead and takes
the victory.

EARNED DRIVER POINTS USED
Tesla (1)
Logan (1)
Stewart (1)
Lightning (1)

LAP ONE LEADER
Jacques Cousteau (Green) - 1 bonus point

RESULTS
1. Rullo Fortunato (Avanti)
2. Lucky Spencer (USA)
3. Bill Preston (Wyld Stallions)
4. David Evans (Guinness)
5. Jim Gelatino (Goo)
6. Vinny Viscous (Goo)
7. Paul Hewson (Guiness)
8. Vincitore di Veloce (Avanti)
9. Johnny Lightning (USA)
10. Ted Logan (Wyld Stallions)

COMMENTS:
Crazy start to this race as the field gets spread out a bit from the get-go. Lucky Spencer gets a slow
start. As does Bill Preston. As does Paul Hewson. And Vincitore di Veloce. Four cars roll a slow start! Wow! Unprecedented!

Fortunato is the big beneficiary, as he makes the second turn and puts a full stop between him and second place. Fortunato maintains his lead into the 2-stop turn, with a pack of four cars trailing one stop behind. Going into the pits, Fortunato is still one turn ahead, but heads for fresh tires. Meanwhile, Johnny Lightning rolls a 15, which puts him one space short of the corner. So he uses a Driver Point - and rolls another 15!

Fortunato gets a fast pit and has the lead at the halfway point. Spencer gets out of the pits next, as Gelatinous must do a long pit to work on his damaged engine.

Fortunato maintains his one stop advantage on Spencer through the back stretch of lap two. Spencer is a stop ahead of Gelatino in second. Behind Gelationo is a pack of four cars. Both Wyld Stallion cars have run
into bad luck and are trailing the field in 9th and 10th position.

In the four-car pack fighting for fourth, both Evans and di Veloce are down to their final body point as they move into the 2-stop corner.

Meanwhile, up ahead, Fortunato continues to nail the corners and begins to coast across the finish line. He
leads wire-to-wire, having never been passed the entire race.

Spencer easily takes 2nd and it's Gelatino all alone in third. There's a heated race for 4th, but Viscous holds off Evans. Guinness gets more bad news, as di Veloce passes Hewson just before the line for 6th place.

It's our first clean race of the season, as there are no DNFs, despite many engine rolls.

RESULTS
Lap One Leader: Fortunato (Avanti) + 1 point

1.
Thread: Session Report

Six cars started out for a two lap race on map #24, Portland, Oregon. Pole positions were Everett, Nathan, me, Dennis, Jeremy, and Dave. We picked the map because it was shorter than the others but had a decent number of turns.

Trouble started in the first turn which was a three stop turn. The turn occurs just as you start to gain speed and no one made it out of the turn without losing tread off their tires. Dennis suffered a bodyworks point due to a collision. Next turn was a 2 stop turn followed by two quick one turn turns. Jeremy found himself with only one tire space left before spinout and no brakes after exiting the two stop turn. In addition to that he was still in fifth place and thought his only chance to try to redeem himself was to try to hit the one stoppers in fifth gear. No luck with that and he became the first casualty of the race not even halfway through the first lap.

Dennis was having his own brand of bad luck. Around the time Jeremy crashed, Dennis suffered his second bodyworks point.

Dave suffered from not being in the right space position. He stayed in last place all throughout the first lap and wasn't able to pass in the turns since we had them clogged up.

Dennis and I jockeyed for the lead through the first half but I was able to break out with some good rolls in the back stretch. As we passed out of the last turn Nathan decided to try to gain speed since he had dropped back into the third spot and rolled a high number, which resulted in a crash and burn.

The other four of us made it around a second time. I was able to keep my lead and cross the finish line a good three or four turns before anyone else. Everett passed second, Dennis finished the next turn, and Dave limped across two turns later.

We found the track to be good fun

Track 25, Wisconsin, has many choices that straddle the choice between two dice, whether to come short of a curve or overshoot a curve.
