Thread: Circuit 16 - Zeltweg or Spielberg???

Recently, while researching the thickness of different cardstocks used in the Formula De circuit expansions, I discovered something interesting. The Austrian circuit (circuit 16) was produced with two different names: Zeltweg and Spielberg.

Why two different names? The Austrian circuit, located in Spielberg, Styria, originally known as the Österreichring, opened in 1970. It quickly gained a reputation as being a dangerous track due to the short run-off area at a 180-degree right hand turn. Due to continued safety concerns the track was retired after the 1987 season. This older circuit, the Österreichring, was often referred to as Zeltweg, which is a larger and better known town than Spielberg.

The circuit remained abandoned until the mid-90s, when it was rebuilt with shorter stretches and less dangerous corners. The circuit was renamed A-1 Ring and was correctly referred to as being in Spielberg.

The circuit in Formula De is actually the A-1 Ring. Therefore, the Spielberg label is more appropriate than Zeltweg. It appears that the different names were used in different print runs. So, Zeltweg or Spielberg, take your pick.

Biomage

Thread: A1 on A1 (Zeltweg)

The A1 Ring is a very cool track. It consists of 9 corners, the second of which is a wicked two-stop hairpin. There is only one other two-stop corner, so this longish track runs very quickly, and no one is ever safe in the lead.

This was one of the best races we've had.

Time Trials:

Our time trials were conducted in the rain, so our times were not great, and there was lots of gearing down for the corners. We didn't have too many overshoots, but there was a lot of shifting. The results were:

Bumble Bee (P)
Fireball (P)
Phoenix (C)
Demi-Vert (P)
Noel (C)
Shadow (C)

P=Penny
C=Me (Chris)

Car Construction:

Weather: Changeable

With the possibility of rain, and having raced this track in a one-lap and two-lap race, we mostly went with three body points. Due to the potential for shifting down, we mostly went with four gas, and skimped on engine and suspension points, with the standard four brake points.

As for tires, we did a lot of head scratching--the chance of rain was 25%. Bumble Bee and Phoenix opted for soft tires; Fireball, Demi-Vert, and Noel opted for hard tires; Shadow opted for wet tires.

Lap 1:

Everyone got off to a normal start. Bumble Bee was the only one to catch the first corner, but on this track, being a little further back in the pack can actually help, although it didn't help Phoenix much as he had to gear down into the first corner.

The fun really begins in the second corner when you enter the two-stop hairpin. The long way around you only have ten spaces; the short way five. Immediately preceeding this corner is a nice long straightaway, so you have to think carefully about how you negotiate the straight and the corner.

This corner was completely blocked for the last two cars (Demi-Vert and Shadow) so they had to gear down and wait a turn.

Noel pulled into second but Bumble Bee was on fire and was two corners ahead. A double collision occured on the fourth corner and two of my cars (Noel and Pheonix) each took a point of damage. The danger spots were the last spot on the outside lane, and the one immediately after it, so they didn't pose a big problem in the race.

The only other two-stop corner is the fifth, and coming out of that corner the order was:

Bumble Bee
Noel
Phoenix
Fireball
Demi-Vert
Shadow

Bumble Bee had a solid lead, but everyone else was very tight--all five of the other cars ended up in the sixth corner at the same time, which only has a total of nine spaces in its three lanes.

There was another collision in the seventh corner, leaving a danger spot in the middle lane, and one of my cars (Shadow) was already out of gas by the eighth corner!

The only car to make a pit stop was Shadow, who changed his Wet tires for soft, and got two gas points back.

Lap 2:

Heading into the second lap the order was:

Bumble Bee
Fireball
Shadow
Noel
Phoenix
Demi-Vert

Bumble Bee was already in the second corner by the time the second place Fireball was into the first corner, with a 28 space straightaway between them. In a three lap race with this many twists and turns though, the chances of Bumble Bee being a runaway leader were not great.

Phoenix gained alot of ground, from fifth place to second, on the straightaway by using sixth gear and then gearing all the way down to third in the hairpin.

Demi-Vert was starting to trail, and his situation was not improved by having to gear down to first in the hairpin.

By the fifth corner, two cars had joined Bumble Bee, although they were still one stop behind, and his lead was shrinking. The order leaving this corner was:

Bumble Bee
Fireball
Phoenix
Noel
Shadow
Demi-Vert

Bumble Bee came up short on the seventh corner, and Fireball passed him. His lead lengthened as Bumble Bee and all three of my cars came up short on the eighth corner.

There had been quite a bit of wear and tear on the cars so everyone was planning on stopping in the pits for repairs, except for Shadow who was only planning for a quick stop. Fireball came up one short to get into his pits, and then Phoenix had to roll for a weather check: RAIN.

In addition to repairs, everyone was now equipping their cars with wet tires.

Lap 3:

The order going into the third lap was:

Fireball
Noel
Shadow
Bumble Bee
Phoenix
Demi-Vert

Noel was immediately on Fireball's tail in the second corner, but took a second point of body damage, having used his repair points for brakes and gas.

All cars, except for Demi-Vert, were now in the race. The hairpin was made very treacherous by the rain and three cars overshot it. Fireball used his last gas in this corner, as four cars crowded this corner all at once.

Unfortuantely, Noel took his third body point at the end of the hairpin and was eliminated.

Fireball took a collision in the fourth corner, which was now a mess with three danger spots. Coming out of the fourth corner, however, Phoenix took the lead! It was the first time in this race that one of my cars was leading.

In the fifth corner, Shadow used the last of his brakes and spun out leaving the corner, Going back down to first gear, his time in third place was limited. Leaving the fifth corner the order was:

Pheonix
Bumble Bee
Shadow
Fireball
Demi-Vert

Bumble took the lead back in the seventh corner, but Phoenix regained the lead shortly after. Then the weather changed to: CHANGEABLE, so the corners would not be so treacherous.

Phoenix took the inside lane on the ninth corner, but Bumble Bee overshot the corner to take the lead back and win the race.

Shadow, limping along with no tires, no gas, and no brakes just barely overshot a corner and was eliminated.

The final results were:

Bumble Bee (10)
Pheonix (6)
Fireball (4)
Demi-Vert (3)
Shadow (eliminated: tires)
Noel (eliminated: body)

By the end of the race there were eight danger spots, all due to collisions or cars being eliminated.

This was a very exciting race, with the order changing, and the threat of changing weather ever present. This is our favourite track so far.

Thread: There's No Substitute For German Efficiency (Hockenheim)

Hockenheim is an interesting looking track. The start/finish line is sandwiched between two corners, and if you were racing ten cars, the last of them would actually start around the last corner.

It is also a very efficiently laid-out track, and you do not have to work within a psycho/consevative dichotomy. While I like to race on tracks that call for lethal choices, Hockenheim forces you to push your car, not punish your car, and is a nice change.

My wife and I race three cars each and use all of the advanced rules except slipstreaming.

Time Trials: Our time trials were conducted in sunny weather and were extremely fast, with four out of six cars not overshooting a single corner. We had a three-way tie for first which we resolved with a d20. The results were as follows:

Wonder Boy (C)
Bumble Bee (P)
Shadow (C)
Blue Bullet (P)
Lucky (C)
Turtle (P)
C = Chris (me)
P = Penny

Car Construction:

Weather: Sunny

In our one-lap, two-lap, and time trials, the track did not appear very punishing, so we went with two body and two suspension points. We split on 2 or 3 points for engines, and mostly went with four gas. Only Shadow and Turtle opted for hard tires.

Lap 1:

Shadow stalled off the start as the rest of the pack headed for the first corner, which is almost immediately off the start. Bumble Bee took an early lead, and by the time she left the second corner, Turtle was in second place, with all but Shadow, feeling the effects of the stall, close behind.

The third corner is the big three-stop on this track and has a maximum of 21 spaces. Bumble Bee and Turtle continued to lead through this corner, and even managed to catch the fourth corner after leaving it. The order out of the third corner was:

Turtle
Bumble Bee
Shadow
Lucky
Wonder Boy
Blue Bullet

The fourth corner is a chicane, and corners 5, 6, and 7 are tight, one-stop bends immediately before the finish. Ideally, you can negotiate these last three corners in fourth, and come out the last one in fifth.

On this lap, Shadow and Lucky managed to catch up to Bumble Bee, with Shadow in second place.

Neither Shadow, Bumble Bee, nor Turtle stopped in the pits. Lucky did a quick stop for tires, while Wonder Boy and Blue Bullet did full stops for tires and repairs.

Lap 2:

Shadow managed to pass Turtle on the straightaway into the first corner, so the order was:

Shadow
Turtle
Lucky
Bumble Bee
Wonder Boy
Blue Bullet

Leaving the pits can be very tricky, as Wonder Boy discovered. It is impossible to get into the outside lane of the first corner from the pits, and Wonder Boy had left the pits in fourth, geared down to third, then overshot the first corner, undoing most of his repairs and new tires.

Shadow managed to lengthen his lead, leaving the second corner in fifth gear and going deep into the three-stop third corner. Wonder Boy took a collision point in corner two, Lucky had taken one earlier, but neither danger spot was in a critical area.

Leaving the third corner, Shadow had a solid lead, and the order was:

Shadow
Bumble Bee
Turtle
Lucky
Wonder Boy
Blue Bullet

This order remained for the rest of the lap, and into the beginning of third lap with Shadow in the lead, Bumble Bee and Turtle one stop behind, with Lucky and Wonder Boy close, and Blue Bullet trailing. Blue Bullet took a point of engine damage on corner five, leaving the third danger spot on the track.

Only Blue Bullet stopped in the pits--a quick stop.

Lap 3:

Shadow, the first car in the race to do so, tried sixth gear between corner 1 and 2, but fell short, as did Lucky.

Blue Bullet then made a spectacular move. Wonder Boy had to seriously gear down to get into the first corner, but Blue Bullet had hit in fifth; then maxed out in sixth to fly into the second corner and fifth place. He then rolled in fifth to go into the third corner, and, in a blaze of glory, blew his engine! Penny had given her other two cars three engine points, but only two to Blue Bullet so he was eliminated.

Leaving the third corner the order was:

Shadow
Turtle
Lucky
Bumble Bee
Wonder Boy

Turtle was down to no gas, no brakes, and only a single tire, which was not bad considering he had not made a pit stop the whole race. Shadow was in excellent shape, and he had not stopped in the pits either.

Shadow was held up a little on the fifth corner, but recovered well. Lucky however, shifted badly on corner four and five, and he was neck and neck with Turtle, who did a much better job negotiating the final corner and pulled ahead.

The final results were:

Shadow (10)
Turtle (6)
Lucky (4)
Bumble Bee (3)
Wonder Boy (2)
Blue Bullet (eliminated--engine damage)

First and second place went to the two cars that raced with hard tires throughout and never made a pit stop. As Hockenheim is not a harsh track, I think that hard tires with no pit stops is a viable strategy.

Over the course of three laps, Shadow's stall at the beginning of the race, and Turtle's sixth starting position were entirely negated. This is a very interesting track.

Thread: Zeltweg - Sharp Pencil League '06

RACE 12A - Zeltweg (16)
August 17, 2006

ABOUT THE LEAGUE
The Sharp Pencil League is in its sixth season. We award a Team Championship trophy and a Driver Championship Trophy at the end of the year. We have 10 teams that run two cars each. Therefore, each week, we split into two groups of five (running on tracks A and B). We will run 14 races in 2006. All races are two laps.

We have several house rules. The most notable one is that we do not roll for body in the straightaway. Instead, we score a body hit in the turn if the black die rolled is equal to or less than the number of stops in the turn (ie - 3 stop turn = hit on 1, 2 or 3). Body checks are made for all adjacent cars, including those that pull in front. We also add one to the body check roll in rain and for every space that is overshot.

We allow teams to construct their own cars, using 21 construction points. We do not use suspension rules. Both cars on a team must be constructed identically. Construction may only change after a DNF.

In addition to choice of tires, we allow drivers to choose whether to take downforce at the start of the race. This allows them to back up one space in the corners (if desired) and it shortens die rolls in 4th, 5th and 6th gear. (11 max in 4th, 18 max in 5th, 26 max in 6th.) A car cannot use downforce to back up a spot and stay in the corner when it would have otherwise overshot. A car cannot use downforce if it applies a brake.

Qualifying is by die roll, but each team is guaranteed to have a car in one of the first five spots. Upon pitting, a team may elect to take a long pit rather than try for a short pit. If he does so, he may restore one point of body damage. Pits are chosen by teams in reverse qualifying order.

Points are awarded to the top eight finishers and kept track of for the Team and Driver Championships. Driver Championship points will also determine the qualifying order of the last race of the season, in which the top five teams in the points championship will race on one track and the bottom five on the other.

In addition to championship points, drivers earn "Driver Points (DP)" One driver point allows a car to reroll one die, one time. The top three finishers at each race earn a full Driver Point. Any car that crosses the finish line behind them earns 0.5 DPs. Cars that DNF receive zero. Teams may also build one DP into their car at the cost of two construction points.

TEAMS
Chameleon (125)
Avanti (108)
Brainiacs (89)
Bartoni (87)
Rocket (49)

WEATHER
Rain

QUALIFYING
1. Nick Tesla (Brainiacs)
2. James (Rocket)
3. Dmitri Kravinoff (Chameleon)
4. Mario Romero (Bartoni)
5. Rullo Fortunato (Avanti)
6. Vincitore di Veloce (Avanti)
7. Bobbi Phillips (Chameleon)
8. Jesse (Rocket)
9. Parnelli Stewart (Bartoni)
10. Al Einstein (Brainiacs)

COMMENTS
Jesse stalls.

Tesla makes the first turn all alone. But he forgets
what gear he needs to shift into and rolls 5th gear
hot and deep into the 2-stop turn. He pulls up just
one space from the end, forcing him to burn 5 tires
and 3 brakes when he follows it with an 8 in 3rd gear.

Kravinoff nails the 2-stop corner and quickly passes
Tesla. Everyone else comes up short. The corner
quickly bogs down, with a couple of cars shifting into
2nd gear. Team Rocket takes a hit to both cars, as the
turn gets quite congested.

Kravinoff makes it into Turn 3, and Tesla comes up
short. We have a new leader, and it's going to be
difficult to catch him.

Fortunato rolls a 4 in 3rd gear to come up one space
short of Turn 4.

Kravinoff continues to dominate, with Tesla one stop
back, followed by Romero and Einstein. Oops, Tesla is
now two stops back, as he comes up short of Turn 8.

The pack catches a little luck when Kravinoff comes up
just short of his pits - and curses himself for
selecting the blue pits over the red ones. But he
still has enough of a cushion to lead at the halfway
mark.

Tesla and Romero both decide to long pit to restore
their badly worn cars.

Fortunato can't find the range on any die and crashes
coming out of Turn 8, after rolling the dreaded 8 on
the 3rd gear. He was pushing it a little harder
tonight, with only three races left in the season.
That all but eliminates Team Avanti from any hope of
contending for the cup this season.

Meanwhile, Jesse continues his own sado-masochistic
approach to the track (and the season). He alternates
between coming up one short of the turn, then rolling
the highest possible to go over. It's really not an
effective strategy.

DiVeloce elects not to pit. Only Kravinoff and
Phillips are able to short pit, as everyone else
either elects to long pit or fails on their die roll.
Wow.

Einstein is having problems. He must roll a 4 in Turn
2 after getting there in 6th gear. He rolls 3rd gear -
and gets a 4! Bad news, though. He forgot about the
rain slide and spins out anyway. Well, it could have
been worse.

Phillips has some interesting die rolling of her own.
She's come way out of Turn 2 and has to make a body
check. If she rolls a 7 or less, she's eliminated
(although she can use one DP to reroll). She skates by
with a 9 and is still in the hunt for a podium finish.

Meanwhile, her teammate Kravinoff is having no trouble
out in front. It's clearly his race, unless something
amazing happens.

DiVeloce is two stops behind, but only has 1 tire and
2 brakes. A group of cars is 1+ stops behind him,
followed by Stewart and Jesse, who are far, far
behind.

Meanwhile, Einstein spins again in Turn 3. Whee!

Kravinoff comes up short of Turn 8, but remains two
stops ahead. DiVeloce burns up all remaining tires and
brakes coming out of Turn 5, but hangs onto a gas.

Phillips falls short of Turn 5, as Romero surges into
3rd place all alone.

James comes up one space short of Turn 5, after
purposely overshooting Turn 4 by two spaces to help
his odds. He had strongly considered going three over.

Stewart crashes out of Turn 4. Jesse crashes out of
Turn 3. Both are unharmed.

Kravinoff cruises to the checkered flag. Di Veloce
pulls in for 2nd place. The race is for 3rd between
Phillips and Romero. Both make Turn 8 together.

Romero rolls big into Turn 9 and goes 5 spaces out -
saving those tires for just the right moment. He
crosses in third, with Phillips right behind him.

Both Brainiacs cars elect to gear down and cruise home
in first gear.

Chameleon, who entered the night just one point behind
Team Goo for the overall lead, has really put the
pressure on, securing a 1st and 4th place finish.
Things are far from finished for Team Goo over on the
Shanghai track. Will it be enough to vault Chameleon
into the lead with just two races to go?

EARNED DRIVER POINTS USED
Stewart
Einstein
Phillips

LAP ONE LEADER
Kravinoff - Chameleon (+1 point)

RESULTS
1. Dmitri Kravinoff (Chameleon) 10+1 pts (76 total) 1.0 DP (2.0 total)
2. Vincitore di Veloce (Avanti) 8 pts (51 total) 1.0 DP (3.0 total)
3.
Thread: Hockenheim - Sharp Pencil League '06

In addition to choice of tires, we allow drivers to choose whether to take extra downforce at the start of the race.

If he does so, he may restore one point of damage to any area of his car.

RACE 7B - Hockenheim
June 8, 2006

TEAMS
Goo (77)
Avanti (59)
Brainiacs (47)
GT (41)
Green (38)

WEATHER
Changeable - Rain - Sunny - Permanently Sunny

QUALIFYING
1. Rullo Fortunato (Avanti)
2. Nick Tesla (Brainiacs)
3. Jim Gelatino (Goo)
4. Dirk O'Shea (GT)
5. Erin Brockovich (Green)
6. Kirk O'Shea (GT)
7. Vincitore di Veloce (Avanti)
8. Vinny Viscous (Goo)
9. Jacques Cousteau (Green)
10. Al Einstein (Brainiacs)

COMMENTS
Fortunato, the pole sitter, gets off to a slow start.
But Tesla misses the turn in 2nd gear and has to stay
there for the next roll. Gelatino makes it into Turn 2
all alone and gets out ahead of the pack.

Kirk O'Shea drafts a car to move up, then di Veloce
drafts three on the first straightaway. But Einstein
and Cousteau from the back are able to move ahead by
jumping into 5th gear.

Cousteau rolls a 20 and brings the rain. He's always
raced a lot better in the water. But Einstein rolls a
20 right behind him and turns it back to sunny.

Six cars jam the corner in turn 2, blocking out
Fortunato, Viscous and Brockovich.

Gelatino makes Turn 3 and puts some distance on the
pack. Dirk O'Shea, di Veloce and Einstein all make
Turn 3 and block the others out.

Di Velcoce burns a Driver Point trying to catch up
with Gelatino in Turn 4, but comes up short.

Coming out of the final turn, Gelatino rolls a 5th
gear, but comes up short of Turn 1 and decides to pit.
But it's a long pit. That opens the door for Einstein,
who purposely overshoots the turn by 3 in order to
pass the pits and roll first the next round - securing
the +1 bonus.

Meanwhile, Kirk and Dirk keep piling up the body hits.

Einstein leaves Turn 1 in 5th gear and has the lead
all alone. But he comes up short of Turn 3, and the
race is on again, as Gelatino catches right back up.

Meanwhile, the other teams are finding the pits a
little difficult to maneuver through. The front
straightaway is so short, there is no way to use the
high lane of Turn 1 when exiting pit road. So some
cars are creeping through the turn, while others are
burning up the tires they just took on.

Einstein and Gelatino run side-by-side through Turn 3
and it is clear that these two will finish at the top,
barring a crash. Tesla, di Veloce and Kirk O'Shea all
make Turn 2 together and are battling for 3rd. But
Tesla drops off after going very deep into Turn 2.

Fortunato nails the third turn, rolls a 7 in 4th gear,
uses downforce and rolls a 5th gear for his 3rd stop.
On his way out, he smacks into Cousteau and knocks him
out of the race. But he's able to exit the turn in 6th
gear and move up through the ranks.

Gelatino nails the last turn and Einstein has no tires
to pass. Gelatino takes the checkered flag. Einstein
comes up just short - then crosses the line in style
by gearing all the way down to first gear.

Kirk O'Shea has the lead going into the last turn. He
rolls 4th gear and overshoots it by two in the middle
lane. Di Veloce shifts into 5th gear and takes the
outside, overshooting by 2 and getting ahead of Kirk
by a nose - and securing 3rd place.

Fortunato is all alone for 5th place. Meanwhile, a
battle rages for 8th place, as Viscous and Brockovich
fight for the final point. Brockovich rolls 5th into
turn 6, then 4th into the final turn. But she comes up
a bit short, and Team Goo is able to tack on 1 more
point to his lead.

Goo also gets another bonus, as Gelatino now leads the
Driver Champoinship points.

EARNED DRIVER POINTS USED
Fortunato x 1
di Veloce x 1
Gelatino x 2
Einstein x 1
D. O'Shea x 1

LAP ONE LEADER
Al Einstein (Brainiacs) - 1 bonus point

RESULTS
1. Jim Gelatino (Goo) 10 pts (52 total) 1 DP (1 total)
2. Al Einstein (Brainiacs) 8 +1 pts (23 total) 1 DP (1 total)
3. Vincitore di Veloce (Avanti) 6 pts (22 total) 1 DP (1 total)
4. Kirk O'Shea (GT) 5 pts (11 total) 0.5 DP (1 total)
5.
