Thread: Re: User Review

You got to be kidding me!!

I spent some six months in Finland during winter 2004/05 there I learned about this game. And if I own it at this point it's only because I had birthday during my time there and a bunch of exchange students gave it to me as a gift... I played it during my birthday and thats it... NEVER again. This game is soooo BAD it's painful!! Everything about it is bad, the playing mechanics! The graphics! Even the missconception about the african continent is at its worse!! It is dreddful!! Pure luck!! There is nothing to analyze!!

I absolutely HATE THIS GAME!!

I gave it a really RED 0.01!!

Hey everybody!! DON'T TRUST THIS GUY!! HE'S A FINN!!!!

Thread: Re: 'Kari Mannerla' father of 'Star of Africa' dies at age 76

The game has never really been out of print in the Nordic countries, and is has been available in most European countries, so it is hard to believe that half of the games should be sold in Finland alone.

In Denmark alone (same population as Finland) is the game as popular as Monopoly and regularly quoted. In 2004 there was even build a theater play based upon the game: http://tinyurl.com/oxxsp

Thread: 'Kari Mannerla' father of 'Star of Africa' dies at age 76

Kari Mannerla has passed away on 12th of July after a battle with cancer.

Mannerla is known for developing the Star of Africa before he was 20 at 1950's. The game has been sold for about 3.5 milion copies from which about 50% counts for outside Finland sales.

I for one grew up with this game and it is one of the earliest board games I can remember, which was played until the tokens and the money weared thin.

I just wanted to show my respect here.

My condolences to his family. He will be missed.

Thread: Leave the horseshoes for the end game

A variant I've been trying with my son.

When a horseshoe is found it is left where it was found, face side up. After the diamond is found other players can pick up found horseshoes (with normal pick up rules) and race for the finish.

Players are less likely to race forward to find the diamond, but the end game is a lot more interesting.

At least it messes with established strategies making the game a bit different.

Thread: User Review

This game is a true classic, but despite what other people tell you, its not a kiddie game.

After a few games you will notice that it has rather wide set of different strategies. How deep into africa are you willing to go, are you using planes or boats, or do you travel by foot. The money is really relevant, and you have many ways to spend it. Analyze how your opponents start their adventure and try to find a path that others havent explored already. It can get really tricky if you have experienced players along.

Of course luck has a role in the game, but with wits and skill you can get thru many hazards and newbie players.

We have played this game for years with my friends, along Risk, Chess, Monopoly, and many others. It still holds the lead because its simple, fastpaced and fun. Its one of the best ways to spend a spare hour with a bunch of friends.

trust me on this one!

Roope Seppälä

Thread: User Review

I played Afrikan tähti a week ago, for the first time in many years. I had fond memories of the game, but the truth was less sweet.
Afrikan tähti ("The Star of Africa", after the diamond) is a real classic. If you ask your average Finn to name a board game, I'm willing to bet they'll name it. It's a pity, really, because Afrikan tähti is definitely a children's game and therefore board games in general seem like a child's play.
Afrikan tähti is about finding a diamond in Africa. Players move on a map of Africa by throwing dice. One can also fly from city to city, but that costs extra. In each city is a token, upside down. To flip a token costs money, or then you can try to roll 4-6 to open it for free.
Tokens contain blanks, horseshoes, robbers and gemstones. Horseshoes are worthless in the early game and are discarded. Finding a robber costs a player all his or her money. Gemstones are of variable worth and sold immediately. Except one: the legendary diamond Star of Africa.
When someone finds the Star, a race begins. Player with the Star tries to deliver to one of the starting cities, while the other players try to find a horseshoe. Player, who first enters a starting city with either the Star or a horseshoe wins the game.
That's it, it's a simple game. But fun, sure. However, as it basically a roll and move race, there's a heavy amount of luck included. There's little strategic planning one can do. That's fine for kids, but adults should want more.
Reiner Knizia's Africa is similar, what comes to theme or mechanics, and is far superior game. Africa is a gorgeous game - Afrikan tähti looks terrible. I haven't seen the latest editions, but the one I played had a thin cardboard map and very flimsy tokens. It's really poor quality when compared to your average German game.
Still - if the game were bad, it wouldn't be in print. It's a great game for kids.
