Thread: Re: Question: a problem of geometry

Hi

I'm wondering in the custodian "capture" of a Guard or Queen, must the two pieces performing the "capture" be located on the same concentric hex ring as the piece being captured? (Or can one or more be on adjaent rings?)

And more generally, must the two pieces performing the "capture" be on opposite sides of the hex cell of the piece being captured? (Or do they need only be on any two adjacent sides of the cell?)

(I'm saying "custodian capture" but I do understand there are no real captures in Queen's Guard.)

Do you know a good, detailed rules source for Queen's Guard in English?

Thank you!!

-catalincream

Herr Niemand wrote:
I'm sorry to say that you are mistaken.

In order to win, you must have your Queen in the center hex surrounded by all of her guards. If even one hex in the ring is open, your opponent can remove your guards one-by-one to the outer ring.

It is indeed possible for the Queen to be "sandwiched" when in the central hex by flanking opposing guards. In fact, moving your Queen right to the center without support from her guards is a good way to get your Queen sent back to the outer ring.

We have found that often the best strategy is to delay moving your Queen and guards into the center first. Instead, concentrate on sending your opponents pieces back to the outer ring.

Hope this helps.

It's the part about "surrounded by all her guards" that I missed! Thank you.

Thread: Question: a problem of geometry

I acquired this game not more than a year ago and, as I always do with a new game, started by soloing it to get the "feel" of the game. I played the standard rules with the pieces all starting in the outer-most ring of spaces.

Now, the board is a hexagon made up of hexagonal spaces. The centrer-most square in enclosed in a ring of spaces; then that is similarly enclosed, and so forth, until one has a radius of 6 spaces so that every space of the outer ring is the sixth space from the middle.

Now, the obvious first move is to move one's queen directly toward the center square. What I have found is that since capture is custodial so that the queen must be between to guards so that the three pieces form a straight line in order to be captured, if the queen moves directly toward the center of the board each time, it is impossible to capture her. Thus, whoever moves first wins so long as that player just moves his queen directly toward the center.

This fits withthe traditional rules as I understand them, for which one may refer to the leaflet file below.

What am I missing?

Thread: Re: print board

My leaflet in the files section has the rules, but the A5 format wasn't big enough for a board (unless you've got very small pieces)! If you have access to R C Bell's Board and Table Games from Many Civilizations, volume 2 (or the single volume edition), there are useful instructions on how to mark out your own board.

Thread: Math Pentathlon version

The Queens and Guards game for fourth and fifth graders is a version of this game. Math Pentathlon is a nationwide math enrichment program that features annual district tournaments. In our school it's a weekly afterschool club. The abstract strategy games promote logic and computational skills.
