I second the recommendation of Willard. Excellent prices for the same tournament-calibre discs that are near double the price at MrCrokinole's site, and excellent customer service to boot (I had a complaint abut the paint on one colour of discs I ordered - he investigated, found a faulty overpainted batch, and sent me a new set in that colour from a different supplier free of charge).

I just got mine from Willard. $8.50 for 24 discs and 7-8 dollar shipping to Iowa seemed pretty good to me. The discs are great. He also had blue and yellow discs in stock when I ordered in addition to what he shows on the website.

Can someone point me to an affordable source of crokinole discs? It appears that Thoughthammer and Timewellspent are out. Is there an embargo or something I don't know about? Paybacks for the olympics?

Dave, you really need to position for early release of the game. My family knows better than to hold presents received early as hostage - especially when I know about them. Heck! I was so happy to finally get one like this (I was also looking at Mr. Crokinole's Eagle version with the same coloring) that I just told my family they didn't even need to get me anything now for my birthday in October or Christmas. That being said, I never would've said that if it meant not having the Crokinole board for the next few months.

The Boss finally broke down!

My brother and his wife and their kids came over yesterday and I mentioned to them all that my wife was torturing me by keeping that beautiful board under wraps. At first The Boss gave me dirty looks, but then my sister-in-law mentioned that my brother does the same thing with gifts and she no longer makes him wait for his birthday. After that I buttered up The Boss with hugs and kisses and she gave in but promised she's never getting anything for me that early again. I felt a little guilty and told her how she's the coolest wife in the world about a hundred or three times and all is good now. We played last night and she beat my butt! She likes that game, so yeah - all is good.

If you have been married very long, all you would have had to do is make a deal with her. Either she let you open the box or she had to give you sex every night for 5 weeks. You would have had the board out and playing by dinner

This is just a friendly FYI - I wouldn't use Pledge. Stan Hilinski sent a note with the board and he mentions this:

Fantastic. While never playing Crokinole with my grandfather, he did make lots of different wooden dexterity games. My fondest memories of him were from the countless hours he spent playing with me as a small child.

As it turns out, my Grandmother gave me that board earlier this year. Absolutely priceless - easily my most prized game. It has my grandpa's name carved into it. I suspect that the game is over 50 years old.

I got my Crokinole board in person from the Hillinski brothers last weekend and it's gorgeous! Packed beautifully in the materials they used for transporting them to an event which were then used to take it home in my van - packed same way as if it was being shipped.

Carl told me how to care for the board. Mainly because Pledge makes the surface quite slick, slick enough that I like it.

And it is not nearly as messy as powders like MESPI.

Yes, carnauba wax! I heard that's the safest, cleanest and best solution. I'm definitely going with carnauba wax.

The board will come nicely prepped for play, but after a few months, I highly recommend good old carnauba wax! It restored my board to like-new, so far as friction was concerned.

Congrats on the upcoming nuptuals! I see you're a Dead Head. You'll appreciate that I was considering asking the Hilinskis to make a custom board with a Penny Hauffe painting of a Steal Your Face (If she agreed to do it of course - I never got that far). Ultimately the price difference of a board with a custom painting led me to go for Deep Serious. I certainly have no regrets as Serious is a beauty (at least from the pics - cause I can't even see the dang thing up close and personal yet!).

I also considered a custom board with the veneer deck like Ambition or Indecision. They're gorgeous! Again, the price difference made that decision for me. Plus Carl said they only make veneers October through May due to the way the workshop is heated.

Don't get me wrong, the veneer, Hauffe hand-painted and wood inlay boards are well worth the price considering the one-of-a-kind beautiful heirloom you'll get and if we could've squeezed the budget a little more, we would've...

Mom and dad have a board. It's kinda beat-up but still servicable. So I have like only the most basic idea of how to play... it looks like curling so I figured it'd be something like that... close.

Dad ran through the instructions and he and mom did a few flicks to get us going and then with our little girl Karolyn helping out we started the game. First to a 100 was the scoring. I'd do a round by round game but let's be honest... you want to know how badly I got smacked by the folks don't ya?

Highlights of the game... first flick of the game I got a stone/biscuit into the center... one of two during the game that scored. After that I managed to shoot stones off the board almost dinging dad, Kim and Karolyn. I flicked a few that moved about an inch and some that went right through the house. I love this game! Kim was as bad as me but she did have some really good shots. Karolyn who is only two was allowed some lattitude in placing her stones... she didn't hit anything but was great at placing stones and applauding herself afterwards. Mom and Dad are both seasoned players and thus had no probs making tough hits... dad played pool in his early years and was great at doing angles and taking out covered stones with little effort.

By the time the game was over I think we had scored about 50 points. I'm looking for a board for our home now... I think this is a friendly family oriented game that anyone would enjoy as long as they're willing to take some time to learn the very simple rules.

After having made a handful of boards, I can say that the ditch and rails are not a significant part of the effort/expense. Its the finishing of the deck that is tedious and costly.

Now that I've had time to think about it, you kind of need the ditch.
When you flick a carrom and it goes off the board, you need somewhere to catch it. I wouldn't want to risk scratching up my carroms or getting dirt on them as the dirt might not come off and mar the nice deck I'm playing on.
