Thread: Re: Beyond Valor old copy or better go with 3rd edition

I picked up BV1 for these reasons:

1) I own SL and have the other mapboards (#1-4)

2) BV1 can be had on ebay for a fraction of the cost of BV3. I picked my copy of BV1 for US$15. BV3 is US$75. The difference in costs can go towards a set of rules for example...

I can live with 'not so nice' counters and lesser scenarios.

Thread: Re: Out of Stock at MMP.

Its not OOS so no reprint right now. They need to build more games and it will go on sale again. My advice would be to get the RB now and thumb through it while you wait for BV to go back in stock unless you have the money to get both at once. I would get Yanks now because once gone will stay OOP for long time while they rebuild that module from scratch.

They mean they do not anticipate changing the components should it need re-printed.

You will find BV hard to find right now, as it has gone temporarily Out Of Stock. MMP has everything on hand they need to build more complete games other than a lack of time with all the new games released recently. They will hopefully get some more built and ready for sale in the next several weeks.

I've got to agree that it only refers to the changing of components.

However...
It is MMP, and they have been a bit slow with reprints over the years. Your best bet is to get a copy while they are still available.

and welcome to ASL, may you pass all your Morale Checks.

Thread: The last printing?

On MMP's site it says:

The newest, and we anticipate the last (should further reprintings be required the contents are not expected to change), printing of Beyond Valor has 10 ASL Starter Kit-style maps and 24 scenarios which use just those maps and the counters in the module.

Do they anticipate that it's probably the last printing ever? Or do they just mean the change of contents for the last time? As I understand it, Beyond Valor is one of the core modules for ASL, and it sounds strange that one of the core modules would go out of print for a game that I think is pretty popular?

Thread: Re: Out of Stock at MMP.
From my discussions with MMP people, both of the two posts above are correct. They are pleasantly surprised by the popularity of the SKs and the SKs are leading to purchases of full-blown ASL.

From the retailer point of view, I see the same thing. The SKs sell very well (all 3 are in Wargame Depot's top 15 sellers). And it is very common for customers to buy the SKs, then the ASL rules, modules, etc...

Cheers,
Jason
www.wargamedepot.com

I feel your pain. I've also decided to pick this one up, but it's nowhere to be found. I called MMP and they said expect it sometime this fall.

I suppose I'll keep checking eBay until then...

I wonder if they neglected to factor in the higher demand for the product as a result of the starter kits. Like, they sell 5000 SK#1s, maybe 30-40% of those players will move on and get the full game... or something like that (just making numbers up here). What do you guys think?

Thanks for the advice, I will try looking around some more. The e-mail I got from MMP re my order being cancelled said they should have it back in stock in the fall, so based on that (somewhat vague) estimate I wouldn't expect them to have it this month.

Of course it will take me some time yet to digest more of the rulebook, and also the rules to World in Flames that I also picked up at Origins this year. So many games, so little time....

Hopefully back in stock in the fall sometime, but now I have to wait.

Color me dissappointed

Hmmm, I did also buy a couple of battletech map packs at Origins, they have clear hexes and trees and buildings and elevation changes and so on.
What you want are the scenario set up descriptions and instructions, since you already have the counters and most maps. Not sure if you can find these floating around somewhere on the internet - I'm not net savvy enough, but maybe someone else knows the answer to that. The only alternative I can think of is to find a friendly ASLer online willing to help you out by sending you the ones you need electronically. You have invested $$$ in the game, right?

Not that buying these (especially all of them) would be any cheaper, but here's the breakdown:

The General, Vol 25, No. 3: 125
The General, Vol 26, No. 2: 127
The General, Vol 27, No. 3: 132
The General, Vol 32, No. 3: 128
ASL Annual '89: 123, 124, 129, 136
ASL Annual '90: 131, 134
ASL Annual '95: 126, 135
ASL Annual '97: 130
ASL Journal 1: 133

(Hmm. I'm missing five of those.)
I do hope the release them separately soon. I was quite happy to do the same with the For King and Country - ASL module 5a scenarios.

What does that mean exactly?

All these scenarios exist in other forms like Journals, Annuals and perhaps even Generals

I hate to say it, but outright theft is your only recourse if you want to save money.

I already have the first edition of Beyond Valor. Is there an easy way to get the extra 14 scenarios that are included in the third edition without having to buy the third edition (which would unnecessarily duplicate all the counters, etc.)?
Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

The rules in SK do an admirable job packing a lot of information in a small and relatively readable package. But if you start asking questions about edge cases, it's not long before you find a lot of questions the SK rules don't clearly answer. For a while I would just ask on the forums and always got answers. But since those answers were always citing the ASLRB itself, I eventually just bought it, even before I was quite sure that I wanted to play the full system.

Very true! The SK rules are so vague in comparison. The full asl rules, as big as they are, are so much easier to read and comprehend. Not to mention reference. I was unsure when I ordered the rules if I wanted to stick with aslsk, but after I made the leap I'm hooked. I wouldn't worry about it, just order the full rules.

Thanks for the info! I was reading Jay's post and he summed it up best...1st edition works fine unless you are competitive gaming. Most of my games would be solitaire, so if I can get the rules for 20 dollars, it may work well. I have all four of the original SL games, but they were given to me for free by a friend and all are a little musty smelling (which drives me nuts!).

I have a question,
I enjoy ATS because of the tank rules. I enjoy Band of Heroes for the "personal" aspect of the game. As usual, every game has plusses and minusses to them.
I am interested in ASL because of the flexibility not found in these other games. Neither of the other two can be set up for a DYO scenario like ASL (and SL) can be. I have never played ASL though, and I was wondering if it would be okay to buy a relatively inexpensive first edition rule book on ebay rather than donating blood to try to buy the second edition rulebook found on MMPs website.
Thanks.

For small (one or two games) orders he's hard to beat on price if you include shipping...he charges exact shipping and it's usually very low.

As of 6/25/07 he has two in stock for about $2 more than Boulder Games, but you'll end up paying a lot less after shipping.

Thank you Todd and all of you guys!

I appreciate your responses to my questions. It clarifies many of my thoughts. You all suggest me to buy BV3. It seems clear for me now to go with the family! and buy BV3.

I know that MMP Second Edition of BV contains Red Barricade but now it is out of print and sells at 200$ US on Ebay... so it is also, out of consideration! If one day, I want to get my hands on Red Barricade I'll go with the original(AH).

Another interesting point is that the Finns are in a different color in BV3. And BV3 contains counters for Chapter E. This is all good points!

Thank you guys for your help

Louis-David

As I understand it that version goes for a very pretty penny on eBay.
I'm assuming that since the OP is talking about value for the dollar that the 2nd edition is not under consideration. Even considering the inclusion of Red Barricades, the 2nd edition's collector's value is quite high. You would probably do better to buy RB and BV separately than to shell out for the 2nd edition, assuming you could even find one in good condition.

Warbear wrote:
The AH 1st edition has 12 countersheets.
The MMP 3rd edition has 13 and a half countersheets.
Good point. The extra countersheets consist of the counters for Chapter E (Night, Air Support, etc.), which are also included in Yanks. If the OP is planning on buying Yanks anyway (which is highly likely, unless he's such an East Front fanatic that he doesn't even need the Americans), then those counters aren't going to matter.

3rd Edition is still the way to go, IMO.
