Thread: Re: Rules Despute

iam reading the rules your right it does say that.but it does say in the counters pragraph about cone tradeing up or down.to big cones and so on.the eg was the green (lives)and you get green big cones in the game.i would say its a typo and it doent matter a few little house rules never hurt.besides games workshop make several typos like me per page.so i think you owe him $10.but dont pay him.because the rules say that your right.thats you opion and stick to it. but what do you think the big green coooooooooooones are for?sorry another typo.i play that you can only heal to start amount but trading experience can go higher that works perfect for me and the people i play it with.

Thread: Add Custom Cards to the Adventure Deck

The City of Adventure and Dungeon of Doom expansions come with a total of 7 cards which can be shuffled into the Adventure Deck. The purpose is to teleport you into the Realms (as they're called). However, if you don't wish to use the Realms, you can still use these cards to replace them with others.

HARPIES - mountain
DRYAD x2 - forest
TRAP DOOR x2 - dungeon
COUNTY PATROL x2 - city

For Example, you could have 7 cards from a Realm Deck shuffled, waiting until one of these Teleport cards are drawn. Here's my suggestions:
FOREST
Magic Arrow
Sword of Power
Scroll
Ghoul (2)
Jabberwock (5)
Minotaur (6)
Will-o-Wisps
DUNGEON
Spell Ring
Giant Rat (3)
Skaven (3)
Rat Ogre (4)
Giant Spider (5)
Nightmare (c6)
Crawling Slime (6)
MOUNTAIN
Dwarf Runemaster
Emerald
Medusae (5)
Potion of Flight
Scroll
Ring of Protection
Giant Rat (3)
CITY
Baker
Gold Coins
Gremlin
Money Belt (4+)
Horse Thief (only affects you now)
Fire Elemental (5)
Water Elemental (5)
TOWER
Mummy (C6)
Hydra (8)
Werewolf
Lucky Charm
Potion of Wisdom (+3)
?
?

You could copy all of these and print them out on heavy card stock to shuffle in to the adventure deck. If you are really ambitious you could create your own cards like these:
TESTED WELL:
Gold Mine - Place-6-Leave. 4 gold counters, take 1 per visit.
Archmage - Stranger-4-Leave. 4 spells, take 1 per visit.
Drought - Event-1-Leave. The space becomes desert until removed, taking 1 life. Starting next turn, this card doesn't count against the number you draw in the space.
Merchant - Stranger-4-Leave. He buys objects for 1 gold, sells objects in space for 2.
Alchemist from City - Stranger-4-Leave. (see Alchemist shop in City, except 5=craft, 6=strength).
Thread: Re: Can you play the 3rd edition without 3rd edition cards, but with 2nd ed cards and expansions?

That shouldn't be a problem, Douglas. The only space that has changed name is the Portal of Power, which is called the Causeway in the third ed. - and you will be missing the entire Inner Region.
But all (or at least almost all) cards and characters should work fine.

Thread: Can you play the 3rd edition without 3rd edition cards, but with 2nd ed cards and expansions?

I was curious if you could use the 3rd edition gameboard and the gameboard's rules ONLY to play Talisman with all the 2nd edition characters and their cards, expansions and boards?

Is this possible? In other words, the 2nd edition with the 3rd edition board as the main board.

I'm looking to replace a missing Goblin Fanatic piece in this game. Does anyone have one they would let go of or sell?

I know GW sells Goblin Fanatic pieces, but we've never been able to locate the exact mold plus the GW's you order are pewter.

I've searched on ebay many times for this. Found it just once . . . a Goblin Fanatic from Talisman 3rd, and nothing else. Just $5. I bought, paid, and then the guy "coudln't find it" and had to give my money back.

Ronaldo wrote:
Your friend is correct. Strength is used in "Battles" and battles are usually against monsters. Craft is used in "Psychic Combats" and these are usually against spirits. If you check the rules booklet you will see that it first explains "Battles" talking about strength and other details and following that it explains "Psychic Combats" saying that it is exactly like battles except that craft is used instead of strength.

I agree with MGS but what about the Assassin can his ability be used on the Dragon King (i.s. Sneak Attack)???
Thread: Talisman 3rd Edition: Reflections on the Past.

Ever since I was probably eight years old and my parents bought me my copy of Fantasy Forest (hours of fun spent dodging red dots along a set path through Gary Gygax's Candyland haha)I've been hooked to the fantasy genre of boardgames. Dungeoneer, Dark Tower I played them all in my adolescence. Then nothing really, until I was about 15 and played my first game of Talisman. I was intrigued by its accessibility, it's ease of play, variety of player characters, artwork, and it all came in a nice compact box. I won't intend to delve into the game mechanics. But rather discuss third edition's overall presentation and my impressions as such.

The components:
The addition of miniatures was a nice touch. I particularly like the minotaur and wish that all the miniatures included would have followed the same example and had the stand molded into the figure rather than having a stand that has to be affixed seperately. The plastic cones and coins included are both excellent replacements for the carboard chits of old. The board... I miss the old segmented board. And lastly while this isn't necessarily a component I thought it should be included the game box: the cardboard used in the old game box is kinda flimsy and reminds me of a monopoly box. I don't like it.

The artwork:
The artwork on the box is phenomenal. Its very eyecatching and it practically levitated the box to the cash register for me when I purchased my copy. The gameboard is also very attractive and gives nearly every space a distinct feel. And lastly the cards: I can't remember far back enough to remember if the monsters cards were identical but I know one thing... the Bear, and the Lion cards are horrible. They look very similiar to each other and neither looks as it should. That being said the other cards aren't too bad, but could stand for improvement.

Gameplay:
To reiterate what Maucoin said in his review the changes made to the initial player inventory and experience points do much to speed up game play which for me was important as game speed or lackthereof was a huge detractor. In addition, this game plays best with 3 or more people in my opinion. The friendly competition is nice and the round and round you go phenomenon is less pronounced.

Summation:
All in all a decent addition to the series. Worth the $65 dollars that I paid at the gameshop I think not. But then again it is Games Workshop we are talking about. I have high hopes for Black Industries' 4th Edition coming out in the next few months.

Also how would this work when coming out of the Dungeon (would you stop at the Ruins, or would extra movement points be carried over into the outer realm)?

How to enter another board is explained in the individual rules.

You enter the Dungeon from the Ruins space and you enter the Mountains from the Crags. You simply move in or out as you move around, but you must stop in the first space of the expansion board when you move in. You don't have to stop when you move out.

So to answer your question:
If you roll a "5" you may move into Ruins and from there into the Dungeon, where you must stop at the entrance.

To move out of the exit space via Ruins you don't have to stop at all, you simply continue on the main board.

I apologize for any confusion my first false statement may have caused!

Thread: Expansion Rules

I picked up an old and battered copy of Talisman 3rd Edition in a charity shop today. It included two of the three expansions (Dungeon, City, Mountain and Forest realms included). However, sadly amongst the few missing pieces are the rules, including those for the expansions.

So if anybody can provide me with a scanned copy of the rules (especially for the expansions) then this would be great.

Also in order to enter the expansion zones, does somebody need to land on the outer square with an exact number? Ie: If I am 1 square away from the Ruins and roll a 5, can I use the four extra points of movement in the Dungeon, or could I only enter the dungeon if I rolled a 1 and then could enter Dungeon on my next turn?
Is worth buying a couple extra and throwing them on eBay once in a while.
It's amazing how many people use eBay as the first and only place to look for bits instead of doing a little looking around...
The dragon miniatures often go 'walkabout' and get used in Warhammer armies or just get broken (when built they are prone to getting squashed when thrown back in the box), so the few I sold went for a good price...
Keep an eye out for someone selling a copy minus the dragon figure then quickly list one. If you can time it to end about 30 minutes after the game ends then chances are the same buyer will have that dragon off of you!

It might be relevant that, in the 2nd edition, you couldn't exchange XP for Lives. Perhaps the designers felt that it had become too easy to gain plenty of Lives in the 3rd Edition, hence the 'no more than 4' rule..?

Thread: Re: Rules Despute

Funny, I never noticed this inconsistency before. Must be because I just carried over from 2nd Edition.

Clearly, it's inconsistent, and both arguments are valid. You (as far as I can see), two rules: one says you can never increase your number of lives higher than the starting value. Another (XP) asys you can spend your experience points at any time for an extra life.

It would seem odd to spend 7 XP on a life that you could simply re-gain by healing. Also, it would be more appropriate to say that you can gain strength, craft, etc. by spending 7 XP, and heal for xx XP. (And additionally it's odd that there would be a 5-life counter that cannot be used.)

On the other hand, it is quite clear that your other skills (strength and craft) do not fall below their starting levels.. In addition, the emphasized specific rule should be read as the "tie-breaker" in such a conflict. (There's a legal doctrine essentially equivalent to this, but it escapes me at the moment.)

Without really delving into the game again to get a feel for the impact of either choice (really, I find it tedious, though I understand the nostalgia - but really, it's Monopoly fantasy), I would say you should follow "The Most Important Rule" (listed at the end of the manual): dice for it. 4-6 yes, 1-3 no.

The rulebook for 2nd Edition reads:

GAINING LIVES
4:4 Lives are gained as the result of Encounters or Healing (4:6). Lives gained are taken from stock.

4:5 There is no limit to the number of Lives a character may have.

Healing
4:6 Healing can never restore a character to more than 4 Lives.

Looks like this might have been a rule change between the 2nd and 3rd editions.

Last night I played the game and a rules dispute came up.

The rules state that a figure's current life value may never go above it's starting value. However one player argued this must be incorrect as each character has a starting life value of 4, yet you get large cones (representing 5) in the game. Thus according to the rules these cones are useless.
He seemed to think there was a difference in the meaning of the terminology:
"Heal" - you can go up to 4 lives and not beyond.
"Gain" - you can go above 4 lives

Is he correct?
3rd edition is slightly better, in my opinion, for three reasons:
1) you get plastic figures instead of floppy cardboard ones,
2) the expansion packs look as if they were designed with the main board in mind, rather than just random after thoughts, &
3) when playing the older 80's edition one can't help but feel a little nervous that someone might scuff the cards or lose a token whilst pondering whether one should dim the lights incase the otherwise mint and collectable game might start to show signs of fading...
Ok, so that's a slightly OTT, but if you've taken the time n funds to track down a complete set of 2nd edit. plus all the minis you can't help but get a little 'precious' over it all... I was quite impressed!

If things happen to go badly for both/all players, the game can drag. We have had 2-player games drag past 2.5 hours and not get finished. To be fair, though, we were probably goofing off a lot and not very serious about the game.

I hadn't played Talisman 3ed in a while and I was surprised to see people saying that Talisman takes a long time to play. Usually this refers to the 2ed but people end up letting this impression spill to 3ed too.

I have the 3 expansions. 2 actually tend to speed up the game and only the Tower makes for a longer game. I used to play with 2-6 players and finish in reasonable time if not using the Tower.

The 2 of us played Talisman tonight. We used the vanilla version b/c we hadn't played for a few years. The game took about 1 hour and was great fun. We plan to use 2 of the expansions next time so I will update this.

Do any of the 3ed players think this game takes a very long time to finish?

The only item that says anything about physic combat is the skull wand I believe. And it says it adds +1 to battle, and +2 to physic combat. And I do agree, it is weird to have a sword adding to physic combat, but again, if those items don't, then craft really isn't that useful. Cause you can always have a bigger bonus in strength based, as they are far more things that add to it. Guess it doesn't really matter, we can play either way our selves, I was jsut wondering, but thanks for the reply.

Thread: Battle and Physic Combat

A couple of nights ago me and my friends were playing, and we started playing under the assumption that items like the battle axe and broad sword would not add to your score in psychic combat, as they said battle on them, and it didn't make a lot of sense for them to. But as we played more(this was the first time we played this edition) we realized that seemed unbalanced. As there was only one item in the whole game which made any mention of adding to psychic combat, but is also made mention of normal battle too.

And on top of that, no spells would actualy affect the out come of psychic combat,as they all add to battle, so we played so that anythign addign to battle was to both, as it seemed like the right way to do it.

Then the other night, my other friend was arguing that it didn't work that way, battle and psychic combat were different he said. And I pointed out the Goblin Fanatic. The exact wording on him is, "Your ball and chain allows you to roll two dice in battle(not psychic combat)." If batlle was a term only used for strength based combat, then why would they specificly make mention of psychic combat here when the term battle is used? So my feeling is that battle is just a genric term for all combat, and then you have normal combat, and psychic combat. I was wondering what others thought.
