Wow - thanks for the info. I knew I had seen this generals face somewhere. I agree, there probably was some confusion with his picture and Beauregard. Close but no seegar!
Thanks for clearing this up for us.

That would be Joseph Reid Anderson, who ran Tredegar Iron Works. He bears a slight resemblance to PGT Beauregard--who the graphic designer probably meant to use. That, or the designer shares my keen interest in Civil War industrialization and logistics:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_R._Anderson

Thread: CONFEDERATE GENERAL I.D.

Does anyone know who the Confederate General is on the left side of the board, above the picture of Jeb Stuart? The guys in our gaming group (all Civil War buffs) could not agree. We thought it might be Cheatam, or A.S. Johnston but no published photo matched. I searched the internet but couldn't find any pictures that matched the one on the board. Anybody know who this is?

Thread: Re: Online Battle Cry to be developed by Game Table Online

Thanks for the update Jay.

Funny you should mention the game not hooking you at first. I picked up a copy ~2001 and it sat collecting dust for years. After playing it I couldn't wait for the next game. Borg's Commands and Colors system is really, really good.

It would be mind-numbingly cool if GTO developed online versions of of C&C systems. It would be great to be able to play Memoir with all the expansions without the $300 price tag.

Just in case you missed the new in the computer boardgaming forum, or if you missed the new link near the top of the page, I wanted to mention that Online Battle Cry is now up and available for play at GameTable Online.

On a personal note I wanted to point out that while I had played a couple of games of Battle Cry when the board game was initially released, it didn't really hook me. Now that I've played dozens of games online it's one of my favorite games. I also recently picked up BattleLore and am currently eying C&C:A.

Even though the game is still in beta (and a couple of bugs have turned up this week) it's a very solid game and amazingly fun to play in this online format.

Enjoy!

Or, you could deal yourself 3 cards for the first side; choose 1, and implement that action; then discard the remaining 2 cards.

Deal yourself 3 more cards for the second side; choose 1, and implement that action; then discard the remaining 2 cards.

Continue to alternate dealing yourself 3 cards for each side and implementing 1 card's action.

True, this method does not permit "long term" planning, such as, I'm going to move an infantry unit on the right flank this turn, then move another infantry unit on the left flank next turn, with the goal of attacking the enemy's General and infantry unit in the center.

But, too many times planned strategy has to change immediately because the enemy has done something expected. Just as in real battles, sometimes units failed to receive orders. or to execute them "according to the plan."

Thread: Random Set Up

If you fancy a total random battle to play try this !

Either set up a battle feild from a scenario or just set up a random battle feild as you wish.

Now decided how many units per side you are going to play with
(10-15 units per side is good)

Now pick a side "union" or "confederate" and roll one battle dice;
"infantry symbol" get one infantry unit
"cavalry symbol" get one cavalry unit
"artillery symbol" get one artillery unit
"crossed sabres symbol" get one general
"flag symbol" no unit this time

If no more of that unit type are avalible the you get to choose any unit you wish.

Now you can place this unit on any hex on one of the battle fields base lines, and repeat for the other side.

Keep doing this up to the number of units you chose to play with.
Don't forget a "flag symbol" is a no unit but still counts as a roll for that side.

"Not all battles had the same number of units on the field"

Command Cards
if both side have the same number of generals the both sides get 5 command cards.

If one side has more generals then it get 5 command cards and the other side get 4 command cards.

Have Fun All-Amos
Thread: Solo Battle Cry

I had a day where i was not able to get an opponent to play Battle Cry with and really fancied a game so i sat down with the game and try to figure out how to play solo.

The main problem was the hidden card system(hard in a solo game).

Right here goes.........!

First set up a standard scenario to play, but sit between both side to one edge ,which just makes it easier to play this way.

Now the command card bit is ,like i said a main part of the game.
You have not to know what command cards the enemy side has.

If both sides have the same number of command cards at the start of the game, just deal "1" card face up to each side.

If one side has 4 cards and the other has 5 cards then the 4 gets "1" card face up and the 5 get "2" cards face up.
Know you know what possable moves each side has.

At the start of a sides turn deal "1" card face up from the deck to it's other command cards.
Now from the cards face up for that side pick a command card and play as normal, but don't pick a new command card at the end of the turn.

If you don't have any cards that you can use ,you just discard one card and miss that sides turn (as normal in the game)

Now the other side takes it's turn as stated above and continue play.

Try it for a game and let me know how it goes.

Have Fun All-Amos

Thread: Re: Infantry rule variant: question

The original rule was move 1. Then you may fire or not. many adopted the houserule that you could then move 2 spaces with no dice or 1 and battle. call it semi-official be4cause I think the designer embraced the idea but it was never officially changed by Hasbro.

The rule was carried over into Memoir 44 as this is how the infantry are treated in that game. Battle Cry is suppsed to be reissued by FRED int eh next couple of years. The assumption is this Infantry rule change will be incorporated in that version, among some other things adopted in Memoir.

Thread: Infantry rule variant: question

When I was originally taught this game - many years ago - I was told that the rules for Infantry had been changed from the printed manual. Instead of move one (optional fire), I was taught that you could move 2 (no fire), or move 1 (optional fire).

All these years later, I was looking through some of the files and threads on here and I can't find place that says ANYTHING about this optional infantry rule. Do any of you know about this? Was it an official change? Was it ever generally adopted by the BC community? Do any of you play with this rule change?

Thread: Re: Why am I so terrible at this game?

If you are interested in testing your tactical acument this may simply not be the right game for you. Between the cards and the dice, the game is highly random.

Certianly, you can mitigate chance by managing your cards, as outlined above. However, if you place emphasis on winning, you should definitely switch sides in scenarios and play a whole series of games against the same opponent. Once you average the plays, luck should even out.

Thread: Re: Why am I so terrible at this game?

I own Battle Cry and I agree it is a fun game but have you considered you may just be having a run of bad luck?

I had a friend over last night and we played 3 games of Memoir 44 which is practically the same game [just a few differences]. He had yet to beat me until last night and then I got a sound trouncing.

I could not draw useful cards, I kid you not each game we played I got stuck with numerous recon 1 cards {which is move one unit}. I rareley drew useful cards and when I did it was too little too late as he had already decimated my armies, so drawing a move all on left flank after they had practically been wiped out, doesn't do me a whole lot of good.

Let me give you an example. He played an air support card that lets him roll 2 dice on 4 adjacent targets. This was the first card played on his side. He rolled and missed on my infantry but got 2 hits on one unit of 3 tanks, 2 hits on the next 3 tanks and 1 hit on the last tank.
5 tanks gone with one card.

I played a counter attack which lets me do the same to him. I rolled and hit one infantry, missed his tanks, missed his artillary and missed his tanks. Same rolls, 1 infantry yet he practically wiped out 2 battallion of tanks. To make matters worse, I was the germans so technically I was only supposed to roll 1 die per hex but the rolls were so abysmal it made no difference.

Again, same game I move 3 battalion of tanks to take a hill, atacking up a hill units roll 1 less die. The hope was to take it with at least one tank and gain ground with the tank in order to make another attack. 6 dice, 1 hit.

He attacks back and hits again 5 out of my 9 tanks, the guy just never missed what he was aiming at, uncanny. I have an activate 1 in the center, I activate one tank and take out 1 more measily infantry. I now draw the activate 4 tanks, a good card. His turn he destroys two of the lone tank batallions and another on the one with two tanks left. So much for the activate 4 tanks. Had I drew it a turn earlier it could have made a difference, had his dice rolling not been so frustratingly accurate I might have had a chance.

The games this night all came down to luck of cards and dice, It was all I could do to not throw the dice across the room I was so angry and frustrated.

My first 2 games I could not draw cards to save my life nor roll dice, my last game I was actually getting good cards but I couldn't hit the broadside of the barn. It's the first time this has happened to me this bad, I have had bad die rolls before but they usually turn around sometime during the game, not this time.

So, consider it may just have been a run of bad luck.

Hey all
Just my humble opinion but 99% of the battles fought in history are not "fair".One side always usually has a slight or clear advantage. Its the strategy and execution that usually wins the day.
That what makes specific scenerio wargaming great!,the chance to overcome some specific battles in history, and what odds some commanders faced.
But i can also understand the complete strategist who wishes both side to be equal footing for the sake of competetive fun...
again just my 2 cents...and worth just that.
happy gaming
Joe
PS also love the games that have the feel of the time period. c&c at least does that even if its just light wargaming fun.

I'd also like to add that just about any wargame would kill to be ranked 116. Just my two cents.

I think any game would kill to be ranked 116. Well except maybe for the 115 ahead of it.

I made no claim that its ranking was poor - just lower than its spinoffs. Am I in the minority in thinking that Ancients is SO much more interesting to play due to the diversity in units, battle back, evade, leaders effects, etc?

"Ratings and Rankings" is one of those hot-button topics on the geek. Its amazing how hot and bothered people become when you merely mention a game rating in relation to another game.

I don't think you're alone there RE: so much more interesting. CC:A is strongly and loudly championed on the Geek.

Not everone feels that more unit options makes a game more interesting or compelling.

Players particular fondness for one of the CC games over the others often boils down to fondness for theatre. CW fans usually preffer BC to the other three systems. Grognards tend to poo-poo BattleLore.

At the end of the day all four games are really good additions to almost any game collection.

At the rate the Geek is growing and the rate at which really good, well marketted games are being released many of these games may slip from the top 25, top 100 or even top 500 eventually. They'll still be good games.

Thread: Re: Reprint on the way

Instead of quoting all the above by Chris and Barry, I want to just echo my feelings on having lines of troops. I am currently working on, as part of my Napoleonic/Civil War/Age of Muskets type rework, making stands using Risk armies. I picked up three sets of the 1993 version of Risk off of Ebay and I also ordered some stands from Litko. I ordered 10mmx25mm for infantry, which will allow me to have two ranks in front, two in back with three guys on each stand. I also ordered 3/4 inch square ones for artillery and cavalry. The cavalry gets two per stand and will fit with two in front, one in back. The artillery is one per stand with an extra guy acting as a cannoneer.

All told, I think I spent 60 bucks on the whole thing not including other work I am doing on them (painting and washing each figure to give them a little better appearance). Anyways, three risk sets will give you enough for 10 infantry, and plenty of cavalry and artillery. The extra cannoneers are another color's pieces painted to match the color of the country being used. Generals are merely a single horse placed on a 10mmx25mm stand with gold base.

I did four of the six colors (gray, blue, red, and green) to support a lot of different time periods like American civil war, American revolution, Mexican American War, War of 1812, 30 Years War and Nappys.

The other two colors are being painted into the other colors to provide extra infantry units and cannoneers.

Oh, and to add to it, I am making custom terrain for them using 2inch DalTile ceramic tile hexes. Yeah, I'm certifiably nuts.

It's good to see this information out in the open at last.

I understand that there is not a great deal changing in the new edition insofar as basic system is concerned. I'd expect some new cards and most certainly more scenarios and scenario support (Richard had a number of scenarios for the standard game, as well as "Big Battle Cry" double-board multiplayers scenarios which he runs at conventions such as "Historicon" ready to go but was prevented from publishing them under the previous contract).

I would love to see the addition of naval fire support for scenarios such as Shiloh, the assault on Battery Wagner, and the attack on Fort Fisher) and representation of dismounted cavalry. I hope "Forced March" remains but has its name changed to "Double-quick" as the latter is a more accurate term for the game effect at the battle level.

I wouldn't mind seeing some evolution of "All-out Attack" but I believe it should have a cost associated with its use (such as my own "house rule" which permanently reduces the hand of any Player using the All-Out) and perhaps a requirement that it be either played or discarded on the Turn it is drawn.

In terms of physical presentation, I'd love to see this line of games given a new concept in miniatures as markers: instead of one huge infantryman (three of which, plus a color bearer, compose a fresh unit), picture a 3-D piece with a small "rank" of, say, four or five soldiers on one stand, four stands (one with a flag) to a unit, giving tghe effect of a miniature "battle line." A friend of mine converted his BC to this approach using 6mm figures, 20 or 24 to a unit, and two guns with crews per base in Artillery units, along with multi-trooper cavalry stands. The effect is absolutely stunning; it looks like an aerial view of an actual battle (especially with raised hills and roofing nail-and-clump foliage-trees).

Some new terrain types would also be welcome, as would revised scenarios (there are no movement-blocking rock piles due south of The Copse of Trees at Gettysburg to "channel" Pickett's Charge).

I agree with the comment above regarding "Reinforcements" not being limited by the "total units available" piece-mix cap. I'd also like to see "Rally" more frequently in the game and also would like to see infantry fire reduced to 3/2/1 a la Memoir '44--so that a fresh unit cannot be eliminated by a single infantry unit's fire in one turn.

I've loved this system since the very first incarnation of "Commands & Colors" (rules, blank dice, stickers and a card deck!) and look forward to discovering what Richard does to rejuvenate the Granddaddy of the whole C&C line. Releasing it in connection with the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War is a sound marketing idea (just imagine how well an American Revolution version would have done had it been timed to appear when Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" was big).

Congratulations Richard Borg! Now how about that Seven Years' War, Napoleonic, Mexican-American War and Thirty Years' War version??? : )

You spoke the truth, though maybe mis-amplified. Battle Cry is an older, less distributed, OOP game that wasn't properly supported by the publisher and was less polished than it's successors.

That's the simple truth of the matter. Everytime an expansion is produced for one of these games, it gets more attention and picks up more players and usually causes people to rank the base game higher. I know my rating of BL went up after some of the "core" expansions came out. Or when people discover one game (with the possible exception of Ancients which draws from a whole different crowd), they want to explore the other titles. It's hard to purchase BC when it's OOP and overpriced on eBay.

Ironically though, I have my highest win percentage in BC over allthe other C&C games!

Also, my current opinion of the games has them further apart than BGG users as I strongly prefer Ancients game play despite prefering the ACW setting over the Ancients setting.

I guess that because its ACW I'm looking for a reason to purchase but I just won't be able to justify buying back the same game that I recently sold two copies of unless it has shown growth.

One thing I like a lot about this version of the C&C system is that it feels a lot like the Civil War to me. In many cases, its about surviving a charge across open terrain. If you survive intact, you can often force retreats of enemies off the back of the board - making your chances to win so much better.

Be patient, when you get bored and start leaving guys out to dry is when you start losing units quickly.

Also, not all the scenarios are "fair". I think its best to play both sides and go with total score to determine the winner of a scenario.

Fair enough and that is probably our difference. I don't expect to find realism in any of this line of games. I play them when I want a light but interesting game with a war theme.

I don't expect too much realism either, but I played two ancients sessions that looked nothing like the battles of Cannae and Zama while I've played some sessions of Battle Cry and Memoir '44 that made perfect sense. I just don't like how the system feels when applied to melee warfare, but maybe I just had a few bad experiences.

Thread: Re: Why am I so terrible at this game?

Here's some ideas to consider:

1) There's a tendency to play big cards (e.g., move three units) at first so that you can start moving lots of units into the battle. What I would do is to look at your starting hand and see if there are cards that aren't as strong (e.g., move only 1 unit), then use those cards first before the shooting starts. For example, use those weak cards to bring up some units from the rear. Often, there are units that never see any action because the action is hot and heavy elsewhere, and these units never get activated.

2) Before committing to an assault, make sure that you have a couple of cards in that sector in your hand so that you can follow up an attack. In general, you should have a plan for the current turn and the next taking account of how your opponent can react in the mean time.

3) Make sure you go after units that are down to only a man or two (you only get points for units you completely eliminate), but don't overextend yourself pursuing them. It's too easy for a lone unit way out in front alone to be wiped out in a coordinated volley.

4) Similarly, if you have units that are down to a man or two, try to pull them back out of harms way or at least into cover. You might be able to tempt your opponent to pursue and over extend himself. And you might save a victory point.

5) Declare your attacks in the right order. Let's say that you have an attack with three units. What if the first attack causes the enemy to retreat a hex? Will that cause a unit to move out of range or into cover? Perhaps doing the attacks in a different order will help.

Thread: Why am I so terrible at this game?

I just started playing this game last week and I have been beaten soundly in the first four matches we have played. I played as the Union twice on the Battle of Bull Run scenario and the Rebels the third time. All three times I was beaten by another newbie rather soundly. Today I was handed a butt kicking on Pea Ridge as the Confederates. I tried looking for some general strategy on the subject but there is really nothing posted. Just wondering if anyone had some general overviews as to strategy that I am not doing. Thanks.

Thread: Re: Reprint on the way

Ancients - BGG Rank 13
Battlelore - BGG Rank 23
Memoir - BGG Rank 37

Battle Cry - BGG Rank 116

Battle Cry ranks well below its spinoffs. I'm hoping that the update is fairly significant since BC lacked many of the card, options and nuances of later games in the series that made them significantly better. This despite BC having very good production values.

Soon after its release you could find player sites online where they were adding in options that have found their way into later games in the series. I'm not claiming that the designer had not already thought of them, perhaps he or the publishing company chose to leave them out. In any case the game has not held up as well as others in the series as a result. I finally sold both my copies as they were not good enough to make the table any longer while the others were present.

If the changes breath new life into it, this will be a must purchase for me.

Thread: Re: Reprint on the way

I saw the post over on some C&C:Ancient threads.

FRED means Eagle. Eagle has stated for a while that they were working with RBorg on a Civil War game but they had been denying it was the Battle Cry remake.

RBorg told me that it would probably be out in 2010 in anticipation of the 150th anniversary of the ACW.

Hopefully 3 changes occur (unless they were really meant to be designed in to the era):

1) Infantry can move 2 and not fire like Memoir. The game took too long to develop (which became painfully obvious in PBeM)

2) Tactic Cards give the option to order any unit if you don't have that unit available

3) If a unit is pushed off the edge it doesn't wipe out the whole unit and only takes a figure a flag that can't be retreated.

The all out offensive didn't bother me too much but I can see this bein linked to "Command" instead of all units. The other card that bothered me was the one where you could Reinforce but was limited to the actual playing pieces in the box. Which meant that if the game came with 10 INF units and all 10 were listed in the scenario, you could NEVER reinforce with Infantry, even if some had been destroyed.

What I am looking forward to the most is new scenarios, more diverse terrain, and the official support that every title but the orginal BC received from their publishers.

Excellent. Last year, Richard alluded to a reprint of Battle Cry coming out, but I thought he said that it might be 2010. Glad to see that it's coming out. I'd love to see the new rulebook.
