Thread: Session Report

Gamewright game by David Parlett. Pick up a blind card from a 7 by 7 grid of cards made up of 7 animals rated 1 thru 7. Replace it face up with something from your hand, but only if the animal you place down is not in that row or column. Zirkus Flohcati scoring, except if you have more than 1 of an animal, they score negative. A rating of 5 after 2 games; average luck-based stuff, but kind of mindless 15 minute fun.

Thread: General Comment

I bought this new David Parlett card game sight unseen, and I was extremely disappointed with my initial playing of the game. The mechanism seemed potentially interesting: players take turns drawing from a grid of face down animal cards (eight animal types with card numbered 1-7), and then playing a card back to the empty slot that was created -- the catch is that you can't place an animal into a row or column that already contains that animal. In the process, you're trying to assemble in your hand a diverse set of cards because while the first card of a given animal type gives you positive points, all additional cards in your hand of the same type score negative.

Unfortunately, there simply aren't many interesting decisions to be made here. What little strategy there is to the game is fairly obvious. This game might be entertaining to families with young kids, because the kids might enjoy trying to figure out where are legal spaces for them to get rid of the cards they don't want. But I personally found the game to be very disappointing.
