Thread: 3 player game

Slow day at work so we dealt out a three-player hand of Bleeding Sherwood. After a few false starts, coming back to the rules a couple of times, we finally managed to get a pretty cutthroat game going.

Dave Howell's analogy that Bleeding Sherwood is like "bidding on gumballs with $100 bills" actually made the strategy a little clearer. In the early hands, we were way overbidding, but later on we figured out how to hang back - but not for two long. Since the game ends as soon as somebody hits 100 Golde, you can let a couple of bids go, but when somebody gets close, you have to bite the bullet and put down a bid. Towards the end of the game when everybody is only holding about 2 cards in their hand and the individual peasant decks are exhausted, therefore adding Goode cards from the deck makes the last couple of hands pretty tense. It actually felt a little like Texas Hold 'Em because you desperately wondered what they had left in their hand that was worth betting with.

In a three-player game, it's easy for the first two people to pass, but then you worry about whether the third player will go along or if they will snap up the Mark for a cheap bid.

I'd say it was pretty good, but I'm now anxious to see how a larger game would play out. In such a situation, you couldn't be as light and breezy about letting Marks go all the way around the table without a bid.

Thread: Available Free/`Orderware'

Cheapass Games will let you download the game for free. In an unusual experiment, they ask that you make a $10 order if you like it.

http://www.cheapass.com/free/games/bleedingsherwood.html

The ratings aren't that great, but apparently it is more interesting if you don't succumb to the obvious (and bad) strategy. The cards may also provide entertainment.

Michael
