I used to play this as a kid with my brother and cousins. I was always the youngest, so I always got punk'd.

But I never remember any of my games going like this

Thread: Burning the Midnight Oil

Our group had gathered to partake in some drunken festivities one dark night, when I suddenly found the copy of Nightmare I had left at my friends house the last (and first...and only, for that matter) time it was played.

Upon it's discovery, groans could be heard throughout as we recalled our "fond" memories of playing this moldy oldy just a week ago.

But, inspite of the almost physical pain it caused us to play, we decided to give it another try. Jordan (I think it was Jordan anyway...alcohol affects memory? pfff) decided that the tape just didn't motivate us enough by simply being placed in the VCR. So, being the creative/responsible/considerate fellow he is, he broke off the head and started to pull the tape out.

Now, for those who don't know, tape is a SURPRISINGLY strong material that is damn hard to rip. Naturally, to appease the Gatekeeper, we needed a sacrfice. I don't remember volunteering, but in my lust for Nightmare, I must have; my legs and arms were quickly bound by the tape, and I was carried outside along with the rest of the components (hey, you need more then the tape to play this classic!).

Under the stars, Nightmare was truly allowed to shine...by being placed in a grill. and set on fire.

Let me tell you what...if you are ever, ever stranded in the middle of nowhere, and you have to depend on a fire for your very survival, and, on top of that, you happen to have a boardgame with you (preferably Nightmare, but anything with cards would probably do), use the cards as kindly; that crap burns FAST.

The board was, I have to say, very disappointing. Granted, it did have a nice "bubbling affect" as it began to burst into flames, but after the show the cards had put on for us, it wasn't nearly as impressive.

Plastic smells soooo bad burning. nuff said.

I managed to convince my friend Bill to retrieve the bag the tape came in for me (hey, hard to find good bags) and he was kind enough to shove it down my pants for safe storage.

At some point Jordan sprayed cheese wizz all over my body/the tape remains, but I'm not really sure if that had to do with us playing the game, or if I was just an easy target. Maybe I just looked like a giant Wheat Thin. Or he was drunk. Maybe all of the above.

All in all, this session was WAY more satisfying then the last time we had played, and the end-game pickup was surprisingly quick.

Thread: Nightmare: A Quick Session

This is my 2nd session report ever and I apologize in advance for any typos. I write this from the memory of a session played almost eight years ago (but those are the best kind anyway).

The Players: WhiteWolf (Me)
Age: 18 (at the time)
Atmosfear rank: Novice

Grim (My brother)
Age: 21
Atmosfear rank: Novice

Lex Lucor (My friend)
Age: 18
Atmosfear rank: Newbie

AngelEyes (My mother)
Age: 42
Atmosfear rank: Novice

Ulrich (My friend)
Age: 18
Atmosfear rank: Newbie

The Setting:
It's nearing midnight at my residence and all the lights have been turned off. I've called Lex and Ulrich over to my place to play a game we'd recently purchased: Nightmare! Grim, Angel, and I have all played it once and we're eager to play again. The TV is on and the tape is running. The board is set, a few candles are lit, and snack bowls are abundant. Tonights selection features pretzels, M&M's, Mini-Candybars, and a nearly unlimited supply of Pepsi and Mountain Dew. The mood is right...time to play!

The Rules:
Well, it's Nightmare. It's a bit hard to have house rules in this game so we went by the book, not even an occasional pausing of the tape to get more snacks!

Notes:
For those that don't know the game, you pop a tape in the VCR and the Gatekeeper (or Emperor) tells you what, and what not, to do. The object is to collect 6 keystones and 'face your fear' before the tape runs out (60 minutes) or you die and the Emperor wins. The "Black Hole" is punishment for not obeying the Emperor or failing the tasks he sets you to do. You can do NOTHING in the Black Hole but wait until you're bailed out by another player, a card, or the Emperor himself when he's in a good mood (which is like, once during the entire game).

How it Played Out:

Anyone who has played Nightmare a few times knows of those few special moments that really stick out. The naming of the "Old One" (Angel, in this case) and having the Emperor ask if she's dead yet (an emphatic "No!" out of Angel, followed by a "Pity..." by the Emperor).

Admittedly, it's hard to remember much of the game other than those few standout moments. But I do recall being banished...banished to the BLACK HOLE! In fact... I spent more time in the Black Hole that night than any other time we've played Atmosfear. I recall actually doing well for a bit and suddenly...BOOM! The Emperor appears on the TV screen. "You! The player whose turn it is now!" At this point I'm thinking "Oh no". "You're banished to the Black Hole!" the Emperor speaks with a hellish look of glee shining in those nasty yellow eyes. "Curse you Emperor!" I stand up ready to rip the tape out of the VCR and toss it across the room, but Angel warns that I'll be grounded for a week if I break a $50 board game. Point taken, the Emperor is safe...for now.

"Young one!" The Emperor screams with glee... "No not me!" Lex exclaims, being the Young One in this game. "Yes YOU!" the all-knowing Emperor cackles from the TV screen. A look of sheer horror passes over Lex's face. The Emperor knows what he's thinking! He also has a gift for Lex...a trip to the Black Hole!

One of the highlights of any game of Nightmare is the infamous "Staredown" with the Emperor. Basically the Emperor calls upon the current player to stop whatever he or she is doing and have a staring contest with him. This is nearly impossible to win, and if you fail you are banished to the Black Hole for being so weak. I recall Ulrich, about 1 minute and 30 seconds into the Staredown screaming "AAUUURGH MY EYES ARE BLEEDING! GOD HELP ME MAKE HIM (the Emperor) GO AWAY! AUUUUUGHHHHH" It was a true miracle that Ulrich outlasted the Emperor and won the Staredown!

Game Over:

Well, I remember I didn't win, but we did end up beating the Emperor with a mere 8 SECONDS to spare! Who won? Honestly I don't remember. It really doesn't matter who wins in this game, it's all about the experience you have while playing it. We'll pretend Grim won since he was victorious in my last session report (The 1000 Life Magic Game). By the time it was all over we were all laughing and in good spirits, even if it was 1AM in the morning. The game has very little replay value once you've played it several times, but those first few times of playing it are sure to bring about some very memorable moments.

Thread: Re: User Review

ah the game that started it all,
atmosfear is basically a revamped version of the Nightmare.

the basic game I think Nightmare is actually funner and better.

I own both and I think Nightmare is the true gem.
there are loads of cards in this game unlike atmosfear,
certain cards we just toss out to make playing simpler.

this one reminded me even more of monopoly without the
money.

Thread: User Review

We loved this game so much as kids. It's basically a roll and move type game but there's a lot of interaction with other players and with the television that It made the game really fun.

You have a choice of six characters to play, there's gevadun the werewolf, Baron samedi the zombie, ann de chantraine the witch, hellin the poltergeist, elizabeth bathory the vampire, and khufu the mummy. All the characters are basically the same so which character you pick doesn't really affect the game too much. Nightmare also comes with a vhs tape that you watch while playing the game. The gatekeeper talks to you, keeps track of time and messes with the players.

Before you start the game each player writes his greatest fear on one of the cards and they are shuffled and put on the center of the board. The point of the game is to be the first one to collect all of your keys and make it to the center of the board, where you take one of the nightmare cards and hope its not your own fear.

Another thing that adds to the fun of this game are the cards you collect as you go around the board. There are time cards that you need to track of because at certain times you can use them to steal keys from other players or various other things. For example it might say at 19:07 scream as loud as you can and whoever you scare has to return a key or something similar.

Overall I think this game was alot better with younger players but older players might like it once in a while as mindless entertainment. It's a perfect halloween game which is the only time we usually play it anymore and it has some interesting concepts.
