SO I just got this game sealed and everythong opened it up, the game had all the monies in there, all the pokemon collector movers, all the deed cards, but no trainer/battle cards... does anybody have an idea where i can get a print out or list of the cards and what they say... that way I can just make my own, I've tried contacting hasbro and they dont make the game any more i.e. no replacement cards available. (although they are sending me something of equal value? (what ever)

Thread: In which I fail to keep my big mouth shut

I look at the top of a bookshelf I rarely look at the top of, and see a stack of boxes. A Lite Brite, two Furby games, the Tamagotchi game and...

Pokemon Monopoly?

"We have Pokemon Monopoly?" I say.

"Oh yeah!" says C---. "You want to play?"

I just laugh.

"I see," she says. "You're just to embarassed to log it on the 'geek. I understand."

"You're on! Not only are we going to play it, not only am I going to log it -- I'll even write about it!" I say, and go to tell J--- we're playing Monopoly in a few minutes. (It's just about now that I realize I just may have been manipulated through the subtle science of psychology. No way to back out now, though.) I set up the card table and start digging out the bits and the money and the board and all the cards and stuff.

I insist we play by the rules, so I go over the things that don't work like people think they do -- Free Parking, mainly, but also lot auctions and exactly what being in jail means and how you get out. We also agree on a time limit: an hour and a half. C--- doesn't think this is long enough.

We start. There are a lot of doubles right away, and there's a special rule in Pokemon Monopoly that you can use a Pokemon power instead of rolling again. Double twos is "Rest like Clefairy and receive $200". A lot of double twos are rolled throughout the whole game, almost always by people other than me. People whose names start with C.

(An aside: actually, the Pokemon re-theme for this game is done quite well. The color groups are different gyms, the lots are different Pokemon to capture... er, buy... and even the replacements for the Electric Company, Waterworks and the Railroads are appropriate. Houses and hotels become Poke Centers and Poke-Marts, and Chance and Community Chest become Professor Oak and Trainer Battle. It is mystifying, however, to see that some of the pawns are Pokemon in their evolved forms and others are not. The fact I totally understood everything I just wrote and how it relates to the video games and anime is a little bit embarrassing, but only a little bit.)

We're buying lots more quickly than in most games of Monopoly I've suffered through. An early deal gives J--- the first complete color group and me two out of three. We quickly find that Professor Oak is kind of a bastard; his cards are quite perilous, and the Pokemon double power that allows you to visit him is unpopular. J--- manages to complete the yellow color group and has a surprising amount of money, which he uses to plunk down a few Poke Centers. He then starts collecting quite a bit of rent from this and his other undeveloped color group, and pretty soon has a set of Poke-Marts. Looking back, this is where the trouble began. I still only have one complete color group (Orange, some plant Pokemon, but undeveloped), and C--- has two, the blues (Misty's water Pokemon) fairly well built-up, and one Poke Center on Nidoking (Boardwalk).

We notice that we've reached our time limit, and C--- asks if we can keep playing. Neither J--- nor I have a problem with this, so we do. C--- then promptly lands on J--'s Poke-Marted Wheezing, and can't scratch up enough money to pay the rent. All her money and property go to J--, and poor me, who still doesn't own a Poke Center, can see the inevitable looming ahead.

Still, I manage to pick up the cheap purples (Geodude and Onyx) for all the good it does me. I avoid J---'s properties for a while, by lucky high rolling and then by double ones ("Teleport like Mewtwo to any space") but then it happens. I land on the Poke-Marted Staryu. I manage to pay off the rent by mortgaging everything, but I only have a handful of fives and one left. The game limps on 'til I land on his Poke-Marted Voltorb, and the game is over. My crushing defeat in just under an hour and three quarters.

I realize I actually had fun. Monopoly isn't such a bad game, really, especially when it moves along quickly enough. Too many players and too many house rules really spoil things, as can contentious players (say, a family at holiday time). I'm definitely not going to give up other gaming for a steady diet of Monopoly but I really won't mind playing once in a while. A moderately long while.

The game is carefully boxed up and put up on a shelf, where it will probably sit until someone else sees it by chance and can't keep quiet. Me, I now know better. And that copy of Pokemon Sorry! right there under it? I'm not saying a word.

Do you hear me? Not a word.

1500 units of currency. However, this may vary depending on edition, with all the prices altered to match the new value. On the 'Go' square, it should say 'x' for passing 'Go'. In normal Monopoly x=200. If your figure on the 'Go' square is, say, 100, then the starting money will be 750. If your figure is 2000 then the starting figure will be 15,000:

Hope this helps.

the rules are the same as normal Monopoly, though the labels on the spaces may be different: this is true of 99% of Monopoly editions.

If you don't have/know normal Monopoly rules we could help you out with those.
