Thread: Re: Any Two Remedy Cards are Wild

Does this escalate the problem? Or at least put pressure on a different area?

You are disapppointed at not getting a particular remedy card matched to a particular hazard. Then you eliminate cards matched to a different hazard, thus reducing chances of correcting against that other hazard.

Does that matter?

Thread: Re: Any Two Remedy Cards are Wild

Most games that have the discard multiple for a wild mechanic seem to require more cards to do it. I personally think that any 2 cards is a bit easy. Maybe any 3 or 2 of a kind would work better.

But I do like your thinking of bringing this element into this game.

Thread: Simple but fun nonetheless

I am off work after having some major back surgery so I am pretty much stuck at home for 6-12 weeks. Needless to say I am going a bit buggy, but BGG and my games keep me from going over the edge completely. The medications leave me a bit dull some days so I was looking for something to play that didn't need tons of focus but still offered some challenge and fun. I had my son pick up mille bornes and what do you know it fit the bill nicely. There is enough of the take that factor to keep my boys interested and there is enough of a goal to satisfy my wife's need to see her victory in all it's glory. I played it often when younger and now as an adult I can appreciate it as something along the line of backgammon with out the use of the doubling cube. Simple, but challenging enough and uncertain enough to keep it interesting. Plus the wife and kids LOVE to hamstring me at every opportunity. Funny how some people show their love

Thread: Re: When is delayed action scored?

Being literal just for amusement: I have both older and newer copies of the rules in front of me. The wording between them has a minor alteration, but does not speak in terms of the deck being exhuasted.

(older) Delayed Action (Bonus points for completing a trip after all cards have been played from the draw pile).

(newer) Additional bonus if trip is completed after all cards have been played from the draw pile (Delayed Action).

That's after all the cards have been played. If one drawn card is still in your hand, then you could say it hasn't been played (unless you make a real stretch, and your hand still consists only of cards originally dealt. But then how are you going to complete the trip if all your cards have been played already ?

Short Answer: Mr. Literal is wrong. You and your friends are right.

The draw deck is not exhausted at the moment the last card is drawn, rather this condition is met when the drawing player's turn comes to an end.

Thread: When is delayed action scored?

I received a call from some friends about a rule debate over when delayed action is scored. The rules simply state it's scored after the draw deck is exhausted. The ambiguity arrived and was debated amongst this group as one person drew the last card and went out.

The person who went out wanted the delayed action points for the literal interpretation of the rule, while the others believed that delayed action points mean you go out when you're unable to draw a card from the discard pile.

Which way do people play out there? Logically, the bonus points should be awarded for going out and not having the advantage of drawing a card. The person who goes out after drawing the last card really didn't have a disadvantage vs other players behind them. It would be consistent with the other players/times of going out without drawing a card and winning delayed action. However, the rules stated when the pile is gone.
It tends give the player with it a huge advantage.

reapersaurus wrote:
How did this review get approved by GeekMod?

I know it's not easy to hear these things, and I had to take my time to write this, but if you get better it will improve the content here.

Wouldn't a private message have been a better way of informing him? There are many guides and lists and resources to help you know where to spend more time comparing, analysing, and adding value to a review- not just putting a few personal thoughts about the game and submitting it.

This should have just been put in your personal comments about Mille Bornes. I am very surprised this got thru the GeekMod process.
Please take this opportunity to learn more about reviews and to improve the community with more substantial content.

I know it's not easy to hear these things, and I had to take my time to write this, but if you get better it will improve the content here.

I, too loved Mille Bornes as a child. I would even play 4-players by myself (only child, unsupervised, living in the sticks). I managed to do very well in school despite doing everything else except showing up and paying attention (mostly) in class. Why are kids dropouts?

Anyway, add Saboteur to this category. It too is light, mixes offense and defense, and additionally adds a potential traitor each round. I actually thought of Mille Bornes when I first played it... except there are broken carts, mining lights, and pick axes. Oh, and tunnels instead of mileage cards. Best of all, you can play 3-10 players!

Thread: A strong, light four player game

Mille Bornes is another game that I wasted a lot of time during middle and high school playing. Looking back at what I did during high school, I wonder when I had time to learn, let alone be on the honor roll. What did someone have to do to miss that roll? That's what I want to know.

Last weekend I revisited this game with my friend Lee, my sister and my sister's friend. Normally, I am reluctant to revisit something (music, games, movies, books etc.) that entertained me in my youth, as I am usually let down. Mille Bornes is an example of a childhood delight that is still as entertaining as it ever was.

The object is to go 1000 km. Cards can be broken down into four types: mileage cards, where we learn that butterflies are faster than ducks. Cards that stop your opponents, because apparently you can be at a stoplight for the amount of time it takes me to go 200 km. Cards that fix your car, but don't bother seeing a mechanic about fixing your flat tire, that must be beneath a French mechanic or something. Finally, there are super-power cards. Keep running out of gas? Consider driving a tanker truck filled with fuel. Problem solved.

The game works great as a three and four player game. I wouldn't even think of playing two players though. It's light, you're not going to find yourself scratching your head at any time. If you're a fan of light card games, pick this one up. It's a good mix of offense, defense, and theme.

Mille Bornes was one of our favorite card games when the Milton Bradley edition first came out in the early Sixties, but I must say, having played it with family in the Eighties and gamers about 6 years ago, I have grown totally disenchanted with it. With competent players, it's difficult to get a trip really going. We even pulled one of each kind of hazard out of the deck, and it was still slow paced.

Though I haven't tried this, a gamer once suggested to me a house rule to reduce the luck-of-the-draw syndrome: when a player draws a card, allow him/her the option of drawing from the top of the face-down deck, or the top of the face-up discard pile. Maybe this fixes the problem, but I don't know.

Thread: Completely One Sided

I sat down with my wife, brother -n-law and mother-in-law and played this game.

Having read the directions through to get reacquainted with the game, we set down with my brother-in-law as my partner. Completely Ignoring the tip "it is usually wise to play a go card on your first turn instead of a stop on your opponents" we play a stop on the girl's battle pile. Due to the luck of the cards we are able to keep them on the side of the road with flat tires, out of gas, and even plain old stop lights. We handily won the first trip in a complete shut out.

Second trip we did the same thing. The cards were on our side and we were able to completely shut them out again.

The third trip looked like it was going to be the same thing, but the girls actually were able to go a couple hundred miles, as well as play a safety, before my brother-in-law and I won. The score was something like 6000 to 300(We didn't add up the final trip because it was clear that we had one the game).

My brother-in-law had to go so we played a three player game and the girls ganged up on me and I lost handily. It is hard for one person to come up with the fixes when two people are gunning for you.

This is fast becoming an almost hated game for me. Luck should not have such a great effect on a game like that. The one other gamer I play with my wife, sometime last year, was going good until I had a flat and didn't pick up any spare tires. The game turned into flip card over, if not a spare then discard, rinse and repeat. This happens in this game quite a lot.

Thread: Mille Bornes is now MacBornes on OS X 10.4

Having just finished reading Michel Houellebecq's Platform and discovered Mille Bornes in italics, I was fascinated as to what it was.

After a few minutes searching on Google images and Google itself, I discovered that our very own BGG had it as an entry.

So interested in this, I have bought the card game and found that someone has developed a Mac OS X version of it.

I just HAD to add it to my list of games in this Geeklist of mine:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/18953

I have yet to play it, but it looks pretty cool.
Also with four players you run into the resource scarcity problem. There are only so many fix cards, so many roll cards, and so many mile cards.

With people holding onto all the best cards a game of four usually devolves into "I can't play miles on my turn so I'm going to play something on somebody else."

This means nobody gets anywhere very fast and if the game ends before people get bored and quit, it will probably be the person with RIght-of-Way since they do not need to find the precious Roll cards.

Any answers?

It is French and so it should sound like French. "Mil Born" is about as close as you can get in English. The "l" is usually more forward in the mouth and the "o" of Bornes is a bit more open, a bit towards an "aw". Also, vowels are short in French (giving people the impression that French is spoken quickly). "Mil Born" takes twice as long to say as "Mille Bornes".

Q: Why "Bornay" and not "Bornayse"? Unilingual English speakers want to sound everything in foreign languages (that's how we can see you coming 1.6 kilometers away :-) ).
