Thread: Zombies!!! 3 (SE): A Light Review

Since this is an expansion, I am going to assume some familiarity with the base game, Zombies!!!. If you need to, the link below is my review of the base set.

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/191931

In this expansion, the players discover their local shopping mall while exploring the town.

What you get: This game comes with 30 new event cards (that's two sets of fifteen unique event cards), 15 new map tiles, and a rules sheet.

I have the second edition of this expansion. All that was really changed in this edition is updated artwork on the map tiles. The artwork is now more gritty (and captivating ) than the cartoony artwork of the first printing.

What it adds to the game: More. You get more of everything. More events, more places to explore, and more (and harder) zombies. More play time . You place the entrance to the mall into the base set of map tiles. Once you draw the mall entrance you have the option of drawing your maps tiles from the city set or the shopping mall expansion set.

There are no real additions to the base rules unless you owned the first edition. If you did, you would find some clarifications and some suggestions to speed up the game. There is one unique rule added to this expansion that applies only inside of the mall. Stores in the mall have vents inside of them. You can use these vents to crawl into the air ducts and move to the air vent spaces in other adjacent shops.

This ability can actually come in handy if you're cornered, as zombies cannot move through the vents, or if you play one of the new event cards that allows you board up a shop. You can lock the zombies out from getting you and then escape from a vent. This effect can be fun to do if you watch too many movies, but the novelty is quickly fleeting.

Another "addition" to the rules is a "second" floor to the mall. All this does is limits where you can place certain tiles and hinders movement through certain vents. More annoying than thematic.

Much like the military base expansion, you can also find a scenario in the new rule sheet that only involves the mall. This is little more than a stripped down version of the full game and as such, it is not very fun.

What do I think about all this? You've got to ask yourself some basic questions? Did you really enjoy the game by itself? Did you play it too much and all you crave now is more weapons, more buildings, and more things to explore? Do you really need to draw an event card depicting a zombie in lingerie?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you should really try to pick up this game. Otherwise, this does nothing to change the game. Fans of the genre will instantly connect with the shopping mall. I was very happy to run around a shopping mall mauling zombies. Unfortunately, a lot of the new event cards are more worthless than getting the marbles from the original game (a feat that I never thought would be possible).

The bottom line: If you like Zombies!!!, this is the one expansion you should consider picking up due only to the theme / feeling that it adds to the game.

Thread: Would someone shut off that Muzak?!?!

This, the second expansion in the Zombies_Series of games gives you 32 new cards(2 cards each of 16 new cards) and 16 new map tiles. This expansion adds a Mall to explore/raid while you try to escape a zombie disaster. Zombies!!! 3 can be used as an addition the the base game by shuffling the Front Door tile into the standard tiles. When the Front Door is drawn it is placed along with a crossroads tile immediately to ensure that your mall can expand a bit. From this point you can draw from either the Zombies!!! 3 tiles or from the base sets tiles. See below since there is a chance that the mall may not provide an escape route. You can also play it as a stand alone set of tiles for a shorter game by just using the Front Door as a starting point instead of the Town Square tile.

There is a new movement option in the game that allows you to move through air ducts from store to store. In every store and on the Helipad there is an air duct pictured somewhere. If you end your turn on an air duct, on your next turn you can skip your movement roll and move to the air duct space in an adjacent store or Helipad. Since you can get to the Helipad through the air ducts it does not need to be placed at the end of a hallway. You can place it next to a store so that the only way to get there is through the air duct.

There is also an Escalator tile that must be placed before the Helipad, since the Helipad must be on the second floor. Care must be taken that the stores on the first floor do not join with the stores on the second floor. Because of the Escalator requirement for Helipad placement, you have another option to the game. If you shuffle all the mall tiles(after removing the Front Door and a crossroads) together, there is a possibility the the Helipad will be drawn before the Escalator. As per the original rules, if you draw a tile that cannot be placed, discard it and continue your turn as normal. Alternatively, you can place the Helipad on the bottom of the Mall tiles to ensure there is an escape route.

The Good
- There are 4 others that allow you to be in any store or building and another 18 can be played at any point. The other 10 require you to be in a particular store in the mall.
- When used in addition to the base game, Zombies!!! 3 adds the ability for the game to end faster. Since the Zombies!!! 3 Helipad tile is shuffled in regularly. It could be anywhere in the tile stack, provided that the Escalator appears first.
- The uncertainty of whether there will be an escape route or not adds some extra fun.
- There are a couple of new scenarios to change the gameplay which can be used with other expansions as well. One involves rescuing people before you escape. The other starts a player off with the keys to the helicopter, adding in a King of the Hill type of mechanic.
-A nice addition to the game for a fan of the Zombies!!! series. In particularly, fans of Dawn of the Dead.

The Bad
- This expansion is unlikely to change your mind about the Zombies!!! games if you are not already a fan. As it changes very little of the game play.

As a fan of the series, I think this is an nice expansion, it is my second least favorite of all the expansions. Again, if you are not a fan of the series, this expansion, or any other expansion for that matter, is not going to change your mind as none of them change the game by much.

D'oh! I fixed the braino.

I agree that 3.5 is the best expansion. My order would be 3.5, 5, 2, and then 3 when it comes to expansions. Of course, I think you should buy them all so the order isn't that important

Oddly enough, this one is my FAVORITE (but maybe that's just because of "Dawn of the Dead")

Overall, I think 3.5 is the best expansion all around for the base set (as it's all event cards). After that, it's a question of what type of new setting you prefer. (i'm not a big fan of 4 though, unless you're playing it as a tie-in to MidEvil )
---MS

Thread: Christmas at the mall

My review was made using a copy of the game I received from the publisher.

Mall Walkers is fun, but I have to admit it is my least favorite expansion in the series. I'm sure it's partly because I don't like malls, but I think it's mostly because many of the cards and location in this game are very specific to this expansion.

Components
The game comes with 16 mall tiles, 32 news cards, and new rules.

Setting
As with most of the expansions, this one moves Zombies!!! into a new locale, in this case a mall. Rules are provided for either using the expansion as a stand-alone (although you'd still need the base Zombies!!! set) area or as an addition to other expansions.
The expansion does pretty well in staying on theme. If you like malls (or like the idea of killing zombies in a mall) then this is a good expansion for you.

Rules
The rules for this one are pretty simple. There is one special location and one new movement rule.
Instead of rolling a die and moving, players may move via the airduct. The airduct lets you move from an airduct space in one store to the airduct in the next store. This cna help you avoid zombies and feels very thematic. To do it, you have to end your movement on an air duct. On your next turn, you don't roll to move, you just move to an airduct in an adjacent location.
The special tile is the escalator which marks the beginning of the second floor. This isn't that big a deal except tha the mall's helipad must be attached to the second floor.

Recommendation
I think this is a good but not great expansion. If you love Zombies!!! or malls then you should definitely get it. If you're debating between this and another expansion I would go with the other one first unless you want more tiles - in which case this one would beat 3.5 Not Dead Yet!!! the all card expansion.

Thread: Quick and Easy Slice and Dice

My wife and I have played the base game of Zombies and Zombies 2 a fair bit when we first got into gaming, mostly in 3 and 4 player sessions. After we really got into Euros though, our Zombies expansions just sat there forlorne, like a lone undead akwardly strolling down an empty aisle.

But today we decided to try something a little different. We played Mall Walkers without the base game, and with half the 3.5 deck.

There are only 16 tiles in the expansion alone, so we put the helipad on the bottom. The game plays very fast this way, and in our first match my wife beat me quite soundly.

In our second match, I got off to a good start with a good roll and a "Clearance Sale" card to clear the aisles to get to the Department Store. I also placed the Outfitters shop, which is loaded with goods, right next to the department store so I could access it through the air vents.

Penny was having some bad luck with her rolls, but was in the process of trying to clean out some of the smaller shops. As there are few tiles in the expansions, it wasn't long before there were only a two left, which turned out to be the escalator and, of course, the helipad.

After cleaning out the Department Store and the Outfitters shop, I was closer to the helipad and in better shape. Penny placed the helipad on the second floor, but adjacent to the Food Court, where it could be accessed by air vents, and she was quite close to the Food Court.

I played a "They're Coming for You ________" card to slow her down, and headed for the helipad. Soon there was a whole chorus line of zombies streaming out of the helipad to greet me, as Penny tried to slow my approach.

However, there was no stopping the shotgun guy, and when I was one space away from the helicopter, I also had 24 zombies. Victory was assured, and I won.

I strongly recommend playing the expansions by themselves, at least for a two player session they work very well. Half of the 3.5 deck also added alot to the game.

Also, I have to admit it was quite nice to play a good blood and guts, hammer your opponent game for a change. Not that I am tired of Euros, but variety is definitely a good thing.

Thread: Session Report

Well, I played Zombies for the first time last Friday. Cool little game. We played with some of the ideas from BGG, mainly to speed things up. The changes made were:

1) Movement is hearts + 2 instead of die roll.
2) Move 3 Zombies at end of turn instead of die roll.
3) Mix helipad in with last 4 tiles for a bit of uncertainty.
4) 20 kills is a win instead of 25.

The games certainly moved along even though we were all playing for the first time. We played 2 games of Zombies! and then broke out Ra and played once. All in less than 3 hours.

First game of Zombies! was kind of a warmup. We played the basic game and messed up some of the rules.

Next we played the Z3 expansion...the subject of my session report. We played with only the mall tiles instead of adding it into the town. Naturally, this sped up the game significantly. If we pulled a card dealing with "buildings" (in the town) we immediately discarded it and picked another until we got one for the mall.

Anyway, on to the game. I went first, followed by Dave, Alex, then Bill. I'll orient the board as if North is up from where I was sitting.

I started off going East, blasting a couple of Zombies in some store, and grabbing a quick heart and bullet. Good first turn.

Alex followed my direction, while Dave and Bill went West. I quickly ran out of targets as Alex and I just weren't picking great tiles and it seemed Alex was getting most of the kills. Meanwhile, Dave and Bill were absolutely swamped in zombies and Dave was racking up kills quickly.

I decided to peel off to the North by myself. Hmmm...perhaps not such a great move. I found myself overwhelmed and had to back off. However, the escalator came out and was placed to the North, so I was in a good spot, it seemed.

Since we only played with the Z3 tiles, the helipad was due soon. Alex and Bill charged North along with me. Dave was lamenting the fact that he was stuck far in the Southwest and surrounded by zombies. However, he had a chance if he got a bit of luck and racked up the kills.

The helipad came out and it was a heck of a fight to get to it. It was anyone's game as Alex, Bill, and I blasted through zombies and nailed each other with cards every chance we got. Dave kept chugging through piles of zombies and was not out of it, either.

And for the amazing finish....Bill got to the center of the helipad and had to finish off one more zombie. He rolled a 3. Dead! It was his last life. Lost the game by a pip.

I moved up and got one space away from victory. Dave killed a couple more zombies and was up to 18 or so. Alex moves. He gets to the center of the helipad. He has one life left. He kills the zombie and wins!

If Alex didn't win, Dave and I were only one turn away (and with plenty of lives and bullets). It came down to the wire for all 4 players and was tense - but funny too. The theme in this game gets you into it. You feel like you're in Dawn of the Dead.

We'll probably be playing again with a bigger board this Friday.
Thread: Preview

I picked up Zombies!!! 3: Mall Walkers the other day because I'm a fan of the base game. Here's what you get in the expansion:

New Cards - more event cards with a "mall" theme. The cards have some fantastic artwork on them, but they don't introduce any new mechanics into the game.
New Tiles - these are used to built a separate "shopping mall", much like the army base in Zombies!!! 2. Again, the mall is basically exactly like the town. Nothing really new here except for the addition of "air ducts" which allow you to move between adjacent tiles without using the hallways.
New Rules - there are one or two tiny rule additions - namely the air ducts in the mall.
Scenarios - there are two scenarios that offer alternate victory conditions. There's one scenario where you try to capture the "keys" from another player before reaching the helipad. There's another scenario where you have to rescue survivors in the mall. Both introduce only very minor rule changes

That's it. I've got to say that for $15 versus the $20 that the original game cost, I'm fairly disappointed with what you get in the box - basically just a few cards and a few tiles. At least with Zombies 2 you got some glow in the dark zombies too. Future expansions should at least fill the dead-space (pun intended) with some more plastic zombies to increase the bang-for-the-buck factor.

I would also have liked to see this expansion introduce some new mechanics to the game to freshen it up a bit, but it's basically just more of the same. The mall has two floors and air ducts, but it doesn't really change the gameplay at all. I do really like the new cards though. The artwork and humor on the cards lives up to the same high standard set by the original game. More is definitely better in this case.

Overall, I'd say if you're a die-hard Zombies fan, go for it. Don't expect a whole lot, but this expansion definitely does add some atmosphere. If you're lukewarm on the base game, I'd say pass.
