Thread: General Comment

Not an ironic title, spot on in this case. What at first seems to be a clever card game boils down to a blind bidding system where the lowest bid wins. You win the points you bid, and since you are aiming to be the first to 150 points the game quickly becomes interminable. Not one that I will be playing again, too many superior card games - I would rate this a 4.
Thread: Session Report

After being off last week due to my attendance at Gulf Games 6 (which was simply INCREDIBLE!), it was back to the Bungalow for more gaming. A smaller than usual turnout greeted my return, however, as only nine gamers made it to the table.

However, a monumental accomplishment occurred ... we did not play Bluff!

ON THE TABLE: Shit!, Cosmic Encounter, History of the World, High Bid, Feudal, Discretion, Take 6

ROLL CALL: Steven Maus, Steven Pouey, Ashton Arnold, Darren Arnold, Jim Fairchild, Lenny Leo, Keith Canova, Joey Konyha, Greg Schloesser

Sorry ... that's the actual name of this game.	I'm curious as to the origin of this word, however, as this is a German game. The German equivalent for this English term is 'scheisse'. To my knowledge, "shit" isn't a word used in the German language. Perhaps it has just been borrowed by Germans and has the same meaning as in English. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Following a bowl of jambalya, Jim Fairchild introduced Lenny, Steven M., Steven P. and myself to this haphazard little card game.

Each card depicts a central circle of five colors arranged in order to complete the circle: Blue, green, yellow, red and purple (I don't think this is the correct order, by the way, but it will give you the idea anyway). Further, the cards are numbered 1 - 10 for each color.

Players are dealt four cards plus one 'shit' card. The top card of the deck is then revealed and players simultaneously lay a card face down to the table. The idea is to try to play a card which is the closest in number and color to the revealed card, yet exceeds it in value according to the order of the colors.

For example: Suppose the revealed card is a Yellow 6.	The following cards are played:

Jim: Yellow 9
Greg: Red 2
Steven: Blue 10
Lenny: Purple 3

Using the same order as I listed earlier, Jim would be the closest to the revealed card. He receives points equal to the difference. So, he played a yellow '9' and the revealed card was a yellow '6'. Jim receives 3 points.

Suppose Jim had played a green '4' instead of his yellow '9'. Then, since no yellow cards were played, the next closest card would be the red '2'. So, Greg (that's me!) would receive 6 points. Why 6? Well, since each color has 10 numbers, then the difference from the yellow '6' to the red '2' is six.	Thus, I get 6 points.

It's really not as confusing as this sounds. The math becomes quite clear and is easy to calculate.

Instead of playing a number card, a player can play his 'shit' card. This simply allows him to draw another number card into his hand and retrieve his just played 'shit' card.

The challenge in the game comes in trying to lay a card which will yield you significant points, but not create such a large spread between the revealed card that your opponents sneak in with a card which is closer in value.

Still, there is VERY little control in this game. It's Raj with a few twists. About the only real strategy is to carefully watch the amount of cards each of your opponents have, then try to play a card with a big spread when they are nearly depleted of cards.	In this manner, you just might sneak in and score some big points.

The game is nothing more than a fun pastime. I could see it being popular with my wife's family, but I know that they would object to the game's title. So, I think I'll just be happy to play this one whenever Jim happens to bring it along.

After a very slow start wherein we all seemed happy to score single digit points, Jim broke the game wide open with a couple of huge scores when our hands were depleted. He won this game handily:

Jim 125, Steven M. 67, Steve P. 55, Lenny 28, Greg 26

Ratings: Jim 7, Greg 5, Lenny 5, Steve P. 5, Steven M. 1.5
Thread: Session Report

I'd only played this once before, and that was several months back. Truth-be-told, I wasn't terribly impressed by the game back then. Still, with a little time remaining before calling it an evening, I figured it was time to bring the game back out again. I was joined by Willerd, Ashton and Joey.

This was a 2-player race between Ashton and I. After Ashton took an early lead with an impressive 33 point turn, we see-sawed back and forth for most of the remainder of the game. I took the lead with a 25 point turn late in the game, but Ashton sealed the win with an enormous 45 points to shoot past 100 points and claim the victory. Amazingly, Joey captured only 1 point during the entire game ... which certainly didn't help his rating!

Finals: Ashton 123, Greg 80, Willerd 42, Joey 1

Ratings: Greg 5, Ashton 4, Willerd 4, Joey 2
