Thread: basic attack

For those that are looking for a simpler version of attack i just downloaded my simple attack variant in the file download section. The reason i wanted to come up with a simpler variant is because i always have to try and convince friends to play a game with me and if its at all difficult or involved they switch of and lose interest. Therefore i sort of mixed attack with risk and eliminated a lot of things and when i finally convinced them to play they quite enjoyed it and it was real easy to explain the new rules to them so i thouhgt id share them to see what you guys think.

Thread: Extreme Makeover Attack! Edition

How to turn a 5/10 game into a 10/10 game!

INTRODUCTION

Attack! is half of a fantastic game. Unfortunately the base game does not work well on its own, requiring at least some elements of the Expansion and a few significant rules tweaks in order to make it a playable game. Over the years, after many game plays and with the help of some very useful advice by other BGG users, I have managed to turn the base game of Attack! into (in my personal and extremely subjective opinion) the best game of my collection. What follows are a list of the major problems with the base game, the physical components that you’ll need in order to play my Extreme Makeover variant, and the rules for playing it. (I will not type out all the rules – only those which are different from the base game.) This variant will be useful for anyone who wishes to enjoy the simplicity of the base game without diving into all of the Expansion rules.

But first I want to give credit where credit is due. Both the “Action Cards” method of threaded turns and the “Economics Tokens” method of assigning specific economies to specific regions seem to have been devised by user “ProgFlower” (AKA Francois Bedard) way back in 2003, as is evidenced by these images:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/30250

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/29652

I owe Francois a huge debt of gratitude for substantially improving the Attack! game play. The creator of the much more practical square Economics Tokens which I link below appears to be anonymous. User “HiveGod” (AKA Chris Tannhauser) made the very attractive version of Francois’ Action Cards using the box cover art, and I copied his presentation style for my version of the Action Cards. If you are playing the full Attack! Expansion, I highly recommend downloading Chris’ Action Cards here:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/20602

Regardless, if you appreciate the contributions of these users, please do take a second to go give them a quick “thumb up” at the very least!

PROBLEMS WITH THE “AS IS” BASE GAME

What follows is a list of the major problems that myself (with the help of the aforementioned BGG users), have attempted to correct:

-uneven starting production abilities create an initial imbalance
-fighting for control of only half the world!
-ridiculously long down-time between turns
-the last player to move on the first turn of the game can already find themselves to be at a serious disadvantage
-nearly non-existent naval rules (the “control of the sea” option is highly unsatisfactory and even more highly unbalanced)
-land battles which strongly favour the defender and therefore discourage Attack!ing
-random exchanges of economics cards between players
-expensive cost of production makes building up any sort of substantial army/navy with which to Attack! other players very slow and difficult

WHAT YOU NEED

Here’s what you’ll need in order to play my Attack! variant:
-1 copy of Attack!
-1 copy of Attack! Expansion (face it, if you own Attack!, you’ll need the Expansion eventually!)
-Action Cards – http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/32210 – Recommendation: You’ll need to print off one set of cards for each player. I printed mine onto label paper, stuck them onto a thin, shiny/slippery-textured black cardboard, and then sprayed them with “Krylon Crystal Clear” acrylic coating. This created a perfect set of cards. Of course, you could simply print them onto decent card stock if your printer can handle that sort of thing. (The other great thing about these cards is that they double as player aids during the game.)
-Economics Tokens - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/4859 - Recommendation: These will be used as normal game counters, so it would be best to print this onto label paper and mount it on a thicker cardboard prior to cutting them out with a paper cutter.
-This set of rules changes (available for download here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/32220)

RULES TWEAKS

For easy reference, I’ll use the roman numerals that correspond to the sections in the Attack! rulebook. Again, what follows are only the changes to the base game rules, not the entire set of rules.

VI. The Gameboard

If you’re playing with at least 4 players (and I don’t recommend playing this game with fewer), why not use the entire map of the world!

Sea areas will now come into play for naval movement.

VII. Setting up the Game

Take the plastic ships that match your starting naval cards and place them in a sea zone of your choice as per Expansion VII rules.

There are a total of 83 land regions on the entire world map, and 92 square Economics Tokens. Therefore, prior to the game, remove 9 of the Population (“POP”) Economics Tokens.

Rather than randomly drawing 4 Economics Cards at the start of the game, each player will start with an Oil, a Minerals, a Factories, and a Rail Transport card, each with a different value from 1 to 4. They will also take one Economics Token to match each of their cards. Every player will not have the identical value in each individual economy (example: Oil 3), but all players will have the same total value and a complete “set”. This means that, when taking into account the capital city, every player will have an equal starting production value of (1+2+3+4)X2(+10)=30 PPs.

After players have placed their military units and capital cities, they will take turns placing all 4 of their Economics Tokens, 1 in each of their 4 starting regions. All the remaining Economics Tokens will be turned upside-down, mixed up, and randomly placed face down, 1 on each neutral region. Every land region will now have a fixed economy type and value associated with it, which will not be changed unless with a “Trade” action.

VIII. The Turns

There will now be only 6 choices for a player’s 3 actions (Trade, Strategic Move, Diplomatic Blitz, Move and Attack!, Blitzkrieg Move, and Build New Units) instead of 7, since most of the naval rules from the Expansion will be incorporated into this variant. “Diplomatic Blitz” is still the only action that can be performed multiple times in a single turn.

Each player now has a hand of 6 Action Cards to match their 6 possible actions. At the beginning of each turn, every player will choose one Action Card and place it facedown in front of them. All cards are then revealed simultaneously. The player who has the lowest ORDER number on their card will perform the action listed on that card. The player who has the next lowest ORDER number will then do the action listed on their card, and so on until all players have completed one action. If 2 or more players have played the same Action Card, they must roll the 2 blue dice, with the player rolling highest performing their action first, and so on. After all players have completed their first action, any player who played a “Diplomatic Blitz” will take that card back into their hand, and all players will then choose a second card. This continues until all players have completed 3 actions, at which point all Action Cards are taken back into the players’ hands and a new turn begins. At any point, a player may for some reason choose not to play an Action Card, and skip an action entirely.

[Alternate Action Card play: Mark each player’s hand of 6 Action Cards with a different colour or symbol and ignore the ORDER numbers on the cards. At the beginning of each turn, every player will choose one Action Card and place it facedown in front of them. All cards are then gathered up, shuffled, and laid out in a row beside the board. The first 2 Action Cards are then flipped face up. The player whose card is at the front of the row performs the action listed on the card. When this action is complete, the third card in line is flipped face up and the player whose card is second in line completes the action shown. This carries on until all players have performed their action. Any player who played a “Diplomatic Blitz” action takes that card back into their hand and all other cards are set aside. This process is repeated for the 2 remaining actions, then players receive all their cards back and a new turn begins. At any point, a player may for some reason choose not to submit an Action Card, and skip an action entirely.]

IX. The Military Units

Players will use the plastic ships from the Expansion for naval movement on the board, and the Naval Cards will be used to carry out the naval battles.

X. Movement

You will now include the Expansion XVI and XVII rules in order to incorporate naval units into your “Move and Attack!” action, with the following additional changes:

-Submarines cannot “control” a sea zone, and therefore cannot block enemy amphibious or naval movement.
-If another player performs an amphibious move with land units along a sea lane which travels through a sea zone in which you have one or more submarines, you may choose to take a shot at each of their units with each of your subs (exception: submarines may not shoot at planes in this manner). On a roll of 5 or 6, that land unit is eliminated. Afterwards, if any player has one or more destroyers and/or aircraft carriers in the same sea zone as the submarine(s) that just attacked, they may in turn attack the sub(s). Each destroyer and aircraft carrier may take one shot at each submarine. A destroyer must roll a 5 or 6 to sink the sub, while an aircraft carrier must roll a 4, 5, or 6 to sink it.
-Just like other ships, submarines cannot block enemy naval units from moving through the sea zone which they currently occupy, however they may choose whether or not to initiate a sea battle if the ships end their movement in the same sea zone. Similarly, subs alone do not block enemy ships from retreating into their sea zone, but they may choose to initiate a sea battle with any ships that do retreat into their sea zone.

XII. Strategic Move

The Expansion XVIII rules are added. The same submarine rules with regards to using sea lanes for strategic movement apply.

XIII. Land Battles

Instead of the defender firing first and removing casualties, then the attacker firing and removing casualties in every round of battle, all rounds after the first one will occur simultaneously. In the first round of battle, after each player has lined up 4 units, the defender will fire and remove casualties, then the attacker will do the same. Both players will then reinforce to 5 units. The defender will then fire and the attacker will lay down the units that are hit, but before they are removed the attacker will fire with all 5 units and both players will then remove the casualties. Both players next reinforce to 6 units and the battle will carry on in this manner until it is over.

The special ability of each land unit, as listed in the pink box of the Expansion XXIII rules, will also apply, as will the “OPTIONAL RULE” in the same section.

XIV. Control of the Sea

No longer applies! Woot!

XV. Naval Battles

Naval Battles will now occur when a player moves one or more ships into a region containing one or more enemy ships (with the possible exception of submarines, as described above). The Expansion XXIV rules apply.

When a naval battle occurs, the plastic ships are used for reference so that both players know exactly what ships the other player has in the battle. Every time a ship is sunk in the battle of the cards, the corresponding plastic ship is removed from the board.

XVI. Diplomatic Blitz

Everything remains the same, except if the region that you choose to blitz is adjacent to a region that you already own, then you must roll a 7 or higher (instead of 8 or higher) in order to succeed. The adjacency of regions can be traced through sea lanes, but can be blocked by hostile players who control the sea zones through which those sea lanes travel (requiring the acting player to roll 9 or higher instead). The hostile player must tell the acting player whether they will block the Blitz action before the acting player commits to blitzing that particular region.

XVII. Neutral Regions and XVIII. Economics Cards

All neutral regions now have a face-down Economics Token on them. If you win the region through a “Diplomatic Blitz”, turn the token face-up and take the corresponding Economics Card into your hand. If you move army units into the region to invade it, turn the Economics Token face up and begin a battle with the army that is listed on the corresponding Economics Card. If you lose a region to another player, you must give them the Economics Card from your hand that corresponds to the Economics Token that is in the region you just lost.

XX. Trade

If a player chooses to play a “Trade” Action Card, they must at the same time lay down a second Action Card in case no other player agrees to a trade. If this is the case, the player takes the “Trade” card back into their hand, reveals their second card, and play proceeds as per the lowest ORDER number. If the player successfully carries out a “Trade” action, the second Action Card that they had played is taken back into their hand.

The trade action proceeds as normal, except if Economics Cards are traded, the corresponding Economics Tokens on the board must be physically swapped within the players’ land regions (this is the only time that the Economics Tokens are moved).

The pink box from the Expansion XV rules applies, except that a hostile player who would normally block the trade has the option of allowing the trade to occur if they wish.

XXI. Building New Units

The production point (PP) costs have been decreased. They are now as follows:

-Infantry – 3 PPs
-Artillery – 5 PPs
-Tank – 7 PPs
-Plane – 10 PPs
-Destroyer – 3 PPs
-Submarine – 3 PPs
-Battleship – 7 PPs
-Aircraft Carrier – 13 PPs

Newly built land units are placed in any region or regions that you own. Newly built naval units will be placed as per the Expansion XXVI rules (including “…place them in a sea area or sea areas that…”).

XXII. Winning the Game

I have added a second tie-breaker of the largest navy, in the very unlikely event that 2 or more players are tied for the most regions and have an equal number of land units.

And that’s it! Enjoy!

WHAT’S NEXT

What I have just provided is a way of perfecting the Attack! base game. While the full expansion is certainly a fantastic game, it is not without its several flaws. But not to worry, because Attack! Deluxe is in the works (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/35276)! I have had the great pleasure of playtesting this fine game, and I can’t tell you how excited I am by it! The designers have somehow managed to both simplify and improve the game play of the Expansion.

Now stay tuned for my forthcoming and even more extreme “Extreme Makeover Age Of Mythology Edition”, which will hopefully make an appearance sometime this Spring. And after that, perhaps I’ll tackle Hellas, and who know what else! Now if it wasn't all so damn time-consuming...
Thread: Solid game

This is my first review, so bear with me.

Components: Although some people don't like them, I must say, I love them. Who cares if they are generic, I sure don't. There are infantry, tanks, artillery and planes in six different colors for six different players. There are plenty of each piece for each person, so you don't have to worry about using poker chips or buying extras off ebay. I suggest not twisting the miniatures out of their sprues, because if you do, the infantry stand funny and it doesn't look very good. You should use an exacto knife or hobby knife of some kind. Your pieces will look much nicer and the infantry will stand better.

Gameplay: I'm not going to explain the rules in detail, you can find them online. Combat is conducted using special, six sided dice. On the dice are the pictures of an infantry, tank, artillery, two planes, and a blank. So, if you have four infantry fighting and you roll two infantry, a tank and a blank, you get two hits on the opposing units. This promotes combined arms, because if you just load up on infantry, you can only cover one of the six sides on the dice. But, if you have all four units, you cover five of six sides of the dice. The combat is really well done. Your economy is easy to figure out. At the beginning, you get four economy cards. You add up the totals, alone with +10 for your capital city, then that's your production that turn. When you conquer a territory, you get another card. This also works well, and keeps the game moving smoothly.

Who is this game good for?: Anyone who is getting tired of simplistic war games like Risk, but isn't ready to step up to a game like Axis and Allies. This game is also good for those who love giant piles of miniatures.

Closing thoughts: I really enjoy this game. The miniatures, at least for me, are to die for. The rules take five minutes to learn, but there is a lot of strategy to be had. Considering all the miniatures you get with Attack! and the $20 price tag, I can't urge you enough to go buy it.

p.s. If you have any critique on my review, please tell me. As I already stated, this is my first review.

I purchased the extra units (In new colors) from the website. That IS worth the cost. I was also able to score extra specialty dice.

This was when the game was new. And when I contacted the company, the wife of the game designer gave me a couple freebes, since I said that I was doing a demo at a store. (I was. )

I LOVE specialty dice.

I'll have to take a pic of the extra colors. I especially enjoy my "stormtrooper white" units when I play fascist. They look even better than black! Spiffy!

I was just perusing the FRED/Eagle Games site at http://www.eaglegames.net and spotted this at the bottom of the page:

"Attack! Deluxe is in the early stages of playtesting and looks like it will rekindle the excitement of one of Eagle Games' most successful designs. Mike Selinker, of Risk and Axis and Allies fame, has teamed up with Sean Brown to do what he does best...make great games better with revised additions. Mike has had great success with his revisions of A&A, Risk, and AD&D, and we are excited to be working with him on Attack! Deluxe."

With curiosity peaked, I found this post from Keith Blume (the site Admin) in Eagle Games' Attack! forum (dated 8/30/07):

"We have the rule set in place for playtesting so Attack Deluxe is proceeding nicely. We will be circulating prototypes to several games stores, so if you have any FLGS you want to recommend, feel free to send me an e-mail at keithblume (at) gmail.com"
http://eaglegames.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=7067

It will be interesting to see those "revised additions" to the original, which by all accounts fell just shy of classic status.

the battle part makes no sense. The point of Attack! is strength not in numbers as much as combined arms. If you roll for all your tanks at once, that is one in six chances to hit. But, if you roll for an infantry, tank, artillary and airplane at the same time, your chances rise to five in six.

I realized something. My first games were boring because everybody was in one corner of the map. By the time someone reached another, the armies were huge, so whoever won that battle would easily defeat the opposing player. Then, I tried what they suggested in the rule book. You may only have one territory in each continent. This is a flawless suggestion, as now there is more contact between players. Just my opinion though.

Yes, Axis and Allies pieces were all meant to look like really german tanks or russian infantry. but there are no specific countries in this game, so the fact that they are all generic makes sense. And I also agree with the person above. Games should not be reviewed by how pretty the box or rulebook is. It may not be the greatest game ever, but people who look for easy simple games that are fun will find a lot in attack!. -Jeffrey

I diplomatic blitzed my way to victory as a monarchy, fighting maybe 3 battles against neutrals and one huge battle as the defender right before the game ended. I felt this was a product of a 4 player game, though, It might not be such a problem with more players (which unfortunately we didn't have).

Thread: Re: Attack! - Impressions from a Grognard

OK, I own this game and played it three times before it made the shelf forever. I was hoping for a better risk, but I found it dissapointing that aircraft and tanks are just infantry with more ability to hit; thus in late game you end up with a pile of bits just like risk, and these run about the board until destoryed or victorious. Personally, I find the simplicity of risk, though now completely overplayed, more universal and appealing that ATTACK!.

Having said that, I am somewhat in dissagreement with your review in two areas. A&A, Days of Wonder, et al, should not be the litmus test for games of this genre. The quality of the artwork on the box is not, in my opinion, in any way and important function of a review. Before, A&A, there was Shogun, Fortress America, Buck Rodgers and the Battle for the 25th Century--all of which outclassed A&A in number and quality of miniatures. While I agree the minis in ATTACK! are suspect at best, none of these "bits" games are representative of "the way things need to be". Bits games sell because people buy shiney things, and because people are generally more apt to affiliate with a tank model than a cardboard counter with a picture of a tank.

But, it has been my experience that the more junk in the box, the less thought in the game. The more art on the box, the less eligance in the mechaniccs. In short, ATTACK! is a marginal game for me soley because of the trivial mechanics. I rated it a 3 on playability/replayability.

I would hate to think that games must meet a "bits" quota and "box art" quality in order to sell these days.

Jay

Yeah, when I was thinking about it afterwards, it occurred to me that perhaps the Navy cards were part of the basic game after all. And incidentally, one of the greatest improvements to the game that the expansion brings is in the aspect of naval warfare.

Thank you very much!

What I found at the thrift store does have Navy cards in it. But according to the rules, it appears they're part of the basic game, not the expansion. I'll count up what I've got anyway, and see what matches.

Thread: Re: How many cards?

Hi Drew,

I've combined both my Attack! and Attack! Expansion into a single box, however I've counted up all my cards and here is what I've come up with.

I believe the following cards are for the basic game:

92 Economics cards
-21 Oil
-19 Factories
-19 Rail Transport
-19 Minerals
-14 Population

And I believe the following are for the expansion:

10 Economics "Trade Route" cards

72 Political Action cards

24 Technology cards

54 Navy cards
-15 Destroyers
-15 Submarines
-12 Battleships
-12 Aircraft Carriers

If any of the numbers don't seem to add up, send me a GeekMail and let me know, and we'll try to sort it out. Also, you really need to do yourself a favour and pick up the expansion. I purchased this game and the expansion a few years ago. It was responsible for starting my current obsession with board games, and, despite having picked up dozens more games since, this one has remained my favourite. However without the expansion it is definitely an incomplete game.

Enjoy!

Josh.

Thread: Re: please describe how to attack in "attack"

My game group has decided that the title of the game is really a misnomer. It should be called "Diplomatic Blitz" because that's the most effective way to gain territory. If you ever do actually atack, your victories tend to be relatively phyrric and your offensive is stopped and you are open to attacks from other people, who end up killing their units if they attack. We couldn't figure out how this game was supposed to work and we never did figure out how to effectively attack without building up a ton of units, which takes forever in this game because everything costs so much. Needless to say, we don't try to play this anymore and none of us saw the brilliance in the fighting mechanic because it heavily favors the defender even though the game title would suggest it would be otherwise. Nice bits to use in other games though.
