Thread: Re: Meaningfull Alignments

I like the idea of making alignments more meaningful. However, I don't like the idea of removing player choice from a game that, frankly, already has very little.

What about something like this:

1) If an evil player lands on a square which already contains another player or players, they gain 1 experience if they attack another player and lose 1 experience if they don't.

2) If a good player lands on a square with an evil player (regardless of whether it contains a player or players of other alignments), they gain 1 experience for attacking the evil player, and lose 1 experience for attacking a non-evil player or no players.

3) If a good player lands on a square with at least one non-evil player, and no evil players, they gain 1 experience for not attacking another player, and lose 1 experience for attacking another player.

4) Neutral players don't gain or lose experience in this way (perhaps Neutral players lose experience for attacking the bandit and gain it for paying them).

Thread: Beaten by Him.

My son was crawling around under my bed the other day when he came across my 1983 copy of Talisman. He then proceeded to mention it about every other hour for the next few days, until I finally agreed to play a game with him today.

I always play this game with a number of house rules, the important ones are...

1) Start with 4 gold.
2) You can use as many weapons as you can carry.
3) You can wear as many armours and helmets and use as many shields as you can carry.
3) You can have as many spells as you have Craft.

These three rules allow you to get started quicker, you have enough money to buy an axe and you can build up some strength quickly by carrying a couple of swords and whatnots.

My son started off with the Woodsman and I had the bad luck to get the Ninja. I dislike the Ninja because he cant take followers.

Almost immediately I ran into trouble losing gold to a couple of adventure cards, a life to a dragon and another to the depredations of my sons Woodsman. While I was sailing downhill into deathsville he was collecting tons of gold and followers.

He switftly used his woodsman abilities to capture a Lion to fight with him. He also got a Unicorn, and a female whos title I can't remember, the Champion, horse and cart, warhorse and the Gnome. Then to rub salt in my wounds he used the other woodsman ability to cross the river to the middle region without an axe.

I then made the mistake of telling him that I'd be coming up the stairs to follow him. So... he toaded me with a spell. My next three turns moving only one space and losing what few goodies I'd managed to gain.

While I was toadying around he made a few circuits of the middle region losing a life in the desert but also picking up plenty of Craft from a pool.

When the toading had worn off I ended up having to do a lap of the outer region to get back to where my stuff had been left. Every roll made me either go the wrong way because the alternative would be a big baddie, including at least two dragons by this time.

He visited the wizard, got a mission and was returning to get his Talisman by the time I'd managed to pick up my lost goodies and cross the river.

The alarm went off, we had five minutes left. I was expecting to have to use the other scoring house rule which we apply when no one has won and time runs out. ( The rule is that you score 1 point for each point of your statistics, and 1 point for each gold ).

In two twift turns I lost a life in the desert and the last to a monster.

I resurected as the Druid back in the outer region and my son managed to get to the entrance to the inner region when time ran out. I told him that he was easily going to win on points, but the sad look in his eye told me he wanted to try for the finish.

I caved in and told him we would speed through his run on the Crown of Command. Smiles all round.

He entered the mines, using his Gnome follower, easily passed. Met a single vampire, losing two followers. Met a single lizard, wasted it and entered into the Crown of Command

Once again I was totally beaten by "Him".

Game time, 1 hour.

Also, there are a few evil characters that have special abilities that allow them to do something other than just attack another PC. The alignment rule defers to the special ability in those cases.

Thread: Meaningfull Alignments

My group always felt the distinction between good, neutral and evil was a bit feint hearted in this game so we created the following variant:

If a character is Evil they MUST attack another player character if there is one in the space they land in.

If a character is Good they may NOT attack another player character if there is one in the space they land in. On the other hand if a Good character arrives at the Crown of Command and survives for one full turn then the player automatically wins. Good characters may not use the Crown's abilities.

This has no effect on playing spells, events and so forth against one another. It also has no effect on defending against another character's attack.

We have played this extensively and find it adds that certain something. For example in our most recent game I was the Thief, Blake was the Leprechaun and Phaedra was the Gladiator. That gave us the full range of alignments. Phaedra spent a bit of time trying to stomp on us, while Blake ran around trying to find things and avoid us as a good Leprechaun should Meanwhile I opportunistically stole from the other players and tried to build my collection of goodies.

It was hard for Blake to hold our development back without directly challenging us so he built his characters strength to minimal effective ability for a run, and as soon as he attempted to get his Leprechaun to the Crown we had to chase after him and slow him down. I let the evil Gladiator rush through the portal while I used spells to keep him off balance. He just made it to the Crown, waited a full turn and became the winner, bringing goodness and light to all the land.

Edit: Yes, good characters can still fight monsters since technically they are attacking.

When i was 7 years old I got Talisman, I thought that it was a fantastic game such fun to play over the years I got the Expansion, Adventure, Dungeon and Timescape sets to go with it. After what i had seen of the city I didnt want it.

This game moved with me many times and got played up until me going to university.

So this is a good condition game. All original components with some wear. Still loved and played.

What happens at uni. A friend asks to play the game we all go to his play the game and then after rather than clearing up there and then we all crash out. In the morning the game has dissapeared as has one of the 2nd year uni students. No one has a contact for him, he turned up as a friend of a friend. What kind of git does this?

Ah well its waht 7 or 8 years ago now but I still miss it

Upon encountering him you have to roll the die. on a "1" it states the he ignores you. Now in German the word is not as common, so the two of us (being like ten years old) figured since the guy looked kinda ruff it ought to mean he kills you. Years later it dawned on us that that might not be what it means...
Ciao! What a wonderful collection! Just a curiosity can you post your pictures of Necromancy's Isle? I didn't know that after Rectocracy GW Team had realesed also another prototype! I have read on Robert Harris website about Rectocracy but Necromancy wasn't mentioned! Finally, how have you started your Talisman addiction? I was only a D&D player and I wasn't so interested in Talisman because it looked like a game of goose! In fact playing such an easy game can be enjoyble with novice players and Gary Chalk was a mervellous artist! Now, I collect fantasy stuff from 70' and 80' and I am buying also Talisman copies all around the world! Do you know something about Gary's career? A lot of early GW graphic artists are a little unknow these days!
Saluti Antonio!

Thread: The legendary Wolf bros. session

Me and my brother used to play Talisman 24/7 when we were younger.
and there was this one legendary session:
we set up the game (if I remember correctly he was playing the Bard character and I was starting with the Ranger) and both chose a "personal" die from our dice-box...

So we played for a couple of hours and at some point my brother made it to the "crown of command" (with myself stuck somewhere in the middle region) - after over a dozen of turns and a dozen of attempts my brother did not roll a single 4, 5 or 6 with his die, and therefore he didn't deal me a single wound and in the meantime my character had entered the inner region...

Then it took us another couple of turns to notice that the die that my brother was using was not a regular 6-sided one - moreover it was a 6-sided die that had only 1, 2 and 3 on it (each two times), and we did not notice that he had not rolled a single 4+ within the last 3 hours...

Since then we always have a very close look at the dice before we a start a game.

I think I will never forget this one!

Thread: Re: An Old Favourite Revisited

The Mystic Brew cards were cards depicting different ales, like Dragon's Draught or Goblin Breath, that sort of thing. The art work was actually quite good.

It had a page of rules with it stating that instead of occupying yourself at the tavern as per normal, you could pay to Gold and drink a brew. You drew a card, out of a stack of at least 25, and had to immediately do what it said.

Effects ranged from teleportation , to strength gains, to various encounters but I really don't know too much other than that.

This game was buried under a stack of games and when we opened it up, almost every Talisman board was in there. I know he had the Timescape and we didn't use it. It wouldn't surprise me if he had the Dragon expansion included. There was an awful lot of dragons!

I think the owner of the game got the cards of an Internet site but I have no idea where. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Interesting. Sounds like you even had Talisman Dragons (!)

But what is this?
amberaleman wrote:
a Mystic Brew set of cards for the tavern

You also said "City of Adventure" (which is an expansion to Talisman 3e) and not Talisman City. Maybe the mystic brew something is from Talisman 3e?

Thread: An Old Favourite Revisited

Our monthly gaming adventure began with a dusty old treasure, Talisman. Bill and I dug this out from under a stack of his games, hence the dust was literal. If I had allergies it could have been fatal. Luckily no one died.

We saved that for the game.

Cindy, Laurie, Arwen and Ryan joined us after a quick set up of the main game, the City of Adventure, a Mystic Brew set of cards for the tavern and the Dungeon. Each of us drew 3 characters at random and, from them, chose who we would play.

Ryan, forgoing his police training, was the Assassin. Arwen, trying an Irish accent and failing horribly, took the Leprechaun. Bill, though he is a dragon lover at heart, chose to be the Dragon Slayer.Laurie went for the cute little halfing. Cindy, my wife, stayed totally true to life, becoming the Chaos Dwarf. I, of course, chose to be the Minstrel, trying to sing "Minstrel in the Gallery" as we played.

We were off and running. Well, some of us were running. Well, okay, I was running. Dragons seemed to be everywhere. Everywhere but where the Dragon Slayer was, that is. He was in the city quickly becoming a toad.

The Assassin was busy chasing the Minstrel, heedless of the hazards. The Leprechaun, after she survived her ordeal in the forest, came bleeding into the outer region. The Halfling stumbled immediately into the Dungeon door and spent much of her time moving back and forth in the musty dark. The Chaos Dwarf was exactly that, in total chaos, traveling the outer region, finding caves, encountering hermits and, oh yeah, finding dragons.

Once the Assassin realized the folly of trying to catch the nimble Minstrel (or was it the singing that drove him away?) he concentrated on collecting weapons and armour and slyly built his strength. The Leprechaun, trying to visit the Chapel, renamed the hills to the Dragon Hills. Surviving by the luck of the Irish, she found the healing she needed.

The Chaos Dwarf was not Irish, however. Her death was sealed after encountering too many dragons with a penchant for toasted Dwarf. The Halfling staggered out of the Dungeon onto... the Crown of Command! Blinking in the sudden light she reached forward and found, not the Crown, but the Demon Lord. She was thrown back in disarray to become a quick snack for a waiting Gold Dragon.

Meanwhile the Minstrel went on his merry way, finding bags of gold, a fountain of life and even a Talisman. So happy was he, that he decided to try a Mystic Brew. We all know how evil brew can be. Suddenly he found himself stripped of all his wealth in a Dragon Temple, then stripped of his dignity at a sacrificial stone. From then on, he was just a shell of his former happy self. He cruised the regions, searching for cheap thrills.

Dragon Toad, I mean Dragon Slayer, finally found his stride, taking on all comers. He swept the regions of dragons and once his blood thirst was quenched went for a Brew as well. But finally reality set in. The Demon Lord was crafty and all the strength of the Assassin and the 'Slayer would be for naught.

The Minstrel and the Leprechaun had already conceded the land to the Demon Lord, hunkering down at the tavern to ease the pain. So this group of adventurers decided to leave their Talismans for the dragons and slink away to play another game.

It was fun to play a game not played in a long time, but I remember now why it's not played. A quick diversion this game may be, but it never plays quick. A light hearted trip into a realm of adventure, perhaps, but only after the dust has settled thickly upon the box.

Hi Antonio

Yes, I do have copies of all of the editions featured on my site. Here is a picture from a little while ago that features most of them and a few other related items -

In order to get them all it has taken a lot of years and more money than I like to think about! There are still a couple of items that I am searching for...

Unfortunately, I have not seen a copy of Rectocracy, but I have seen pictures of the fantasy version of it called Necromancer's Isle.

I wish you luck in your quest!

To the OP -

A couple of differences between 1st and 2nd Edition are the wording of the Wand & the Command Spell....

[inlineimg]http://www.talismanisland.com/compare_wand.gif[/inlineimg][inlineimg]http://www.talismanisland.com/compare_command_spell.gif[/inlineimg]

To Antonio -

Yes, the Australian version was printed by a company called Ventura International and featured a folding board rather than a jig-board. The box was also slightly different.

If you check out http://www.talismanisland.com/worldtour.htm you can see examples from the different printings of the game.

There are some other "interesting" differences between the various editions.
Hi folks! Some News about 1ed. and 2ed. mapboards! I have contacted from a famous onlike marketplace an Australian Seller with an interesting auction about Talisman 2ed. core game and picture of the game was clearly showing an old 1ed. mapboard! After a short corrispondence I could know that in Australia he could remember only Talisman 2ed. copies with old foldable 1ed. mapboard! So not only early Talisman 2ed. copies were with old 1ed. map but also there were differences in English editions by country? Please, let me know if anyone can confirme my consideration!
Greetings from Italy! Antonio!

Thread: Blast from the Past

When I was in high school, back in the 80s, a friend invited me and several others to play a new board game he had just bought. That game was Talisman. We instantly fell in love with the game. Over the next couple of years – hyped up on Mountain Dew, pizza and M&Ms – we would spend hours playing it.

With those memories in mind, I recently set out to find a copy of the game. Now that I have matured (somewhat), and have a better sense of what I like in a game, and what (to me) makes a good game, I wanted to find out if I would still enjoy Talisman. I found that there was a new edition of the game, so I looked it over. In the end, I decided that I would rather have the edition that I knew and loved, and so I set about trying to find a copy. To my surprise, copies of the 2nd edition of the game were going for $70-80 on eBay. Undeterred, I found a couple of auctions and put in some bids. With patience, fortune finally favored me, and I was able to obtain a copy at a decent price. It arrived on Friday.

Our first session was played on Saturday night. I asked for volunteers, and two of my daughters immediately agreed to play. Jessica was thrilled when she drew the Ghoul as her character (“Alright! I get to start in the Graveyard!”) – I wasn’t sure if I should be concerned about her reaction – Vicki drew the Wizard, and I got stuck with the Minstrel. After a quick glossing over of the rules, we started to play.

About three turns in, one of my other daughters noticed we were playing (I don’t know where she was when the initial invitation went out, but she seemed to think we were excluding her on purpose). Since we hadn’t really gotten things off the ground yet, we decided to let her join in. As she was about to draw a character, my youngest girl – who had a friend spending the night – said that they had changed their minds about playing. So, we ended up with six players. Lindsey ended up with the Priest, Talea had the Monk and Charissa (much to her disappointment) got the Troll. Once again, I explained the rules as briefly as possible, and we were off once more.

Talea and Lindsey barely lasted through the first turn. I’m not sure what it was that turned them off about the game, but before her second turn came around, Talea announced very loudly, “This game is boring! I’m not playing it!” and got up from the table. Lindsey followed right behind. Charissa lasted a little bit longer. However, she suffers from ADD and had a difficult time staying in her seat. Between her turns she would get up from the table and leave the room to do who-knows-what. This delayed the game quite a bit, because we were constantly calling her back to take her turn. Eventually, she decided that she’d rather watch T.V. in the other room with her mom. This left us with our original three players.

I must say that playing Talisman with two teenage girls was a much different experience than when I had played it in the past with my friends. I don’t recall their being so much giggling. Words like “Sweeeeeeet!” were never shouted when we drew Spell cards or killed Hobgoblins. But the Mountain Dew did flow, and the M&Ms were plentiful, so there was at least that little bit of nostalgia to the session.

There were a few things about the game that I had forgotten about (or, at the time, they just didn’t occur to me that they were problematic). I remembered that the game takes a long time to play, but I had forgotten that this is simply because you use a die roll to determine movement. There is way too much randomness in the game, and it’s hard to formulate a decent strategy when you can’t get to where you need to be on the board. The time between turns can get tiresome as well, as evidenced by the three girls that decided they’d rather be doing something else. Finally, this is an elimination game, and if your character is killed off you’re left with nothing to do but twiddle your thumbs and wait for the remaining players to get killed off so you’ll have someone to talk to.

In the end (three hours later), the Wizard (played by Vicki) reached the Crown of Command first, and began casting Command Spells at us. The Ghoul (played by Jessica) was hot on her heels, however, and got to the Crown before the final life was taken from her. She managed to kill off the Wizard, and then set her sites on my poor Minstrel, who was still stuck in the Outer Region. Unable to defend myself, I quickly succumbed and the Ghoul won the game.

All-in-all, it was an interesting experience. I’ve had to revise my rating of the game down from an 8 to a 7. I’ll still play it whenever there’s an opportunity, but I’m glad I didn’t spend $80 on it.

Thread: possible to get scans of cards to replace lost ones?

I am not sure if this is allowed to discuss and I can see how ppl might think I want to print a complete set of cards rather than buying one on ebay, but I thought I just ask and if someone trust that I am for real maybe someone can help me out? =)

I have bought and sold several sets of Talisman recently. Basically buying a set with an expansion I want and therefore ending up with several base units.

I have one really incomplete game now (because I have taken cards from it to make the other sets complete) and off course I wont print cards for it and then sell it as complete on ebay, but I thought I could make it somewhat more playable and then give it to a friend or sth...

So, anyone know where I can find decent scans of the cards for the 2nd edition basic set?
I have all the cards in one set, but I just don't have access to a scanner only a digital camera... :/

Use the TALISMAN CARD CREATOR to change your your 4th ed. cards into 2nd edition:
http://www.randomdice.com/games/talisman/tcs/'

This way, you will also be able to make many of the fun unofficial variants available from http://www.talismanisland.com !

Thread: Talisman 2nd edition expansion is 4th ed?

Now that Black Industries has stopped doing games and there won’t be any official expansions for 4th edition I was wondering about adapting 2nd editions expansions into 4th. Moving the characters seems easy and most of the expansion with special boards such as Dungeons can be tacked right on but adventure cards are a bit of a challenge.

2nd and 4th editions use different size cards and if I put them in normal sized card sleeves they become too big for the board. Anyone know of a way to combined new and old adventure cards? Or failing that are 2nd edition cards compatible with the 4th edition board?

Anyone have any brilliant ideas?
Thread: Re: difference between 1st and 2nd version?

I had forgot I even made this thread.. =)

Thanks for the replies! I took a quick look on the boards and when I couldn't find any differances between the two I switched. I haven't yet played with the new combination, but I am not that hardcore Talisman player anyway so I still shouldn't notice the changes I guess.. =)

Thread: Re: draw adventure card question:

Yes, as long as there isn't anything else on the space (either already there, or drawn at the same time as the Place) with a lower card number that could stop them (such as an Event that makes them miss their turn, a Stranger that teleports them away, or an Enemy that defeats them).
