Yup, maps 1 through 4 are from the first edition base game. Maps 13 through 16 are included with the second edition base game. If you (or anyone else) wants maps 1 though 4, they are available directly from Columbia Games.

http://www.columbiagames.com/cgi-bin/query/cfg/allwizardking...

If you have first edition, you can of course purchase the second edition box set to get maps 13-16 and a bunch more (compatible) blocks. The maps are not listed separately on the CG webpage, but you might try contacting them, since they sell individual parts to other games separately. For the price, it's probably worth getting the whole set, though.

Maps 13-16 are the 4 maps that come with Wizard Kings 2nd Edition.

To my knowledge, they aren't available in a seperate map pack as maps 1-12 are.

Thread: Map 16?

The Scenario book downloadable from Columbia Games own website starts with a scenario which uses Maps 13-16. There are others using Map 16. And yet Columbia Games - and anywhere else I've seen listing maps, such as here - only lists them up to number 12...

What - and where - is map 16? And 13, 14 & 15, for that matter...

Thread: Should I get all of them?

Just my thoughts on what the extra maps provide. Since there wasn’t a review on them, I decided to give you my 2 cents on how good they are and what armies are best for them.

For reference, click on this link to see each of the maps http://www.columbiagames.com/cgi-bin/query/cfg/allwizardking...

Map 5
Finally a map with a decent amount of desert. Granted Map 3 does have a nice desert, but Map 5 has an even larger central desert surrounded by large mountain ranges. Plus there are 2 full mountain hexes, which are rare when compared to forests. Great for desert-loving creatures like Wildryn (Barbarians) and Viksyn (Amazon). They are also great for Jurak (Orcs) and Khurdak (Dwarves) since most of the units are mountain folk letting them cross a mountain for a surprise attack or a nice retreat. Very nice “defensive” map in general if playing with any of the above races.

Map 6
Interesting waterways with shoals that limit movement for water units. Like any other map with lots of water, you will need to rely on control of ports to play effectively in this map through the use of sea transport (or have lots of aquatics/flyers). Very interesting and tense battles can unfold between Coria and Chelva since they are right next to each other, only separated by water. Like many other maps, lots of forest patches great for armies like elves and Ferkin (Warboars).

Map 7
Nothing super special about this map. Nice balance of water, forest, march, and even a full mountain hex. The center island (Draconia) with its cool volcano, with good imagination, can lead to interesting scenarios. If you are thinking of buying separate maps, you could skip this one.

Map 8
Interesting fights if the armies are on either land mass. You would start off sending flyers and aquatics across, and as soon as you control a port on the other side, rush in your regulars with sea transport. I like the fact that the 3 gold city is on a tiny island. More forests good for elves and Ferkin, and some mountains for your mountain folk.

Map 9
If you are thinking about getting only some of the expansion maps, I would recommend maps 9-12 because of the “special” cities (which give cool bonuses/penalties) and because of the central continent you can create by putting all 4 maps together. This forms the largest continuous land mass in the game. In general I felt that the game has too much water, but these 4 maps together provide extra land great for regular ground battles.
Map 9 has the “special” submerged city of Neptunis (very original name). Excellent home base for aquatics who control it with the extra that it’s a 2 gold city. Only flyers and other aquatics can attack your submerged city. No 3 gold city which means that the focus will be on figuring out how to take the submerged city. Otherwise, it’s got more forests, a close henge for wizards, a small desert, and a small insignificant mountain range.

Map 10
Ahhh…the walled city of Neya (worth 3 points!). Of course the center of attention for this map. Still I have a small gripe about it. If the game used “defense” as a variable used in combat, it would make sense that this city would provide a defense bonus. Well, as we know, WK only uses a combat (ie attack) value when deciding whether we make a hit or not. So this city instead provides an “attack bonus” of +1 (defending units in this city have a higher chance of making a hit). Although not intuitive IMHO, it still works great. Also the map includes your fair share of mountains, forest, and even a full marsh hex (great for Mortod).

Map 11
Another map great for mountain and desert folk, and not as great for forest folk which seem to have the advantage in general in most other maps. The underground city of Khax provides two modifiers: -1 to combat to flyers (makes sense), and mountain folk have +1 to combat (also makes sense). Plus it’s worth 2 gold. No 3 gold city on this map putting the attention on Khax and Faxton (worth 2 too….clever). Of the two, Faxton is more accessible and thus draws some attention away from the more special and harder to take Khax. The henge on this map is far away enough from where the main action usually unfolds (closer to Khax), great for healing your wizards in peace.

Map12
Not much going on in map 12. No special city here. Still it does have a large forest and the largest marshland, great for a scenario involving marh and forestfolk (ie elves vs undead). Unlike many of the other 3 gold cities in other maps, Karakhan is easily accessible from many angles drawing many many interesting battles to its walls: it has 4 clear hexsides and 4 roads leading to it….making it too accessible, very challenging to defend.

Maps in general
I would strongly recommend getting all of these maps if you really enjoyed the original WK game and want to bring more life into the game. For unmounted thin cardboard maps, $4.99 may be a bit too much. If money is not an issue and you really enjoyed the game, I recommend to get them all for endless replayability.

-Maps 5-8 add very little to the game except for different land and water layouts as described above. With good imagination and good scenarios they can be used very effectively. You can skip these if money is an issue.

-Maps 9-12 are my favorites for the reasons stated above: interesting special cities, large continent, and more variety in terms of land and water layouts.
Thread: Official Map Kit Available

The Columbia Games crew has been kind enough to make a map kit available for constructing your own Wizard Kings maps using the same graphics for a consistant look. The kit is available in extended PostScript (EPS) format for use with Adobe Illustrator or other vector art programs. A GIF version is also available for cutting and pasting in non-vector graphics programs, but will not produce nearly as nice results. If any one has some really good homegrown maps (preferably with interesting scenarios), I'd love to see them posted. If I come up with anything our group finds worthy, I'll do the same. Enjoy!

http://www.columbiagames.com/resources/8500/mapkit/mapkit.sh...
