...funny...I just read the review and my brain automatically skimmed over that word as "public" because of the context--in fact, I had to read the other posts twice to notice the difference. I wonder why my brain filtered it out and yours didn't, CUTHALION?

Thread: Zelda, without having to blow air inside the control deck.

During the early 80's there was quite a run on board games based off of arcade games. I've heard the theory that this was an attempt by the board game market to get some money by luring the kids away from the dim arcade and back to the gaming table. If this were the case, it didn't work, and board games of Pac-Man, Zaxxon, Pole Position, Centipede, and even Defender were on rummage sale tables within years.

Nearly ten years later, and the videogame movement was back, mostly thanks to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and its leigon of 8-bit games. Lo and behold, there were a few more video to board game attempts in this era, although they were driven more by a sense of marketing than by anything else. If you didn't know, in these years the people down at Nintendo knew that their most popular games were so popular that they crossed over from video gaming itself into the pubic mindset. So why not use their games to sell cartoons, comic books, candy, and cereal?

And since The Legend of Zelda, perhaps the NES's greatest game, was only available at home, perhaps it would be eaiser to get a fat kid to put the controller down to drag this out the closet. They were wrong, just like those poor Milton Bradley dreamers were back in the 80's, but playing this one today makes me just as nostalgic for the era of 8-bit gaming as those Pac-Man board games make me long for years where I was barely getting into solid food.

Objective: Guide Link, the brave elfy hero the Zelda games, through six seperate worlds, eventually reaching the dark final chamber where the player who has the most points (heart tokens and items) after someone finds Princess Zelda, wins.

Game Play: There's only one Pawn for Link. All the players share movement. Each world on the board is a small area which Link can't be moved out of until a player finds the secret item stashed within it. Players move Link through each world, stopping when landing on a yellow space. Once this happens, the moving player draws from a stack of tiles for each level. While the special item is in the stack, the rest of the tiles are monsters of various strengths. If a monster is drawn, ALL PLAYERS must roll a certian number of attack dice, the number of which is determined by the power of the monster, and the number of people playing. If the monster is defeated, players (at least the one who rolled two hits on bots attack dice in the two player version) gain a heart token. If you fail, players lose a heart token. These attack rules, as i said, follow different rules depending on the number of people playing. Once a player draws each world's secret item, all players are now allowed to move into the next level, where the monster stack is even bigger and even more dangerous. This continues until the last chamber, where players fight the evil Gannon. Mixed in with his stack is the Zelda tile, which when found, must be rolled for to keep it. If kept, the game ends and everyone tallies up their points (with the Zelda token itself counting as four points).

The Legend of Zelda game won't have a lot of fans in the world of hard core gaming. It's mostly luck driven, although there is a slight challenge factor on deciding whether or not to stay within a world to pick a fight with monsters for points, even though the doorway to the next world is open.

But frankly, I loved finding games like this when I was younger, and part of me still enjoys them today. If you too yearn for those days of that teeth rotting joy of NES cereal and endless sheets of Metroid and Super Mario stickers covering your locker, this game would make a nice little addition to your day.
