Thread: Opening turns of Hube's Pocket: Kirovograd

Hubes Pocket: The Fall of Kirovograd

Turn 1 January 5-7, 1944

The Soviet commander used the initiative and launched a major attack in the southeast against Kirovograd. The southeastern wing was heavily weighted with supply and resources. Unfortunately, the Soviet air forces proved themselves to be rather unreliable and the Shturmoviks made virtually no impact on the Axis troops. Artillery fire was used instead and a great deal of supply had to be expended in support of the offensive. Soviet infantry effected breakthroughs both to the north and south of Kirovograd, subsequently surrounding the city. The German commander of the 3rd Panzer Corps ordered a counterattack with the 13th Panzer Division, but a run of bad luck left the panzers depleted and inflicted little damage on the Soviets. To salvage the situation, the 3rd Panzer Corps and the 47th Corps attempted to pull back toward the west. Meanwhile, the 6th Panzer Division fueled and began a rapid redeployment to the endangered sector. Most of the Axis supply was burned up during the initial Soviet attack. One must wonder how much supply the Soviets had at their other positions?

Turn 2 January 8-11, 1944

The Soviet commander continued to flood through the holes and to cut off the Germans in Kirovograd. The Il-2 aircraft were used again, this time to hit some of the German panzer reserves [11th and 14th Panzers] Both units became DG’ed and were knocked out of reserve status. The Soviets attempted an attack against Kirovograd and inflicted substantial damage, but the German fortress battalion held out.

The Axis commander tried to extricate the units that had been trapped by the Soviet advance. The 11th Panzer remained in a precarious situation near Kirovograd and tried to fight its way out, but this was not as effective as hoped.

Turn 3 January 12-15, 1944

[The Soviet player won the initiative but passed to the Axis. There was a possibility to do some damage to the 11th Panzer but it seemed more useful to try to set up a double-turn] The Axis commander attempted to re-deploy the 3rd and 47th Panzer around the Novo-Ukrainia. Most of the 11th Panzer was pulled back and out of harm’s way. The 52nd Corps HQ arrived at Pervomaysk, where it set up shop. The 3rd Panzer Corps built an airbase at Uman. The infantry at Nov-Ukraine built a hedgehog.

Soviet forces continued to move toward the west. Meanwhile Kirovograd fell to a determined infantry attack. At this point, the Soviet forces have control of Kiev [8VP], Belaya-Tserkov [3VP], Berdichev [1VP], and Kirovograd [2 VP]. [This totals 14 VP.]

Turn 4 January 16-18, 1944

[The Soviet commander passed the initiative again.] The Axis commander salvaged as much of the position in the south east as possible. The supply situation was abysmal. The Soviet’s continued with mop up operations around Kirovograd and began an attack near Smela from the south rail line. The German 57th Infantry Division was destroyed as well as the 110th PG regiment.

Turn 5 January 19-21, 1944

The weather was cool and cloudy and this meant rather limited aircraft activity. [Airbase-to-airbase only] The Axis commander used initiative to improve his defensive position. The Soviet commander advanced the line in the south and continued to attempt an encirclement of Smela and the hedgehogs along the Dneper. Overall it was uneventful.
