Thread: A constant on our gaming shelf

This is my first review so bear with me...

A little background

I am a 20 year old who has been playing board games consistently for the past few years. Recently, (the last year maybe) I have been getting into more serious board games. Warcraft 3 the computer game had always been a personal favorite of mine so when I saw the board game in the store I had to pick it up. This was quite awhile ago and at that time this was my first board game beyond the old staples like monopoly and scrabble. Since then I've had quite a bit of experience with serious board games particularly Fantasy Flight Games. That's why I decided to wait to write a review. All this being said here we go....

Components

Upon opening the box I was pleasantly suprised with the contents. The modular board pieces are made from the same quality hard cardboard that most FFG boards are made from. This is definatly a plus. Next were all the cards. A tad flimsy compared to cards from other FFG games. The usual Warcraft-esq artwork. Not a huge complaint though. The pieces: now i know having read a few of the other reviews on this game that some people weren't happy with the rather abstract wooden unit pieces. I feel that it's a very refreshing break from plastic minis. Especially with a licensed game like this you'd expect some minis. The wooden unit pieces add a touch of abstract that fits well with the modular board.
All of the tokens provided with the game are made from the same great durability I've come to love and expect with FFG.

Lastly, the rulebook: The rulebook's size was very manageable for me (I come from a background very familiar with Games Workshop rulebooks hint hint...) but for some people who are used to simple board games the size of the rulebook at first appearance may be daunting. However, upon opening of the book one will find everything very well organized with rules at the front and some scenarios in the back.

Gameplay

Warcraft TBG's gameplay flows very quickly and smoothly. On a turn you move and attack, collect resources, deploy more forces and then spend resources. The last step in the turn is the most interesting one because you must decide between several options what to spend your hard earned resources on. The catch is you may only choose one thing to spend your resources on. This makes for some very interesting strategic decisions a player must make. For example, do you train a few more units or do you upgrade your existing units to fight better?
A player must constantly be looking ahead in his/her strategy. The actual combat is very simple, requiring a player to roll equal to or below a target number. However, there are many faction-specific special abilities and the use of the faction cards that can drastically alter combat.

The scenarios included in the rulebook are all very fun and interesting. They all add some kinda cool little special rule and really makes the player adopt an alternate strategy from a regular game.

Summary

In summary, Warcraft TBG offers a very nice light strategy game that with the expansion offers a decent amount of depth. All of my gaming buddies understand this and I've had little to no problem introducing beginners to this game.

The game at a quick glance:

PROS=
-Durable board and tokens
-great artwork
-love the wooden unit tokens (for some this may go in the cons...)
-Easy, well written rulebook
-Interesting and varied scenarios
-Simple combat mechanic but a world of strategy with the cards and abilities
-pretty fast play (we usually finish a 2 player game in about an hour)
-Easy to introduce to a beginner

CONS=
-not very impressed with the cards. could have been sturdier
-waaaay more options and strategy when you add the expansion (pretty much necessary purchase if you plan on playing the game frequently)
-alot of cool rule options that you need the expansion to experience

Well that's my review. Thanks for reading and please send me some feedback. I look forward to doing some more reviews!!

Happy gaming

~Tzeentch Fire '08~

What are you basing this interpretation on?
I have doubts about Fantas's interpretation also. It is probably called a hit on the Curse card because it is not a casualty yet (you can prevent it).

Thread: Re: Likes & Dislikes

I've played this only a few times and would have to say that spells were the first problem and frustration was the second problem.

We didn't have but one reference sheet (the back cover) so it was hard to anticipate what the other player might throw against you. Certainly "speed" spell has upset all planning on the map, along with "Town Portal" though these were for everyone.

Before this, I'd played Age of Mythology: The Boardgame which didn't have a map to fight on, and the battle tactics were mind-boggling. So, I enjoyed the map-creating hexagons here.

I played 4-player for the first time last weekend, and the ability to share resources was a relief to prevent two from shutting down one.

As to frustration, so many things I wanted to do were not possible.
(1) I wanted to build a defensive structure like a tower, but the outpost has no defensive capability.
(2) If I recall correctly, in one game we had difficulty with resources because the two sources nearest a town were cleared early on, spoiling the game.
(3) There doesn't seem to be much advantage to getting all 8 workers on the map quickly,
(4) And you can't build another worker-generating building to speed it up.
(5) You can only build a limited number of type: 4 flyers, 7 ranged, 8 workers, 10 melee. In similar computer games like Age of Empires, you have a population limit and can build whatever you want. An alternative would be to say you can have X number of flyers, ranged, melee and workers either on the map or in production.

I'll have to think about the comment that the Elves advantage in ranged units dominates since they remove casualties first. In my last game the Orcs had fully upgraded their melee, and had 9 units in 3 mutually supporting hexes, but were beaten by 11 or 12 allied units, mostly elves. I thought it was numbers and dice, since they only scored a double-hit from their melee once.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I noticed something weird: since the player who goes first each turns changes, this can make for some odd go-twice movements.

my opponent upgraded his unit all the way, so it has an Area Attack ability.

let's say he throws 4 dice and scores two 1's and the other two dice miss. that means he inflicted 4 casualties.

i then throw a Curse experience card. it says that for every hit he scored i roll a die and prevent one casualty for each 3 or less i roll.

do i roll 4 dice or just 2?

tnx!!

let's say 2 melee units are attacked by 2 flying units. or that these units are the only left standing during a battle. what happens?

i read the rules and it says that melee units can't harm the flying units (at least not without cards). so, according to the rules, the melee units are dead, since they can't fight back.

thank you!!!

My fiance and I played this last night and I rolled over her. I was Human and she was Orc. I think honestly that she wasn't aggressive enough. But I'm wondering if there is any good strategic advice out there that could help her be more successful. I really like this game and I can't wait to play it again, so I'm hoping I can give her some help to make her competitive.

Thread: Three players... an imbalance of troops.

When you only have three players, there are better games to play than Warcraft: the Boardgame. However, we'd played a lot of them recently and it had been a very long time since I last played Warcraft, so, why not?

Rich hadn't played before, I'd played once before, and Randy owned the game and could be presumed to have played more than once before.

The only 3-player scenario in the box is not the most fulfilling one - it ignores the depletion rules to give everyone a balanced and fair starting position with resources that never run out. Then you need to rush to the centre, destroy the neutral troops, whilst maintaining enough of your troops to hold the other players off.

You can see a lot of the groundwork that later made the excellent Starcraft boardgame in Warcraft... not surprisingly. However, it's much less refined and not as satisfying. One thing that both games have in common is the necessity of managing your growth properly. Randy did this excellently, I did mine averagely, and Rich managed his poorly. Yes, you need to play this game a few times before you get the hang of it.

Randy built many archers, I built many fliers, and Rich had a lot of ground troops. As a result, Rich was really lagging behind the rest of them. Ground troops suck in Warcraft - they're there basically to absorb losses.

My problem is that I really stumbled in the midgame and failed to properly expand when I needed to. Randy was building outposts, I was discovering I needed to build outposts so (a) I was closer to the action and (b) I could build more troops.

Eventually, Rich built some fliers, and we converged on the middle. After the mass of battles against the neutral elves and each other, we discovered that...

...Rich didn't have any troops left at all
...I had a few troops left, but they were too far away and out of position
...and Randy dominated the centre victory point decisively.

So, a solid win to Randy. It's probably worth playing the game again with four players, but I don't know when that will be - there are better four-player games.

Thread: Re: Multiplayer seat order and Free For All questions?

What is the seating order for 4 player team games? Does it matter?
You probably mean playing order. Mostly it doesn't matter but the "default" initial order is A1 B1 A2 B2 (A and B are teams, 1 and 2 are players) shifting clockwise after each turn (i.e. B1 A2 B2 A1 in the second turn etc.). If a different initial order is required it should be stated so in scenario rules.

Can you play 4 player FFA?
Of course. But if you want to use the main game scenario you should reduce the number of victory points needed.

In Free For all, do you choose who you want to take casualties?
I'm not sure what you mean. You should know that you can only fight one enemy at a time. If after you have moved all of your units multiple battlefields ensue you (as the attacking player) choose the order in which battles take place.

Well, there is a possibility for more than two players'/teams' units to share one space after using Town Portal. This case isn't properly covered in the rules. It is not clear whether all battles (including those not containing any of the current player's units) need to be resolved before the end of the current player's move step or if they can be resolved during one of the other players' move step. But the rule that you fight only one enemy at a time remains and other enemies cannot intervene.

What about team games, does the recieving team pick?
Yes. Team players decide how casualties are divided among their units.
Thread: Got it yesterday - Son and I couldn't wait

Bought Warcraft yesterday afternoon before working the night shift and promised my son I would read the rules and we would play in the morning.

Game is very easy to learn and quick to play, we got in 1 and 1/2 games in just over two hours.

First game I took Human and Geoff took Orcs, we set up for the standard two player game in the rules and were off. Only hiccup at first was trying to figure out when we actually get to draw new cards, finally figured out you draw a new one once you play one. Now things were moving, I built a few units on my first turn and quickly moved out to center board for the 2 point towns on my quest for 15 victory points. Geoff on the other hand started slower and built units and peons to consolidate his base, gathering more resources and building up his town. Both strategies seemed to be working pretty well, when we realized we were really goofing up the spend phase of our turns. We both had not been choosing only one action, (build units, build buildings, or upgrade units)at a time, we had been doing everything, and to make matters worse we were not limiting ourselves to one unit per building for construction, needless to say we ran out of resources and markers really quickly. Once we realized what was going on we called that game a draw and decided to start again.

Second game, lessons learned, and I still chose Human(Alliance) Geoff changed races and started with the Undead Scourge. Once again we started, me quickly moving out to capture victory point towns and Geoff working on upgrading his town and units. I got an outpost built near the center of the map and we both quickly realized what a strategic asset it was. Now I could deploy units on the front lines while he had to build them back in town and march all the way to the front. Several quick skirmishes showed that his upgraded units were superior to mine but as I had the numerical superiority I was able to capture all the center towns and with a couple of victory point cards was able to reach 15 for the victory before he could bring his superior units to bear against me. Both of us really enjoyed this session and look forward to a rematch and also look forward to a 4 player game or one of the other scenarios.

Short answer: YES to all of your questions.
The orc player chooses the target, he can choose any unit in the battle (i. e. from the battlefield or any of the flanks) and if the battlefield contains no enemy units after playing this card the Orc player wins the battle (without any attacks).
Note that if nobody wins a battle all devoured units die (this was stated in official FAQ) although the Orc player hasn't won the battle.

Thread: cards questions

Hi.
When playing a card such as the orc's 'devour' at the beginning of a battle, we came to several questions :
- is the target unit for 'devour' chosen by the orc player ?
- can he pick units in any hex of the battle (the battling hex and flanking hexes) or only in the battling hex ?
- what happens if after 'devour' is played only orc units remain in he battling hex ?

our example :
nightelf ground unit enters an orc ground unit's hex. Orc is flanked by two ground units in two hexes, nightelf is flanked by one ground unit and catapult in one hex, and one ground unit in the other.

If the orc player casts devour
=> in the battling hex : the nightelf ground unit is removed until end of combat. Does that mean combat ends with orc victory and nightelf ground unit is removed from play ?
=> in the nightelf flanking hex with only the nightelf flanking ground unit : can he target that single nightelf flanking ground unit ?
=> In the nightelf flanking hex with the catapult and ground unit : can he target the nightelf catapult specifically or does the nightelf player pick which unit is targeted ?

thanks in advance

Thread: Re: Ensnare, web & slow poison and other rules

Ensnare and Web - at the beginning of a round (before ranged phase)

Moon Glaive - strength 2

Town Portal - works only on units, not workers
There's a difference depending on what set of cards you play with:
- old cards (from the basic game): you can move your units to YOUR town/outpost
- new cards (from the expansion set): you can move your units to a FRIENDLY town/outpost

Slow Poison example (somewhat complex)
- Night Elf player has three flying units, one ranged unit (level 4 with Slow Poison) and one melee unit. Undead player has two flying units and two melee units.
- In the ranged phase Slow Poison is of no help because the Undead player has no ranged units. You just play normally. Let's suppose there were no casualties during this phase.
- In the flying phase the Night Elf player must roll dice first. Let's suppose (s)he inflicts one normal and two Slow Poison casualties. /cards/ Now the Undead player has to remove two units from the battle. (S)he removes one flying and one melee unit. Then (s)he rolls her/his dice - only once because only one of her/his flying units remains. (S)he inflicts one casualty. Now both players have to remove normal casualties - one casualty on each side. Both players remove one flying unit.
- After the flying phase the Night Elf player has two flying units, one ranged unit and one melee unit. The Undead player has one melee unit. Because the ranged unit of the Night Elf player is still in game (s)he rolls dice first. (S)he inflicts one Slow Poison casualty so the Undead player must remove his last unit and can't roll dice.

/cards/
After the Night Elf player has rolled his attacks the Undead player could use Curse card (if (s)he has one) to prevent some casualties. (S)he would roll three times. If (s)he prevented two casualties, only one Slow Poison and no normal casualties would remain. After that, however, the Night Elf player could use Moon Glaive card to cause some extra casualties. (S)he too would roll three times. If (s)he caused two extra casualties there would be one normal and two Slow Poison casualties again (as if no cards were used).

I hope you understood at least some of it.
Hi there, I've bought the basic game recently and I'm planning to buy the expansion too. I've found the revised rules for all the rules in the forums in boardgamegeek, the ffg forum and in the yahoo warcraft forum. My question is this: what are the final (as of now) rules? When can ensnare and web cards be played? In the beginning of the round or in the beginning of the melee phase? Also, what's the final form of moon glaive? Unit's strength or strenght 2? Finally (I hope), does the town portal spell works for the workers too?

ps1. Can someone give me an example of the slow poison ability in combat? thank you in advance
