Sounds like we should keep in touch then. I am hoping to play in Wellington and Napoleonic Wars, so I will have to see how the schedule plays out. I will check with VuduJoie because he should be in attendance as well.

I was looking forward to it, especially after the PBeM tournament was aborted due to a lack of commitment from the GM.

We have some SoR players coming down for WBC this year - we might be able to get a game in if our schedules jive. As it looks right now, my best opportunities for Open Gaming will be Friday evening (and possibly afternoon) as well as Saturday morning.

Thread: Abbreviated Italian Conquest Action

VuduJoie had placed Sword of Rome on the table at Bobby Tweak's game night one time before I sat down to play it. Chuck, Gaming Jason, Wargaming Jason, VuduJoie, and I sat down for the second game. Chuck had Guals, Gaming Jason had Greeks, Wargaming Jason had the Romans, VuduJoie took the Etruscan/Samnites, and I got Carthage in our five-player game. In all we would only play two complete turns, but the game was an exciting one.

Since it was the first game for three of us, there was a lot of rule explaining. If I had picked up on the red cities being the ones we wanted to capture for victory points, I would not have attacked VuduJoie on the east coast of Italy and marched into one of his tribe cities. Although we had one-to-one odds, Carthage had a decisive victory, which established my forces on the continent. Gaul rained down from the north and managed to get a little looting done, but the dice were not with Chuck. Plus, VuduJoie sent the trans-Alpine Gauls to wreak havoc with Chuck's gains.

The Etruscans and the Romans tangled mostly, although neither was able to get a strong footing (apart from the strong footing that Rome always has). For Greece, the attraction of taking on Carthage proved too great, but with a three CP card, the Greeks were sent back to their home port, a few troops lighter for the trip when they failed their naval battle roll (at minus two).

I had not been aware that my landing on VuduJoie's tribe would prevent the Samnites from producing a troop, so as Greece and Rome began to play on the east coast as well, there were fewer Samnite forces on the board.

I tried landing on the west coast to take an open port, only to be smited by the Etruscan defenders who swooped in the next play. Gaming Jason and I called a truce to focus on taking care of our northern foes, which opened me up to try to reinforce my position on the east coast. Looking at the clock (we were coming up on midnight) I knew there would not be a third turn in the game (it was a school night, after all). I decided to focus on getting victory points.

My attempt at an Etruscan port was smited, as was my attempt on an open Rome spot, but my eastern force was able to move north and secure a Gaul settlement. Greece picked up a Roman village and at the end of two turns, we ended with a Greece/Carthage tie. Unfortunately, I did not have many troops left, and if we had moved on to a turn three, I would be licking my wounds.

I believe all agreed that the best situation for this game is a Saturday afternoon. I will look forward to playing an open gaming session of it at the World Boardgaming Championships if someone gets it on the table.
