I like this version better than previous versions. Rules are streamlined. Better intro to minis for kids.

It is basically a revised version of the skirmish rules to match with D&D 4th edition. Its pretty fun, though in a small state of fluxx. They are going to be releasing a new starter in March with more solidified and accessible rules. You can get into it now but will probably have to wade through some erratta to do so.

What's this 2.0 version? I looked at the boxes with interest but never bought as there were so many sets already released I didn't want to get into a collectible market that late.

Thread: something you'll come back for once in a while...

I bought the starter pack and several boosters 2-3 years ago. I used the miniatures mainly for my DnD weekends and of course gave the skirmish a try.
I never played on a regular basis but recently I tried it out with my gf and it was great! (except that she hates to lose )
Maybe I was just lucky but 1 starter and 5 booster packs were enough to play reasonable games with a good choice of creatures. We just split the war bands in good vs. evil (although it hurts an old DM like me to see devils fighting alongside demons LE/CE) so its about 60/40% of creatures in favor of the evil aligned side.
What especially lured me into buying the game in the first place was something other reviewers here seem to critizise alot: the prepainted miniatures!
I played Warhammer in my youth and usually just only gave the armies a black base coat - I just wanted to play not paint till my neck hurts!
Additionally the material is super durable and resistant, so they're easy to store and you needn't put on your silk gloves while playing

Conclusio:
A decent knowledge of DnD is not a must but it makes things easier of course (synergy in your warband, knowledge of the special abilities) The games are short and fast paced, there are a bunch of nice house rules you should take a look at if you like to change/enhance your gameplay and with some other board tiles you can easily make up your own missions (w new objectives)

Recently WotC released a 2.0 version of miniatures following the new D&D 4th ed. If these rule overhaul is any good I can’t say by now but I already ordered the new Dungeons of Dread starter pack including the new rulebook (I know it’s available online but I also wanted the minis) I dare say that the 4th edition might drive some more players to buy the miniatures because the rpg battles more than ever cry for a battle site on the table (arranging battles on a board with miniatures was never a negative point for me, it made things easier and more interesting) but the target audience may also change a little bit to „younger“ players. Thats usually only a problem if the rules are simplified too much and turning the game into pure dice-rolling. My hopes are, though that the simplification just tightens the gameplay not the player base ^^

Result:
replayability: excellent
duration: short and action packed
cost factor: depends on your geeklevel ^^ but i'd say reasonable
storage factor: very good, folded gamemaps (the quality is not that great) and very durable miniatures

I really enjoyed the shortwhiled and interesting games i had, whenever putting this game on the table.
Thread: Re: Faction colored bars, significance of location?

I get it. Guys on the WoC forum straightened me out. I've only got a few 2.0 cards at this point and didn't realize that there is an invisible, designated line for each faction bar. With the proliferation of iconic card games these days I thought it might be something clever and cryptic. Red, blue, purple, green, top to bottom.

robbage
Thanks for the tips... I am thinking of the larger sized one, the other seems like it might be to small to get a good gaming going on.

I will admit though, I let loose a chuckle when I read your line "And establish some fairly serious ground-rules about markers....." that must have sucked... I'll have to establish a marker ground-rule. I do have one in place for drinks.

D.

Thread: Re: Grid Map Recommendation

Chessex Megamats are fairly standard amongst groups. I lost one to a accidental permanent-marker incident years ago, and replaced it, and then wore that one out. Two years ago I replaced it with a mondomat -- the 4'x8' version, with hexes on the opposite side, and it always wows people.

Special Note: Red markers tend to stain a wee bit -- so stick with blue, green, and black, and use red only for highlights (if at all).

And establish some fairly serious ground-rules about markers. You don't want an accident where somebody brings their own, and then finds out they grabbed the wrong one. Trust me on this.

Thanks Eric,

Actually I guess it really doesn't matter... Dry Erase or Wet Erase would work, right? Thanks for your suggestions, I'm going to check out chessex and see what I can come up with... The whiteboard sounds like it would work with a little effort, but I'd need to be able to roll it up when no in use.

Thanks!
D.

You're pretty specific about the dry-erase, but just for completeness have you heard of the vinyl mats you can use wet-erase markers on?

http://chessex.com/mats/Battlemats_&_Megamats.htm

There used to be Tact-Tiles that were dry erase, but production stopped on them.

Here's a how-to that someone wrote that uses laminated foam core- http://gmfoundation.wordpress.com/2007/07/25/how-to-make-you...

I've heard of people finding puzzle piece dry erase boards and scoring them. There's also bath/shower board. I've used it for a whiteboard and it's $10 for a 4'x8' sheet. I haven't tried scoring it yet though. The trouble with whiteboard is that nothing marks it permanently.

Good luck.

I was hoping to get a large grid map (like maybe 2' x 3' or 3' x 4' or so, with the grids for playing D&D minis on, but I wanted one that was made of a material you can use those dry erase markers on, like a plan grid map that you could put your guys on and draw the rooms/halls/etc with a dry erase marker, like to reveal rooms as you go type of thing.

If anyone can help me out that would be great.

D.

Regarding the new 2.0 figs and cards, the faction orientation is indicated on the card by color and icon. What does the location of this colored bar between the stats on the left side of the card represent? No doubt something quite obivous, but I can't for the life of me find reference to it.

Thanks,
robbage

The Dungeon tiles from Hirst Arts, or in particular, as they come from Castle Kits (http://stores.castlekits.com/Categories.bok?category=COMPLET...), look pretty sweet. They can work for Descent, as they have sets for the base game all the way through the expansions and soon an RtL set as well. And they work well for RPGs, or DDM. I am enjoying the new 2.0 version of the miniature game and eagerly awaiting a shipment of the Castle Kit tiles.

I'm not sure but I think they are more affordable than Dungeon Forge.

robbage

Thread: Returning to DDM

I recently bought my first D&D miniatures in about 18 months - a case of the latest huge set, "Against the Giants". Desiring to actually play the game again, I built three warbands and took them to our latest boardgame day.

Randy had never played DDM before, although both Rich and I had, albeit of the previous ruleset. Still, DDM is now very close to D&D 4e in rules and it didn't take us long to get the hang of it.

I'd built three "themed" warbands which rushed to engage each other...

Randy's Giants
Fire Giant Raider
Hobgoblin Guard (x2)
Goblin Runner (x2)
Flamescorched Kobolds (x2)
Galeb Duhr

Rich's Minions of Orcus
Deathpriest of Orcus
Degenerate Cultist of Orcus (x2)
Gnaw Demon (x2)
Orc Zombie (x2)

Merric's Heroes
Captain of the Watch
Skullcleave Warrior
Dwarf Warsword
Eladrin Pyromancer
Dwarf Battlemaster

(The lists aren't 100% accurate, but are close enough)

The game wasn't filled with lots of strategy, but it was useful for familiarizing everyone with the rules. Rich and Randy soon found themselves locked in melee, whilst I wished I had more ranged attackers. A fireball from my pyromancer reduced many of Rich's and Randy's troops to 5 hp apiece... and so they scored the points for killing each other, not me! That needed more thought from me, I admit.

There's no doubt that the key piece was Randy's Fire Giant. I attempted to get my Skullcleave Warrior into a position where he could do a lot of damage and almost succeeded, but he was hit once too often and died before he could whirlwind attack back and slay many a foe. Rich's Deathpriest was also formidable, but he was losing minions that could damage our troops.

Probably the most effective piece aside from the Giant was the Galeb Duhr - low cost, but hard-hitting and almost impossible to slay. Randy had a lot of minions at the start of the game, but they had died by game's end, along with most of Rich's and my forces - only our commanders were left. The Giant (and his Galeb Duhr offsider), my Dwarf Battlemaster, and Rich's Deathpriest. Against the Giant, we fared poorly, and Randy took the game.

Final scores:
Randy 228, Rich 97, Merric 47

If you have a previous version, just drag the worksheet you need onto your old file. Figures with Epic cards are now highlighted in blue.

Note: this is a streamlined sheet for tracking your collection and replaces DandDminisV1.xls.
Thread: Dwarven Forge Map Parts

I read in this forum some people talking about how good (and expensive) this terrain was. Can anyone please confirm if the size works well with the D&D minis? Someone had mentioned that it was too small for the minis, can I hear some opinions from people who have some? How well does it work (or not) with the D&D size minis?

I have made a lot of terrain from the paper cut out people (World Works, or World Wonders?), which I used for Descent and it worked fine, but the paper wears down after time and it gets crushed and stuff in storage on occasion, so I thought I'd check the Dwarven Forge out.

D.

The sets compatible with the current rules are Dungeons of Dread, Against the Giants, Desert of Desolation, Night Below, and Unhallowed. Desert of Desolation, Night Below, and Unhallowed were originally released for the previous version of the rules, so the stat cards included in the package are not compatible with the new edition. However, new stat cards can be downloaded at http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/errata, making these sets fully compatible with the new rules.

One nice thing about downloading the stat cards it that it makes it very easy to proxy models you do not have.

The vast majority of my D&D minis have not been blind booster purchases. There are enough other people buying that way that I can pick up the commons and uncommons dirt cheap. If there is a rare or two that I like, I'll snatch it up.

Can anyone who knows, tell me what sets are currently available at retail, and what the situation is with the stat cards.

The newest set is called "Against the Giants", but some of the earlier sets are still very available. Our local Shopko has several older sets gathering dust. You can see all the sets here:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mix/gallery

I am confused by some of the stuff I am reading, I guess the older sets are not compatible with the newer sets? Specifically what sets are compatible with what? I already read someone say that there were plans to release the old stat cards updated to the new rules, so you would be able to use old minis. Is that a fact or a rumor, and if there is info out there on it, will it literally be a pack of cards you can purchase (like the ones Privateer Press sells for Warmachine for example), or some sort of PDF download?

There is a new ruleset which goes along with the 4th edition release of the Dungeons and Dragons Role-Playing game. The new ruleset requires new cards. The current set and the previous set (Dungeons of Dread) already come with the new style cards. Wizards is working to make new cards for the earlier sets too. They are pdfs, so you will have to print them out yourself. The sets that are done are available here:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/20080410a

Is it worth buying older minis or only the newer ones (not for collectible reasons, but from a game play point of view).

Many of the most beloved figures are from older sets. But if I were you, I would stick with the sets that have already been updated.

And final question - anyone have and duplicates or figures they are willing to sell? I'll be happy to purchase off of someone here and will pay a fair price, otherwise I'll be off to ebay. :P

I've had good luck with dragonjustice.com, miniaturemarket.com, popularcollections.com, and several sellers on ebay.

Before you go buying any on eBay, check out www.trollandtoad.com or www.coolstuffinc.com. Both sites sell the minis at a nice, inexpensive clip, have great customer service, and are overall great to buy from.

I know, at the very least, Troll & Toad also sells "packages" of trolls, elves, elementals, etc.

Keep in mind the stat cards are two sided because one side has the stats for the actually minis game and one side has the stats for a 'normal' D&D campaign. It confused me a bit at first, but then I realized what it was.

I am not new to the gaming world, but I don't have any experience with D&D minis other than a quick game recently played with one of my sons, it was fun and we decided to 'get into' the game... Invariably, you hit a wall with some costing $20 a piece, while a lot cost $3-$10. I've given up on trying to match up the right minis with a module. It ends up costing in the three figures.
.

Yeah, I've tried with Descent to get the right replacement figs for named master monsters.
Thread: Re: Looking to get in casually

Some good advice by others here. A set of 60 figs can have around 12 or so rare figs in it. So you would at least have to by 12 boosters just to have a chance of getting all the figs.

That said, the figs are pretty much to scale with games like Warhammer, so you won't regret having them, like you might with clicky base figs. I've even made up my own rules for DDM and I'm enjoying it.

Just note that in a starter and a booster you might end up with two figs from one faction and another faction with 5 figs and so on, so you might not have balanced forces.

Let me second the eBay recommendation here. I got a ton of DnD minis to build a Warhammer Quest set off eBay last year, and you can get them for cheap. Many times, if you shop around, you can get them for $.20-.50 apiece. A dozen minis for less than the price of a booster. Very, very worth it.

Man, you really got my hopes up for a second there. I love the RPG and have no interest in the minis game. If there was a "Deluxe Keep on the Shadowfell" that was the module packed with all the minis you needed to play it, I would buy that in a heartbeat. If there was a "Kobold Pack" that had like 10 minions, and 2-5 of each of the other kinds of kobolds, I'd buy that with my second heartbeat. I am starting up two DnD groups using labels on foamcore for all the monsters. I desperately want to give WotC my money but they won't let me!
