Thread: This craps

Boy, Trivial Pursuit was a fun family and friends game when it first came out, but after ump-teen editions, each focused on more obscure genres, the fun was sucked out of it. Now it seems they are trying to revitilise the game for a new generation with crap like Pop-Culture-DVD edition.

Let me state up front that this would not be my choice of game to play. I don't despise trivia games but I only played this game because it was the consensus of the group.

My group stuck the DVD in, tried it for several seconds, gave up, pulled out the rules and started reading how you are supposed to use it with the game, upon which everyone's eyes glazed over, and they promptly voted to forget the DVD and play with the cards.

Personally, I found the references totally out of my area, and I am a usually well-versed in pop-culture (well maybe more-so in 'sub-culture' but I am still pretty up on pop-culture) I didn't get half these questions, so I guess I've finally lost it in the 'cool for kids' dept.

Someone else's review on the Geek mentioned alot of 80's references in the questions, but in that case the group I played with should have got them all as they were prime in the 80's, but even they got nothing.

As usual, the board in Trivial pursuit is useless - I don't know why they don't just make you roll 2 specialty 6-sided die, one with 6 colours for the categories and one with pies/blanks/rerolls. The you read whatever category colour comes up, and if a pie shows on the die, you are playing for the pie. That about wraps up the options on the board.

I can't rant enough about how much we all did not enjoy this game. Eventually - when everyone had about 3 pies (or "wedges")- we stopped using the board correctly and just went for pies, then the win in order to make the game end sooner.

I am a proud Canadian, so I don't like to slight the Canadian game designer, but this is one of those games that really needs a German over-haul.

Avoid at all costs. You'd be better off picking up a used copy of the original game from a garage sale.

Thread: User Review

I agree with the other reviewers for this game in that it can drag, particularly at the end when trying to land in the center. That's a problem with all Trivial Pursuit editions however, this one has everything that you like and everything that you dislike about the standard game. So what does this one in particular have going for it?

* The DVD portion is entertaining, although I can't decide if I like the All-Play option or not. It keeps people interested even when it's not their turn, but it can function both to propel a runaway leader, and to keep people caught up. Early on it is possible to jump in and steal a question from others. Later in the game when you already have the green piece of the pie for instance, it can be dangerous to land on it again, as you are just giving others a shot at the pie. Instead you go in the other direction, dragging things out even further.

* The questions are good, as usual they are the highlight of the game. I am partial to the Sports & Games category which features a very high proportion of video game related questions. Some of the fads are questionable but all in all the questions are fun to read, and there is plenty of variety.

* Aesthetically the board is a bit boring compared to other editions. I love the old Genus Edition with the drawings in every space, here they are just color-coded. The "spokes" of the board are colored and have pictures on them to remind you that this color matches this category (the Music color has pictures of instruments and such, for example). This is a nice touch, there are always some categories that I forget the names of. The user pawns are cool and match well with the theme (a lava lamp is one, for instance). One downside of the pawns is that you can't always see what pie pieces your opponents have, but that is not a very big deal.

Basically it comes down to whether or not you like Trivial Pursuit in general. If you don't, there's probably not enough here to change your mind. If you do, and the theme appeals to you, you'll find a fair amount of entertainment.

Thread: Quick Comments

As with the other Trivial Pursuit games, the DVD Pop Culture edition consists of you going around the board, and answering different types of trivia to earn different colored pieces of "pie" as most people call them. The difference is, is that the questions are displayed up on the TV, with everything from the George Forman grill, to the Aflac duck.
I think I speak for most gamers on this site, when I say "Please! Not another one!" There's enough trivia questions out there to fill the Colloseum in Rome! This isn't needed. When is Trivial Pursuit going to give up, and go the way of the dinosaur?

Thread: User Review

Played this last night... and as with most versions of Trivial Pursuit I have played, I wasn't impressed.

The game play is almost exactly the same as any other TP game... only, when you land on the pie spaces you play a question on the DVD. The player who's turn it is has a chance to answer the question, then, at some point the words "ALL PLAY" will show on the screen and everyone can blurt out an answer..... whoever got it right, gets the pie.

You run around the board, get pies then try to get in the center... which of course, is the hardest thing EVER to do... so the game drags on while everyone catches up to the player that scored all the pieces in the first few turns and can't land in the "Hub." Once someone lands in the "Hub," you chose "Play to win" on the DVD and they are asked a random question from a random category. If they're right, you select "I was right" and watch as this horrid "celebration" scene. If they're wrong, you select "I was wrong" and play continues.

The DVD questions are pretty good. They give lots of hints and some of the ways the questions are presented are reminiscent of Scene It. Overall, the questions aren't that hard and they range POP culture from the 60s/70s and up... we hit lots of 80s questions last night.

In the end though... it's just Trivial Pursuit... a madly overdrawn game... and, like every other time we've attempted any version of TP, we tossed the board aside and just started reading off cards.

4/10
