Very cool article, Robert!

I can, however, provide a slightly less newsworthy answer.

The Ideology release has hit a sudden, unexpected snag and will be delayed for at least a couple of months. I will let Zev provide details as to the snag and the exact timeframe (which I'm not sure of), but it does not appear that the game will be ready for GenCon.

Very disappointing news for all (including me!) who were anticipating the new release, but the situation was simply beyond our control.

Thanks,

Andrew

-----------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC

Since posting this question, I did read the FAQ, and it answered my questions as well as a few others that I hadn't thought of yet. Looking forward to this game. I love how the Development Levels of regions can go up and down in the game based on the players' choices to add/remove influence.

The inability to declare war does not force Capitalism to remove that hostile status at the whim of the other Ideology.

Regarding WMD's, any player can create a WMD regardless of their diplomatic relationships.
Along these same lines:

If, during the ebb and flow of a given Diplomacy Phase, a nation declares war on the US, then decides it's not in his interest based on some other status change, can this nation recind the declaration of war if the US wants to keep it? I understand that the US can maintain the war status from the previous turn, but in this case, I'm basically taking about status changes to and from war during a single negotiations phase.

Thread: Re: Why no more map

If it was financially sound (based on potential sales), I think the proper form for this game would be similar to Liberte. The board would have the map of the world. When a player plays a card to a region, a "block" of the type of influence is placed with a disc of the player's color on top. Colored cylinders would indicate controlled and neutral regions. This would make the game more visual and make it easier to plan, although it would increase the cost.

In this image, discs would represent the players and blocks under them represent military/economic/cultural influence:

Note I haven't played this game before; I am just reading the rules.

The issue of component quality has always been the biggest complaint about Ideology, so we did our best to rectify this with the 2nd Edition.
4) More Influence Cards: Many players have mentioned how much they wish they had more cards in their Influence decks so that they didn't have to reshuffle them so frequently. Instead of 45-card Influence decks, we have increased them to 60-card decks. Of course, players who prefer to play with 45 can simply remove the extra cards.

Do the new influence cards have rounded corners?

Are they larger?

The shuffling concern I've always had with Ideology was that small, square cornered cards are hard to shuffle.

Thread: Re: Why no more map

Hi, Isaac.

For the 1st Edition, we created the map primarily to keep track of which Regions were controlled by whom, and also to allow players to have a visual aid regarding which Regions were adjacent to one another. Since the interaction of the game is focused on the Region cards, the map was placed off to one side (not in the center of the table).

Many players commented that they didn't actually use the map because it's much easier to focus on each other's Region Cards to determine Region control than it is to keep looking over at the map. We considered scrapping the map altogether for the 2nd Edition, but we realized that many players did find the map useful for determining Region adjacency (as opposed to having to examine the list of adjacent regions on each Region card). We therefore decided to give each player a small mini-map to use for this second purpose. This takes up less table space than the large map (and you need a decent amount of table space to play Ideology!), and allows players to have all the information they need right in front of them, as opposed to having to walk over to the map if they were sitting on the other side of the table.

Another important record-keeping change in the second edition is the new Turn Order / Diplomacy Chart. This is much cleaner and more intuitive than the previous version. It also looks a lot less like a symbol for summoning demons.

Here are some other changes to the 2nd Edition that have been outlined in other posts:

1) Component Quality: Not only have we upgraded the graphic design, we have also used thicker cardstock. The issue of component quality has always been the biggest complaint about Ideology, so we did our best to rectify this with the 2nd Edition.

2) Variant Ideologies: After many plays and session reports, players have let us know which Ideologies tended to win (and lose) the most frequently. We therefore provided variant versions of four of the Ideologies to provide a greater sense of balance.

3) Variant Rules: There are several Variant Rules which we included in the rulebook (clearly marked so that those wanting to play the classic game unchanged can still do so) in order to address important issues raised by players. The two biggest issues we addressed with these variants include a) reducing the luck involved with the early pull of Independent Regions; and b) providing incentives for players to focus on the Independent Regions during the first turn of the game (instead of always trying to pull the first turn "trifecta" of each Influence type on their Starting Region). We also provided a more interactive way of playing the 2-player game.

Thanks,

Andrew

-------------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC

Andrew;

Would you kindly comment on all the differences between 1st and 2nd editions. In particular, the 1st edition warranted a large map. If the rules haven't really changed, why is there no map in the 2nd edition? What other differences are there between versions?
Hi, guys.

When I submitted the 2nd Edition to BGG, I was not aware that there was a criteria for whether or not a new edition should be uploaded to the system. I will certainly accept the decision of the BGG Admins if they wish to combine this with the original edition.

The main reason I thought to upload the new edition was to allow people to see the new images all in one place and to be able to discuss the new rules of the game separately. For what it's worth, the new rules and new versions of the Ideologies do indeed change the game significantly. The reason we termed them "variants" was to allow people to play the game with the original rules if they chose to. However, we believe players will discover a very different game experience with the many changes that we have made to the system.

Thanks!

Andrew

----------------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC

Is it going to really improve the gameplay in a way that could tip its rating in the 7.0 or higher range?

Sonja

Seeing that Vinci is on #4 in your Top Ten, I think it's safe to say that you'd like Ideology: the games give a somewhat similar feel as they both are about large-scale conquest in some way or another without the involvement of dice. If you never found the blatant leader-bashing in Vinci a problem (which some people think breaks the game) then I'm wondering why you've never picked up the 1st ed. of Ideology!
Don't let the BGG ratings fool you......unless you are a Component Snob of course.

Thanks for your comments, PJ!

Regarding the balance of the individual Ideologies, although Islamic Fundamentalism needed a big boost, we also tweaked Fascism to be a little stronger (they can purchase Tactics a little easier). We also tweaked Communism's "Totalitarianism" to be a little weaker and Capitalism's "Attractive Culture" to be a little weaker. One of the nice things about the double-sided Player Cards is that players can pick and choose which variant Ideologies they prefer.

Also, there is indeed a separate "Variant for a Shorter Game" which eliminates the open-ended nature of the endgame. We appended this to the end of the rulebook because, unlike the other Variants, it does change one of the game's fundamental strategies. For example, there is no longer as strong a reason to stockpile Level 1 Advancements when you know the game has a set number of turns. However, the new endgame is fun and does provide players with the ability to predict when the game will end.

Thanks again!

Andrew

We listened very closely to comments from players after the the first edition released. Although there are many loyal fans of the original game, there have also been many issues that players have brought up over the years that we attempted to address in this edition.

Here is a quick summmary of what's new:

1) Component Quality: Not only have we upgraded the graphic design, we have also used thicker cardstock. The issue of component quality has always been the biggest complaint about Ideology, so we did our best to rectify this with the 2nd Edition.

2) Map: Many players have told us that the map took up unnecessary table space. We therefore did not include a large map with the 2nd edition, but we attached a mini-map to everyone's Player Cards for those players who found the map helpful in quickly locating adjacent Regions.

3) Variant Ideologies: After many plays and session reports, players have let us know which Ideologies tended to win (and lose) the most frequently. We therefore provided variant versions of four of the Ideologies to provide a greater sense of balance.

4) Variant Rules: There are several Variant Rules which we included in the rulebook (clearly marked so that those wanting to play the classic game unchanged can still do so) in order to address important issues raised by players.

5) More Influence Cards: Many players have mentioned how much they wish they had more cards in their Influence decks so that they didn't have to reshuffle them so frequently. Instead of 45-card Influence decks, we have increased them to 60-card decks. Of course, players who prefer to play with 45 can simply remove the extra cards.

We hope fans of the original game will enjoy the changes we made to the 2nd Edition (inspired by their comments! ), but also that new players will give Ideology a try too!

Thanks,

Andrew

-------------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC

It's good to hear that the new edition is finally under way; this game deserves a lot more exposure than it has had up to now. It is also, I think, highly appreciated that you/the publisher have taken people's suggestions into account for the 2nd ed. in order to improve things, thumbs up to that.

As for the changes with respect to the original edition you've listed:

1) I personally had only minor quibbles with the component quality of the 1st ed (the sharp corners of the cardstock), but understand where people where coming from. I just happen to like "plain" graphics somehow (depicting the coldness of politics, perhaps?). It hopefully gives peeps a reason to give the game a chance.

2) This is a great idea, such a good solution to the problem that you'd almost say - why didn't anyone think of that one earlier on? People generally more or less know what country lies where, but the exact "adjacentness" made players in my group referring to the map back and forth.

3) Other than the Muslims being a bit too weak, my group never had problems with certain Ideologies winning more often than others (the Totalitarianism of the Communists was reeled in by extra player attention to attempts of the communist player), but some extra options will make the game more interesting one should say.

4) The issues that you list here, while they existed, where never much of a problem with my group, and, as I have previously explained in some threads in the 1st ed. forum, my major gripe was the stagnant endgame. The extra influence cards might help a little to fix this, but I'm not fully sure based on what you've written alone. Has anything else been added in the rules as per the Game End conditions?

5) As said, that might help a little.

All in all, I'll be looking forward to the complete new ruleset and will check the 2nd Ed. out as soon as it hits the shelves; and will also be plugging the release to my gaming buddies.

Andrew,

As always, top notch job, and thanks for your participation in the forums here.

I am glad to hear the design, and component quality were upgraded for the second edition. I think that might be why I haven't really had the urge to pull this one out yet. I'm a sucker for bits

LA

Thread: Re: O shiny!

Sonja wrote:
The premise of this board game has always interested me, because I love the big-picture real-life-sim feel of things, but the lowish average rating of the 1st edition (6.51) had always turned me off from giving it a try.

What is being changed in this 2nd edition? Is it going to really improve the gameplay in a way that could tip its rating in the 7.0 or higher range?

Sonja

I've always been a bit flummoxed by the comparatively low ratings on this quite good game. It was a real surprise hit in my groups a couple years ago, and met with praise from a wide variety of different types of gamers.

But more to the point. You ask about whether the changes in gameplay will make it better. But you look at all the comments in the negative ratings and see how many of them cite the poor component and graphics quality. I'll bet a dollar the ratings get a real boost in 2e based on that alone since people had such issues with production values in the first.

My set has hit the table dozens of times, and is holding up fine, but I'd buy it again in a heartbeat if they didn't change a word of the rules.

Hi, Willen.

I am not sure if the new Influence deck will be available separately, but you may eventually be able to download the new Rulebook. For inquiries regarding buying separate components, you may want to contact the publisher at zman@zmangames.com

Thanks,

Andrew

-----------------------

Andrew Parks
Quixotic Games LLC
