Just got the game, and we've played it twice. I like it a LOT.

I'll post a review after a few more games - seems a shame that more people don't know about this game (the gaming store that ordered it for me had never heard of it either).

Game on!

EDIT: BTW, no missing cards!!! :)
Thread: Re: Variant: Character Starting Kits for the Base Game

Actually, I ended up winning with the Mercenary. Kent was the first player in the final battle and had only one artifact; he chose to attack me and unfortunately lost (I had Concentration and therefore got to take the best of my combat rolls, and I was +3 up on him even before the roll with the addition of Berserk Rage).

As the game played out, all but one of my seven skills were from the Fortress, and I focused almost entirely upon Strength. I lucked out later in the game by stumbling upon the Hermit at the top of the Glass Mountain, so my Willpower rocketed to a very comfortable level.

I also stumbled through most of the game with only the Dagger and War Axe, and the benefits of a couple potions (I sold the Flaming Staff as it carried the Mummy's Curse ;) ). It seems you don't necessarily need to be loaded up with gear to win...

Thread: Re: Z-Man Games Prophecy: A Quality RPG
I agree. That's definitely how we play it, with X number of artifacts determining the winner. Otherwise, the final battle between champions is tedious and anti-climatic.

Although I admit that the first to X number of artifacts is likewise anti-climatic. If there's one thing I could change about the game, it would be the ending... I just have no idea what that should be!

Thread: Re: Z-Man Games Prophecy: A Quality RPG

It seems to me that in a two-player game, the stock of five artifact cards lends itself well to playing 'first-to-three'. Whoever gets that third artifact automatically wins with no need for a final battle.

PS don't get hung-up about the breats and female pronouns; hopefully the world will be a little better balanced when your daughter is helping to run it! (our world, that is, not Prophecy world).

EDIT: Boy, is my face red:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/112229

My idea of three artifacts is better though. Plus, my post mentioned boobs.

Thread: At least it wasn't a 7-hour game...

Thanks for the report, and I'm glad the variant was at least somewhat helpful. ;) Did the Illusionist end up winning, or did luck eventually balance things out? It sounds like a pretty even game if the artifact split was 2-2-1 before the final battle.

Thread: Re: Variant: Character Starting Kits for the Base Game

Well, my friends and I tried out a three-player round this weekend (my copy of the game) using these variant rules, with none of us having played before. Perhaps the last part of that sentence is a telling indication, as it took us almost 6 hours to finish and we ended up forcing a final battle once all five artifacts were acquired (2-2-1 split). However, we also concluded that we all probably played a little too conservatively and had assumed we needed to escalate in power a lot more than was necessary before assaulting the Astral Planes, naturally coupled with the learning curve of the first attempt.

I can't imagine how much longer it would have taken, though, if we started according to the standard rules as written! And how it's possible to get through a four-player round in 2 hours with two new players is completely beyond me (unless the newbies were being helped a lot and the experienced players really knew the game).

That said, my friends and I are (still) long-time D&D players and we really liked the flavor of the starting kits; otherwise, the only thing really distinguishing the characters from one another are their initial stats spreads and starting guilds.

• I myself played the Mercenary and thus didn't have any choices to make on my kit. I thought the Dagger was cool at first until I realized it became damaged every time I wanted to use it (thus I looked for a better weapon soon after), and the Dueling skill was mildly handy during the game (yet very nice to have for the final battle).

• Keith (as the Illusionist) chose the Ivory Wand and Wharf Rat, and among the three of of us, we felt he had the best initial advantage, having a bonus to Willpower combat as well as free use of boat travel (which he used to great effectiveness). That grouping seemed far more advantageous than taking Disguise alone (which he also happened to acquire right away as his next skill, anyway, for a really nice combination).

• Kent (As the Mystic) chose Staff Skill to accompany the assigned Wooden Shield. Of course, the former wasn't of much use until he could get his hands on a staff weapon, and considering the latter only has a 1/3 chance of effectiveness on defense (even though it's better than nothing), to us his starting kit seemed the weakest of all.

Despite the starting item and skill, though, it still all depends upon how the game plays out and what opportunities you are able to exploit. We'd like to give it another shot sometime (they do like it better than Talisman, BTW) and be able to comment on the other characters, once we convince ourselves things should go a lot quicker second time around...

Thanks for your hard work! :)
