Wow, this is great news. I've always been interested in Axiom just for the sheer mind-bendingly unique look (and apparently gameplay), but I figured it was too hard to find to be worth hunting for. If people like the new edition, I'll definitely be placing an order...hopefully he can get an American distributor so I won't have to pay for international shipping!

I got a bounce message from axiom@... so rummaged around on the site, and found a different email address. I got this reply:

The tool for Magnetic Axiom was started in September, I did hope to
have some product before the end of the year.
The end of this month is my new date from the engineers, so I expect
some Axiom copies to be available in February.

I will email you when I have the new magnetic Axiom ready for sale.
And also the Axiom website will be updated.

Thanks for the info' about the axiom email, it seemed to work when I
tried it a few moments ago

Michael also said that he normally replies to all his email messages, so if you haven't had a reply, you may want to try again.

Hi all

I recently contacted Michael Seal (the guy who designed Axiom or Axiom 3000, depending on how you know it) to find out whether there were any spare copies to buy off him as I know this is quite rare & certain gamers want one. See his reply:-

"I only have a few of the original Axiom games left now and I have decided to keep them for the time being.

I may decide to sell the last of the original ones after the new Axiom
(Axiom 3000) is launched This new magnetic version of Axiom will be out later this year, see attached picture..."

Unfortunately the picture didn't display so I can't put this up yet. Hopefully he will write back again soon! So as soon as I know any more info and/or have a picture I'll put this up.

But sounds like good news for those of us who have wanted one - a magnetic version sounds a great idea.

Thanks

Matt...

Thread: Get Your Mind in a Knot! An Axiom Review

Bottomline: If you like abstracts and love games that go into the third dimension, Axiom is for you! This is an outstanding game.

This review will cover the Axiom 3000 rules played with the original Axiom.

The Bits

The "board" is a set of twelve cubes. The cubes either have one or two pyramids sticking up and pyramidal holes into them on the remaining sides. Each player has two "sceptres" that fit into the holes as well (as the cube pyramids themselves). These cubes and sceptres are split evenly into black and white. I love the bits - a really cool modern shape. I am always a little cautious about the sceptres as tehre is a little square pice at the bottom that fits into the base of the pyramid and I worry a little about breaking it off.

Set-UpYou set up with six cubes on eaach side in two rows of three; there are pyramids poking out of the ends for each color diagonally across. The sceptres go int the two outer rows opposing one another. Looking down from the top, the "board" looks like this.

The Objective

To land on your opponent's cube side; there can never be two of any color occupying a cube.

The Game Play

On your turn, you can either move your sceptre or move a cube. Here's how movement of each works:

Moving a Sceptre: on the same flat face of the you can move laterally or diagonally. Lateral movement can change faces and is only blocked by an opponent's sceptre OR a pyramid on that same cube side you would have to cross. (Meaning if it "pokes" into the space, you just squeeze through...)

Moving a Cube: you may move a cube of your color if it is free (i.e. there are no sceptres or cubes on it).

Removing a Cube: if your piece leaves an opponent's cube that is free, it is removed from the game.

Inceidentally, cube movement and removal can wind up creating two entirely separate boards of play. There is an advantage if you can strand an opponent's piece on one part and have both of your pieces facing one opponent piece.

Conclusion

The rules are deceptively simple. Because it is played in 3-D and on different sides of the cube, it can take awhile to get your head around it. It's a real brainburner game and when you lose you always feel you should have seen it coming.

I bought a lazy susan to play this on, so you could see the game from different angles. It is a perfect way to play this game.

I feel this is an outstanding abstract with extremely interesting game play and a lot of replayability.

Thread: Session Report

Jim and I played this 3 times as part of a game night. We used it as a warm-up.

The first play had me teaching Jim the rules, he caught on quick and when I did sort of a cutsey move that I didn't pay enough attention to - he came along and beat me by travel;ing all the way around from teh opposite side and traveling along the base pieces.

Thh second game was a quick lesson for him - 3 moves into the game he left himself available.

The third game had me taking away one of his blocks at the minute he thought he was getting the upper hand. Then I came cruising around the side on the base (like he did in the first game) to win it.

We were playing the original Axiom, but with the revised 3000 rules that are provided. I just like the look of the original game more.

Paul: 2
Jim: 1
Thread: General Comment

"From the Island of Misfit Games"

Hey, wow. We have a good game show up on the island. Although, Axiom fits my definition of good, it is certainly pretty honking weird.

What we've got is a 2 player abstract 3D strategy game. The game consists of 12 cubes in black and white, along with 4 pawns. The object is to move your pawn onto the same cube as an opponent's pawn.

The possible moves during a turn are, move a pawn, or move a cube. The pawns fit onto the edge of cubes, so they can be placed on the sides of this 3D board. And they move like a rook, being able to wrap around the edges of the cubes.

You can also move cubes to change the board. The cubes have pyramids on some sides which block movement.

This is an absolutely frightening game to play. There are so many possible moves, and the ability to move cubes, and having to think in 3D space really hurts your brain. But the game is solid, and the pieces are modern and cool. Plus the entire package comes on a board that rotates easily. (You will need to use this feature.)
Got a mailing from the designer with the updated rules.

The rules changes (from Axiom, and retroactive to Axiom) *appear* to be:

You may not have two of your own scepters on the cube. You will lose if your only move option is to move into such a position.

When moving a cube, there are two new requirements. The cube must be moved so that it shares at least one entire face with another cube, and it must interlock with a cube.

In Axiom, a cube merely had to share a single edge.
